Light only when it's needed.

About 19% of the energy used world-wide goes on light-ing. This equates to an annual demand of about 2,650 terrawatt-hours. Much of this gigantic amount is wasted – partly by leaving lights switched 'ON' unnecessarily.

With sensor technology from STEINEL, wasting this resourceis a thing of the past: Light comes 'ON' automatically whenyou enter a room. And switches 'OFF' again when youleave. What's more, using low-energy lamps with our sen-sor lights is not a problem either. This way, lighting fromSTEINEL helps to save huge quantities of energy, CO2emission and costs. Besides this: Lights that switch 'ON' automatically enhance everyday convenience, safety and security. That's "intelligent energy saving".

Light 'ON'. Light 'OFF'. Controlled by sensor. You will also find a program on our website that can calculate energy savings exactly.

Sensor Systems for Outdoors

Light 'ON'. Light 'OFF'.Sensor-controlled

Heat radiation as a remote controller

The heart of a PIR sensor system iswhat's called a pyro-sensor. Thiselectronic component responds toany fluctuation in incident infraredheat radiation with a change in volt-age.

As all individuals give off infraredradiation through body heat, theyautomatically change the thermalimage detected by the sensor onentering the system's field of vision. The sudden rise in voltage thiscauses is processed by the elec-tronics for switching 'ON' light.

For sensor systems to respond tomovements within the detectionzone, they are equipped with a seg-ment lens. This divides the pyro-detector's field of vision into activeand passive zones (zones not visibleto the sensor). When a heat sourcecrosses a zone boundary, the IRradiation received changes for thesensor which then emits a signal.

Multi-sensor technology

STEINEL has developed the multi-sensor system for applications plac-ing particularly exacting demandson the size of the detection zone.Within the system, two or even threepyro-sensors are positioned at aspecific angle to each other thatadds their detection zones together.

Automatic lights are created byusing motion sensors. This is wheretwo different technologies areemployed: HF-sensors (see page76) are the ideal solution for indoors.Outdoors, only passive infrared (PIR)sensors are used.

Heat radiated from the humanbody

Any object with a temperatureabove absolute zero (-273° C) gives off electromagnetic radiation.Given the temperature range of thehuman body, this radiation lies inthe infrared portion of the spectrum. It is used by infrared sensors todetect people moving.

The segment lensfocuses IR radiation from its sur-roundings onto the sensor anddivides the areas covered in activeand passive zones (zones maskedout for the sensor). The boundarybetween these zones forms whatis called a switching zone as thesensor registers any person or

object crossing this boundary as afluctuation in radiation and emits asignal.

The segment lenses used are sim-ple Fresnel lenses or STEINEL'shigh-performance multi-lens.

Multi-sensor technology

increases the size of the detectionzone by means of two (illustrated)

or three identical pyro-sensorswithin the system.

Principle

Fresnel lenses

Fresnel lenses provide the simplestmeans of segmenting the detectionzone of an infrared detector. A sys-tem of individual lenses is arrangedhere in the form of an arc. With amaximum coverage angle of 180°,they can watch over an area of up to225 m2. A second optical windowbelow the main detection zonemakes it virtually impossible tocreep past underneath the sensorswithout being detected.

Reach

STEINEL sensors generally providea max. reach of 12 m that may beshorter when walking in a radialdirection (towards the sensor).

STEINEL multi-lens technology

Multi-lens technology (MLT) pro-vides uninterrupted coverage of asemi-spherical detection zone. Thismakes it the ideal lens system formotion detectors with double ortriple sensors.

Innovative and efficient

The mini-sensor's outstandingproperties are achieved by thespherical segmented mirrorand the state-of-the-artquadruple pyro-sensor.

Mini-sensor:Elegant, efficient andintelligent

Developing the mini-sensor, STEINELhas adopted a whole new approachto creating PIR sensor systems. Aspherical segmented mirror guidesambient IR radiation onto a state-of-the-art and extremely efficient IRsensor chip. This configuration notonly makes it possible to keep thesystem extremely small, it also per-mits the reliable detection of move-ment in a full 360° circle.

The new operating concept

To permit rapid, intuitive adjustabili-ty of the sensor electronics to indi-vidual user needs, the entire sensormodule can be taken out of thelight, set in your own time, pluggedback in again and securely locked inplace.

While settings are being made, thelight switches itself 'ON' as soon asthe sensor is removed. This is prac-tical at twilight or during the night. All of the information you need toknow is printed in the sensor mod-ule itself, obviating the need for anyoperating instructions.

Adjustment range

STEINEL sensors with a coverageangle of less than 180° are equippedwith lenses that can be tilted andturned for exact adjustment to thesituation at the point of installation.

Shrouds

All sensors come with shrouds that can be cut to size for limitingdetection zones (e.g. next to neighbouring property / roads).

Twilight setting

A control dial can be used for infi-nitely varying brightness thresholdfrom 2 lux (night) to 2000 lux (day). This prevents light from coming'ON' unnecessarily during the day.

Time setting

Adjustable to any period from 5 sec.to 15 min. to suit specific needs. After detecting movement, the lightstays 'ON' for the period selected.

Watt-o-matic (brightness control)

Provides the capability of adjustingbasic brightness from 0 – 50% ofSensorLight output. When move-ment is detected, the SensorLightswitches to full power. Shows theway from a distance and frightensoff uninvited guests.

Soft light start and soft end

Elegantly increases output from thelamp in the SensorLight to 100%power. That's kind on the eye andhelps to prolong lamp life!

Manual override

Many of STEINEL's SensorLightscan be set to stay 'ON' perma-nently for 4 hours by operating aswitch twice. Afterwards, the lightautomatically returns to sensormode.

Sensor Systems for Indoors

Light 'ON' and 'OFF'… automatically

An innovation from STEINEL – the original.

STEINEL high-frequency (HF) sen-sors instantly identify movementswithout "sensitivity" being restrictedby ambient temperature and thedirection in which the object beingdetected is moving.

The hi-tech sensors emit signalsand receive the echo reflected offwalls and surrounding objects amoment later. Responding to thechanged echo image, the sensorregisters any movement in thedetection zone within fractions of asecond and immediately switchesthe light 'ON'! The light switches'OFF' automatically after a periodyou wish to select.

STEINEL high-frequency sensorsoperate at 5.8 GHz. As these sig-nals are not obstructed by glassand thin walls, the sensor can beinstalled inside the light where theyare hidden from view. This meansnothing spoils the design ofSTEINEL SensorLights.

At approx.1 mW, their power outputis about 1000 times less than that ofa mobile phone.

Detection zone

There's no way round HF-Sensor-Lights from STEINEL. They detecteven the tiniest movement any-where within a distance of up to 8 min a 360° circle. If required, reachcan be reduced electronically to anydistance as short as 1 m.

Elegant convenience

Intelligence is something you can't see but notice. Hidden out of viewon the inside, HF-technology from STEINEL switches the attractive light'ON' "just in time".

Watchful light

STEINEL's HF-SensorLights have a detection zone that's ideal for appli-cations indoors. Providing all-round, 360° coverage, they can beinstalled on walls or ceilings.

Time setting

STEINEL HF-SensorLights areequipped with a timer that makessure the light stays 'ON' for theselected period of time. The timeyou want the light to stay 'ON' forcan be adjusted to any settingbetween 5 sec and 15 min.

Twilight setting

Setting the response threshold tobetween 2 and 2000 lux, you candetermine the level of ambientbrightness at which you want theSensorLight to come 'ON'. Whileit's still light, at dusk or when itgets dark.

Reach adjustment

STEINEL HF-SensorLights candetect movements within a radiusof 1 to 8 m. Reach is infinitely variable within this range.

Straightforward installation

STEINEL HF-SensorLights areinstalled just as quickly and easilyas conventional lights: Fix light towall or ceiling and connect phaseand neutral conductor to thescrew terminals – that's all there isto it. With the integrated sensorsystem, the only difference now isthat there's no switching 'ON' and'OFF' to do by hand any more.

Modernisation in seconds flat

STEINEL HF-SensorLights areinstalled in exactly the same way asconventional lights. They require noextra work and there are no addi-tional cables to connect either. Onthe contrary: There is no necessityfor complicated two-way doublepole reversing switches and thewiring runs they involve. Investing inthe future couldn't be easier or moreconvenient.

A matter of choice

STEINEL HF-SensorLights can beset exactly the way you want atthree infinitely adjustable controldials.

Connecting other loads

The HF-SensorLights are providedwith a separate terminal that canbe used for connecting other loads. On entering the guest toilet, forexample, an additional lamp orextractor fan then switches 'ON'together with the light. Maximumswitching capacity is 100 watts.

IP protection rating

The IP code classifies the level of protection provided by enclosures and covers used for protecting electrical equipment. The IP code is defined under IEC 529, EN 60529, DIN VDE 0470-1 and NF C 20-010.The protection ratings are defined by the letters IP (International Protection) followed by two digits. This means that the fullprotection rating consists of the two letters and the digits indicating the level of protection.

1st digitProtection of equipment against the ingress of solid, foreign objects and also protection of persons against contact withhazardous parts.

2nd digitProtection of equipment against the harmful ingress of water.

Where there is no protection rating - with regard to one of the criteria - the digit is replaced with the letter X, e.g. IP X4 or IP 6X.

1st digit

Protection against ingress of foreign objects

No particular personal protection against accidental contact with live and/or moving parts. In enclosures with no access.

Equipment provides no protection against ingressof solid, foreign objects.

0

Protection against accidental contact by large surfaces of the body (back of thehand) with live and/or moving parts. Closed areas only accessible to authorisedand trained personnel.

Protection against ingress of solid, foreign objects in a diameter > 50 mm.

1

Protection against finger contact with live and/or internal moving parts. Specific accessible areas.

Protection against ingress of solid, foreign objectsin a diameter > 12.5 mm.

2

Protection against contact between live and/or internal moving parts and tools, wires or similar objects in a thickness of > 2,5 mm. Generally accessible parts.

Protection against ingress of solid, foreign objectsin a diameter > 2.5 mm.

3

Protection against contact between live and/or internal moving parts andtools, wires or similar objects in a thickness of > 1 mm. Generally accessi-ble parts.

Protection against ingress of solid, foreign objectsin a diameter > 1 mm.

4

Complete protection against contact with live and/or internal moving parts. Areas exposed to short-term high dust deposits.

Protection against harmful, internal dust deposits.Ingress of dust is not entirely prevented. The quantityof dust entering must not interfere with operation(dust-protected).

5

Complete protection against contact with live and/or internal moving parts.Generally accessible areas.

Protection against ingress of dust (dust-tight).6

ApplicationProtection against ingress of waterIn dry areas. No particular protection.0

In areas exposed to moisture with component in predefined vertical position (e.g. condensation water).

Protection against vertically falling drops of water (protection against dripping water). Shall have noharmful effect.

1

In areas exposed to moisture with component not positioned exactly vertically (e.g. condensation water).

Protection against vertically falling drops of water (protection against dripping water). Dripping waterfalling at an angle shall have no harmful effect onequipment (enclosure) tilted at an angle of up to 15° from its normal position.

2

Areas exposed to rain and not splashing water.Protection against water falling at any angle up to 60° from the vertical. Shall have no harmful effect(protection against spraying water.)

3

Areas exposed to rain and splashing water (e.g. areas exposed to passing vehicles).

Protection against water splashing against equipment (enclosure) from any direction. Shall have no harmfuleffect (protection against spraying water).

4

Areas exposed to moderately powerful water jets.Protection against water projected by a nozzleagainst equipment (enclosure) from any direction.Shall have no harmful effect (protection againstwater jets).

5

Areas exposed to heavy wash and floodwater (e.g. jetties).Protection against heavy sea or powerful jets of water. Water in harmful quantities must not enter the equipment (enclosure) (protection against floodwater)

6

Areas washed over temporarily or covered with snow for a prolonged period.Protection against water when equipment (housing)is immersed in water under defined conditions ofpressure and time. Water must not enter in harmfulquantities (immersion).

7

In submerged function.Equipment (housing) is suitable for continuous immersion in water under conditions which shall be specified by the manufacturer (submersion). However, the conditions must not be any more severe than those for digit 7.

Safety class IIn the case of lights provided with class I protection, the protection aim is achieved by insulating live parts and connecting contactable metal parts to the protective-earth conductor. The protective-earth conductor connectionterminal is marked .

Safety class IIIn the case of lights provided with class II protection, electrical safety is ensured by means of double insulation.

Safety class IIIIn the case of light provided with class III protection, protection is based on safety extra-low voltage (SELV).

Protection classes

Marks of conformity:

VDE labelFor electrotechnical products, including products within the meaning of the German Act on Equipment andProduct Safety (GPSG) and medical products within the meaning of the German Medical Products Act (MPG).The VDE label indicates conformity to VDE provisions or European or internationally harmonised standardsand provides confirmation that the protection requirements of the pertinent guidelines are met. The VDE labelshows that the product is safe in terms of electrical, mechanical, thermal, toxic, radiological and other risk.

VDE-GS labelFor technical work equipment and ready-to-use items of daily use within the meaning of the GPSG (option-ally instead of VDE label for these products)If products are technical work equipment or ready-to-use items of daily use within the meaning of theGerman Act on Equipment and Product Safety, you can also use the VDE-GS label.

VDE-EMC labelFor equipment conforming to the standards on electromagnetic compatibility. The VDE-EMC label expresses a product's conformity with the applicable standards on the electromagneticcompatibility of products. However, this mark also signalises the reliable operation of your product in an electro-magnetic environment. As the requirements on issuing the label automatically and unreservedly cover satisfac-tion of the relevant standards.

ENEC label from VDE For products meeting harmonised certification procedures. The European standards specified in the ENEC Agreement provide the basis for testing. Products (these current-ly being lights, light components, low-energy lamps, IT equipment, transformers, appliance switches, electricalregulators and control devices, terminals, appliance couplers, some types of capacitor and radio interferencesuppression components) tested on this basis are allowed to carry VDE's ENEC label. Approval from anotherbody involved in the European certification procedure is not necessary.

VDE cable markingVDE cable marking applies to cables, leads and wiring conduits and trunkings.

CE label The manufacturer documents and declares in its sole responsibility that the product marked satisfies thebasic requirements of EU directives. This label is not a mark of tested safety and quality but is directedtowards the authority supervising the market.

F labelInformation showing that lights may be mounted on normally flammable surfaces.
