The Church of the Nativity February 4, 2018 Our Mission:

God’s family at the historic Church of the Nativity is joyfully and energetically committed to sharing Christ’s love and healing by proclaiming the Good News of the Gospel through worship and service to the world.

I want to thank the clergy, parishioners, and members of the Wardens Council and Vestry for

allowing me to serve as Senior Warden in this 175th year of Nativity’s presence in Huntsville.

I am both humbled and excited to be part of our work during this Interim period as we

prepare our wonderful Church of the Nativity Episcopal for our 12th Rector.

At our recent Camp McDowell retreat, the vestry worked together to discuss, debate, and

negotiate a realistic budget. We strived to maintain, as closely as possible, the usual budgetary

amounts for outreach, staff salaries and benefits, the care and maintenance of our beautiful

19th Century church, and to fund the search committee’s work. As many know, the Vestry

has diligently worked to maintain our budgets during a time when income from pledge has

been flat or declining and to best utilize the gifts entrusted to our care and management. We

thank parishioners for your pledges and hope those who have not pledged yet will do so soon.

The primary goal for the 2018 Vestry is to prepare Nativity for our 12th Rector and to

support the Profile and Search Committees chaired by Bill Starnes. I encourage everyone to

play an active role in the process by completing and returning a response card to assist the

profile committee in creating the Parish Profile document.

During this interim period we are called to listen, contemplate, and consider what we as a

vibrant, historic Parish want in our next Rector. With God’s help and guidance, we will soon

enter a new and exciting phase in the history of the Church of the Nativity Episcopal,

Huntsville. Thank you for your continued support and prayers during this time of transition.

Update from the Profile committee

Search for the New Rector – Parish Profile Committee

The Parish Profile Committee is actively working to gather input for

the Parish Profile, which is used to recruit and select a new rector. We

are gathering information through a three-step process.

Cards for you to describe Nativity and what you would like to see

in a new rector

Parish survey

Listening groups

We want to ensure that everyone has multiple opportunities to voice

their thoughts and opinions. It is very important that everyone partici-

pate to ensure we accurately describe Nativity.

The Profile Committee has started the process with cards which are

available in the hallway and Ridley Hall. Within several weeks, we

should have the parish survey ready, which will be available online and

on paper. It should take 10-15 minutes to complete. We are asking all

adults and teenagers to complete the survey. Our target response level

is at least as many people as attend church.

After the survey, there will be a number of listening groups, some open

session, some with small groups within the church. Their purpose is to

refine and clarify the survey results and provide further guidance to the

Discernment Committee.

What are you reading? Contributed by Mary Johnson

I am so excited that we are having Paul-Gordon Chandler come to our church to speak with us about, among other

things, the Lebanese mystic, Kahlil Gibran, author of The Prophet. As a young girl, I was introduced to The Prophet by my

grandmother, who thought it perhaps the wisest book she had ever read. I came to love it as she did and continue to

refer to its guidance and beauty many times over the years.

Hear his timeless and beautiful words on marriage, written in 1923.

Love one another, but make not a bond of Love:

Let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls.

Give one another of your bread but eat not from the same loaf.

Sing and dance together and be joyous, but let each one of you be alone,

Even as the strings of a lute are alone thought they quiver with the same music.

If you have a chance before Mr. Chandler comes, get a copy of The Prophet and drink in it’s wisdom.

Lenten Retreat

Saturday, March 10

9:00am –4:30pm

Church of the Nativity

Join us for this full-day Lenten Retreat based on the Living Compass Program: “Living Well Through Lent

2018: Loving with all Your Heart, Soul, Strength and Mind.” Marilyn Lands, M.S., LPC will facilitate our time

together.

Lent is a time for introspection and self-reflection, a time to reflect on the core of what it means to live a

Christian life. And there is nothing more central to that life than loving—loving with all our heart, soul,

strength, and mind. For people of faith, love is not an abstract or feel-good concept, but an urgent call to

radically incarnate love in how we relate to God, our neighbor, and ourselves.

The retreat time is designed to provide a foundation for

seeking a deeper experience of love and Lent, an experience that will help prepare us for the true

meaning of Easter.

Participants will receive a copy of Living Compasses “Living Well Through Lent 2018” daily devotional booklet to accompany them on their Lenten journey. Booklets will be available at the Ash Wednesday service or in the

church office. The program will begin at 9:00am and end at 4:30pm. A simple lunch will be served at noon. Participants may choose to attend the morning session

only.

There is no charge for the program but we will be accepting donations to cover the expense of lunch and

materials. To register for this free event call the Church office 256-533-2455 or register online at nativity-hsv.org.

LENTEN MEDITATIONS

The 2018 Nativity Lenten Meditation Booklets

will be available beginning on Ash Wednesday.

The booklet contains reflections on the scriptures

written by members of Nativity. Booklets are

available in Ridley Hall and on the tables outside

Bibb Chapel & Lady Chapel. If you would like to

receive the meditations by email each Wednesday

& Sunday during Lent please contact the church

office or SIGN UP HERE.

Stewardship of Creation Contributed by David Chadwick

As the first line of Psalm 24 declares, “"The earth is the Lord's, and

everything in it, the world, and all who live in it." The world, including

ourselves, belongs to God. So what should our relationship with the

physical world be? We cannot truly be owners, but we can be stewards of

our planet and everything that we are in contact with, including our

property, income, goods, time, skills and ourselves.

Man’s relationship with our planet is often fraught. We mine for minerals, extract oil from the deep, and remove

mountains for coal. The consequences of human consumption are often destructive, and we should try to minimize these

impacts, working to return the environment to a state that nature can reclaim and our children can enjoy. Sometimes

human intervention has positive consequences. I joined a birdwatching group at Lake Guntersville yesterday, a lake that

didn’t exist until the TVA built the Guntersville Dam in 1939. In addition to generating electricity using a renewable

resource (rain!), the dam holds back a 75 mile long lake that is used extensively for recreation and is a haven for wildlife.

We counted over 1,000 ducks, grebes and loons in a couple of hours of birdwatching, with the ducks starting to pair up

and prepare for their migration north to breed. God’s creation has a great way of adapting and thriving when given a

chance. We should strive to protect and enrich the land we are stewards of, from our yards and neighbourhoods, to our

state and national parks and refuges.

Bible Museum Trip

Lynne Berry Vallely has put together a trip to Washington, DC, for her and her mother in honor of her mother's birthday. They welcome members of Nativity and friends to join them. They will stay at the Mandarin Oriental hotel and visit the new Museum of the Bible and the National Gallery of Art, where Lynne will point out paintings that she teaches in her Sunday School classes. They will have afternoon tea at the St. Regis and dinner at a nice restaurant each night. With luck, the cherry blossoms will be in bloom.

For more information, contact Lynne at [email protected] or 256-479-1010.

Please join us on Sunday, February 25th, to learn about The Nativity Trust and the Nativity Historical

Preservation Foundation. There will be a presentation on the workings of each endowment so

parishioners can better understand why these funds are so important to the future well being of

Nativity. You will learn how the two funds are different, how they are invested, how they are utilized

and other important information so you can make an informed decision when doing your estate

Senior Cross

Presentation

At the 11:00 service on Sunday February 11, we will honor our senior Acolytes by presenting them with silver crosses engraved with their initials. These young people have served as torches, banner bearers, servers and crucifers, some for as many as six years! They have faithfully arrived on Sunday mornings, occasionally following prom and homecoming, sometimes driving in early from the lake, and often sandwiching their acolyte duties between sports tournaments and band concerts. In this final year of their service, we watch excitedly as they make their college visits and take the SAT’s, leading them to the next phase of their journey. Please join us in thanking them for their dedication to this ministry at Nativity!
