Steps to Take if You’re in a Car Accident in California

By Attorney Douglas Borthwick

A car accident can be confusing and overwhelming. However, you should be sure to take the following steps if

you’re ever in one:

1. Stop! California state law requires that you stop the car if you’re driving and get involved in a car accident,

regardless of whether you hit another moving car, a parked car, or personal property.

2. Call the cops: A police officer will create a written report, which is especially important if one member of the party is

injured. This report can be used to obtain damages in court.

3. Call an ambulance: If someone is injured, the law requires that you take steps to provide assistance to injured parties, which includes calling an ambulance or providing first aid.

4. Gather information: While waiting for a cop, compile the following information abut the other party: driver’s license,

vehicle registration, car license number, and name and address of insurance company. Also obtain personal information of any witnesses. You should also create a diagram of the accident and take note of weather conditions, the time, and the date.

Once the cops arrive, be sure to get the attending police officer’s contact information.

By taking these steps, you will be better prepared to handle any resulting legal dispute. You should also consider going to a

doctor and contacting your lawyer.
