Sheet Metal Grommets

Neck Washers - telescoping, barrel to barrel setting, reinforces the hole with two entire parts.

Self-Piercing Grommets and Washers - will pierce most fabrics without pre-punching a hole, while setting the grommet and washer in the same action.

Terminology

Standard Tolerances Settings

ROLL SCORED FLARED

There are three basic types of settings...Roll (or coil), Scored,or Flared. The most common is the Roll which provides asmooth, rounded, uniform surface. A Scored setting dividesthe end of the barrel into equal segments to provide extra gripstrength in soft materials. A Flared setting is commonly usedin PC boards and provides a funnel appearance often usedfor soldering.

Coil/Grip RangesNo two applications being alike, it’s impossible to offer spe-cific standards as to how much barrel length there should beto obtain proper coil/grip. Too much length can result in barrel buckling (collapsing). Too little may mean loss of gripstrength. Rigid materials usually need less; soft flexible

materials will need more, as a wide coil (to grip more mate-rial) is desirable. If parts fastened are exposed to unusualstresses, extra length is usually desirable, even thoughmaterials may be rigid in nature.

As a general guide in preliminary selection, the following should be helpful:

Eyelet Diameter: 3/64” to 1/16” 3/32” to 1/8” 5/32” to 3/16” 1/4” or more

Additional Length: 1/32” 1/16” 3/32” 1/8”

For final determination as to proper length, after selecting an eyelet let us make actual settings for your functional test-ing. Or, send samples of your components and we’ll select an eyelet and forward the settings for your review.

Rolled Flange: A finished and decora-tive appearance make the Rolled Flangea popular choice. When set, the underedges of the flange lend well to obtain-ing a tight setting by gripping the work.

Flat Flange: Usually selected whenminimum above surface projection isdesired, or where a recessed hole isused for clearance requirements. In softor thin materials they may be chosento avoid the flange cutting through thematerial.

Clipped Flange: Where space con-straints require virtually no flange, theusual flange area is clipped (trimmed)as close as possible to the outsidediameter of the barrel.

Funnel Flange: Popular in the elec-tronics industry for easy insertion ofleads, and/or trapping of solder flow onPC boards. Used for costume jewelrywhere gem stones are glued into thefunnel contour.

Bell Flange: Also ideal for easyacceptance of leads. The rounded innercontour reduces abrasion where wire,cord, or rope is passed through thelength of the barrel.

Embossed Flange: Combines the con-tour of the rolled and flat flange to pro-vide the holding power of the roll with aflat outer edge to reduce the chance ofcutting through the work.

Custom Flanges: A wide variety ofcustom shape flanges are available forunique applications. Most of our stan-dard eyelets can be altered to providethe configuration you may need.

Straight Barrel: Straight barrel eyeletsare the most commonly used. Theholes in the materials to be fastenedtogether are usually the same size, andthe straight barrel aids in alignment.

Tapered Barrel: The barrel has a definite tapering down of diameter fromjust under the flange to the bottom end.Desirable primarily in fastening softmaterials since the taper provides aneasy insertion into the work.

Shoulder Eyelets: So called because the barrel consists of two distinct diam-eters resulting in a stepped shouldereffect. Used to join parts with dissimilarhole sizes; or with the upper (larger)barrel portion acting as a spacer.

Closed End: A closed end can be usedto fasten different pieces together whileeliminating the pass through of air, dirt,grease, or other foreign matter. To set,the end of the barrel is bumped to col-lapse tightly against the work pieces.Also commonly used as a press fit intomaterials as a hole reinforcement toseat dowel, rods, etc.

Oblong and Square Barrels: In addition to the most common barrelstyles described above, Oblong andSquare Barrels are popular for specialized applications.

Pre-Coiled: Normally used as spacers,they are frequently molded in place inrubber or plastics.

Rivet Caps Available for C-E 100, C-E 123, C-E 125series, rivet caps add strength and provide a more finished appearance.

Caps may be hand fed to the bottom of set tool.

Stimpson Quick Rivets are ideal for quick, simplefastening/joining of light weight materials. Easy touse, these parts can be collapsed by use of ahammer or inexpensive hand machine through apre-punched hole. For production quantity usage,automatic feed machines are available for feedingone or both parts. Available in most sizes in bothbrass and steel, they can be plated in a variety offinishes to meet your requirements.

Stimpson Side Prong and Spot Rivets are madefrom steel and brass and can be plated in a vari-ety of finishes to meet your needs. Most of theseitems can be furnished in varying lengths andspecial design heads showing trademarks, mono-grams, etc. can be made to order. The followingis a sampling of the types of Side Prong and Spot Rivets which are available.

We’ve chosen some of our most popular Hole Plugs for display on these pages. However, if youcan’t find one to fit your requirements, don’t be concerned for we have over 300 additional HolePlugs to choose from. In addition, new Hole Plugs are continually being developed to meet ourcustomers’ special applications (see page 35 for examples).

Most of our Hole Plugs can be made from brass, steel and #1050 Carbon Steel, as your need requires. Other metals, such as Stainless Steel, are available for special situations. With minor tooling modifications most parts can be furnished stamped with your logo, with a different hole size in head, or with one or more prongs removed.

With a fax of your print and/or details of your application, we will be pleased to recommenda Standard or Special Hole Plug appropriate for your application.

Low cost and versatile, the 405machine is availablewith either a heavyduty cast iron frame,or in a lighter versionaluminum frame.Ideal for settingStimpson Self-Piercing Grommets & Washers.

Models J-239 and J-239R are fully automatic, dual feed grommeting machineswhich will, in a single action, punch out ahole in your material while simultaneouslysetting both the grommet and washer.They are completely electronic and do notrequire pneumatic service.

The Model J-237 is the single feed version(requires the hand feeding of the washer)of the Model J-239. In place of an automatic feed of the washer, the J-237uses a hand operated shuttle device tomove the washer into place, maintainingthe operator’s hands at a safe distancefrom the setting dies.

Model S-96

Provides automatic feedingand attaching of Stimpson CE® Rivets in light to medium applications.Engineered for versatility,this pneumatic machinecan be fitted with optional,interchangeable roadways,hopper boxes and settingtools, allowing for use withthe entire line of StimpsonCE® Rivets.

The S-92 GW is a dual feed, heavy dutygrommeting machine. It offers the attractiveadvantage of being able to make settings inheavy duty industrial fabrics by punching outthe hole and then attaching the grommet &washer in a single cycle. In addition, a material thickness compensator allowsmaterials with thickness difference of up to1/8” to be set without a setting tool adjust-ment. Available for grommet & washer sizes#00 to #4 inclusive.

Designed to use small to midsize eyelets in most moderatevolume applications, the verypopular Model S-83 is highlyversatile and can be used tomake single or multiple eyeletsettings. Models S-G83 and S-G2R-83 are used to setgrommet sizes #00 to #2 inconjunction with a hand fed washer.

A dual feed, heavy duty grommetingmachine which pierces your material whileit automatically feeds and sets both thegrommet and the washer all with one tripping of the electric foot switch.Available for rolled rim grommet sizes #0 to #4 with matching spur washer, andplain grommet and matching neck washer,sizes #00 to #4.

This pneumatic eyeletingmachine is specifically designedfor inserting small eyelets intolight-duty applications. Raceways and setting tools areinterchangeable and the machineis easily converted from one sizeeyelet to another in a matter ofminutes.

The Model S-98 is a heavy duty grommetingmachine which will, in a single revolution,punch out a hole in your material whilesimultaneously feeding and setting the grommet. Using advanced cuttingtechnology, the S-98 can punch a hole ineven the most challenging of fabrics such as nylon or kevlar. A material thickness compensator allows materials with thicknessdifference of up to 1/8” to be set without asetting tool adjustment.

It is available asa single or double revolution model.The single revolution machine canbe used for grommet settings where materials are pre-punched.
