Stone Canyonyou will just need to plan ahead in the meantime. Most mornings, you can expect the doors to be unlocked before 9 AM (this task is being handled by a volunteer). Thank you for your patience. The Pool Committee, Board, and Management Company are working to get card readers installed on the restroom doors, so only residents may have access to the restrooms during pool hours. Stipulations of this solution require that the locks function with the current keycard system used to enter the pool area, and that the system permit egress without a keycard. Hey, we don’t want to trap someone in there, right? Well, if they’ve been trashing the place… Anyway, we hope to have this solution in place by the time you read this. The residents of Stone Canyon have a signifi cant investment in the Pool Amenity Center, and the Owner’s Association Board is dedicated to protecting that

investment; we want the community to have a neighborhood pool of which we can be proud. When this property is vandalized or misused, it is an attack on all of us, and we all share the expense of repair and the trauma of being violated by the trespassers. The Board is working with the Sherriff’s offi ce and security consultants to prevent further occurrences of trespassing and/or vandalism at the Amenity Center. The pool hours are clearly posted at the Amenity Center, as is the warning that trespassers will be prosecuted. Please be reminded that the pool closes at 10 PM and is closed all day on Wednesday. Persons found within the premises between 10 PM and 6 AM, or at anytime on Wednesday without authorization from the Stone Canyon O.A. Board will be prosecuted for trespassing. Additional charges (e.g. criminal mischief, vandalism, et cetera) may be added following further investigation of the site. Please don’t let it be you or someone you know.

Enjoy the NewFlower Beds

By Dick Wilgoren, Landscape Chair The Landscape Committee worked with our new landscaper; My Garden Matters, to expand and add new fl owers and shrubs in the median beds along Brightwater across from the pool entrance, from Whitewater, from Fern Bluff, from Sea Ash and from Full Moon. During the month of May, the Board has authorized the completion of median beds from Glen Canyon to Great Oaks. These beds are at Brightwater and Glen Canyon, Sunburst, Lofty Lane, and at Great Oaks. Thanks to our Board and Bob and Virginia Tagtow, you can now enjoy this beauty.Enjoy the New BedsBy Dick Wilgoren

There is a lot of additional activity throughout our neighborhoods during this time of year—prospective homebuyers are checking us out. While a home for sale is their main focus, people also take into account the appearance and upkeep of that home’s surrounding properties. Please be mindful of the positive or negative impact your actions have on your neighbors, with particular regard to:* Yard...A welcome result of our recent rainfall: you can almost hear the grass growing and trees fi lling out—that’s good news! However, keeping everything looking sharp requires some extra attention to mowing and trimming. Doesn’t take that long and “satisfaction” payback for everyone is terrifi c. * Fire Ants…The only way to deal with these is to aggressively attack anthills while they’re small. Home Depot, Lowes and most Nurseries offer various options, including some which require spreading over your lawn only once a season.* Pets... “Deposits” left in yards, playgrounds, common areas, and along sidewalks affect everyone. Whenever your pet leaves your property, Stone Canyon’s DCCRs require that it be on a leash. If Fido or Fluffy “poops,” please remember to “scoop.”* ACC…The Architectural Control Committee is always seeking volunteers. We are in the process of updating the ACC Guidelines and welcome your input. No matter how much or how little time you can spare, if you would like to have a positive impact on our community,

this is a perfect opportunity to do so. Please contact Justin Pape, HOA President and ACC Chair, at [email protected] . Remember that all Requests for ACC approval should be submitted to Bob Nardo, our property manager (contact info below). Forms can be obtained from our website (www.stonecanyonoa.org), as well as from Bob. Please be sure to provide all required info, noted on the form, with your request, including your property plat and detailed plans for your proposed project. Incomplete documentation delays the approval process. If you have any questions about whether or not your project requires approval, please contact Bob. It’s important that you not begin any project until you have your ACC approval in hand. Any project completed without the committee’s approval may require removal--sometimes costly--if the improvement is not in compliance with Stone Canyon’s deed restrictions. If you have any concerns about deed restriction violation(s) by another resident which can’t be resolved through neighborly interaction, please contact Bob for his assistance. All reports remain confi dential and your name will not be released to any other resident.

Hi Stone Canyon, Stone Canyon residents reported one home burglary, one attempted burglary, one theft, two narcotic possessions, a few criminal mischief complaints and many suspicious person calls in April. This is the 2nd burglary in Stone Canyon in the past few months and criminal activity continues to grow in our once placid neighborhood. This is a cause of concern to all our families and community. We need to be vigilant to protect our families and property. It is important for each of us to take an active role in watching out for our neighbors and property to help stem this troubling trend. If you see any suspicious activity, car, persons, etc., give our local sheriff’s offi ce a call. Community safety is OUR responsibility and we must all pitch in to keep a look out in our neighborhoods. A neighborhood that is vigilant about keeping out crime is a neighborhood that criminals will avoid! Stone Canyon has been a very safe and excellent place to live, please help keep it a great place. If you see someone causing a problem, please report it ASAP to our local Sheriff’s offi ce at 512-943-1300 or 911. As always, if anyone has any concerns about the safety of Stone Canyon, please do not hesitate to contact me at [email protected],Vincent Haile

One of the families that we adopted for Christmas could use a bit of help again. The family is made up of the grandparents who are raising two wonderful grandchildren. One of the children is in the special needs class at Fern Bluff Elementary school. The grandparents are on a fi xed income and would be most appreciative of anything that we might be able to offer. If you would like to make a cash or gift card donation, please contact me before the end of June. I will get this to the family and keep you posted on their situation. Stone CanyonIt Will Cost You

By Justin Pape Due to the high number of violators, our community has been forced to take more aggressive action on deed restriction violations. As of May 1st, all new violations are now subject to the new fee structure in place within Stone Canyon. As advertised in the previous 4 newsletters, if you do not remedy any violations you are notifi ed about within the allotted time of the notifi cation, you will be charged for the processing fees associated with ACC processing (currently $50). In addition to this fee structure, the Stone Canyon board of directors is also investigating option around instituting a fi ne schedule and policy if the situation does not improve. This has not been approved and is still in the proposal/design stage. We hope the combination of more aggressive efforts will greatly improve several issues in our community and help our property values. We are a deed restricted community and as such, we are all bound to abide by the deed restrictions we agreed to when we purchased our homes. Please help us make our community a better place to live. If you feel strongly about our community and want to get involved in the ACC, please contact Justin Pape ([email protected]).

Austin Recognized asOne of Top 25 Cities in AmericaCity Ranked as 2nd Most Popular Overall in 2004

AUSTIN, TX - Travel + Leisure magazine and CNN Headline News have released the 2007 survey of “America’s Favorite Cities.” After ranking second as the overall favorite city in the 2004 poll, Austin again appears among the country’s most popular destinations. Dallas/Fort Worth and San Antonio also make the list, as do Honolulu, New York, San Francisco, San Diego, Nashville and Santa Fe. Travelers are asked to vote for their favorites at both www.cnn.com/travel and www.travelandleisure.com/afc. Voting continues through July 15. During this time, Travel + Leisure editors profi le the cities on CNN Headline News’ morning show “Robin & Company.” Austin’s profi le is on the schedule for June 8, along with Portland and Seattle. Viewers can also submit their own pictures and video of Austin through CNN.com’s I-Report. Survey results will be announced on CNN Headline News and via the websites on Oct. 10, as well as in the November issue of Travel + Leisure. The surveys rate the cities on such variables as cleanliness (Austin scored 7th in the ’04 poll), attractiveness, weather, peace and quiet, shopping (at #25 Austin placed at the bottom in the last poll), romance, sexiness, outdoor activities and eating out (again, Austin previously came in last). Despite two last-place fi nishes, however, Austin scored a total of 85 points to trail only behind Honolulu with 88 points as “America’s Favorite City.” San Antonio came in fourth, and the last-place fi nisher in ’04 was Washington, DC. Houston, which made the list at #21, is not included in this year’s survey.

Pilates is one of the fastest growing fi tness activities. It is an exercise regiment that stresses strengthening the core muscles which keeps the body posture well balanced and is essential to providing support for the spine to prevent back pain. People are discovering Pilates exercise is not only benefi cial in every day activities but also improves performance in various sports such as Golf. Pilates consists of exercises initiating from the muscles of the abdomen, lower back, hips and buttocks. It is a great core workout and a perfect way for golfers to strengthen, stretch and gain more fl exibility in their back and abdominal muscles. According to a report stated in “USA Today” many professional golfers have found that the combination of strengthening and fl exibility that Pilates offers has helped them to reduce injury and improve their Golf game. Per this report, “PGA Tour Pro Rocco Mediate found that using Pilates helped him improve his game and extend his career. After major back surgery in 1994 Mediates says he wasn’t the same. He couldn’t bend over for long periods of time to practice putting, and his back always went out after lengthy plane trips.” A customized Pilates routine got him back to enjoying competitive golf. He stated “After a week I was turned around”. “After two weeks I felt like I never felt before”. Pilates never compromises your back,

Pilates and the Performance Benefi ts for GolfBy Jackie Mohr

and increased more motion in his shoulders, midsection and legs. For the golfer, Pilates helps to balance the body against the forces of the golf swing. It helps create manageable torque in the spine because you are more comfortable swinging from your core and not from your limbs. Pilates allows for strengthening of muscles without adding muscle mass and that encourages better fl exibility and balance. In golf, the power in the swing is the result of the correct weight transfer from club take away to follow through. Core strength with fl exibility allows for better weight transfer as the hips and shoulders torque then release in a balanced rhythm and tempo. The result is more ball fl ight distance and accuracy. Without core strength and fl exibility compensations during the golf swing with hands and arms doom the ball fi ght to poor results. Yoga and Pilates naturally build long lean muscles that are ideal for generating the kind of power needed for long and accurate drives. As Director of Fitness at River Place Country Club I have seen a growth in the number of people interested in Pilates classes and it benefi ts. As a result River Place Country Club now offers a wide range of specialty Pilates classes for its members including Pilates on the Ball and Pilates for Golfers. Take a Pilates class and see if it makes a difference in your life and in your game. The benefi ts are noticeable with just one class!

Organized sports offer kids a great opportunity to grow in many ways. Through any number of sports, ranging from soccer to fencing, kids get to learn and master skills, work with their peers and other adults, and challenge themselves in a safe environment. They learn the value of practice and challenge of competition. And on top of all that, sports provide natural and fun opportunities for kids to get exercise on a regular basis. But before you sign your child up for sports, there are things you may want to consider – including your child’s personality and developmental level - so that being involved in sports turns out to be a positive experience for your entire family. When Should I Sign my Child up for Sports? As you’re thinking of signing your child up for sports, consider how emotionally and physically ready your child is to participate. Signing up too early can end up being frustrating for both of you, and may end up turning your child off from sports for good. Although there are sports programs designed for preschoolers, it’s not until about age 6 or 7 that most kids have the physical skills to do the sports, and the attention span to listen to directions and grasp the rules of the game. While preschoolers can throw and run, it usually takes some time before they can coordinate the two skills. And it usually isn’t until kindergarten or the fi rst grade, that kids grasp concepts like “taking turns,” which are crucial to doing many activities. That doesn’t mean kids can’t participate in sports when they’re younger. For toddlers and kindergartners, sports can be fun, but they should be less about competition, and more about having fun opportunities to be active. So even if your child inadvertently scores a goal for the other team, or spends the entire game chasing butterfl ies, as long as he or she is enjoying it, that’s okay. If you decide to sign your 5-year-old up for a team, be sure to choose a league that emphasizes fun and basic skills. If your child shows an interest in a sport, it’s a good idea to let him or her do it. You may be worried that your child will get hurt, particularly in a contact sport like football. But as long as the coach requires players to use the correct safety gear, your child’s doctor

Signing Your Kids Up for Sportsby KidsHealth.org

says it’s okay, and your child is matched up with other kids of the same size and ability, go ahead. And if the sport doesn’t turn out to be a good fi t for your child, he or she will learn that through the experience.Choosing the Right Sport When choosing a sport, it’s important to consider your child’s unique temperament. Some kids are naturally inclined toward team sports, while others may feel more comfortable in activities where the focus is on individual efforts. That’s okay. There are plenty of options, from soccer and baseball for team-oriented kids to tennis, fencing, karate, dancing, and swimming for kids who’d rather go solo. Don’t be surprised if it takes a few tries – or a few seasons – to fi nd the sport that’s a good fi t for your child. It often takes time for kids to fi gure out what kinds of activities they enjoy. Some kids may just not be interested in team sports, but they can still maintain an excellent level of fi tness by engaging in other activities that don’t emphasize competition. No matter what they choose, kids should be physically active for at least 60 minutes a day.Family Factors Before you sign up for a season of sports, it’s important to think about how practices and games are going to affect the day-to-day life of your child and the rest of the family. If your child does this sport, how will it affect how much time your child has for things like homework, other activities, relaxation, and time with friends and family? You may want to get the schedule of practices and games, and look at a calendar to map out a typical week with your child. Keep in mind that it’s important for kids to have time to rest, think creatively, and play freely when they’re not engaged in something else. This rest can help give them the energy they need for their activities. Also, think about how the sport is going to affect the rest of the family’s plans. Many teams only practice and play games during the weekend. So if your family likes weekend getaways, that kind of sport might be a problem. If you have more than one child who is playing sports, think about how you’re going to coordinate transportation to practices

Stone Canyonand games. Consider, too, how involved you want to be in the sport, and how involved your child wants you to be. Organized sports leagues are usually looking for parents to volunteer with everything from coaching to team snacks and transportation. Being involved with your child’s sports team – either as a coach or in another role – can be a great way to spend time with your kids and show them you are interested in what they are doing. When Your Child Wants to Quit However your child feels when you sign up for a season of sports, there may come a time during the season when he or she wants to quit. If your child comes to you with this plea, it’s a good idea to fi rst get to the reason behind it. It may have to do with something small and fi xable, like a bad-fi tting uniform, or it may be a bigger issue, like how comfortable your child feels with the coach or the kids on the team. It could also be that your child just doesn’t enjoy the sport. Is it OK to let your child quit? If your child is on a team that depends on your child’s participation, you may want to explain that to your child, and explain the importance of sticking it out for the season. If that’s not the case, then think about what you want your child to get out of the experience, and how quitting would affect that. If your child is overscheduled or unhappy, quitting may be the right thing to do. Keep in mind, however, that it is still important for your

child to be physically active every day, even if no longer playing an organized sport. Before You Sign Up Before beginning any sports or fi tness program, your child should have a physical examination. Children with certain medical conditions, vision or hearing problems, or other disorders may have diffi culty participating in certain activities. Rarely, a doctor may fi nd an undiagnosed condition that may affect your child’s participation. Although you should share your interests with your child, it’s never a good idea to force your child into an activity just because you once excelled in it. And once your child chooses a sport, be sure to head out to the fi eld, gym, or pool to cheer him or her on. These are general guidelines to keep in mind. Each child matures at a different pace, and develops different skills at different times, so the best thing you can do is consider your child’s unique emotional and physical maturity level before you commit to a season of sports. There’s no point in forcing a sport on a child of any age if he or she isn’t having fun. Reviewed by: Mary L. Gavin, MD Date reviewed: November 2006

• Physical activity need not be strenuous to achieve health benefi ts.• Men and women of all ages benefi t from a moderate amount of

daily physical activity. The same moderate amount of activity can be obtained in longer sessions of moderately intense activities (such as 30 minutes of brisk walking) as in shorter sessions of more strenuous activities (such as 15–20 minutes of jogging).

• Additional health benefi ts can be gained through greater amounts of physical activity. Adults who maintain a regular routine of physical activity that is of longer duration or of greater intensity are likely to derive greater benefi t. However, because risk of injury also increases with greater amounts of activity, care should be taken to avoid excessive amounts.

• Previously sedentary people who begin physical activity programs should start with short sessions (5–10 minutes) of physical activity and gradually build up to the desired level of activity.

• Adults with chronic health problems, such as heart disease, diabetes, or obesity, or who are at high risk for these conditions should fi rst consult a physician before beginning a new program of physical activity. Men over age 40 and women over age 50 who plan to begin a new program of vigorous activity should consult a physician to be sure they do not have heart disease or other health problems.

Physical Activity and HealthSubmitted By Alicia Harrison

Facts• More than 60 percent of U.S. adults do not engage in the

recommended amount of activity.• Approximately 25 percent of U.S. adults are not active at all.• Physical inactivity is more common among: – Women than men. – African American and Hispanic adults than whites. – Older than younger adults. – Less affl uent than more affl uent people.• Social support from family and friends has been consistently and

positively related to regular physical activity.Benefi ts of Being Physically Active• Reduces the risk of dying from coronary heart disease and of

developing high blood pressure, colon cancer, and diabetes.• Can help reduce blood pressure in some people with

hypertension.• Helps maintain healthy bones, muscles, and joints.• Reduces symptoms of anxiety and depression and fosters

improvements in mood and feelings of well-being.• Helps control weight, develop lean muscle, and reduce body fat.
