GENDER: The ‘Macho’ man Concerning gender, the

stereotypical man must have muscles and be “Macho” to fit in with society.

His arms are crossed to flaunt his muscles in a manly way, and like him ‘macho’ men tend not to wear much in order to show off. (e.g. in films)

GENDER: The “Housewife” Concerning gender, the

stereotypical woman should be a stay at home mum who cooks, cleans and supports her husband.

They usually wear comfy clothes but girly, i.e mumsy. They also wear aprons while doing household chores. They’re also shown gossiping a lot with other women.

Sexuality: Gay/Lesbian

Gay people are presented usually as the opposite sex in the media, gay men tend to act really feminine and the women are presented as really butch.

Disabled people are normally portrayed as incapable of doing the same things that “normal” people are.

Regional Identity

Making jokes about people of a different regional identity is normal, for example people label the Irish as being drunks, and swearing a lot. Also that the Welsh have intimate connections with sheep. LOL :D

Race

We have many negative stereotypes about other races that have been more and more exaggerated over the years.

For example, stereotypically; The Japanese are supposedly all highly intelligent, and obsessed with technology.

The rich; or upper class, are presented as stuck up, and the perfect image for a stereotypical British citizen.

The poor; or lower class, are seen as con-men, druggies or beggars

The age groups that has most stereotypical views aimed at it, are teenagers and pensioners.

Teens are seen as reckless, out of control and intimidating. Whereas old people either grumpy and criticizing, or kind and patronizing.
