Pastoral Perspective by Fr. Ben Hawley, SJ
Why do you come to St. Mary? I ask this ques"on in homilies not because
I doubt your mo"ves, but because it is worth reflec"on. St. Paul says, "I
plant, Apollos waters, and God gives the growth." What is growth? It is
discovering who we are, who God is, and what our lives are about. We
discover that we are created by love. And we are so loved by God that
God is the author of our lives and des"ny. This encounter transforms.
Why do young people come to St. Mary?
They seek authen"c encounters with God, others, and themselves. They
come from a world that demands near-perfect performance, a complete
plan for social, family and professional life, and resolved life ques"ons.
This success-failure model sets una&ainable expecta"ons, making our
students feel frustrated and unhappy.
They come mo"vated by an intui"on that God and Catholic community
can provide relief from these demands and provide faith-based direc"on
in life. What they experience at St. Mary is nothing short of an
intellectual and spiritual transforma"on.
When they discover who they are and who God is, their horizons expand.
They grow in a desire to share this transforma"on with those on
campus. And they grow in a desire to serve people, especially those in
need. They discover the joy of serving and in an unexpected way they
discover themselves in a new way as they serve. And they find joy and
peace.
Yet, we have reached a pivotal moment at our parish. We cannot
con"nue to welcome young people into the parish nor sustain their
transforma"on without your financial support.
The number of students a&ending Thursday night Ig.nite evenings of
mass and dinner con"nues to grow. Undergrads have created a new
academic year-round Small Church Community model, called Restore,
that meets a growing need for increased faith sharing. The fall retreat for
undergrads has set a new standard for the intensity of religious
experience our students crave.
For the first "me in five years, the amount you generously give during
the Sunday offertory has declined, even though the number of families
contribu"ng has increased. At the same "me, an increase in program
costs created a 5% deficit that we overcame last year through tapping
into reserves, which we do according to a strict policy overseen by our
Finance Council. This 5% deficit equates to roughly $45,000, or the salary
for one full-"me campus minister.
We need to close this gap. I am therefore asking you to increase your
Sunday giving by 5%, or in other words $1 for every $20 you now give. I
ask you to take some "me to see how you might be able to increase your
giving in a way that remains meaningful to you.
I am deeply apprecia"ve of your con"nued support for this community
and for all you do for me, my Jesuit brothers, and for our young people.

Prof. Peter Bodary –
Everyday Catholic – speaking about how he lives out his
Catholic faith in everyday life. He is a kinesiology prof, so how does he live
out his Catholic faith in a secular ins"tu"on?)
Our undergraduate-led ministry draws its inspira"on from Igna"us with a
dual purpose: to welcome students into the parish, bringing them together
as an undergraduate community through the sharing of a meal, and
allowing them to engage with faith as it interacts in their everyday lives as
college students.
We meet every Thursday of the academic year (except holidays).

LGBT Outreach Ministry is a group sponsored by St. Mary Student Parish and meets
monthly on the first and third Tuesday of the month. Mee"ngs are private and
confiden"al. As a diverse community of believers, we respect each person as a unique
reflec"on of God’s presence in our midst. We commit ourselves to being a community of
care, support, forma"on, reconcilia"on, and witness to jus"ce with and among gay and
lesbian persons, their parents, family members, and friends.
We teach that all love comes from God and focus on helping people reconcile their faith
with their orienta"on. We provide a safe space for discussion, healing, and prayer.
Together we reflect on Scripture and listen to the lived experience of lesbian and gay
persons and their allies. For more informa"on, contact Mark at [email protected].

Mondays at 6:30 pm
Centering Prayer is a silent prac"ce of prayer that rests on the faith
that Christ is present within by his Holy Spirit. It is an excellent
prepara"on for contempla"ve prayer, which is a grace or gi!
bestowed by God. Centering Prayer is an inten"onal openness to, or
prac"ce of "wai"ng" on God, encouraging the building of a more
in"mate rela"onship with Jesus and the movement of the Holy
Spirit. It is rooted in centuries-old monas"c prayer. The book, Open
Mind, Open Heart by Father Thomas Kea"ng, OCSO, is a good
introduc"on. The first Monday of each month we listen to an
introduc"on to centering prayer and then pray for 20 minutes.
Otherwise, we typically sit and pray for two 20-minute sessions with
a short medita"ve walk in between. All are welcome.

We welcome our Confirma"on
students today! Please pray for our 46 teens who are celebra"ng the Rite of
Enrollment today at the 5 p.m. Mass.
What is the Rite of Enrollment?
This Rite (ritual ac"on of the church) is the formal beginning for their
prepara"on. The students publicly state their desire to enter fully
into prepara"on for the Sacrament of Confirma"on.
The Rite has several parts:
The Church recognizes the students’ desire to be sealed with
the gi! of the Holy Spirit at Confirma"on.
The Church formally blesses the students and also promises to
support them and pray for them as they con"nue to study
and prepare for Confirma"on.
The students publicly express a promise to prepare faithfully
this year (through prayer, study and service).
These students, along with their sponsors, will con"nue to study and
prepare for the sacrament in the months ahead. Bishop Earl Boyea
will be here at St. Mary’s to celebrate the Confirma"on Mass on
Tuesday, March 28.
We also want to thank our 12 catechists who coordinate and help
the students during our class sessions. These undergrad and
graduate students play a huge role in sharing their faith with the
teens, as well as serving as mentors and teachers.

Reading II Colossians 1:12-20
Gospel Luke 23:35-43
In Hebron, David is hailed as king of all the tribes of Israel.
Jesus is anointed king on the wood of his cross, a sign of

have passed from darkness into the kingdom of light.
