Main AttractionsWhat main films will play at the County? This section lists the Main Attractions that we intend to play in the coming weeks. Additional unlisted films will also become available. This list is only an educated guess, though, since film release plans often change. When will these main films play? Scheduling our Main Attractions is week-to-week. On Monday, we decide what main films will play starting that Friday. On Tuesday and Wednesday, we set the showtimes for the upcoming week and then update our website and telephone hotline. We also send out a weekly email (which you can receive by signing up at our website). Sometimes, we book a main film a few weeks in advance, which we post on our website’s “Coming Attractions” section. For our latest Main Attractions plans, visit: CountyTheater.org (Or call our hotline at 215 345 6789.)

Kon-Tiki Norway - Joachim Ronning & Espen Sandberg – 1 hr 59 min – w/subtitlesKON-TIKI presents a sweeping adventure about a Norwegian scientist’s voyage across the Pacific on a handmade balsa wood raft to prove that early settlers from South America populated Polynesia. It features stunning cinematography in this gorgeously mounted feature — the most expensive in Norwegian history. This is filmmaking of great ambition and ability that beautifully shows the epic spectacle of the voyage.

EmperorUSA - Peter Webber – 1 hr 38 minWhen General MacArthur became the de facto ruler of Japan after WWII, he assigned an expert in Japanese culture to investigate the looming question: should the Emperor be punished or saved? In this movie, the man assigned with that task is caught between political intrigue and his own impassioned search for the mysterious school teacher who first drew him to Japan. A grand historical drama with Tommy Lee Jones and Matthew Fox.

StokerUSA - Chan-Wook Park – 1 hr 38 min STOKER is a splendid mixture of Hitchcock, American Gothic, fairy tale, and mad suspense-thriller. Led by a brilliant Mia Wasikowska as an introverted teenager whose personal awakening arrives with the unraveling of a macabre family mystery, this exquisitely designed movie both delights and bewilders. Director Chan-Wook Park brings operatic finesse to this tightly-wound, impossible to get out of your head movie. Also with Nicole Kidman and Matthew Goode.

Limited Engagements We try to play each of our Main Attractions films for a full multi-week run. Sometimes, however, we are unable to play a film in a timely or complete way, and it becomes a question of either squeezing it in or not playing it at all. We then often schedule that film for a couple of mid-week screenings, called Limited Engagements. Make sure that you sign up for our weekly email blast, so that you don’t miss these short, last-chance screenings.

Blancanieves Spain – Pablo Berger – 1 hr 44 min silent with music BLANCANIEVES is a 2012 silent film, and is as artistically successful as the acclaimed The Artist. The title is Spanish for “Snow White” and, yes, it’s a variation on the Grimms’ fairy tale. Made in Spain, it’s shot in black and white and has glorious music. The plot twist: Snow White is the daughter of a famous bullfighter, destined to follow in his footsteps. This is a special, magical film that surprises and delights. Highly recommended!

Starbuck Canada – Ken Scott – 1 hr 49 min w/subtitles A fortysomething slacker’s life is turned upside down when he learns that his many sperm donations have resulted in more than 500 children - 100 of whom are now suing to meet their father. But he’s desperate to keep his identity a secret. A wonderfully sweet and poignant comedy that goes in unexpected directions.

The SapphiresAustralia - Wayne Blair – 1 hr 39 minInspired by a true story, THE SAPPHIRES follows four vivacious and talented Australian Aboriginal girls from a remote country outpost, who form a girl group and travel to Vietnam to entertain the US troops in 1968. Soul music’s powers are fully at work in this appealing musical comedy. It’s been compared to The Commitments with its broad humor and sensational music.

On the RoadUSA/Brazil – Walter Salles – 2 hr 4 min The first big-screen adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s iconic novel, which defined The Beat Generation. ON THE ROAD is a trip through the mental and physical landscape of postwar America, accompanied by a jazzy soundtrack and elegant hand-held camerawork. Starring Sam Riley, Garrett Hedlund, and Kristen Stewart.

The Place Beyond the Pines USA - Derek Cianfrance – 2 hr 20 minTHE PLACE BEYOND THE PINES is an epic crime saga about a thief who runs up against an ambitious rookie cop and the resulting consequences that reverberate through their families. This sweeping drama, from the director of Blue Valentine, powerfully explores the lives of men and particularly the bond of fathers and sons. With a spectacular cast, including Ryan Gosling, Bradley Cooper, Ray Liotta and Rose Byrne.

The movie industry has experienced a seismic shift - the most significant since the conversion to sound. For over 100 years, film was projected exclusively on film stock. No longer. Movies are now presented digitally. Our new digital equipment not only provides crisp, beautiful picture and audio, but allows us to show you previously unavailable programs. We can present new restorations of classics as well as movies shot in 3D. Join us this Spring as we explore this exciting new world with the special series THIS IS DIGITAL CINEMA.

We have a separate THIS IS DIGITAL CINEMA booklet available, which includes more details about the films, as well as essays, which provide more insight into our new digital world.

Special Programming Spring 2013 In addition to our first-run Main Attractions, we present special programming throughout the year. Our special programs are generally one-time events and include a diverse collection of independent and classic films, film lectures, works from local filmmakers, and stage productions from Europe’s top performing arts venues.

This spring, we are excited to highlight our new projection equipment with a series entitled THIS IS DIGITAL CINEMA. We are also thrilled to re-launch our Sunday ballet with a new collaboration bringing you the top productions from London’s ROYAL BALLET. And our HOLLYWOOD SUMMER NIGHTS series is just around the corner.
