StipendsOur graduate students receive a guaranteed stipend (living expenses) in addition to the cost of tuition. While all graduate students in the basic science departments in the Faculty of Medicine receive the same stipend, Mol Gen students have excellent success rates in obtaining external & internal graduate awards.
Where are We?Our Department is part of the Faculty of Medi-cine and resides within the St. George Campus of the University of Toronto, at the heart of down-town. Our administrative offices are located in the Medical Sciences Building (MSB; see star below) and our faculty have state-of-the-art laboratories in the MSB, Fitzgerald Building, Best Institute, Hospital for Sick Children, Mount Sinai and Princess Margaret Hospitals, Medical & Related Sciences Centre (MaRS), and the Don-nelly Centre for Cellular & Biomolecular Research (all within a few minutes walk, see below).

About Molecular Genetics... Entry into our Graduate Programme We welcome and encourage applications from Visa Students! In addition to the other require-ments, applications from visa students also require the following:
Cutting Edge Science: Our Department is a world-renowned leader in Molecular Genetics research. The best come here!
Choice: You can choose from 100 different labs for your Graduate work. From human diseases to cell biology to bioinformatics, we do it all.
Direct entry into the PhD: BSc grads with an average of A- or better may apply to either our PhD or MSc program. Students that choose to enroll into our MSc program can transfer to a PhD at a later date.
A Perfect Fit: You will have the opportunity to rotate through at least 3 labs to learn about different research areas and supervision styles before choosing your project. Unlike other departments, our (non-visa) students are not required to have confirmed a supervisor upon joining our Department. Our rotation system will help you find the perfect match between you and your future lab!
While the discipline of genetics has itsorigins in the pioneering work of Mendelover a century ago, the modern revolutionin genetics began with the developmentof methods for the cloning & sequencing of individual genes. Genetic engineering has had a phenomenal impact on all aspects of biological & medical sciences, and indeed every day life. With state-of-the-art training in molecular genetics, our graduate students & postdoctoral fellows continue to be anintegral part of the molecular revolution.
Why Choose MoGen for Graduate Studies?
Academic Background: Successful appli-cants typically have an undergraduate degree in biochemistry, cell biology, genet-ics, microbiology or molecular biology. We also have successful students with back-grounds in chemistry, physics & computer science. The latter disciplines can provide a good foundation for students interested in structural biology or bioinformatics. There-fore, we encourage any student interested in our programs to apply.
Grades: M.Sc. applicants will have a 4-year B. Sc. degree with a minimum B+ average in the last two years and strong grades in relevant courses. Ph.D. applicants will have a minimum A- average (in BSc or MSc).
What Does Your Future Hold?Technological advances in genetics & biology have vastly broadened the career opportunities for our Graduates, who are in high demand in academic aepartments, medical schools, and research institutes throughout the world. Huge opportuni-ties in the biotechnology & pharmaceutical industries have expanded the lure of Molecular Genetics. With a Molecular Genetics degree, your future is limited only by your imagination!
Experience: A successful applicant will have wet or dry lab experience in a labora-tory setting, which may include a fourth-year B.Sc. thesis project or summer or co-op work .
Reputation: Finally, a successful applicant will have 2 letters from current and past mentors who can testify positively about the applicant’s abilities and character.
It’s a Small World...
See www.moleculargenetics.utoronto.ca for more details about applications for visa-students.
English Proficiency: Applicants who completed their previous degrees in a language other than English must take an accepted English proficiency exam.
Finding a Sponsor: Visa students must FIRST find a Professor within our Depart-ment willing to Sponsor them before their application is considered.
