• Th e Dazzling Dave, Yo-Yo Man, will be entertaining fairgo-ers from a stage in front of the 4-H building. He will perform three shows daily plus stroll around the grounds.

• Well over 800 gallons of waste grease is collected each year at the fair.

• Volunteer hosts in the Muckle Museum are needed during fair week. If you can help, please call Nancy Vaillencourt and leave a message…413-0478.

• A big hit in the 40s until the mid-60s was the steam train that ran a circle where Fair Square Park is now located. It gave thou-sands of rides to adults and kids

each year.• The All American Lum-

berjack Show will feature two lumberjacks. The woods boss will go foot to foot in ten events consisting of log boom racing, racing hot saws, log rolling cross cut sawing, ax throwing, spring board tree topping and more.

• Th e 1943 fair was cancelled because of World War II. Gas shortages meant exhibits, en-tertainment, and the carnival couldn’t get to the fair.

• More than 80 musical acts will perform at this year’s fair.

• Th e very fi rst Steeel County Free Fair was held in 1860.

• Twenty-fi ve percent attending the SCFF come 26 miles or more. Ten percent come from over 60 miles.

• Butter-making competition was one of the biggest attractions at the fair from 1923 until the de-partment closed in 1969. Over 30 Steele County butter makers competed in the annual contest. Today, there is only one butter-maker in Steele County.

• Th e 1924 fair included air-plane rides. Th e planes used the race track as a runway.

• Almost 5,000 people buy the unlimited Mega-Ride Ticket for the midway rides…good all six days.

• Th e SCFF supports agricul-ture. Ninty-six percent of all fair-goers eat food when they are here

• In 1874, the Steele County Fair was only one day because of a grasshopper invasion.

• The 1906 fair was held downtown in Owatonna and the big thrill was the “Slide of Life” from the Courthouse to Central Park.

• Looking for new foods at the fair? Try these: Deep fried caramel apples; Tammy’s Sam-mys — a number of gourmet fresh sandwiches, Portabella mushrooms with green peppers; Dutch Proff erties — Crepe/Pan-cake Creation and waffl es; Jelly Belly Smoothies; Porkette Steak on a Stick; Deep Fried Chocolate Chip Cookies.

• Th e Muckle Museum at the fair sports a new look this year thanks to the work of Sharon Stark, Nancy Vaillancourt and Sylvan Durban of the Owatonna Arts Center.
