Step 1: Copy down the following quote, explain it in your own words, and state whether it is true or false:

"Difficulties are things that show what men are."

--Epictetus

"Difficulties are things that show what men are.--EpictetusStep 2: Choose two different works of literature that show this quote to be true. Write down the titles, authors, and one sentence explaining how the quote is demonstrated in each work.

Step 3: For each work of literature, write one sentence explaining how the author used a literary element to demonstrate that the quote is true. Use a different element for each work.

Step 4: Write an intro that explains the quote, agrees with the quote, and ends with a thesis stating how each work of literature proves the quote.

"Difficulties are things that show what men are.--Epictetus

Step 5: Write two body paragraphs, one for each work of literature. Your topic sentences should give the title, author, and the literary element used to prove the quote (Hint: Look back at what you wrote in Step 3!) Use specific details from the text to support your claims.

Step 6: Write a conclusion paragraph that reiterates your main ideas: what the quotes means, and how each work uses a literary element to show that the quote is true.

Step 7: If there is time, proofread for grammar, usage, punctuation, spelling, and paragraphing. Edit by crossing out neatly or by clearly labeling where you have added information. If you have time, you will gain the most points by looking for places where you can appropriately add transition words.
