National Institute of Education Sciences is a national-level
comprehensive education science research institute directly
subordinate to the Ministry of Education. It aims to serve
national decision-making and focuses on the main theoretical
and practical issues which have arisen in the course of
educational reform and development. It sets up scientific
research management system and operation mechanism of
“clear responsibilities, scientific evaluation, well-organized
openness and standard management”. It exerts professional
advantages and improves research level to get high quality
research output that represents national standard and
international outlook. NIES endeavors to become the national
education think tank with Chinese characteristics and make
bigger contribution to the reform and development of
education.
Chinese Communist Party set up Office of China Educational Research under Central Academy in Yan’an.
1941
The State Council and the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee approved the establishment of China National Institute for Educational Research (CNIER) for launching education scientific research.
1957
The State Council approved the re-opening of CNIER.
1978
CNIER was renamed NIES.2011

Founding
STEM Educational Research Center was founded on June 6 , 2 0 1 7 a n d i s a t r a n s -depar tment profess iona l research institute officially a p p r o v e d b y N I E S . T h e specific construction work is carried out by the Research Center for International & Comparative Education of N I E S a n d c o n s t r u c t i o n assistance is provided by Research Center for Basic Education, Research Center for Curriculum & Pedagogy, R e s e a r c h C e n t e r f o r Information and Statistics and other related departments.
Orientation
The functional orientation of STEM Educational Research Center is: providing decision-making services for ministries such as Ministry of Education and Ministry of Science and Technology, enriching and completing STEM education theoretical system, exploring and constructing STEM education collaborative innovation mechanism. After founded for one year, it has held two sessions of “China STEM Educational Development Conference”, published China STEM Education White Book, provided MOE with Current Situation of China STEM Education Development, formulated and completed STEM Teacher Capability Grade Standard, etc.
Emphasis
The key tasks of STEM Educational Research Center is to forge the new heights of STEM educational policy consultation, construct new platform of STEM educational theoretical research and create new demonstration area of STEM educational practice and innovation.
Development
The basic development idea of STEM Educational Research Center is to construct a trans-department, trans-grade and trans-field China STEM educational development community by collaborating government agencies, scientific research institutes, schools, communities and enterprises.

4. Schools launch specific S T E M e d u c a t i o n a l i m p l e m e n t a t i o n w o r k , exploring and constructing STEM education system in practice.
