TRANSCRIPT
Check in with participants
• How's it going?• Any issues we can help with?• How many students are you working with?
Science: Procedures• Materials list
• Step by step so others may duplicate exactly• detailed amounts• how variables will be measured
• Repeat trials for multiple conditions!!!• at least 3• multiple subjects (i.e. plants, people interviewed)• multiple tests (i.e. rolling object down a ramp many times
Engineering: design criteria• Types of design requirement/criteria for general products
• Materials list - same as science
• Preliminary design & prototypes• Sketches, drawings and models• Use readily available materials: cardboard, paper, foam-core, found
objects• Construction kits such as lego, meccano, fishertechnik, electric
circuit boards
What Kind of Data Do Scientist/Engineers Use?• Determine how researchers in your field of study interpret
their data.
• Take note of any mathematical formulas or equations that will be needed to describe the results of the experiment
• Take note of any information that will be needed to build a prototype.
Simple data table
Independent
Variable
(units)
Responding Variable

Trial 1 Trial 2 Trial 3 Average
Take Pictures• Observational data
• Reminders of events
• Use for display boards
• Must be in focus & understandable by anyone!
Numerical Data
Science• controlled variables
• independent (manipulated) variable
• dependent (responding) variable
Engineering• design criteria
• prototype
• rebuild
Monitor & Adjust …If When Something Goes Wrong• Most experiments/ designs do go "wrong”.
• Keep a complete record in notebook!
Questions to Ask When Looking at Data• Did I collect enough data?
• Is the data accurate?
• Did my results match my hypothesis? If, yes...
• How does the data supports this conclusion?
If no… • How does the data support this conclusion?
Graphs• Used to show how the hypothesis was answered / design
met the criteria for improvement
• Most controlled investigations will be a XY Scatter
• At least one for all projects!
• Resource: Create a Graph from Kid Zone (NCES)
http://nces.ed.gov/nceskids/createagraph/
Writing the research paper• What should be included – final report check list
• Template/chart of research paper format
• Abstract – for students moving on to other fairs
Example Projects
Invention
• Quiet Down
• Junior Light Switcher
Investigation
• For the Birds
• Keep it Cool
Aiming for the local State fairs
