As we enter the holiday season, we should be mindful of how blessed we are each and every day. Please take time over the holiday season to spend with your family. Read a good book, play a fun game, or even just take the time to sit and listen to how much your child has grown since the start of the school year. The staff here at Stevenson School would like to wish you and your family a safe, joyous holiday season and a Happy New Year! Merry Christmas!!

Absent / Tardy
If your child is absent or will be tardy, call the office by 9:30am. The absence is unexcused if the office does not receive a phone call on or before the day of the absence. Attendance is vital for the learning your child achieves and also has an impact on the funding received by our district from the state.
Tardy reminder: Students need to be in their classrooms by 9:00am so they are not counted as tardy. Some reasons absences /tardies are not excused:
Visiting relatives, on vacation or extending the weekend—absences are unexcused
If a child is absent and the school was not contacted—absences are unexcused
If a child misses the bus or the family car doesn’t work—absences are unexcused
Leaving school early without medical cause—absences are unexcused
Getting hair done, baby-sitting siblings or oversleeping—absences are unexcused
More information regarding attendance and absences can be found on pages 33—35 of the District 87 Elementary Student Handbook.
Important Message for Parents
To minimize disruptions to instruction, we need your help! The most significant reasons
for class interruptions each day are students arriving late, calling students down for early
dismissal and announcing changes of transportation. We understand that some
appointments and emergency changes are necessary and cannot always be avoided,
but please make every effort to make appointments after school hours and send written
communication to school with your child for any transportation changes.
Please be advised that at the end of each day all students participate in our reading intervention
program. If possible, please refrain from picking up students during this time (2:40p-3:10p). Many
students move to other classrooms during this time, and it is an important instruction time for them.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation with this important matter!

Book Fair Update:
The Monarch Award:
The Bluestem Award:
During their LMC time each week, kinder-
garten through second grade classes are
listening to one of the Monarch Award Nom-
inee books. Once we have read and com-
pleted activities with each of the 20 books
on the nominee list, students will vote for
their favorite. Our K-2 student votes will be
submitted to the official committee by
March 15th. Be sure to ask your child about
their favorite Monarch nominee book so far.
This year’s Wild West Book Fair was a huge
success. Our sales total was over $3,500.
Thank you to all of the families that sup-
ported our school by purchasing items
from our book fair. I’d also like to thank all
the wonderful volunteers for dedicating
your time to our school.
The 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students also
have award books they are reading in
preparation for voting that will take place
by March 15th. The Bluestem Award also
has a list of 20 books; however, not all of
them will be read aloud to the students
since most of them are chapter books. To
be eligible to vote, third, fourth and fifth
graders must read and take Reading
Counts comprehension quizzes on at least
four of the books from the master list.
Look for the Bluestem sticker on the spine
label of the books your child is bringing
home from the library and ask them how
many of the 20 books they have read so
far.
On Thursday, December 14 (during the Holiday Tea) at 7 p.m. at Stevenson Elementary,
FIFTH GRADE students will be singing “December in Our Town”
Come enjoy this wonderful celebration highlighting the talent of our 5th grade students. Students can dress up for this special night. Please have your child in the music room 5-10 minutes before the show to warm up his/her voice.
We look forward to sharing this 30-minute show with you! Mark your calendars for Thursday, December 14, to support these fantastic kids!

Twelve Health and Safety Tips for the Holidays
Give the gift of health and safety to yourself and others by following these holiday tips.
1. Wash hands often to keep yourself from spreading germs and getting sick. Wash your hands with soap and clean running water for at least 20
seconds. Here’s a quick video from youtube on proper hand washing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d5qovHD_kjQ 2. Bundle up to stay dry and warm. Wear appropriate outdoor clothing: layers of light, warm clothing; mittens; hats; scarves; and waterproof boots. 3 Manage stress. Don' t overcommit yourself and prevent holiday anxiety and pressure. Get enough sleep. 4. Don't drink and drive or let others drink and drive. Whenever anyone dr ives drunk, they put everyone on the road in danger . 5. Be smoke-free. Avoid smoking and secondhand smoke. There is NO safe amount of tobacco or secondhand smoke. Breathing even a little secondhand smoke can be dangerous. 6. Fasten seat belts while dr iving or r iding in a motor vehicle. Always buckle your child in the car using a child safety seat, booster seat, or seat belt according to his/ her height, weight, and age. Use a seat belt on every trip, no matter how short the trip. 7. Get exams and screenings. Ask what exams you need and when to get them. Update your personal and family history. 8. Get your vaccinations, which help prevent diseases and save lives. 9. Monitor the children. Keep potentially dangerous toys, food, dr inks, household items, and other objects out of kids' r each. Dress warmly for out door activities. Develop and reinforce rules about acceptable and safe behaviors including electronic media. 10. Practice fire safety. Most residential fires occur dur ing the winter months, so be careful to never leave fireplaces, space heater s, stoves, or can dles unattended. Have an emergency plan and practice it regularly. 11. Prepare food safely. Remember these simple steps: wash hands and surfaces often, avoid cross-contamination, cook foods to proper temperatures, and refrigerate promptly. 12. Eat healthy, and get moving. Eat fruits and vegetables. Limit your por tion sizes and foods high in fat, salt and sugar . Be active for at least 2½ hours a week and help kids and teens be active for at least 1 hour a day.

Upcoming Events
Kitchen Chat
Did you know we have five breakfast choices every morning during
the school week? The cost is $2.00 for a paid student, 40 cents
for reduced, and if your student receives free lunch, breakfast is
free as well. Breakfast time is 8:30 a.m. until 8:48 a.m. Students
arriving after that time can take a brown bag breakfast to eat in
their classroom.
With Winter break coming, we would like to encourage you to take
some time with your children and cook or bake. It can be
something easy, like a roll of cookies. The kids will love it, and the
memories you create will be warm ones— not to mention tasty! We
wish all of our Stevenson Family a Happy & Healthy Holiday
Season!
From our Kitchen to Yours— see you in 2018!

Please dress your children appropriately for cold weather. Remember we are outside at recess if the wind chill is 20 degrees or above. Be sure to mark your child’s name on
their winter clothing.
In the event of severe winter weather WJBC is the official radio station that will announce school closings. Parents
should listen to WJBC 1230 AM starting at 6:00am to find out if school is closed.
You should also receive a call from the District 87 School Reach System informing you of any school closures. Please
make sure the office has your correct phone numbers. Thank you!
