Microsoft wants administrators of Windows Server 2008 editions (which ships in the usual flavors of Standard, Enterprise, Data Center and Itanium-specific code) to think of the server as playing certain roles. Server roles are aggregated objects that suit commonly thought-of services, such as print services, file sharing, DNS, DHCP, Active Directory Domain Controller and IIS-based Web services. Microsoft has defined 18 roles in all. There's even a minimalist installation called Windows Server Core that can run various server roles (such as DNS, DHCP, Active Directory components) but not applications (like SQL Server or IIS dynamic pages). It's otherwise a scripted host system for headless operations. There's no GUI front end to a Windows Server Core box, but it is managed by a command line interface (CLI), scripts, remotely via System Manager or other management applications that support Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI), or by Remote Terminal Services. It's also a potential resource-slimmed substrate for Hyper-V and virtualization architectures. However, Windows Server 2008 natively was initially shipped without the support virtualization, therefore for virtualization; you will need to either download and install SP2 or get hold of the Windows Server 2008 R2. Virtualization and consolidation of servers and apps across your network can offer notable business results, like low hardware, facility and energy costs, simplified management and support and reduced carbon footprint. Windows Server 2008 R2 has built in Hyper-V to virtualize your system resources without the cost of third-party software and Live Migration to move virtual machines with virtually no downtime. Moreover, with Microsoft SQL Server 2008 you can consolidate database servers, meet high availability needs and optimize performance; creating virtual data centers that help you improve hardware utilization and reduce admin expenses. Meanwhile, Microsoft System Center handles your virtual and physical environments across multiple operating systems like Windows, Linux/UNIX, and gives you control over it all from a single pane of glassIn this Hands-on Systems Integration Training Lab, we’re going undertake a step-by-step installation, configuration of Windows Server 2008. This project was demonstrated entirely using VMware; however, once you perfect the setup and configuration steps, you can migrate to physical servers to take advantage of the power of Windows Server 2008.

Part 1: Install & Configure Windows Server 2008

Step 1: Install Windows Server 2008 To install Windows Server 2008, perform the following procedure:

1. Grab your Windows Server 2008 DVD and insert it into your CD/DVD drive

2. Restart your computer if installing on a physical machine or perform the pre-install configuration if installing on a Virtual PC or VMware. In this step-by-step guide, we’re using VMware.

3. Figure 1 shows the first installation screen, accept the default or change as desired, and click Next.

5. On Fig. 3, wait for the process to complete!
