As a senior designer I have gained valuable experience using design to improve many aspects of a business. This has primarily involved product design and branding, but has also extended to improving design methodologies, project management, quality & customer care and increasing sales. I firmly believe that all businesses can benefit from good design and good design management. I love what I do and I want to keep designing new and exciting products.
EMPLOYMENT
TGOGC LtdSenior DesignerApril 2011 – Presentwww.tgogc.com
I was employed to redesign a complete new range of outdoor gym equipment to be manufactured in the UK. When I joined all products were being imported from China. Over the last two years I have managed a small in house design team and worked with several UK manufactuers to produce a range of 14 new products which are now being installed worldwide.During this time I have worked closely with adidas to develop a range of outdoor sports facilities called ‘adiZones’ as part of the London Olympic Legacy project.Recently I have developed a new range of cardio equipment that produces ‘People Power’. These products are already being sold in over 10 countries and have been nominateed for a ‘Green Hero’s’ award. My other responsibilties include all product, marketing and brand related activities within the company. The design and development of any new products, the website, company business cards and brochures.
Crown InternationalSenior DesignerJan 2006 – April 2011www.crown-international.co.uk
I designed and implemented several projects from initial brief and concept sketching through to manufacturing and then overseeing the installations. The VMC Pole project was the largest of these projects worth £1.2 million. This product went on to win serval industry awards. The ‘SmartPole’ Safety Camera was one of my first professional projects after I left university and is being sold worldwide. I implemented new design methodologies into a very traditional manufacturing firm to increase efficiency, quality
and marketability. This resulted in Crown exporting into six new countries, including America, Qatar and New Zealand. The new VMC Pole has also opened up a new motorway infrastructure market for Crown to further develop.Utilising well established good design practices to constantly improve processes, including the introduction of lean manufacturing techniques and the reduction of over engineering. This resulted in increased profitability as well as reduced lead times.I also redesign of the company logo, website and brochure. Producing all presentation, exhibition and advertising graphics.

As Senior Designer at Crown International I worked on the largest and most complex project I have undertaken so far in my career. As part of the planned M4 motorway upgrade scheme, the Welsh Assembly Government wanted improved access to motorway signs. My team and I produced a comprehensive brief, designed the product and modelled a finalised digital prototype within a three and a half month deadline. We designed a cantilevered pole to carry a variable message sign over the carriageway. What makes the VMC (verge mounted cantilevered) pole stand out in terms of innovation, is that it allows the sign to rotate round 90° and then lower onto the verge by the side of the road for safe maintenance.

Gym RangeI undertook a comprehensive user and customer research project before undertaking the design of the new range of TGOGC outdoor gym equipment.
This page shows a range of early concept ideas and mechanism considerations. Each concept was developed into a 3D Solidworks model, manufacturing technical drawings produced, and prototypes made and tested. These products are now in production.

The project was undertaken to update the previous design. The brief was to improve vandal protection, the ease of operation and, if achievable, improve public perceptions.
The result is a clean, fully inclusive design that is smooth and easy to operate and importantly requires no maintenance. The softer aesthetic is far less aggressive than its predecessor.
All of the major camera vendors have opted for the new ‘SmartPole’ design and there are current over 200 in operation from Sussex to Qatar.

Smart Pole_DevelopmentRedesigning the safety camera was a unique project to have straight out of university. To understand what improvements were needed I approached experienced maintenance staff, motorists and councillors of the ‘Safety Camera Partnerships’. I produced a bespoke design for each of the five worldwide camera vendors.
