Use this stationary to help track your exercise skills. Now that you’re at home, you need to keep up your strength and flexibility. When you get back to school, you want to be able to run just as fast, lift just as much and play just as hard as ever!

Exercise is good for you! It helps release chemicals in your brain that make you feel happy. These chemicals are called endorphins (end-or-fins). Endorphins interact with your brain to help reduce the feeling of pain and allow the body to improve itself while feeling joyful! Keeping your brain strong and happy is just as important as keeping your body strong and happy!

Exercise helps your body stay healthy. Exercise promotes increased blood flow. Did you know that your blood carries oxygen all over your body? When you take a breath, the air you breathe contains an element called oxygen. Oxygen travels through your nose down to your lungs. Inside of your lungs, oxygen is absorbed into the blood stream in a complex process. Your blood cells then take the oxygen and deliver it all over your body using your arteries and veins to deliver! Oxygen is delivered to the muscles, which are working very hard to stay strong and maintain your health so that you can enjoy playtime every day! It is important to take care of your body, especially your heart because, when it beats, it pushes the blood through the body to the locations where it is needed most.

Do you know how to track your heartbeats? Practice and learn in this manual so you can exercise your brain along with your body! Do you want to see how strong you can get, how flexible you can become and how fast you can run before you return to school next year? Well let’s do this! Track yourself in this manual. Challenge your siblings, mom, dad, grandma and grandpa, your dog or your neighbors to get outside and exercise with you! Post your exercise skills and updates to the social media pages here or use the tag #STEMFitnessChampion to be featured on our social media pages! Get STEM strong!

YOUR BODY IS STRONG! LET’S KEEP IT THAT WAY!

First, you want to track your resting heart rate. Your resting heart rate is defined as the beats per minute that your heart pumps without extra stress on the heart (such as walking, running or getting scared from a prank your sibling puts on you!). Try taking your resting heart rate when you wake up in the morning or before you go exercise. Here’s how you do it:

1. To check your pulse at your wrist, place two fingers between the bone and the tendon over your radial artery — which is located on the thumb side of your wrist.

2. When you feel your pulse, count the number of beats in 15 seconds.

3. Multiply this number by four to calculate your beats per minute.

These instructions courtesy of The Mayo Clinic. Visit https://www.mayoclinic.org/how-to-take-pulse/art-20482581 for visual tutorials on how to measure your resting heart rate (pulse)!
