for Andersen 400 Series Woodwright® & Tilt-Wash Double-Hung, Picture, and Transom Windows and 400 Series Double-Hung Half Circle and Flexiframe® Specialty Windows

Unless specifically ordered, Andersen windows are not equipped with safety glass, and if broken, could fragment causing injury. Many laws and building codes require safety glass in locations adjacent to or near doors. Andersen windows are available with safety glass that could reduce the likelihood of injury when broken. Information on safety glass is available from your local Andersen dealer.

• Andersen head flashing and installation flanges DO NOT take the place of window and door flashing tape or liquid flashing. Window or door must be properly flashed and sealed with a material compatible sealant for protection against water and air infiltration. Failure to do so could result in product or property damage.• DO NOT apply any type of film to insulating glass. Doing so could cause thermal stress conditions and result in glass damage. Shading devices (e.g. insulated coverings, shutters, etc.) could also cause thermal stress and condensation causing deterioration of windows or doors.

Instructions are for typical, new wood-framed wall construction with weather protection in place.

Instructions may not be right for all installations due to building design, construction materials or methods used and/or building or site conditions. Consult a contractor or architect for recommendations.

Flanges on the unit alone will not properly flash and seal the window. Follow these instructions carefully.

▶ Read guide from beginning to end before starting installation. Read all warnings and cautions during unit installation.

▶ Check with your local building code official to identify and confirm compliance with local building code requirements.

Windows and doors can be heavy. Use safe lifting techniques and a reasonable number of people with enough strength to lift, carry, and install window and door products. Heavier windows and doors will require mechanical assistance. Failure to do so could result in injury, product or property damage.

Use caution when working at elevated heights and around window and door openings. Follow the manufacturers’ instructions for ladders and scaffolding. Failure to do so could result in injury or death.

Follow manufacturers’ instructions for hand and power tools. Always wear safety glasses. Failure to do so could result in injury, product or property damage.

Units may be completed horizontally and then lifted into the rough opening or joined in sections and assembled in the rough opening. The method used will depend on the combination size and weight, and on the installer's individual preferences.

• The Andersen steel reinforced joining products are designed to give added windload performance to joined combinations of Andersen® windows and patio doors. They do not take the place of structural components in a building. Failure to provide adequate structural support could lead to window and door performance problems, product failure or installation failure.

• Window units joined over patio doors must span width of door and window side jambs must be aligned over door side jambs. This may result in water leakage and lack of structural support.

VERIFY YOUR SELECTION• Andersen offers several choices in joining materials. Whether or not to use reinforcement in a window

combination is dependent on the combination size and the design load requirement. The combination size is based on the geometry and area of the combination in question. Design load is based on several factors: wind speed, location, orientation, elevation, and others. Consult local building codes for determining the design load requirement for your installation. Determination of the design load is the sole responsibility of the architect, building owner, contractor and/or consumer.

• Proper joining material selection for Andersen windows and patio doors is essential if the benefits of experienced window design and engineering, quality materials and skilled workmanship are to be fully attained.

• Since every installation is different, these joining material selection, assembly and installation instructions are guidelines only. Andersen strongly recommends consultation with the local Andersen supplier or an experienced contractor, architect, or structural engineer prior to the installation of any Andersen product.

Metal fasteners and components could corrode when exposed to preservative-treated or fire-retardant treated lumber. Use approved fasteners and components to fasten window or door. Failure to do so could cause a failure resulting in injury, product or property damage.

1. Prepare Units• Position units on a workbench or floor with the unit's

exterior facing up. • Remove all packaging materials.• Identify locations for Steel Reinforced Mullion/Transom

joins. All joins not requiring Steel Reinforced Joining material should use standard non-reinforced joining materials. Non-reinforced joins should be assembled first.

• For Half Circle Units, cut and remove Installation Flanges on jambs being assembled with the Steel Reinforced Joining Strip. (figure 1).

• For Flexiframe or Double-Hung Units, remove Installation Flanges on jambs to be assembled with the Steel Reinforced Joining Strip (figure 2a). Cut corners of attached Installation Flange at a 45˚ angle (figure 2b).

• Flip units over so the exterior side is down.

figure 1

figure 2a• Installation Flanges should overlap one another at

the ends of the horizontal/vertical joins.• DO NOT apply non-reinforced mullion/transom

Gusset Plates on jambs adjacent to the steel mullion/transom joint for vertically joined combinations.

2. Cut and Install Steel Reinforced Joining Strip• Cut Steel Reinforced Joining Strip 1/4" shorter than the

length of the jamb for the unit, or combination of units, to be joined with the Steel Reinforced Joining Strip. Cutting can be accomplished using any standard metal cutting method (hacksaw, reciprocating saw, band saw, circular saw with metal cutting blade).

Tape Measure

Treat cut ends and drilled holes on Steel Reinforced Joining Strip with a quality rust inhibiting primer. Failure to do so may cause corrosion and potential structural failure resulting in injury, product and/or property damage.

The following steps require the 1-5/8" screw pack (Pack #RMWHE or #RMTTE).

• Place all units exterior side up. Rest the Steel Reinforced Joining Strip's edge on the surface of the bench or floor with the scribe marks down and position against the Double-Hung unit Head Jamb with scribed edge of the steel flush to inside surface of the unit. Attach joining strip with a minimum of two #8 x 7/8" screws per unit through the “D” shaped holes.

• If joining above Tilt-Wash Picture Window, remove Side and Head Jamb Liners.

• If joining above Woodwright Picture or Transom window, remove interior wood filler piece.

• Using the Steel Reinforced Joining Strip as a template, predrill the screw holes using a 1/8" drill bit through slotted holes (approximately 2-1/8" from interior edge). Drill holes completely through the Head Jamb at the center. If joining above Picture Window or Transom, predrill at exterior edge of the center hole.

• Apply a 3/16" bead of sealant along both inside corners of the Wide Exterior Trim Strip. Attach the short legs of the Wide Exterior Trim Strip into the flange kerf of the joined side outer frame member. Remove excess sealant from the joined outer frame members. Hold exterior trim strip tight to head outer frame member, and position appropriate Head Jamb Filler Piece.

• Center the Double-Hung Half Circle unit over unit to be joined and clamp together securely. Fasten with #10 x 1-5/8" screws through the predrilled holes through the Head Jamb.

• Continue to Step 6.

Follow diagrams at right to determine which holes on Gusset Plate to fasten screws into. Fastening screws into incorrect holes may cause product damage.

For all steel reinforced joins, two V-Notch Gusset Plates are required. Vertical join requires one at head and one at sill end of each join. Horizontal join requires one at the left jamb and one at the right jamb at the join.
