Allen GinsbergDiscusses J. EdgarHoover, the Fall of

he Soviet Union,he Drug War and

Teaching Poetry

AN INTERVIEW

Q: What do think is the lesson to be learned

y the relatively sudden disappearance of theold War?A: First of all, everything changes fast in mod

rn, accelerated, hyper-technological life.apitalism certainly is not the answer to socialconstruction in either the east or west becauses wrecked the planet, actually. So that doesn'telp. The capitalist solution is not a solutionther. It hasn't done the eastern Europeans anyood.

Although Tito and others were blamed for being

yrannical, maybe they may have killed less peoplehan are being killed in the internecine and chaunistic and nationalistic wars within their empires

ow. That doesn't excuse their dictatorships, but itmakes the pressure more understandable. Thathe senseless, sick ideas that the Readers' Digestr anybody else had about Communists didn't

make sense. That the CIA was incompetent. Thathe FBI was incompetent and corrupt and tied upith the mafia and so was incapable of dealingith real subversion. That everybody was wrong, ast and west, on both sides of the Iron Curtain

nd that the accelerated demise of the Russianmpire bankrupted the United States too, so itidn't do us any good. And that the Russians areally weird, all the way around.

The other element of it is that the American leftas been in left field all along and has not beenery clear about what socialism is actually. They'reill not very clear, the left, I think, is still probablyonfused about Cuba. What they should do is findome place for Castro to go, so that he'd be safend they could make a change. I think the realroblem is that we've been so bent that Castro

can't leave because he has nowhere to go and willget killed. I haven't seen anybody discussing thataspect, that the way to resolve the problems, as wedid with the Shah and as we did for the butcher inHaiti. Why not give him some place to refuge? Thatmaybe would resolve the problem of authoritarianism in Cuba. Obviously, he can't leave. It's not safefor him to leave. He's got to maintain his power. Idon't know why nobody discusses that. It's liketotal amnesia on a subject that's totally obvious.Maybe because all those Cuban refugee politiciansin Miami want to kill him. That's no way to resolvethe problem. They don't deserve that much anywaybecause they ran Cuba down into the ground withnarcotics before Castro came in.

9: Do you think there are appropriate causes for political activism today?

A; Of course there are! The ecological situation.I think the left should learn to meditate, as I havebeen saying for abouttwenty years. Expansionof consciousness and the

use of psyc hede lic s assort of little trips aboveand beyond meditation,

just to look at the map.How to dig the planet outof the whole that we're in.Deforestation and desertification and the loss of relation to the ground andthe loss of the family farmand all that. Those aremajor things to do.

There's the problem of ourhaving backed up the military death squads andpolice states in a number of countries. Finallywe've got a president who wants to get rid of thedictatorship in Haiti, and in today's Times he says,"Well, we can always send in the military. We'vealways got that option". So we've allowed thewreckage of Haiti and the death squads of Salvador and similar death squads in Quatemalaand Honduras. There's the War on Drugs thatneeds to be straightened out by legalizing grassand providing maintenance for junkies who dealwith the Reagan drugs like cocaine. In America weput more people in prison than any other countryand most of them are black and sixty percent arerelated to junk. I would classify those as politicalprisoners because they're in jai l because of awrong-headed political policy on drugs which theexperts know is wrong-headed. It's not solving theproblem. So the question of taking the twelve billion dollars a year that we give to the narcoticsbureaus who are pedaling drugs, and put it towardrehabilitation. Many Betty Ford clinics all over theplace. How to get off fossil fuel addiction, speakingof drugs. How to get to clean energy. Those are thethings that the left should be involved with.

Q: Why do you think there seems to bearound the country an interest in poetry?

A: Because after so much public manipulationof propaganda and hype from the White House andMadison Avenue, the candid representation of private mind is more and more valuable as a touchstone of what's of value. Most public language hasbeen manipulated if not predatory, which is thereason for

thatwhole philosophy of deconstruction

in language poetry. Burroughs started it in a way,but it was started before Burroughs even. Basicsemantic examination of reference, of all theseabstractions that the government uses. So you

have the minute, particulardetails of real life coming frompoets, it's a lot more valuable,a lot more information thawhat you can find in theTimes.

People are enthusiasticabout having some real communication, when, particularly under the Reagan and Bushyears, communication is totally blockaded deliberately, causing a kind of nationalschizophrenia. Language wasused for manipulation ratherthan communication, rather

than actual communication with people. It hadthis kind of predatory aspect to it.

Q: What is the main thing you hope to convey to your students?

A: Teaching poetry. Right now I'm in BrooklynCollege teaching a course in beginner's Blake andthe history of poetry. Historical Poetics. A lot of theMFA graduate students have never read Shelley's"Ode To The West Winds" or have never readSappho or don't know anything about the quanti

tative verse that Pound spoke of or standard thingsthat I took for granted like "Ode To IntellectualBeauty" by Shelley or Keats' Odes or WilliamCarlos Williams.

At Naropa Institute, at the Jack KerouacSchool of Disembodied Poetics, we emphasize thahistorical background plus the modernist background of post-Olson, Kerouac, spontaneous writing, relating that to meditative awareness of themind, meditative scoping the mind itself.

Poetry is considered in the Tibetan and

Japanese tradition as a form of dharma communication. It's also a form of mental discipline orordering your thoughts and being aware of thenature of your mind and the sequence of thethought forms as they pass through your head, thetexture of your consciousness, the differencebetween language and the thing that language represents. So some teachers, especially my old teacher Chogyam Trungpa, a Tibetan Lama, thoughtthat poetry was a form of practice, meditative practice, and related to it as he related to archery, flower arranging, tea ceremony, sitting practice, visual

ization and other techniques. I guess you can bopage 2 please note our new address: Steamshovel Press, POB 23715, St. Louis, MO 6312

down to you have to become familiar with yourwn mind and non-attached to your own thoughts.ooking at yourself and your thoughts objectively,om the outside and not contained within yourwn projections, which is a point in meditation,o. You don't get entangled in your own projec

ons.Q: What do you think of the supposed resur

ence in LSD use among high school students?A: You're talking about also a resurgence of

terest also in the 60s and the Beat generation litature. They seem part of the same thing, feedingf each other. But I think there isn't so much of asurgence as that people are acknowledginghat's been going on all along. As far as I know, oing around colleges and seeing a lot of highhool kids over the last twenty years, there's

ever been a lack of granny wisdom in the use of ugs. People were just less overt about it. There'sways been acid around. Many more people takg it than are publicly acknowledged.

Q: Whenever you hear a new report likeat, I always get suspicious that there's goingbe some kind of crackdown coming.

A: Yeah. But also there will probably be morepen talk about it now that the neo-conservativeovernment has fallen and that J. Edgar Hooveras been demystified. His secrets are out. So theuthoritarian aspect of the American police state is

little bit more out in the open. The drug policy isbviously a great failure. The War of Drugs wasypocrisy and everybody knows that Bush andoriega were dealing drugs together anyway. So Iink it's Just a disillusionment and deconstruc-on, disillusionment in the authority of the govnment on drugs, deconstruction of that authority

nd re-evaluation of what could be said in publicnd what couldn't be.

Q: So you think the new Cli nton-Goredministration is going to take charge and lib

alize drug laws?A: I don't think so. No. Just like with the gay

ing; there are more basic economic issues theyave to deal with. One thing they might takeharge of, however, is shifting the twelve billionollar drug bureaucracy fund more in the direction

rehab and try to do something to decriminalizeass or at least get rid of the mandatory sentencg that we have in New York, I don't know if that'sderal, but to decriminalize grass to the extent of inging it back as a misdemeanor rather than alony. And promoting more medical attention toug problems, removing heroin from the police

and giving it to doctors to it figure out. That wouldleave the field more clear to examine what theReagan-Bush drugs, how to deal with them, thecocaine and crack. Also, I think that everybodyrealizes that the government has been dealing indrugs now from the Vietnam War heroin trade tothe CIA through the Contras dealing Bush andNoriega's manipulations of the drug trade to fundoff-the-shelf military operations. Then there's thecollapse of the whole myth of J. Edgar Hoover interms of police authority. So I think kids might bemore fresh, talk more fresh about it, with a freshmind.

Then there's also the consideration that nowpeople are slowly beginning to dig is that if twentyto forty thousand people a year die of illicit drugsin America, that's a small amount compared to theone hundred people who die of alcohol and the

four hundred thousand people—ten times asmuch, twenty times as much—that die of cigarettes. The real killer drug is the coffin nails, the licit drug, the agriculture of which is subsidized by the government. Jesse Helms, who setshimself up as the moral arbiter, is the one legislator who is the main lobbyist for that drugmonopoly. He's now trying to redo the Opium Warsin retro by trying to force bad trade deals withSoutheast Asia unless they accept our Marlboroads and products. American cigarettes. I don'tknow if people realize that. He's trying to force

Southeast Asian countries who are trying to prevent addiction to American tobacco, to open up. Sothat's a kind of interesting schizophrenic role forhim, being like the purveyor of killer drugs...

9:... the dealer.

A: The dealer and at the same time trying to sethimself up as an ethical, moral operator.

Q: And specifically in Southeast Asia wherea lot of the heroin traffic comes out of...

A: It's like the old Opium Wars where the

bashing China physically with guns to let us sellthem opium in exchange for silk or whatever theyhad.

Q: There's an effort now to get J. EdgarHoover's name removed from the J. EdgarHoover building.

A: I'm sure it will be soon.

Q: Do you think it's going to happen?

A: Of course, as people realize the consequences. It turns out that he was in cahoots withorganized crime. After a while people will begin torealize the enormous consequences of that. Itmeant that organized crime a foothold in Americathat it wouldn't have. Maybe that has a lot to dowith the drug plague, since organized crime dealtdrugs. It has a lot to do with the destruction of theleft in America since the labor unions were purgedby J. Edgar Hoover from the 20s to the 40s. Andwho came into the vacuum but organized crime?

That's why that since everybody's been saying"how come England has a labor party, France hasa socialist party, Italy has a communist party, every western nation has, Germany even, howcome we don't?" That's one of the reasons. Wehave the mob instead, displacing it, and we have

the CIA and the FBI dealing with the mob. Thevery police that are supposed to be controlling themob, Hoover's FBI, controlled by the mob by blackmail. It's enormous! They couldn't keep the J.Edgar Hoover building once people begin thinkingthis through or once somebody says so. All youneed really is the president to say this happened,

or somebody important to say it, to talk about it.Although I haven't seen anybody discussing

the consequences of J. Edgar Hoover being a closeted queen aside from the hee-haw, the joke thhe was a transvestite at times. He was the acmeand icon of the right-wing, sour puss sector of thepopulation and all of a sudden it turns out thatwas a complete hypocrite. But I haven't seen anybody discuss the social consequences. And I thinthat's really important. I haven't seen anybody discuss it even. What was the effect on American potics of his displacement of attack on organizedcrime to public enemy number one, thCommunis ts and left-wing labor unions anblacks and the sabotage of minority leadership? It's an enormous trauma to the country.

People on hand to ask questions of MrGinsberg included Susan Waugh, AndreMurray, Michael Castro and Kenn Thomas.

King Co-Opted;Abbie AssassinatedAn Interview with Dave Bellinger

BY KENN THOMAS

Q: We were talking about James Bevel andou were saying that you and the Reverendevel were the ones who actually first connced Martin Luther King to oppose the war?

A: We on the National Mobilization Committee, hich at the time was organizing the largest antiar demonstrations, decided that Martin, who aumber of us knew and had worked with, that

me was overdue for him to come out and really begainst the war. But he was under tremendousressure and he kept flirting with the idea duringhe time we were working with him. And I wouldave specific reports, sometimes from one of theher people on the staff and sometimes because Ias president, where somebody would come up tom and say, "Martin, if you march," except theyalled him Dr. King, that kind of person, "Dr. King,

you march in that demonstration next week orwo weeks from now", whatever it would be at theme, "I have a check In my pocket here, or in my

and, for $20,000 that I was going to give you butl have to tear up or I can't give it to you." So heas under pressure that way.

Some of it came from very good intentions, amely that if he opposed his country when it was

war and added what seemed to some people, orould seem to some people, an unpatriotic eleent to the struggle for civil rights, that it wouldurt the black people. It would hurt the cause of vil rights. But at the same time, in the mobilizaon that was putting on these demonstrations, wead people who were complaining that we had tooany black speakers speaking about their probms and denial of justice. And we always used toave a Puerto Rican, not always the same one, butome Puerto Rican who would talk about the needor independence and cultural autonomy for hisountry instead of using its land as a bombingnge and so forth.

And at the same time, King once postponed, ter he promised that he would take part, then herote, well, actually in that case, he wrote thatnless we took off the name of Arnold Johnson,

ho was a known Communist, from our letterhead

or from our list of signers and sponsors, that hewouldn't be able to do it. We had a terrible struggleover that before some of us could get the agreement of the rest of the board that we had to standon principle. In that case it was non-exclusion.

Anyway, right around that time, Otto Nathan, who was a beloved friend of Albert Einstein, andwas executor of his estate, was treasurer of ourorganization and he resigned because we wouldn'tagree to limit the number of black speakers and onissues other than just the war in Vietnam.

9 : Are you saying that King delayed hisopposition to the war based on money considerations?

A: Well, that was one of the pressures put onhim. But also he was attacked. When he finallyannounced publicly, as he had told us earlier, when he finally announced that he was going totake part, he was attacked by the NAACP, byRalph Bunche at the UN. Ralph Bunche was the

most measured of them. He was the one who said

that Dr. King must choose between anti-war andcivil rights, he can't do both. And I'd have to saythat it would be unfair to say that King waveredbecause of financial conditions, but that was one

of the pressures that was put on him. I certainlywould say—without hesitation—say that a numberof his staff, whom I knew and who were not gradually becoming radicalized as King was, a number of them were severely influenced by the financial conditions and tried to get him based on them torefuse.

One of the things that I have done in this book,From Yale To Jail, I actually have three chapters onKing in which I try to show King to be a personwho was thrust into prominence before he wasready for it. During this period, when he wasdebating internally and also debating with his staff and a lot of his other backers about whether totake a strong stand against the war or not, he waschanging his views, or developing his views, untilhe became so dangerous that he had to be killed.I've gathered together a few of the statements thathe made during the last year and a half of his life, during that period, and here's one from the book (reads):

For years J labored with the idea of reforming the existing institutions, a

little change here, a little change there. Now I feel quite differently. I think you've got to have a reconstruction of the entire society, a revolution of values.

We can't have a system where some people live in superfluous, inordinatewealth while others live in abject, deadening poverty. From now on our move

ment must take on basic class issues between the privileged and the under privileged.

page 6

There are more, but I think that those two indicate the development that was happening.Actually, I believe that both of those were saidshortly after he made the step of marching withus. A short while earlier, the same month, givingtalk at Riverside Ch'arch in New York, in which hecame out with a much stronger position not only

on the war but on the American society. When Martin Luther King did decide to take

militant stand against the war, and you askedwhether he was deterred previously for financialreasons, we got word...the head of the New Yopolice intelligence division came to me a few daysbefore King was to appear on the platform and toldme that the mob had a contract on King's life. Ansomebody went to his office, I think to Andy Younin Atlanta, from their department, and told himthe same thing. And it did come out some bit laterby the Assassination Committee in Congress thathere was this actual thing, but it was by the mob.But that doesn't mean that the same people whoused the mob to try to assassinate Castro, thasome of them didn't also use it against King.

Q: When Abbie Hoffman died, in the pressreports you were among the people who weresuggesting it may have been more than just asuicide. Do you still believe that and why?

A: I never took a stand saying that he had denitely been assassinated. But I could spend awhole hour talking with you about that, how the

coroner lied to Abbie's woman friend and to hisoldest son Andrew. Andrew Hoffman came to everyone of my events for three days in Boston on thbook tour. He is absolutely convinced that hfather was assassinated. He tells me that when hesaw his father's body, lying there dead, that he habruises on his face and that he had his fistsclenched as if he had been resisting somebody. But meanwhile the coroner told him and the otherfamily members present that Abbie had died of aheart attack, There was no sign of drugs or alcoholor violence. And Andrew wanted the body not cremated immediately, but it was cremated immediately. And after the body was disposed of, then tcoroner switched his story and said that he'd beentaking phenobarbital and alcohol.

And the other thing is that the newspaper stories and others who either were mislead or didn'twant the thing dragged out, it was so painful forthem anyway, let out that Abbie was discouragedbecause the youth weren't coming along and flowing his way of life and his thing and so forth.Abbie used to call me up every week or two, some

times twice a week and sometimes it would be

e or four weeks between them, but during thatle last year of his life, it was a pattern and iteased during that period. And he was verymistic. And I have a letter from him, whiche about five weeks before his assassination orh from other things, whichever it was, inch he says, "Everywhere I go I meet more peofor social change than at any other time in my

I could go on forever, but one final thing on: I was in a program down in Champaign-ana, Illinois, where they bring in people off theen path, who haven't fallen into the...I don'tw, "normal" thing, ruts of society or whatevI never can remember the exact words...andbring somebody in for two or three weeks to

d seminars, meet informally with the students,to classes, work with them on various activities.en I was there I worked with the Take Back theht march for women that I spoke at and particid in and so forth. And when they asked me onsecond visit there who I would suggest to comeeptember, I suggested Abbie. I gave them thene number, they called him up and he agreedome. Now he would have come in September.died, by whatever method, in April. And the

ond phone conversation with him, you know,ng into details, he says, in his inimitable way,

sure you want me? Because if I come theregonna be no more CIA on campus!" Don't for

that he and Amy Carter had already launchedt-in along with local students, en masse, andn a court battle on this. So there were plenty of ons for somebody to get rid of him, and I've

touched on it. And there's a lot of evidencethat is what happened. But I know how easy

s to think that everything is a conspiracy andto examine all the evidence.

Let me just say in conclusion that I found thatdrew, his oldest son, at his request, he and Iked together, from what he told me and othergs, I got a coroner in Pittsburgh who had

yed an important role in some criminal cases byving that the coroner's report was inaccurate, gree that if he got the material which was used

supposedly used for, tire coroner's verdict, hed tell whether it was Abbie's or not, which waskind of thing he could do, and secondly hed tell whether it was true or not. But the coro

refused to release the material without a courte. And some of those dearest to Abbie, includ-

Made In JapanThe (Li teral ly)Sickening Secretthat Started theU.S. B i o w a rProg ram

BY JONATHAN VANKIN

No one can be certain what genius first realizedthat disease could be turned from an uncontrollable killer to a weapon. Maybe some 14th centuryTartar. The one who got the bright idea, as hewatched his comrades dropping from plague during their three-year siege of a Genoan-occupiedBlack Sea burg called Caffa, to catapult cadaversover the city walls.

Nice move, if a little shortsighted. The Genoansfled the city all right. Then they dispersed, bacillus-ridden, throughout Europe.

Or perhaps it was whichever German surmisedthat anthrax might do quite nicely in cutting downEurope's livestock supply during World War I. Itreally doesn't matter who thought of it first. Thefact is, biowar got its biggest boost from exactly theeffort designed to curtail it: the 1925 GenevaConvention.

On June 17 most of the global powers at theconvention affixed their stamps to a protocol banning the use of biological weapons. There were twoimportant abstainees. The United States didn'tsign, which was slightly curious because at that

point America showed little interest in developinggerm weapons. The other no-show was a different story. With

the impetus of an ambitious and, in a twisted way, visionary young military doctor named Shiro Ishii,Japan became infatuated with dreams of infectingits enemi es. A decade later Japan occupiedManchuria and Ishii commanded his very ownbiowar empire, replete with the Emperor's seal.

The sprawling operation centered to a remoteManchu rian town calle d Pingfan and waseuphemistically named the "Anti-Epidemic WaterSupply Unit", Unit 731, now better known as the

Ishii Corps.Unit 731's research methods were scientifically

sloppy and ethically, well, not quite right. Theitest subjects were humans: Koreans, Chinese andRussians at first. Then after Japan went to wwith the West, American, British and Australianprisoners found themselves marched, shipped and

hauled to an encampruent near the farawaManchurian city of Mukden. There, they were metby a masked welcoming committee of medical personnel who greeted them by spraying some indeterminate liquid in their faces, ramming glasprobes to their rectums and injecting them withmysterious serum.

Many of the soldiers, unsurprisingly, died. Btheir bodies were not disposed of according toorthodox disease-control techniques. To say theleast. The creepy team of scientists came back andissected the corpses.

These practices were a matter of routineIshii's Unit 731, whose vast kingdom of disease is

thought to have traversed much of eastern AsThe lab at Pingfan, alone, held germ factories thbred eight tons of toxins per month. It also contained an impressive flea farm, useful for vectoringIshii's personal favorite malady, bubonic plague.Ishii's unit pelted several Chines cities with "fleabombs", igniting outbursts of plague.

Unit 731 infected thousands of human beingAmerican and British POWs among them, withplague, tetanus, anthrax, botulism, meningitistuberculosis and a potpourri of similar noxiousconcoctions. ere "tested" by being compelled to run lapsound the camp until they dropped from exhauson. Men were made to stand naked in 40-beloweather until their limbs froze, ostensibly to studye effects of disease in cold climates. The detailsen't really Important.

At least, not to the United States Warepartment and General Douglas MacArthur. Inhii and his files, the military brass realized, theyd a motherlode of data which the U.S. couldver develop on its own due to—as two Americanowarfare researchers eloquently put it uponurning from interviews with Ishii and his under

ngs in Tokyo—"scruples attached to humanperimentation".

Taking a unique approach topporting our boys in the fieldacArthur suggested a dealhich would allow Ishii ande rest of Unit 731's madientists immunity fromar-crimes prosecution if theyould Just share their testsults with American researchers

arrangement which suited Ishii justne. Only the state department objected, onounds that later revelation of the deal mighteriously embarrass" the U.S. government.

Ishii slipped into reclusive retirement devoted, cording to his daughter, to religious study—

ough rumors ran rampant that he made repeatvisits to Korea helping the U. S. mount aowarfare campaign there. Dr. Murray Sanders,e military physician who finally blew the whistle

n the secret deal, believed that Ishii gave lecturesFort Derrick, Maryland, where American scients after the war immersed themselves in apersecret germ weapons project.

Many of Ishii's top associates went on to illusous and rewarding careers with Japanese unirsities, corporations and the government. The

octor who oversaw the cold-weather experimentsuck lucrative deals with commercial fisheries as"freezing specialist". His contribution to the

ozen fish industry can only be guessed at. -The extensive unpleasantness that was Unit

31 remains one of World War II's more obscurerge-scale crimes against humanity, thanks to thealescence of the U. S. government's tediouslyrsistent cover-up reflex and Japan's alwaystriguing compulsion to transform reality, if notvent it altogether.

The nation makes quite a case study in appliedhenomenology—if a Tokyo graduate student ine early '80s hadn't stumbled across a shred of

Ishii's scant remaining paper trail (medical recordsof patient's diseases from Inception to ineluctabledeath) the good doctor 's massive and macabreinfrastructure of pestilence may as well have neverexisted, as far as the Japanese public would know. They sure don't men tion it in the Educa tionMinistry-cleansed high school history texts.

But it seems Ishii's empire extended intoTokyo, where thing become a little tougher to conceal, seeing as how there's 15 million people there.Last year, a construction crew hit on a chock-fullstash of human remains beneath the pavement of Shinjuku, Tokyo's H. G. Wellsian redevelopment

zone. The word around town has it that thebones came from Unit 731 concentra

tion camps, shipped to Tokyo forfurther "study".

In August of 1993 severalChinese families, who think that bones of family membersmay be among the ghoulish

heap, began demanding thatJapan identify the skeletons. So

far the government's approach tothe unusual archaeological find has been

ho-hum, neglecting to acknowledge where thebones came from or run any tests.

Several Mukden survivors—who years later stillsuffered from unexplained outbreaks of fever andillness—tried to pry the truth from their own recal

citrant governments. AsTate as 1987, British andAmerican Mukden vets were told "no evidence"existed that Allied prisoners were victimized byIshii's brand of scientific inquiry. In fact such evidence existed for more than forty years and wasknown to MacArthur when he conceived the secretdeal.

It was through this covert pact, and the subsequent conspiracy to cover it up within the U. S.and British governments, that Shiro Ishii becamethe father of modern biological weapons. The U. S.biowarfare program was lackadaisical until 1942,when Chang Kai-shek wrote a letter to WinstonChurchill, filling him in on Ishii's machinations. The British had their own, quite minor researcheffort going and the U. S. joined in. A year later, the Americans got their own project off the groundat a place called Camp—later Fort—Detrick.

The quest for the "biological bomb" was conducted under the same air of paranoid self-importance as its atomic counterpart. But unlike theManhattan Project, which drew leading physicistsof the day, biowarfare research repulsed thenation's top bio log ists who reco iled from theendeavor. Those darn scruples again.

The government announced the biowarfareproject in 1946, but the public's horrified responseprompted the Army Chief of Staff DwightEisenhower to slap a three year gag order on theproject—broken only by Defense Secretary JamesForrestal's 1949 debunking of public concerns as"unduly spectacular".

In the meantime Fort Detrick, now largely anoutpost of the CIA, plugged away at such unspectacular enterprises as the search for toxins thatcould disguise assassinations as natural deathsand other spooky schemes that have since becomethe stuff of spy-buff legend.

U. S. researchers did test toxins on humans, albeit volunteers. Prison inmates and, weirdly.Seventh Day Adventists lined up to get shot upwith psittacosis, equine encephalitis andtularemia.

But it still wasn't enough. One of the biggestproblems in deploying biological weapons is somehow insuring that— oops! —the germs don't blowback in your own army's face. To check how germclouds drifted under actual weather conditions, the military started dousing American cities withbacteria.

A 1950 "attack" on San Francisco, in which aNavy minesweeper spewed rare Serratia bacteriaall over the City By The Bay, sent 11 people to thehospital. One died. Researchers also unleashedtoxins into the Pentagon air conditioning system

and the New York subways.A lawsuit against the government by the SanFrancisco victim's family revealed 300 "open air"germ tests between 1950 and 1969. In 1972 the U.S. government officially renounced the development and use of biological weapons.

Even so, secret germ tests continue, thoughoften under the aegis of universities and privateresearch institutes. Today's experiments have anominous twist—genetic engineering. In 1986 theWistar Institute, a venerable research facility inPhiladelphia, infected Argentinean cattle with

genetically altered rabies virus, catchingArgentinean cattle ranchers completely by surprise!Boy, did those guys feel silly.

Meanwhile, the University of Oregon embarkedon similar hijinks in New Zealand.

And don't forget the military, who find the biology business hard to quit. Despite the 1972 ban,the Defense Department was allowed to cloneShiga toxin gene. Shiga toxin causes dysentery. The military, public spirited as ever, asserted thatit merely sought a vaccine against the terminallyrunny affliction. But if the history of germ warfareresearch proves anything, it's that in the whacky

page 10

world of infectious disease, defense and offense areoften interchangeable.

The ominous epilogue, or perhaps epitaph, tothis unfortunate account is spelled AIDS. The thesis that this fin de Steele epidemic sprang frobiowarfare genetic experiments, perhaps on pupose, is all-too-familiar to readers of this publica

tion. Needless to add, there's nothing on the recordto confirm it.

But then there was "no evidence" thAmerican prisoners were subjects of Ishii's humaexperiments either.

WhileQuigley is better known to most conspiracy buffs, the Yates will launch you—in academic, heavilyfootnoted fashion—into the midst of the HighWeirdness from which many of the conspiratorialplans of the current age were spawned. "Europe Calling!Pound Speaking!"BY ADAM GORIGHTLY

Who remembers Ezra Pound? Once the enfant terrible of American poets and driving force behindthe European expatriate intelligentsia movementback in the Teens, Twenties and Thirties when hehelped discover himself, and Episcopal transcen-dentalist T. S. Eliot among others, restoring vigorand vitality to what was at that time the dyinglife/artform of poetry at a juncture when it drastically needed Muse to mouth resuscitation.

I first heard about our crazy Uncle Ezra in the

book Allen Verbatim by another distinguished loonof American letters, Allen Ginsberg, that acid-gobbling/vision seeking hippie beatnik, hare krishnachanting and oft times over-indulgent cosmicgenius bard with commie and homosexual leanings. Back in the late great Sixties—when drugswere good and communicable diseases could betreated by a simple trip to your local pharmacy—Ginsberg paid a visit to our dear Uncle Ez somewhere In Italy methinks to sit at the feet of theGreat Master and bless him for his good works andvitriolic rantings. There like a Tibetan holy guy

Ezra sat in near total silence as Ginsberg fawnedall over him, blathering beatitudes. Old Ez simplynodded his white-haired head from time to timewhile rubbing his knuckles raw with his aged andwrinkled hands. When pressed for specific answersconcerning his poetry Ezra replied It was all pointless rubbish and a failed waste of time.

Ezra's—by all accounts—was a troubled life, though not without it's interesting moments, tosay the least. By the Thirties he was a well-renowned master of his art, but inevitably his preoccupations began to lead his poetic meanderingsinto uncharted waters in the brain. "Social Credit'became his new passion around that time, an economic philosophy that turned into an obsessionwith him, becoming one of the driving forces in hislife, eventually leading Ezra down the path of fascism. A path that ended tragically in an insaneasylum for the psychologically treasonous at St.Elizabeth's Mental Hospital, in the District of Columbia, where he was finally released aftertwelve years of forced imprisonment.

Leading up to and throughout World War II,

Dr. Pound felt passionately that the leaders of his

native homeland, the ol' US of A, had betrayedtheir peoples with a monetary system that mathe rich richer and the poor lesser, and in the process had masticated the Constitution into castraed confetti. The system, he felt, had been manipulated by rich Jewish bankers and greed mongeringarms dealers whom Ezra referred to as the

'usurers'."I ask you WHY WAS CHRIST CRUCIFIED?was crucified for trying to bust a racket," spokeEzra to The American Hour microphone of which hebabbled unto in his folksy and sardonic tongueand cheek manner, in the comic role of a cracker

barrel philosopher with an exaggerated Yankeeaccent. It was the summer of '42 and Ezra wasnow under the delusion that a document calledThe Protocols of the Elders of Zton was the finaltruth and testament revealing the fact of a JewishConspiracy controlling mankind. much of an audience, and if he had anyway, vfew would have been able to decipher his loonydiscourses that mixed a hodge-podge of literarycriticism with economic theories and anti-Semiticconspiracies, praising II Duce's 'fascist experiment"as all the while he vehemently chastised FDR forselling America down the river. He liked to refer toRoosevelt's New Deal as "The New Steal".

Inevitably all these radio airwave rantings ledEzra near the War's end to be indicted by the U.S.for treason on propaganda charges, though Ezradenied up to the very end of his life that he waever ins tructed on what to say by A

re The Cantos, a continuing body of work thated his poetic growth and recorded his passions

believed to be the root of all earthly evil. Duringthe administration of Alexander Hamilton is whenthis detested practice first reared its ugly head inAmerica. Hamilton turned the control of moneyfrom government to the manipulative hands of bankers. Banks at this time were able to lend outtwenty times as much money as they actually heldin gold reserves, thereby collecting credit on loansthat were imaginary to begin with; a hallucinatoryprocess manipulated by these economic hypnotists, the Usurers.

He first wrote of usura in the following sectionof The Cantos:

"With usura hath no man a house of goodstone

each block cut smooth and well fittingthat design might cover their face,

with usurahath no man a painted paradise on hischurch wall

harpes et luzor where virgin receiveth messageand halo projects from incision, with usuraseeth no man Gonzaga his heirs and concu

This poem speaks of the quality of life beingcheapened by usura, as in the art of the painterwhere "the line grows thick'. Where once the painted line was delicate, now it is painted quickly forthe fast buck, without attention to aesthetic detail, thusly prostituting humanity for a fast fuck.

To quote once again Ginsberg from AllenVerbatim explaining Ezra's Usura theory: "This

whole usura thing is a summary of his general economic theories and his attack on banks and theabuse of money, an attack which probably makescomplete sense to you in other terms—like anybody building a university dormitory in order tomake money out of it obviously is going to skimp, and "with usura the walls grow thin, with usurathe ceilings grow lower'", as quoted his personalProspero/Pound from another part of The Cantos. In another of The Cantos written around the timeof his memorable Italian broadcasts, Ezra cuts tothe chase. This piece of inflammatory poesy wasfor years unpublished and only until recent yearsdid his heirs see fit to release It to the general public:

"As soon as one begins to remember this shitwar,/certain facts will rise to the surface again. Inthe beginning, God/the great aesthete, after creating heaven and earth,/after the fiery sunset, afterhaving pai nte d/t he rocks with lichen like aJapanese print,/Shat the great usurer Satan-Geryon, prototype/of the masters of Churchill.'

A true master of language, yet at the same timea wee bit mentally deranged makes for one of themost interesting poetical talents In the annals of the planet. Pound was a man of deep convictionsabove all else, albeit he was crazy as a coot. Inlater years, when treason charges against himwere dropped and he was released from St.Elisabeths, the wisdom of years made Pound regretcertain things he had said and writ, and some of the extreme positions he had taken. Pound admitted to Ginsberg during their historic meeting inRapallo that his "greatest stupidity was stupidsuburban anti-Semitic prejudice".

But maybe Ol' Ezra wasn't as crazy as at firstwe surmised. Maybe just a wee bit confused but onthe right track. In a short intro to The Protocols inBill Cooper's aforementioned book, Behold A Pale

Horse, Mr. Cooper shares his belief that in TheProtocols where it mentions "The Jews" the document is, in reality, referring to the Illuminati. Wasthis another instance as in the annals of theKennedy assassination when certain facts areserved on a shining platter with an ounce of happyhorseshit thrown in extra to obsfucate the big picture to throw the Searchers of Truth momentarily

off track chasing tangent spectres and wasting

precious time?Maybe this is what happened to Ezra, who

many agree was never really crazy at all but jusanother political prisoner, a dedicated artist whrefused to toe the line and was punished for thefolly of being too true to himself in his attemptseducate his fellow men.

BY VLADIMIR TERZISKIIn my research as a physicist I have gathered a

Being fluent in Japanese, Russian, rman and English on top of my nativelgarian, and being able to read professional litture in several other languages has helped memendously in my research and my efforts tonetrate the veil of secrecy around this blacklist

advanced technology. As a rule, I do not discardy bizarre story when I hear it—I will simply postIn the big mental picture of such posted mesges, until there is a second similar story, and so

In my public lectures on the West Coast I haveced with an extensive slide presentation of doc

mentary evidence the general physical charactercs and theoretical arguments of antigravity ando propulsion through academic and tabloidurces; through modern UFO lore and ancientyths and legends, and again through some modn day revela tions ; through science fictionurces and contactee reports. The unexpectednclusion was that antigravity is extremely easyproduce with any advanced "alien" or Sci-Fi

rdware: simple rotation decreases the weight of pinning body, and if you spin vthe hell out of it',will lift off and fly away. Antigravity as a physicalriable is proportional to the rotational inertialmentum of the spinning body and to the anguvelocity (in more colloquial terms, to the prodof the mass and the rotational velocity of the

nning body).

Armed with this simple theory I was able toeven answer the question of how to build a betterflying saucer. From the slow spinning of "brute"heavy masses to the relativistic spinning of highfrequency fine energy fields with very little massaround the stationary hull of the craft—this Is theroad towards the design of a solid state antigravitydrive without moving parts.

The fact the antigravity is very easy to producewith the available hardware of our crude (byextraterrestrial standards) technological era is nosurprise at all, keeping in mind the similarly easyto produce (hardware-wise) technologies from otherblacklisted (for mass consumption) by the terrestrial secret societies fields of R&D, like free energy, alternative cures for AIDS and cancer, environ

mental cleaning technologies, etc., etc. Anyonewho has studied extensively metaphysics andparanormology knows that the higher the masteryof the universal laws, the simpler the hardware toachieve the same technological goals becomes. Themore advanced races in the universe achieve allour science fiction goals with the power of extremely small gadgets, and finally, with the power of their minds alone.

The blacklisting of an advanced space flightpropulsion technology that is more than 100 yearsahead of its time is not a very startling findingkeeping in mind that this Is the very mode of operation of the terrest rial secret power eli te, theevilarchy that rules the planet from behind thescenes: how they usurp, hoard and lock behindtriple vault doors the most advanced technologiesthat appear on the planet, until they make surethat all the patents are in their possession, andthat the new technology will not undermine thealready existing technologies, for which they alsoown the key patents and rights.

by U-boat oxygen-independent Walter gas turbinesrunning on kerosene and hydrogen peroxide, thatwere designed for prolonged exoatmospheric interplanetary flights. My firm belief is that a rocket-spun 60-150 feet diameter craft was capable of

going to the Moon on a truckload of kerosene anda truckload of liquid oxygen, due to the two magical keys to the saucer kingdom: the total negationof both gravitational and inertlal masses, when theantigravity drive starts spinning.

Two months ago I was arrested and handcuffedby Pasadena and Caltech police for showing fourpanels with the first and very detailed and close-upphotos in this country of low-flying Germansaucer-shaped craft over the testing grounds inGermany, and for demanding some perestroikaand glasnost in the US space program, this happened after a lecture by Apollo-17 astronaut andex-senator Harrison Schmidt in the centralBeckman auditorium at the California Institute of Technology, the citadel of the party line in US science, the lecture was on the planned 21st centuryNASA flights to and colonization of Mars with theinefficient and gas-guzzling rocket technology of today.

After researching the German saucers foalmost a year on faith alone without much of solidevidence, (my faith only was strong because of myengineering intuition showing me the physical fea

sibility of these craft), suddenly several months agomy perseverance was rewarded when I receivedthrough private channels from Germany theunderground video documentary by the secretGerman society, the "Thule Gesellschaft" about themost advanced free energy saucers, powered byVictor Schauberger's free energy water turbines(the so-called trout turbines) and Hans Kohler'stachyon magneto-gravitic drives, the "Thule tachy-onators". Among them were shown in dozens of photographs of low level flights over the testingground the ten meter diameter interceptor-fighters

of the "Vril" series, 25 meter tank killers of the"Haunibu 1 & 2" types and the 74 meter"Haunlbu-3" dreadnought for antishipping warfare. Drawings of 300 feet diameter "Haunibu-4"interplanetary craft and of a cigar-shaped mother-ship battleship 330 feet long dating from 1943 hadalso been uncovered by the authors of the Germanfilm.

GERMAN SPACE FLIGHTS TO THE MOONDURING WW2 WITHOUT A DROP OF FUEL

That Germans had in WW2 saucers with nomoving parts, that could go to the Moon in onehour is not even the biggest secret in this wholefilm. It is much more important that they managedto do that without using a single drop of traditionalfuel for that purpose. The so-called free energydrives they were using were not perpetuum mobiledrives, to use the dangerous word of the physicscommunity, that were "producing" energy out of nothing, but converters of the practically inexhaustible for us gravitational energy of the Earth,Moon or other planetary bodies that these crafwere flying by, into the electromagnetic energy necessary to propel the craft In space.

The well-known (In the field of alternative energy research) Hans Kohler convertor was utilized toconvert the Inexhaustible gravitational energy of aplanetary body into the electromagnetic energy of the flight. The convertor was coupled to a Van deGraaf band generator and to a Marcony ball vortexdynamo in an electro-magneto-gravitic, or tachyondrive—the so-called Thule and Andromeda tachy-

onators, that were mass produced on assemblyplease note our new address: Steamshovel Press, POB 23715, St. Louis, MO 63121

Bovmut: The FBIand Cattle

MutilationsBY X . SHARKS DESPOT

The actual story of cattle mutilations and theFBI's story of cattle mutilations are two differentthings. It seems almost like a story of competingsubcults. The subcult of the FBI, the subcult of ranchers who own the dead cattle, and the subcultof various assorted conspiracy theories. And lost inhere somewhere is the actual story of cattle andother animal mutilations.

Talking about the beginnings of the cattlemutilation affair is difficult. It's more like talkingabout certain points when ideas seem to havecrystallized and then spread to other points.

On April 20, 1979, a conference was held atthe Albuquerque Public Library at Albuquerque,New Mexico. The conference was held after an outbreak of cattle mutilations in the area. At it,according to the FBI file, "TOMMY BLAND,Lewisyille, Texas" appeared along with otherspeakers and said, according to the FBI document,"...that animal mutilations date back to the early1800s in England and Scotland."

That is the earliest factual account of a beginning to the animal mutilations. The problem ishow do trace an idea? In the late 1980s house catsstarted showing up dead in the city of Tustin,California. The local animal control people decidedthat the cats had been attacked and killed by coyotes who were being driven into the city by con

struction. At least some residents insisted that thecats were being killed by gangs of Satanists. Thebad publicity forced one hundred necropsies to beperformed on the cats, seeming to prove factuallythat the cats were, in fact, chomped on by coyotes.Apparently, the vocal minority that started all of this was unconvinced. Inevitably, someone, so itmight as well be me, is going to compare this tomedieval witch panics. Animal sacrifice to an alienGod to bring about some sort of magic spell is apretty old idea. Arguably, concerned meetings wereheld in ancient Rome to discuss the meaning of acat found slaughtered one morning. Was it a reli

gious sacrifice? An attempt to work magic? So when books are published with accounts of

helicopters using Satanic cultists killing adraining the blood from cattle for their rituals, itisn't exactly a new idea.

I've read accounts of the sacrifice of animals inthe 1820s frontier New York in an attempt to makemagic which would detect buried treasure. It waspart of a folk-superstition at the time, pretty widspread, called "Money-digging", which was apparently dowsing for buried treasure. The animal sacrifice was just a minor offshoot of the more generalhabit of digging for buried treasure. The point isthat the idea that sacrifice would work in doinmagic will apparently occur to some persons

putting together freelance rituals. In 1984 seventeen year old Richard Kasso of Northport, NewYork, apparently practiced animal sacrifice withgroup of local youths called the Knights of the

Black Circle before committing a murder whichwas first reported to have Satanic overtones. It walater attributed to an argument over a drug rip-of

Having read about things like the panic ovSatanism in Tustin, California and the Knights of the Black Circle's home-made Satanism, I expectedthe FBI file on cattle mutilations to be full of sucaccounts. In fact, that isn't the case. The FBI cosistently bowed out of investigating cattle mutilations, being unwilling to enter into any investigation without a federal statute to back it up. It alsowanted an increase in funds earmarked specificaly for any such investigation. The FBI file stretcheonly from 1974 until 1980. Strange incidents took place both before and after that, but the FBIapparently never heard of them, or of it did, fithem away under a separate cover in its volumnous files.

One of the infuriating things about researchinto UFOs and cattle mutilations is the impossibilty of distinguishing between a belief system and anaccount that resembles it. In 1896 people all ovthe United States began seeing an "airship" moviacross the sky. When accounts were published of

page 20 p l e a s e n o t e o u r n e w a d d r e s s : S t e a m s h o v e l P r e s s , P O B 2:1715, St . L o u i s , M O 6312

SAUCER SECTIONople meeting the airship's pilot, they usuallyorted descriptions of an ordinary Americanentor. Almost all of these accounts seem to beries made up as jokes. In 1897 a farmer namedexander Hamilton made up an account of a

nge. Incredible looking "airship" crew stealingcow, and then the next day leaving it's hide onground on his property.

This made-up story by Alexander Hamilton in97, which got a lot of newspaper coverage fromople who should have known better, appears to

the origin of the myth that "aliens" are stealingws. Notice the complete arrogance of this state

nt. Because of the widespread belief in the UFOmmunity that aliens are mutilating cows, itomes a "modern myth". If someone sees a UFOn the next day finds his cow has apparentlyn mutilated, he has an entire UFO subcult tow upon for ideas about underground alienes, but an already established belief systemsts to explain why cows are turning up mutilat

extraterrestrial pranksters wielding laserms and surgical knives.

So what does the guy do if all he has actuallyn are strange lights and dead cow? does heke a connection? Does he assume the strangehts were space ships from another planet?

These two explanations, cattle mutilatingns from space and Satanic cultists representas which both yours truly and the FBI reject asse. Judging from the FBI documents obtainedder the Freedom of Information and Privacyts, the FBI concluded that the whole thing Isidentification of attacks by animal predators on

ws already dead from natural causes.

The FBI file makes very dry reading. Basicallystarts on September 4, 1974 when Nebraska

Senator Carl T. Curtis sent a newspaper clippingto the FBI asking It to look into reports of cattlemutilations "stretching from Oklahoma toNebraska". The FBI bowed out, stating "it appearsthat no federal law within the investigative juris

diction of the FBI has been violated". On January21, 1975 the Minneapolis, Minnesota FBI officereported that state veterinarians had attributedmutilations there to "other animals or varmints, believed to be foxes due to their sharp side teeth, which were described vas shearing teeth like scissors'."

Colorado Senator Floyd K. Haskell was similarly told of FBI disinterest. The big change for theFBI came when New Mexico Senator Harrison H.Schmitt talked personally with the AttorneyGeneral of the Department of Justice, Griffin B.Bell on the telephone on January 10, 1979. Bellhad the following typed onto a formal reply letter:

"Please have someone look into this matter atan early date. Sen, Schmitt is our friend and therehave been about sixty mutilations In New MexicoIn recent months. GBB."

It is very worthy of note that earlier FBI documents on this subject were listed as "cross-references', whereas this was the beginning of the mainfile. Schmitt's office sent along a copy of his file onthe subject to the FBI. Along with clippings, mostof it is reports prepared by Officer Gabe Valdez of the New Mexico state police.

Valdez's reports are weird and frightening. Hehimself was convinced at the time that the CIA orthe Department of Energy was responsible, all of this in some way being related to "some type of research into biological warfare". "Information furnished to this office by Officer VALDEZ indicatesthat the animals are being shot with some type of paralyzing drug and the blood is being drawn fromthe animals after an injection of anti-coagulant. It

appears that In some instances the cattle's legshave been broken and helicopters without anyidentifying numbers have reportedly been seen inthe vicinity of these mutilations. Officer VALDEZtheorizes that clamps are being placed on thecows' legs and they are being lifted by helicopter tosome remote area where the mutilations are takingplace and the animal is returned to its originalpasture."

Since Valdez did so much of the work, it maybe that he was the catalyst for these ideas. I personally believe that he was not, that the ideas heproposed were widespread among the researchers

investigate those fifteen. In this same memo, theFBI concluded that "It is obvious if mutilations areto be solved there is a need for a coordinated effortso that all material available can be gathered andanalyzed and further efforts synchroni zed .Whether the FBI should assume this role is a matter to be decided". It was suggested that the investigation be code-named BOVMUT, obviously for"Bovine Mutilations".

iF

THEREIS A REAL

CONCLUSIONTO BE

DRAWN, IT IS THAT THE FBI PRODUCED A

LOT OF PAPER WORK TO PLEASE SENATORSCHMITT, AND LEFT THE REAL WORK TO THE

STATE OF NEW MEXICO.

"A Conference directed by Senator HarrisonSchmitt, New Mexico, and U.S. Attorney, R. E.THOMPSON, Albuquerque, was held on 4/20/79,

at Albuquerque. This conference was opened to thepublic and was attended by law enforcement officials from New Mexico and other states, the newsmedia and interested persons. Approximately 180persons were in attendance" says an FBI reportfrom "4/25/79".

The conference was attended by many speakers and the National Enquirer. Considering the fairly wide variety of things actually said at the meeting, the Enquirer's coverage was pathetically flat. All the emphasis was on UFOs, ignoring what wasactually said by conference attendees. Some didtalk of UFOs, but the point is that the Enquirertook the depth, detail and complexity of the eventand reduced it to a UFO story. All the major theories were covered: predators, UFOs, "members of Satanic cults, or some unknown government agency." The Albuquerque FBI office "received a voluminous amount of correspondence from Interestedparties who have expounded their theories regarding this subject". The FBI got the fame but theactual result of the conference was that KennethM. Rommel, a twenty-eight year veteran of the FBIretired and joined the First Judicial District, Officeof the District Attorney, in the Animal Mutilation

Project with a $50,000 grant from the federal goernment to investigate.

The result was anti-climatical. The fifteen cattleon the Indian reservation had not been preservedfor examination, and no new mutilations came up

for the FBI to investigate. Rommel came to tconclusion that nothing was happening. "He saidto date, his investigative unit has determined thnone of the reported cases has involved whaappear to be mutilations by other than commonpredators. ROMMEL said he has traveled to otherstates and conferred with investigators in thoseareas regarding mutilations, and to date hasreceived no information which would Justify thebelief that any animals have been intentionallymutilated by human beings. ROMMEL added thregarding all the dead animals he has examined, the damage to the carcasses has always been consistent with predator action".

The last page in the file is the FBI sending back Rommels' final report, finding nothing new or noteworthy about It.

If there is a real conclusion to be drawn, it isthat the FBI produced a lot of paper work to pleaseSenator Schmitt, and left the real work to the Stateof New Mekico. I personally believe that at leassome human action was involved, that a smalminority of cattle mutilations were, and still are,the work of human beings. Most, as I've said, Ibelieve are predators. Coyotes and foxes havinlunch, dinner, breakfast, brunch, midnightsnacks, et cetera, ad infinitum.

The big question is if the Kenneth Rommelsinvestigation was accurate. The FBI itself neveractually investigated anything, except some flakesof house paint found on the roof of a pick-up trucafter a UFO sighting near Taos, New Mexico. Tcattle mutilation investigation itself, took placeamong the ideas of different groups and faded qui

etly away after a show of concern by officialdomNew Mexico. The actual answers to the cattle mutilation phenomenon are only in this file if yoaccept Kenneth Rommels, and the conventionalviewpoint.

vira l def(l)ections

BY CAR L STEADMAN

"I think there is only one way you are going tocure the virus problem. Basically, we've got to havelots of them."

—Dr. Robert Lambert, ComputerPsychologist, Concordia University

LANGUAGE IS A VIRUS

In the wake of the Michelangelo computervirus, we are presented with the opportunity to

engage in a new analysis: the entire conception of the computer-virus-as-artificial-life appears littlemore than a stillbirth. Less than one thousandcomputers were struck by the virus March 6th;this, from the five million potential victims asreported in the March 5 th San Francisco Chronicle.

What lies at stake is not the real effects. If any,of virulent computer code or the anti-viral softwaredesigned to combat it, but rather the veracity of the virus metaphor itself—that is, of the ability forlanguage to foster a living analogy for the realm of the inorganic to the realm of the organic—this, against a more tenable but less interesting move tore-conceive the computer virus as a thing bornunto itself. Perhaps, in the age of the binary computer, to fall on the side of the analog is only anostalgia. But just as the binary computer cansimulate the operation of analog mechanisms, so,too, can we simulate an argument for analogywhich has all the outward signs of being true—sothat we are no longer engaged in fabricating synthesis, but, more directly, what is synthetic. In theface of what is tenable, we will be tenacious.

AVIRUS IS STRUCTURED LIKE A BREADBOX

Computer viruses are usually defined aroundthree criteria: that they be executable, that they beable to modify other computer code, and that theybe capable of reproducing themselves. These criteria usually exclude that class of computer softwareknown as worms, which are executable and proliferate themselves, but do not infect other programs,

and Trojan horses, which perform, upon execution,a set of undesired operations (usually erasing or

The viral metaphor would seem to dictate adifferent path than thisfocusing in and rarefaction of definition: itwould instead seem toinvite a scoping outwards, itself followingthe logic of the epidemic, of that final overturning of the catastrophe. This is why someof the interior logic of the computer virusmetaphor eludes us—though a virus, a cancerous threat, the computer virus has oftenbeen seen as an agent of good (hence the "universal message of peace" of the MacMug virus, andthe experimental diagnostic viruses developedthe mid-1970s at Xerox's Palo Alto ResearchCenter), and, beyond that, a precursor of artificiallife (the probability shown to be considerable, though nigh to impossible, by Dr. Fred Cohen's1987 computations on the spontaneous generationof computer viruses). The viral metaphor should be

just that: a viral metaphor, adhering to its ownextremes of logic, expounding exponentially, multi

plying beyond the strictures of reason.

Norton, "software guru", whose name belongshe well-known data protection and recoverykage, supported this view in a statement toght magazine later that year, saying "We'reng with an urban myth. It's like the story of ators in the sewers of New York. Everyone

To the brute force of the computer virus, the

computer application poses a sheer seduction, aseduction which is victorious In every sense. Tothe pale showing of the computer virus, the computer application poses a sheer proliferation andascension to the limit (of hard drive space, of computing power). To the disguised presence and ultimate observability of the computer virus, the computer application poses a sheer presence, a ubiquity only recognizable in its lack of re-cognition, inits very Immediacy. To the destruction of data of the computer virus, the computer applicationposes a sheering point, a true departure, based on

the destruction of reality, in what is called the "virtually real". The realm of power is not the realm of seduction; to the blatant manipulation of the computer virus (which, in turn, invites a counter-power, that of the anti-viral efforts of the user) thecomputer application offers a subtle manipulation, one that relies on the user for the unauthorizedreproduction of its code, in the form of softwarepiracy.

The computer application then achieves anascendancy over the computer virus, but only inbeing more virus than virus: as a true form of artificial life, based in a seeming indifference and ultimate vulnerability, which makes it all the moreinvulnerable. This Is why we have the experience of the system crash: though the system crash can beclaimed to be, as the virus, something foreign tothe system—a result of "bugs"—this is certainlynot the case: the system crash has the effect of making the computer more vulnerable, more indifferent, warranting all the more of the user's careand attention. In this, we have the true state of affairs; as in any seduction, we think ourselves the

"users", but this is only an illusion.

Bob Dylan, LeeHarvey Oswald andhi k - u l t r a

BY K E N N T H O M A S A N D

BOB HEYER

"I'll stand up and to get uncompromisableabout it—which I have to be honest...I Just got to

be, as I got to admit that the man who shotPresident Kennedy, Lee Oswald.. .I don't knowexactly where...what he thought he was doing, butI got to admit that I, too—I saw some of myself inhim." Bob Dylan stopped the Tom Paine Awardsdinner of the Emergency Civil Liberties Union withthis observation on December 13, 1963, accordingto Bob Spitz [Dylan: A Biography, McGraw-Hill,1989).

Spitz does not make it clear whether he isquoting from a tape or has corralled quotes fromvarious magazine reports about the incident, but itis a matter of rock music lore that Dylan embarrassed the ECLU in this manner just three weeksafter JFK's murder. According to Spitz, Dylan'scomments followed a drunken rant that defendedstudent radicals in Cuba but attacked as too"respectable" the organizers of the 1963 March OnWashington (in which Dylan had participated) andotherwise maligned the liberal left that sought tohonor him with this award. In the end, he acceptedthe award in part for "the people on behalf of whowent to Cuba". This was a reference to a group of

58 students led in part by ECLC employee PaulLuce who had violated the law in the summer of 1963 and travelled to Castro's Cuba. Some of thestudents were later called before the HouseCommmittee on UnAmerican Activities.

Just as the infamous John Lennon biographerAlbert Goldman characterized Lenny Bruce's firstcrack after the assassination ("Poor VaughnMeader") as the first sick Joke about it, Dylan biographer Spitz put a similar spin on Dylan's ECLUspeech, calling his lack of remorse for the incidentsymptomatic of Dylan's inability "to confront thepeople who he had disappointed". He reports the

singer's explanation to the New Yorker that ECLmembers "had minks and jewels, and it was likthey were giving their money out of guilt...they'retrying to put morals and great deeds on thechains, but basically they don't want to jeopardizetheir position." Dylan had taken chances with hpublic life, not only writing popular and wideperformed protest anthems, but as a performerpotentially explosive voter registration rallies of theStudent Non-Violent Coordinating Committee.(Film footage of one such rally, in Greenwood,

Mississippi in July 1963, appears in the 1965 documentary by D. A. Pennebaker, Don't Look BackHis lashing out at the ECLU, albeit exacerbated byhis inebriated stupor, was meant to convey morehis distaste for its Old Left liberal membership, whose own involvements in social reform had lcalcified into making charitable donations, bwhose roots Dylan shared. Robert Shelton in h1986 book, No Direction Home (Beech Tree BookNew York), gives a more thorough accountDylan's ambiguous relationship with the ECLand his regrets over the incident, including t

Oswald did have twompanions: the strange, albino pilot David Ferrie;d Oswald's New Orleans boss Guy Bannisteritially misldentified by the late Jim Garrison asay Shaw, the defendant in Garrison's ill-fatedosecution). One analyst has suggested that thiso's presence with Oswald was an attempt tonnect CORE to theommittee, piling uptist sympathies for

Is this the realeaning of Bob Dylan'smments that "I sawme of myself in"wald? Did Dylan have

Fair Play for Cuba

In the current issue of the JFK assassinationresearch journal The Third Decade, ($20/year; StateUniversity College, Fredonia, NY 14063; the journalwill be renamed The Fourth Decade in November)editor/publisher Jerry Rose notes similaritiesbetween the lives of Glenn and Oswald, includingthe possibility that Glenn had developed a faked

pro-Castro background for himself via the FairPlay For Cuba Committee. Glenn was also laterconnected to a rifle found in Indiana reported asbeing involved with the assassination. Glenn alsohad the honor of being one of three people on the"fink" list of the 58 students, suspected as anintelligence plant. "It is possible," concludes Rose,"that Glenn, like Oswald, was being groomed as apro-communist patsy if Oswald did not for anyreason work out in the role". It is also possible thatBob Dylan had more than one patsy on his mindwhen he gave his speech before the ECLC.

Little doubt remains that Dylan shared enemies on the right with the president who would bevictimized by someone that official history namesas Lee Harvey Oswald. In his book on intelligencespook Richard Case Nagell, The Man Who KnewToo Much, author Dick Russell describes thegrowth of the Anti-Communist Liaison, an extremeright old boy network that developed aroundDouglas MacArthur's aide Charles Willoughby.

Russell characterizes one Wllloughby associate, the evangelist Billy James Hargis from Tulsa,Oklahoma, as Willoughby's publisher and friendand a central organize r of the secret Anti-Communist liaison in September 1961, "to helpsave our country from internal communism" withfinancial backing from H. L. Hunt and other rich

oil interests. Hargis also founded the ChristianCrusade, which in 1966 published the paperback Rhythm, Riots and Revolution by David Noebel, a352 page attack on the ills of folk and rock musicwith Bob Dylan featured prominently on the cover."I want my woman dirty, looking as though I'd justfound her in some alley", the cover quotes Dylan,"It triggers the animal emotion".

The book spends an entire chapter attackingDylan and disses him throughout. Dylan accumulates guilt through association with such viciousradicals as John Hammond, Pete Seeger and Gil

Turner but also as "a fellow traveler of theBroadside movement" and "a faithful disciple of identified Communist Woody Guthrie". These associations extend to Dylan's poeticinfluences, the evil SpanishCommunist Garcia Lorca and theevil German Communist BertoltBrecht (Noebel uses the morefamiliar "Bert"). The ambiguity of folk song lorist Irwin Silber'salternate admiration and jealousy for Dylan's oeuvre is used tocast aspersions in both directions, and even the inclusion of aDylan song in a poetry anthologytaints the songwriter because thepublisher "has been identified ashaving been a member of theCommunist Party". Praise fromAllen Ginsberg and Gus Halldoes not do much to improve BobDylan's reputation in Mr.Noebel's estimation. To the coverquote, taken from a 1966 interview in the Des Moines Register,Noebel adds "T want dirty longhair hanging all over the place. Ihate shaved legs or arms. I hatecleaning or astringent lotionbecause those antiseptic smellsrevolt me. I hate girls who likeRock Hudson.'", (p. 222)

hythmic-Hypnotic Music", and "Communist Usef Beat Music". These are the most heavily footnotd chapters and the research relies heavily on the

work of Edward Hunter, specifically his 1961 book rainwashing. Hunter served as chairman of the

Anti-Communist Liaison and served also as aNational Advisory Board member for the Young

mericans for Freedom. In The Man Who Knew Too Much, Dick Russell

redits a September 1950 article in the Miamiews by Hunter as the first printed use of therm "brainwashing" (Russell, p. 193) and other

wise notes that Hunter worked as a propagandapecialist for the OSS during WWII and afterwardsor the CIA. In the article. Hunter decries that theommunist Chinese have established panels of xperts in drugs and hypnotism to re-educate andeform its dissident citizens. "What Hunter did notay, then or later," notes Russell, "was that the

SS and Military Intelligence were investigatinghe same methods, starting in World War II. Andhat the CIA, starting In the late 1940s, initiateds own wide-ranging vmind-control' program, toecome known as MK-ULTRA" (Russell, p. 194).

Russell retraces Oswald's involvement in antempt to shoot General Edwin Walker in Dallasrior to the JFK assassination—including suchddities as the eradication of a license plate numer from an Oswald photo of Walker's drivewaynd awareness of the event by the FBI and the CIAefore the assassination—and suggests that, justs was possibly the case with Oswald's visit tolinton, Louisiana, members of the radical rightbserved and perhaps manipulated the events sur

ounding the Walker shooting. Russell also noteshat two weeks after the Walker shooting, the Anti-ommunist Liaison held a 125 member meetinghaired by Edward Hunter, primarily to discuss

mind-control, psychological warfare and "ideologial conversion". (Russell, p. 327) Although origially skeptical of the mind-control scenario withegard to Oswald, Russell lists Hunter's brain

washing expertise and the Washington seminar aswo chief reasons to re-examine it carefully.

As the Christian Crusade lambasted Bob Dylannd the folkies of the 1960s for brainwashingouth into Communism, bad personal hygiene and

maybe even unsafe sex, new research suggestshat it might have been more directly involved invents that did much more to change the country'solitical and cultural landscape. In trying presentng Dylan as a brainwash ing tool of theommunists, the Christi an Crusade instead

evealed its own pre-occupation with the practice

nd, perhaps, its own affinity with the notorious

MK-ULTRA.Some of Dylan's friends suggest that the singer

did become more cautious of the JFK assassination; it is a matter of record that his writing beganmoving away overtly political protest songs. Thesimplified explanation is that the Beatles camealong and signalled pop music's return to

rock'n'roll. Dylan, however, gave up writing protestwith the songs he wrote in early 1964 for the Another Side of Bob Dylan album, prior to theimpact of the Beatles.

On The UsefulnessOf ConspiracyTheories

BY L E N BRACKEN

""The conspiracy theory of history' was in thenineteenth century a reactionary and ridiculousbelief, at a time when so many powerful socialmovements were stirring up the masses. Today'spseudo-rebels are well aware of this, thanks tohearsay or a few books, and believe that it remainstrue for eternity. They refuse to recognize the realpraxis of their time; it is too sad for their coldhopes. The state notes this fact, and plays on it."Guy Debord, Comments On The Society of theSpectacle.

The evidence is so overwhelming that thereis hardly any need to qualify the followingstatement: everything the cops on television tellyou is "terrorism,' is actually governmentprovocation (only in rare exceptions is itgenuine warfare). In other words, what youwould be led to believe is "terrorism' is simplypolitics. To cite a recent case, the World TradeCenter bombing, those arrested for this deedwould not have know n how to make thebombs, or even considered the action, had itnot been for the F BI infil trato r who wasrecently interviewed on National Public Radio. To what use can we put our knowledge of government/media conspiracies such as this?

When I say "we," I mean those of us whoorganize micro-revolutionary societies, and toanswer the question I would Insist on callinginto question the intentions of anyone callingfor armed struggle. Consider another example:

a Black Liberation Army agent provocateur from the FBI faci litat ed the break-in androbbery of the Compton Armory in the early1970s so that the BLA would have grenadelaunchers and other muni tions. Beware of being given bombs by the powers that stage-manage the world. As Gianfranco Sanguinetti, author of the highly insightful On Terrorismand the State, knew first hand, the mere words"posse ssion of arms" and "su bver siveconspiracy" can send you up.

A glance at few more cases of thegovernment playing the terrorist card against the

the German underground was riddled with policeagents; and in this book, this key figure in theJune 2nd Movement renounces armed struggle.

From The OtherSide of the Pond:Ustica Tales

BY J I M CREGAN

It has been rumored that Luciano Benettonhas been trying to buy the Milan Internazionale"INTER" soccer team and has offered around $120million. The going value for a team of INTER'sstature is around $65-70m and INTER has beenon bad times lately.

This, to me, seemed to be peculiar. So I decidedto sniff around a few days in a trench coat and seewhat would turn up. Pay Day! It seems that LuckyLuke is about to get an "Awiso di Garanzia", whichis an official notice, informing one that he is underinvestigation by the state for high crimes and misdemeanors.

It seems that even he has been caught up inthe "Tangentopoli" scandal in Italy. Systematicbribes to every party for public works projects. They have arrested hundreds now.

Reliable sources have it that Benneton was trying to get in on a mega clothing factory in one of those countless government-owned companies in

every field, created by the Ministry for theReconstruction of the South, a major source of income for the Mafia. In the new government policyof privatization. Our Hero was trying to get hissuper big, high tech factory that they never knewhow to run right, and make money with it. Hewould also get huge tax breaks for Investing In ahigh unemployment area. The deal was practicallya give-away. But not only was it going to cost hima bundle up front, so the minister could grease theappropriate palms to get the deal through, but healso had to buy INTER at an inflated price because

the Socialist party has got a lot of money tied up init.Turns out also that he is gay and has alwayshad a thing for Luciano, from when he did that "DoYou Know Me?" commercial for American Express.

So there is a journalist who's locked up in jailin Treviso right now on charges of burglary. Theyclaim he stole a bunch of documents from theoffice of L.B. Upon investigation, it turns out that:1. He didn't break in to anybody's office; and 2. hehad in his possessions pictures of ol' Lucky Lukein bed with the minister, playing Lone Ranger andTonto, with spurs and everything. They stopped

him and searched him because he ran a light. They found the pics and took him in. The localpolice are just Lucky Luke's lackeys anyway andnow they're trying to switch the evidence and sendthis guy up, without having the photos come out.(Only one, which Benneton decided to use for hislatest campaign.) Luke must have some big friendshimself, because someone got to the minister andhe suddenly can't find the negatives to the pics.Luciano can't find them either. Seems whoeverwent to get them, kept them.

Apparently, there are people of different political persuasions who would like to see theSocialists keep INTER and continue losing money. It is a real drain. If they can stop Luc from buyingINTER, they hurt the Socialists, but Luke doesn'tget the factory. He wants that factory.

So if the gay minister was in on the deal to sellINTER to Our Hero, why did he take those pictures

on that blessed night? Extra insurance? And if theD.C. has got the pictures to persuade Luc frombuying INTER, why don't they just hit him foranother bribe and sell the factory to him anyway? They are the largest party in the coalition. Whocares about the minister? But the minister has losthis cool. He got an Awiso di Garanzia as well forother dirty things he's in. He's upset about thosephotos disappearing and the negatives by thatgorilla. He's in the deal on INTER and needs to unload. And Luciano probably hasn't called himagain after that night and this has distressed him.

So he freaked out when they questioned him onthe other deals and told his whole story. Thus,Luciano's awiso.

There is an old story that at one time, abouttwenty years ago, when INTER was owned by theCommunist party (and losing money). INTER's two"allowed foreign players" on the team wereRussians on loan from the Russian sports ministry. Athletes at one time were a big money cornerfor the Reds. So apparently no one on the teamknew about these kids' connections, but theirfathers were both big honchos back home.

They say the CIA found out and was behind alot of the financing when the Socialists bought theteam. The money they used was a slush fundNixon had left over after the Vietnam war. This wasalso tied In with Sinatra somehow, because it wasright around that period when the Communistsalmost entered into the "Historic Compromise"with the D.C. when they had 33% of the electorate.

They got into a money bind with that electoralcampaign and ended up selling INTER to balanceaccounts. Only that the Americans then passedthe money through a bank in the middle east

where it got frozen with all other western financialassets during one of the oil embargoes. So theSocialists got INTER, the Americans got to theRussian players and the Communists only gottheir money a year later and were in formalbankruptcy proceedings. The government allegedlylet them off the hook in exchange for an agreementnot to try to get into the government for anotherten years. Well Berlinguer died ten years ago andyou know the rest of the story.

Now Luciano has come on the scene and itseems that the CIA doesn't want him to have theteam either. They don't particularly care if theSocialists get their money back, but rumor has itthat someone is buriedout under the north goalzone. Luciano doesn'treally want the team. Healready has a Formula 1racing team, a basketballteam, Rugby and volleyball. But he has heardthe story about the northgoal as well and maybethere's a connectionthere.

Yuri Popanov, thestriker and top goal scorer for INTER was the sonof Boris Popanov, the one

time Minister of Consumer Manufacturing in theSoviet Union. Every one knows that this Ministryis nothing more than the supply line for clothes, food and cars for the Russian Nomenklature.Anyone who is anyone has their vices supplied bythe Ministry and no inconvenient lines to stand in.the delivery guys are full of KGB agents. Thus aninteresting source of info for the CIA.

Years ago, Benneton tried to set up a little factory in the USSR, the factory would never havebeen able to produce any significant amount of goods. But it was a front for Benneton to import

extra stock and end of series of defective goodsfrom his clothing business in Italy. The Russianswould pay a month's wages for one of his sweatersand the Ministry got its cut.

During one of his trips to Russia years ago, theKGB got some compromising pictures of Luke withthe American ambassador. He seems to have quitea reputation about these things. The Ambassadorleft soon after with the closing of the Nixon administration and the photos lost a good deal of theirvalue. But there was still the Italian Clothing mag

nate to squeeze, he let go of his part of the clothing

deal to set up there and they sent the pics to Italywith a courier. The courier was Yuri Papanov. Wasthe KGB on to Yuri? Did they know the BENETTON would kill for those pics? Or was he a successful double agent?

One day Papanov simply didn't show up forpractice and was never heard from again. But it'strue when INTER fans say that the grass is alwaysgreener under the north goal. You should see it.

Yuri's "controller", the KGB agent assigned tokeep an eye on him while abroad, was a femaledoctor on the training staff. Allesandra Pitchken.Yuri's teammates nicknamed one portion of hisanatomy his "third foot". It is not known if he ever

scored a goal with it. When Yuridisappeared, Allesandra took upwith the other Russian playeruntil the end of the season. Theother player's contract was suddenly revoked and he went back to finish his career with REDSTAR in Vladivostock.

Now she hadn't seen him Inyears and no one knows if shefound out about the CIA puttingthe squeeze on Yuri. But it cameout a few years ago that her namewas on the passenger list of thatfamous flight from Bologna toPalermo. They say she had a

reservation in a cheap hotel in Palermo for thenight and a booking on the Palermo-Tunis flightthe next morning. It's a very inconvenient way of going to Tunis. You change in Rome and be inTunis for dinner time. The Palermo Tunis is byTunis Air and is mainly to ferry immigrant farmworkers back and forth to the citrus orchards inSicily. They even let them take chickens on theplane! Is this a possible American motive for theUstica disaster?

Caries, Cabals andCorrespondenceLETTERS FROM READERS

"Bircher Myths"I read Jim Martin's "Quigley, Clinton, Straight

and Reich" with much Interest. I didn't know thatthe New Republic under Michael Straight had initiated the persecution of Reich. Very interesting! Itraises the possibility in my mind that Reich wastoo close to revealing the occult secrets of theJudeo-Masonic-Anglophile cryptocracy. After all,Reich's "orgone" is very similar to the weird energycalled "Vril" discussed in Bulwer Lytton's mysterious occult allegory, Vrtl: The Power of the ComingRace. Recall that British Oligarch Lytton was thehead of the Rosicrucian Society.

Though my reaction to Martin's article is generally positive, I was disappointed that he has notyet disabused himself of several "Bircher Myths"regarding Carroll Quigley and, for that matter,Michael Straight. Quigley was not an insider to theJudeo-Masonic-Anglophile Round Table conspiracywhich he exposed. On the contrary, as aGeorgetown Jesuit protege of Jesuit FatherEdmund Walsh, a Vatican insider and inspirer of Joe McCarthy, Quigley must be seen In the tradi

tion of anti-Judeo/Masonic propagandists such asFather Coughlln and Rev. Fahey, though considerably more sophisticated and light years more subtle. Quigley said only that he was allowed to work at Pratt House (CFR) for a bit and examine some of their records. All this has been explained in detailin the Project.

Also, according to his own autobiography, inwhich he admitted his collaboration with theSoviets, Straight never believed in communism. He, as a trained economist, thought communisteconomics were insane! However, as an Anglophile,he hated fascism, Nazism, and the Vatican moreand supported the left on that basis! He also wasaware of Quigley's charges against him, i.e. conspiring with his super-rich relatives to manipulatepolitics (sandbag left-winger Wallace) and land airline routes for his relative "Jock Whitney". Hedenied Quigley's charges, dismissing Quigley as aconspiracy nut. rather than looking at Straight asa Red it might be better to view him as anAnglophile consciously or unconsciously followingthe covert Anglophile geopolitical strategy to ulti

mately destroy or subvert the Catholic Church.Sincerely yours,

Jim Martin's Response:Quigley is the type of guy, if he had lived,

who would be a founding member of the

Trilateral Commission. He was an "insider" tothe extent that he travelled freely fromacademia into government service and the business world.

I hope the article conveyed the frenziedconfusion I encountered while laying out theissue of Steamshovel at the same time I waswriting that article. At the last moment I foundthe info about Straight's induction into a secretsociety by Anthony Blunt, and it really sent mefor a loop.

I'd like to read more about Father Coughlln. He reminds me of a radio-talk show host:Chuck Harder. I think you make a good pointabout Quigley's connection to Americannativism. Another star in the pantheon of "Birchite" devils was Col. Edwin MandellHouse. I've just read "Philip Dru,Administrator", and I was shell -shocked.Quigley talks about him a bit, but I've neverseen the full story. Here's what I know: he wasforeign service advisor to President Wilson, authored the federal income tax, was a founding member of the Council on Foreign Relationsas well as a member of the Round Table Group, pushed the League of Nations, and in 1919 published a novel about Philip Dru, an ex-militaryofficial who spearheads a popular rebellionagainst the US government, suspends the constitution, institutes a socialist ("enlightenedCapitalist") federal government, and after aseven-year dictatorship, writes a new constitution along global-corporate lines. The noveleven has leaked tape recordings and the incorporation of Mexico into a free-trade zone!

I recently found a copy of Mike Straight'sautobiography, After Long Silence, and it's fascinating. I think he was lying through histeeth. What I've read so far just doesn't havethe ring of truth, or at least the importantissues, anyway. The whole thing smacks of aguy who's been hauled up before HUAC andNixon, and who has a lot to explain. Let's see,he wasn't really a communist, even though hepassed on State Department secrets to a Soviethandler some ten years after being sent to theUS by Blunt (and Stalin, if we are to believe

Straight), but he was just doing a favor to helpsome old friends. OK, he hired Lew Frank tohelp Wallace, knew he was a hard line communist, but didn't really expect him to cut Wallaceoff from the liberals. Call it anglophile, old-boynetwork, communist conspiracy, the effect isstill the same: he walked from all charges, was

able to dabble in national politics, and providea national forum from which Communists couldspout off and in their spare time assassinateReich.

As for Reich, if Straight wanted to destroythe Catholic Church, he should have beenpraising him in The New Republic. I'm hard-pressed to think of one other figure who's donemore to subvert popery than Reich. However,Reich's only concern with myst icism, theoccult "cryptocracy" and secret societies wasto understand them in the context of the masspsychology of fascism. Many people, likeBulwer Lytton, have written about a vital energy; we only remember Reich because he wasthe first to provide objective evidence. AndBirchite I ain't.

"Loose Connection & Nitpicking"

I like the notion of Chomsky/ Zinn being an"establishment opposition". Basically, of course,it's a Marxist-or Marxist-ish-establishment. The

idea that these people are agents-for anybody-isidiotic. They're just people with brains stuck inruts. (Like the rest of us... )

As for the Jim Martin piece...It certainly isinteresting but I think there are too many looseconnections in it. For example:

1. First column he writes "Today the RhodesMilner Group manifests itself as the CFR, Tris, etc." See, this just isn't accurate enough."Manifests itself as" is far too strong, implying toocausal, too direct a link. There is not a shred of evidence that the Rhodes-Milner Group, the inner

core described by Quigley, still exists.2. Second column, Martin writes, "the centuryold master plan to end national sovereignty (etc.)...Quigley documents all this". Does he? I don't think so.

3. Third column, Martin writes "NAFTA... abrogates whatever's left of our Constitution". Does it?

And so on. OK, I'm nit-picking but then that'swhat I'm into. Quigley is important for sure, but I'dprefer it if the material were more carefully handled. There is no way of knowing why Clintonkeeps referring to Quigley. But equally there is noreason to assume it's any more meaningful than

the simple fact of a young man meeting a verypowerful older intellect. Martin sort of suggeststhat Clinton knows what Quigley represented. ThisI doubt very much (just as I doubt that more thana handful of the present CFR members have everheard of Quigley, Round Table etc.)

No matter. It's good stuff is Steamshovel. We

don't have to agree, do we?Regards,Robin RamsayLobsterHull, U.K.

Jim Martin's response:No, we don't have to agree, but I must admit

I do agree that there are too many loose connections in the article. As for nit-picking, I wassure you'd point out my obvious confusionabout the Oxford - Cambridge schools. Is Oxforda part of Cambridge, or is it the other wayaround? The article does read as thoughRaymond Chandler were channeling for MaeBrussell. Again, I wrote the piece at the sametime I was laying out the last issue, and alsowhile I was completing the research. Not veryconducive for tight associations but then Idoubt if Steamshovel is likely to be quoted assource material for American journalism. Iadmire LOBSTER'S strict observance of research conventions, but the American scene

is a bit more liberated (to put it kindly). Thefact is that loose connections are FUN. It's adaunting task to present a 1300 page historybook as a juicy read. As you pointed out in yourreview of Steamshovel (Lobster #27), we are theheirs of Mae Brussell, Abbie Hoffman, RobertAnton Wilson and even Bob Banner, who hasleft the field for higher grounds. Hell, I practically grew up listening to Mae and Dave Emoryon the radio waves here in California. I wouldn'tknow what to do with a tight connection if ithad me by the throat. While Lobster cautiously

ponders the relevancy of UFOs and mind control, Steamshovel plows ahead with the N-machine at full throttle. I see much value inboth approaches. As for your specific points:

1. I chose the word "manifest" very carefully. Literally, it means "to show the hand". Col.Edwin Mandell House both belonged to theRound Table and founded the CFR. You shouldread his novel, it's a dilly. As an analogy, there's not a shred of evidence that AdamWeishaupt's Bavarian Illuminati still exists, butit's symbolism is manifest on American curren-

cy.2. Are we reading the same book? Maybe

"documents" is too strong a word, since as Ipointed out, Quigley doesn't offer a single footnote. To be sure, I'm not exactly a big fan of national sovereignty, but the fact remains: Iprefer that to the global state first proposed by

Rhodes.3. NAFTA hands over vital decisionmaking

powers to the international governing bodies of world corporate trade. These powers are designated to congressional authorities by theConstitution. Congress will essentially lose itspower to set trade policy and tariffs underNAFTA. Just like Col. House had it scoped in1910.

"I Can Now Talk"

When looking at the railroad yards at theKennedy assassination, It's worth mentioning thatI set Deans table a Marshal l Univ ers ity ,Huntingdon, West Virginia on November 22, 1963.The Assa ssinati on Material Act of 1992 hasbecome law and I can now talk of my return fromthis NATO assignment. I uncovered capability, strategy and plan, of which I forewarned the CIA.Does the National Archives in Washington, DCwant to get a copy of my new book, which I wasasked not to publish before Robert Gates (formerCIA chief) gave the word? what was declassified? If Steamshovel Press printed this letter, the first stepwould be taken in opening up the Kennedy assassination. Forget E. Howard Hunt and Frank Sturgis and go back to Heidelberg, Germany andlet Kenneth Smith publish his book.

Kenneth SmithCeredo, West Virginia

"Mutton Headed As Possible"Today people are afraid to use their God-given

brains to think with because they know that their

advisors and the Bible intends that they should beas mutton headed as possible and let their advisors do the thinking. To me, the most importantpart of Steamshovel Is your real deep digging intothe assassination of JFK and I'm sure many othershave this idea too.

"SteamShovel... might...be...a SET UP"

I was obviously impressed with the quality of Steamshovel and the range of material was so close

to my own proclivities I worried momentarily thismight...be...a SET UP...one issue of a fake mag inmy favorite comic shop designed FOR ME, toencourage a response, the its: Mister Oswald, weneed you to help protect the president in Dallas, take this rifle, and stand over...there...yas...that'sIt...but I'm happy to see your mag is a healthyongoing concern and I look forward to futureissues.

Book ReviewsGrace Beats Karma by Neal Cassady

"You can work yourself into anything," Neal

Cassady once told an acid test audience at theBerkeley Theatre, "How do you get out of it?" Heponders that question at some length during theearly correspondence found in Grace Beats Karma, ail letters by Cassady just published for the firsttime by Blast Books ($12.95; POB 51, New York,NY 10276-0051). The earliest chapters reflectCassady's frustration that he could not get wifeCarolyn to use their house as property collateral toget him balled out. After that resentment cooled, the letters practically turned into devotional sermons with Carolyn serving as the muse to this

great muse of the Beats, if only in his alliterativesalutations ("Dearest Devoted Deeply DisturbedDarling..., Carolyn").

Neal Cassady had indeed worked himself Into apainful prison stretch for the crime of trading twojoints to some undercover cops for a ride home. The way out was to get religion, or, rather, asCarolyn explains in her introduction to the volume, use the Catholicism of his youth to occupy hismind while serving the time. Carolyn Cassady'sbook. Off The Road, makes a good companion toGrace Beats Karma, as it details the events of Cassady's life during the time of the correspondence. Her Introduction to this book also providesthe needed buffer to reading cold the hard-heartedassessments by Cassady of those who admiredhim: "Pagan poet Allen, Indecisive doodiller Jack [Kerouac], viciously degenerate Burroughs, utterlymad Celine...all the other pitifully distorted freaksI've known" (p.30); and "ignoring all this Zen trash"while reading the early books of Alan Watts.

Instead, Cassady waxes heavy-handed withCatholicism, memorizing names of the popes,

repeating endless novenas and prattling on, asCarolyn Cassady surmises, with a Catholic schoolboy's morality, even accepting his unfair Imprisonment as a due penance. Throughout the volume, however, the je ne sals quols of Cassady's character—the ebullience, the hopelessly unflltered openness remarkable in a convict serving time contemporaneous to the thoughts expressed—overcomeseven those deep, early Papist imprints. Of sin, heexplains to his godfather, Father Harley Schmitt,in one letter, "the sin delayed until conquered intime—is another inch upward, right? i. e., via this

method, plus prayer naturally, I completely over

came masturbation some years ago..."; another offhand remark concludes that "a provocative studyof th e Holy Shrou d of Tur in by Rev.Wuenschel...ought to surely convince almost anyskeptic of the resurrection". Carolyn Cassadyexplains in the introduction that the two had intruth come to a more complex and personal interpretation of Christ through Many Mansions byGina Cerminara, the Theosophists, Teilhard deChardln, Meister Eckhart and others, includingthe clairvoyant Edgar Cayce. Struggling to combinethis lofty mysticism with his in-prison need forreligious expression and tangible spirituality,Cassady tells the priest that "besides proclaimingtruth of Catholic Church alone, Cayce could dose, see auras, correctly analyze any piece of ground ormetal alloy, &, in trance, performed 9 scientificallyImpossible acts..."

The Cassady spin on things conquers the facileCatholicism at which he groped throughout thiscorrespondence. The book appears in advance in afull-blown biography of Cassady, the most comprehensive one perhaps ever written, researched andwritten by T. K. Christopher. Christopher and others involved in putting together Grace Beats Karmadeserve great credit for a remarkable new look atCassady, remarkable also In that it comprises virtually a third of all of Cassady's written output.

The book also contains a concluding essay,

"Poetry, Violence and the Trembling Lambs", byAllen Ginsberg, that begins "Recent history is therecord of a vast conspiracy to impose one level of mechanical consciousness on mankind..."

The Letters of William S. Burroughs, 1945-1959,edited by Oliver Harris

In another letters collection. The Letters of William S. Burroughs ($25; Viking, Penguin BooksUSA, 375 Hudson Street, New York, NY 10014),Burroughs looks at conspiracy more from themicro-management level, asserting that "it's likethere's this vast, Kafkian conspiracy to prevent mefrom ever getting off junk". He calls Cassady "thevery soul of this voyage into pure, abstract meaningless motion...ready to sacrifice family, friends, even his very car itself to the necessity of movingfrom one place to another", but this is as close as

he comes to a compliment. His derogatory comments, however, include the insightful observationthat Cassady "lacks any clear notion of how heappears to others". Later advice to forestall hisrace-track betting went unheeded, and after losinga fortune on the horses, one of Cassady's girlfriends committed suicide.

Many of these letters cover familiar territory, including Burroughs' life in Tangier and the development of the routines that later comprised Naked

Lunch, although he seems surprisingly repelled bythe products of his imagination in the early letters.

The correspondence also reveals the removal as"irrelevant" of several Naked Lunch pages thatinclude material on orgonomy-founder WilhelmReich, whose social and political theoriesBurroughs eschews (lauding instead a noxiousred-bater named Westbrook Pegler) while callingReich's work on cancer "of incalculable importance". While the work is still important and stillobscure. Burroughs rema ins one of the greatexamples of the efficacy of the orgone accumulator.

Even though it covers well-known biographicalepisodes, such as the search for the yage hallu

cinogen and travels to Paris, London, Rome andVenice, and contains many familiar characters(Kerouac, Ginsberg, Cassady and Reich, but alsoPaul Bowles, Brion Gysin, Lawrence Ferlinghetti)Burroughs' great wit and sardonicism emerge herein more direct detail than anywhere else. TedMorgan's Literary Outlaw would make a good companion book to read along with Letters 1945-1959,as would the At The Front anthology by JennieSkerl and Robin Lydenberg, to which the editor of this volume, Oliver Harris, contributed. A secondvolume is planned and Burroughs is working on a

new novel scheduled for a June 1994 release, aswell as a memoir entitled Evil River (perhaps withthe recent tumultuous Midwestern floods inmind?). Meanwhile, Grove Press has produced acolor-coordinated trilogy of Naked Lunch, TheTicket That Exploded and The Soft Machine($8.95@; Grove Press, 841 Broadway, New York,NY 10003-4793).

Another Beat-oriented work good for a quick chuckle is Growl & Other Poems by David Shevin($6.95; Carpenter Press, POB 14387, Columbus,Ohio 43214), which anthologizes the imaginedpoetry of the pets of great English writers, unfortunately mostly not the Beats. It includes the mysticinsight of Ginsberg's dog, Solomon, "I saw the bestmutts of my germi nation destroyed bybadness...leashed along through the burbs atdawn looking for an empty lawn". On an utterlydisconnected side note, the publishers also make

available a book on the possibly hoaxeddeath

of John Dillinger, The Dillinger Dossier by Jay RobertNash ($12.50).

Extraterrestlal Friends and Foes by George Andrews

Saucers of The Illuminati by Jay KatzThe Book of the Law by Alelster Crowley

Reich studies advanced a bit with two newbooks from IllumiNet, the Georgia-based publisher

whose wares should engage deeply the interest of anyone wanting to explore the depths of alien-related conspiracy thinking. Although both booksprovide cogent overviews of this sort of mondo-the-orizing, both also should appeal to audiencesalready up-to-speed and eager for details.

George C. Andrews, in Extra Terrestrial Friendsand Foes ($14,95; IllumiNet Press, POB 2808.Lilburn, GA 30226) devotes an entire chapter tothe "The Martyrdom of Wilhelm Reich", characterizing Reich's death in prison and the slandering of his work as "insane" because of its UFO compo

nent, as "specious and odious". The chapter provides a brief review of Reich's UFO work, andmakes new connections between Reich's term forUFOs, "Ea", and a Babylonian god of the samename that may have been the basis for the Hebrewgod Jehovah. This is a synchronistic analysis, of course, and Andrews does not suggest this wasReich's intent. By synchronicity also, Andrewsrelates anecdotes of recent saucer sightings involving melanor, an ash that Reich associated withUFO activity. The examples came to Andrews vianewsclips as he was preparing the Reich chapter

or Extra-Terrestrial Friends and Foes, so hencluded them In media res.

Such a synchronistic organization scheme isboth the flaw and the saving grace of Andrew'swriting style. Andrews is a ufologist of some repuation, collecting enormous amount of informationo help him catalog and describe a variety of extra

errestrial visitors, the ubiquitous greys as well asother benign and hostile off-earth presences that,he posits, interacts with mankind. The informaion—including information on Andrews himself—spins out like a spider web. The web's main arteres Include a catalog of different types of aliens,

speculation about their various agendas andexamination of related phenomena like abductionsand government cover-up. In between, however, are lesser threads that also tell a lot, like whathappened to Gary Stollman, who put a BB gun toconsumerist David Horowitz and forced him toread a statement on alien clones; and more support for the notion that Gordon Novel was theUmbrella Man on Dealey Plaza. While pursuing itsmain themes, Extra-Terrestrial Friends and Foes ispacked with quantas of information, rumors, speculation, obscure facts, that really make it a page-urner to the end.

Whereas Andrews takes as a given the exisence of the various extra-terrestrials. Saucers of he Illumlnatl ($10; IllumiNet; 8.5x11 spiral bound)

presents author Jay Katz's critical view of thenotion that flying saucers come from outer space.Katz offers a Freemasonic conspiracy as thesource. "It is verifiable that Masons and their alliedsecret societies are hardwired Into the corridors of control of government and intelligence agencies,"argues Katz, "comprising a level of unseen motivearid hidden intention". Katz' chapter of Reich,"Suppressed Tech" repeats speculation thatReich's last work may have been smuggled out of prison and charges the American College of Orgonomy, founded to carry on Reich's work, withbeing a front for the Knights of Malta, attempting

to "discourage or co-opt any independent interestn Reich's scientific legacy". Saucers of thellumlnatl also directs criticism at the "gosh wowaliens are among us" people and at the panoply of widely-known ufologlsts such as John Lear andBill Cooper who apparently maintain ties with thentelligence communities. The book pursues itshesis through an examination of Philip K. Dick

(previewed in the last Issue of Steamshovel Press)and also relies heavily on the work of JamesShelby Downard and Michael Hoffman. Saucers of the Illumlnatl is a thoughtful analysis and a fine

addition to the anti-Masonic literature.

These two heavy-weight IllumiNet offeringsshould not obscure an Aliester Crowley cassettealso available from the publisher. The Book of the

Law ($9.95) was originally channelled to Crowleyby an alien named Alwass and here it is re-interpreted by Steven Ashe and Carolyn Hucker.

Bob Dylan, Performing Artist by Paul Williams

The second volume of Paul Williams' Bob Dylan, Performing Artist, like the first, is a highlysubjective work. In fact, Williams seems to regardthe subjectivity of his text as its principle virtue. He tells In his preface:

"The idea of "explaining a performance' is, in areal sense, absurd. What we can attempt to examine, however, is the experience of the observer, thelistener, the person who is moved by the performance. If this can be described, however imperfectly, then we have the beginning of a commonreference point for discussion of Dylan's work."

Happily Williams' survey offers a considerableamount of information about Dylan's work, Inaddition to telling us how Williams "feels" aboutDylan's performances; for his thesis is in error ontwo counts. First, Williams' idea that he candescribe what he feels as an observer is no lessabsurd than the idea that someone can explainwhat Dylan does in a performance. But the moreblatant fallacy concerns the fact that Williamswould have Dylan's admirers use his description of his personal response to Dylan as their "commonreference point": it is Dylan's work, not Williams',that has potential to serve as a common referencepoint, for Americans and for people of othernations; and this is not brought out by Williams'text.

At one point, while comparing his views abouta particular song to the views of another dylanolo-gist named Clinton Heylin, Williams is so carriedaway by his notion of the importance of his enterprise as to remark that, "...history is made up of

nothing more or less than the opinions of Heylinand me and the newspaper reviewers...etc..."Perhaps he meant to say "the historical record"rather than "history" is made up of opinion; buthis book ignores, and almost obliterates, that factthat Bob Dylan, the man whose name appears asthe title of his book, is an important historical figure. The closest Williams comes to speaking of Dylan's place in history is near the end of thebook, where he speculates In passing that a particular song is the sort of song that would enableDylan to "set the world on fire again". However,Williams does not offer a clue about what he

means by this statement.Williams' repeated insistence in both the first

and second volumes of his text that the soundsDylan has produced are all important, and that thewords of his songs and their meaning are not soimportant, is perverse. So are his interpretations of the lyrics of some of Dylan's songs. He informs us

several times that he does not share Dylan's faithin Jesus, and Jesus's power to save sinners fromHell; but Williams' skepticism should not inhibithim from seeing, for example, that in the song"Dark Eyes" Dylan is surely singing about the endof the world and the damned, as well as about hisrelationship with a woman. Williams' interpretation of this one song would hardly matter if it werenot that he fails to discover the religious content of other songs as well, in this and the preceding volume. Williams speaks respectfully of Dylan's avowal of Christianity, but he does not seem to see that

what enabled Dylan to "set the world on fire" in the1960s may have been the way he brought theIdeas preserved by the Judeo-Christian tradition tobear on a number of issues of burning interest atthe time.

The volume concerns The Middle Years: 1974-1986, so Williams can be excused for not enteringinto an extended discussion of the 60s and thepeace movement In this book; but he barelyacknowledges Dylan's importance as a historicalfigure in the first volume either, which covers The

Early Years: 1962-1973. Williams might defend

himself by saying that he is not a historian, andthat the history of the peace movement is not hissubject; however, his disregard for the subject of Dylan's role as "the spokesman of his generation"and "the prophet of the peace movement," combined with his advice against the logic of Dylan'swords, undermines his contribution to Dylan studies.

In God We Trust by Brand Nubtan and PurePoverty by Poor Righteous Teachers

Not all racist propaganda comes in cheap publications printed by cranky old white men. Thesedays it also comes on hi-tech CDs and cassettesrecorded by cranky young black men and distributed by major labels. Isn't free enterprise wonderful?

Both Brand Nubian (In God We Trust, Elektra,1992) and Poor Righteous Teachers [Pure Poverty,Profile, 1991), are members of the Five PercentNation, an unorganized, more radical offshoot of

the racist Nation of Islam, Malcolm X's alma mater.

currently headed by Louis Farrakhan. the FivePercenters accept all the basic teaching of the NOIbut reject their stringent codes of dress and behavior. (Except the prohibition against pork. I assumethat they must do something to Justify callingthemselves Muslims.) The reason for this antino-mianism is the Five Per Center's extreme gnosti

cism, which they push to the solipsistlc limit: theybelieve themselves to be—literally—Gods, individually and collectively.

Brand Nubian form the bridge between Five PerCent and gangsta rap: ganga-addled thugs wrapping their amorality In the threadbare cloak of religious righteousness. An old trick, Just ask theKlan. On their most recent release. In God WeTrust, (the "God" they trust is themselves, of course), they show why the Identity of God "Ain'tNo Mystery" (not blue-eyed Jesus, but theSupreme Black Man),, praise the black Godhead

("Allah U Akbar") and "Pass the Gate". In the lattercut, they fantasize robbing a gun store of its stock for arming their future army, kil ling all thehostages so as not to leave witnesses, and "shoot afaggot in the back/for acting like that".

Throughout, Brand Nubian indulge in variouskinds of gangsta, boast, and bitch rap. In "Love Mor Leave Me Alone" and "Steal Ya "Ho", MCs LordJamar and Sadat X wax arrogant in their misogyny. "I ain't down for a honey who don't submit,"intones Lord Jamar, summing up their attitude towomen. In the latter song, they warn Jealousboyfriends to keep their temper when the godssteal their hos because they "know a place withnice, soft soil".

Brand Nubian seem inclined to a selectivebelief in conspiracies. On "The Godz..." Lord Jamarwarns "Black man change your demeanor/there'sgonna be some shit when they unleashFEMA/we're headin'/for Armageddon..." On "TheMeaning of the 5%" they sample Louis Farrakhansermonizing on the identity of the "poor righteousteachers", the 5% of the black population whoknow the truth—that the Original Black Man of Asia is the Supreme God—and must teach theignorant 85% of their brethren, in opposition to the10% of the Uncle Toms who obscure the truth andpersecute the poor righteous 5% In service to theirwhite devil masters. This proves, as the Five PerCenters claim, that Farrakhan is in essentialagreement with them on dogma.

Brand Nubian herald the (racial) Apocalypse, envisioning through blunt-aided Third Eyes thecoming day when entire city blocks swim in bloodand the white devil's civilization is stomped, "like

the Stars and Stripes/burnt up in the mud". They

now they 're gonna win because God—theupreme Black Man, which includes themselves—on't like ugly.

Poor Righteous Teachers don't like ugly either.ore than once on Pure Poverty they insist thatey aren't equal to "Caucasian mountain devils"

"cavemen". They are less condescending

wards (black) women than Brand Nubian, butat seems to be because they aren't as pussy-bsessed as BN. They are, difficult as it is toelieve, even more self-absorbed than BN, managg to punctuate nearly every song with their team

hant of "P-R-T!" With the exception of "Shakiyla",love song that seems to be their "hit", and a

oast rap built around a sample of a womanoaning in orgasm, "Hot Damn I'm Great" (it's so

ard to be humble when you're G-O-D...), most of e PRT's raps are Five Per Cent tirades. A reviewerr Spin compared the lyrics on this album to "the

paratist rantings of the KKK" and recommendedto white listeners as a soundtrack to "dance youray to the gas chamber". After repeated listeningsit, however, you'll be begging them to let you cutthe front of the line to quickly end the agony.

Musically, Brand Nubian is more interesting.heir style is funky, spare, and rather laid back,nd they also manage to make each cut soundnique, atypical of most rap. But then, that'secause of the eclectic range of "samples" theyborrow" (ie, rip-off) from other people's records torovide the beats. PRT are more frenzied, their wall

wall sound Is more "African", owing much to theythms and phrasings of reggae, but cranked upke rastas on speed. Lead MC Wise Intelligentndeed, humility is no Five Per Cent Virtue) spewsut lyrics so fast and furious you can almost feele spittle, the difference between each of theiruts is often minimal, leading to a veryonotonous listening experience.

Despite this, there are odd similarities betweene two releases. Both groups do homages to

Marcus Garvey's Black Star Line, complete with

maican accents. Both groups record the sameng and claim it as their own (Brand Nubian'sAllah and Justice", PRT's "The Nation's Anthem")hen it's obviously a teaching chant for instructg converts into the ABCs of the Five Per Cent

ogma. There are enough other similarities to woner if it's a case of mere coincidence, or whetherrand Nubian based their recording on the earlierRT release. More likely it's a case of the limitedorld view of the Five Per Cent nation producinge same sort of clone-think in all its fanatics. Itn't no mystery.

One thing is certain, these not-so-poor self-

righteous propaganda hacks are, like all Five PerCenters and Black Muslims in general, racist, sexist homophobic (you'll never hear the word "faggot"spit out as a venomous insult as often as you willfrom these two) macho goons: everything, in fact, that is supposed to be the exclusive prerogativewhite males, according to current leftist dogma. So

where's the PC police when you really need them?Probably playing these very records at their calcu-latedly-philadelphic soirees, to display their solidarity with the black struggle.

Buy these records and listen for your self if youthink I'm fronting. Then boycott your local recordstore until they agree to stop carrying all examplesof offensive racist trash. But don't hold yourbreath waiting.

Waco Revelations

The major media and mainstream pundits haveall but forgotten the fiery destruction of the ninety-plus members of the Branch Davidian at the"Ranch Apocalypse" compound in Waco, Texas onApril 19, 1993. Alternative sources, however, haveonly just begun to examine the event, attempt toresolve some of the contradictions news reportsposed and present a truer picture of what actuallyhappened.

Early among these was Incite Information, asmall political newsletter published by libertarianMark Hand out of Washington, DC (six issues/oneyear: $10; POB 326, Arlington, VA 22210). ItsJuly-August issue includes "Licensed to Slaughter,An Examination of Governmental Crimes in Waco"

by John Dingell III, which reviews the actions of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms personnel that led to the deadly blaze. In addition tonoting a failed BATF raid in Tulsa, Oklahoma, twoyears ago, done under a sealed court order likeWaco and failing to uncover any illegal arms asintended, Dingell lists information that has sincebecome regarded as only the most obvious of BATF's faux pas. The BATF concocted the notion, for instance, that Ranch Apo cal ypse had amethamphetamine lab on its premises, as a legalexcuse to engage National Guard helicopters,

which can only be used in drug cases. Despite offi-

cial pronouncements to the contrary, David Koreshcould have been picked up nightclubbing or shopping at any point, making the raid unnecessary.

Dingell's report is not without its contradicions, however. He criticizes the Tulsa media of

being in on the 1991 raid enough to have the cameras rolling as it happened, like Waco, and of not

being there at all. He also reports that the Wacoraid began when " an unarmed BATF agent shothimself accidentally" (italics added) and BATFagents in front "who could not see the accidentaldischarge" responded to the noise it made withgunfire, thinking they were under attack by theBranch Davidians. Dingell notes, however, that theBATF was armed with sound-suppressed H&K MP-5SD submachine guns.

"Licensed to Slaughter" is nevertheless supported in its broad strokes by a series of articlesthat have appeared on various computer BBs byLinda Thompson (America Justice Federation,3850 S. Emerson Avenue, Suite E, Indianapolis,Indiana 46203; 317-780-5204). Thompson and herpartner John Balrd filed a petition to have Koreshrepresented by counsel while he was alive andtrapped in the compound, one of eight such petitions (another perhaps filed by Mark Lane) deniedby the court. Thompson's initial reports documented BATF and FBI abuse of the press, including hergroup's deliberate attempt to cross a road block inside the press area around the Waco compound

to make First and Fourth amendment challengesto the expected arrests. That att empt ended with the release of

Thompson, Baird and a compatriot later discovered to be a paid government informant, beingreleased without charges but slandered in thepress as having been arrested for phony press ID.The one souvenir Thompson retained was a photograph of a BATF agent pointing a MP5 machinegun at them, safety off.

In the aftermath of the Waco conflagration,Linda Thompson's writings have expressed the

extremes of anguish and frustration felt by manyas official U. S. government authority openly murdered the Branch Davidians. "They are not glazedover moonie-type crazies", Thompson asserts of thesurvivors, "They are all well educated, articulate, very nice people. All of them had normal jobs outside the Mt. Carmel Center. None of them believedthey were under David Koresh's "control"'. Sheascribes the charges of child molestation at thecompound as all originating from Mark Breault, arival prophet ousted from the Branch Davidianwho was hired by the ex-husband of a Branchmember to make the allegations during a custody

battle. Thompson also blames the false accusations on pressure from the Cult AwarenessNetwork, headed by the wife of Leo Ryan, the congressman slain at Jonestown. As for the allegations of illegal firearms, Thompson writes, "No, it isnot illegal to own a machine gun in this country.Even if the Branch Davidians had a machine gun,

which it now appears they did not, if it was "illegal'it merely meant that a $200 tax had not been paidon it. All it takes to legally own a machine gun inthis country is to pay a $200 tax and fill out a form4. The BATF is supposed to check that those taxesare paid."

Soldier of Fortune magazine repeats this observation, pointing out too that the warrant cites thelegal definition of a "destructive device", not thelegal prohibition of possessing one without payment of federal taxes, and has reported at lengthabout other defects in the warrants used to beginthe destruction at Waco. In the August 1993 issueof SOF writer James Pate explains of the arrestwarrant that "Child abuse was only one of severalInnuendos...that were irrelevant to the two maincrimes alleged against Koresh over which the ATFhas jurisdiction, those being: the alleged conversion of assault rifles to permit full-automatic fire, and the all eged unlawful ass embl y of handgrenades and pipe bombs". Pate quotes aWashington, DC gun law at tor ney as beingunequivocal that the affidavit did not show probably cause that Koresh and his followers had thenecessary equipment and parts to make theirweapons fully automatic. SOF also notes that in asworn affidavit, one BATF agent claimed thatKoresh made a statement that "the riots in LosAngeles would pale in comparison to what wasgoing to happen in Waco", on April 6, 1992, threeweeks prior to the LA riots.

Finally, the volume published by Feral House,Secret and Suppressed ($12.95, Feral House, POB3466, Portland, OR 97208), contains an even moredetailed view of the bungled BATF raid from Ken

Fawcett, who, along with KGBS radio personalityRon Engleman, set up a satellite dish at Mt.Carmel. From the dish Fawcett videotaped anunedited newsfeed verifying the accidentalweapons discharges described by Dingell, as wellas a catalog of additional ATF offenses, includingits "spray and pray" weapons discharges into thecompound. Fawcett asserts that the video tape—asvolatile as the Rodney King video if the mainstreammedia would take an interest—has been circulatedfor his protection. Linda Thompson may be onesource to tap to get a copy. Feral House publisherAdam Parfrey reports that it's available for free

Parfrey also points out that Mark Richard, atop advisor to Janet Reno during the Waco ordeal, was instrumental in closing an investigation into

the Edwin Wa lke r/L ibyan arms- sale scandal.Readers unfamiliar with Edwin Walker can look tothe latest issue of Back Channels (POB 9, FranklinPark, NJ 00823) for a profile written by editor PeterKross.

Parfrey also notes in the introduction to theSecret and Suppressed chapter on Waco that theaffair gave police agencies ample opportunity totest new microwave weaponry. Linda Thompsonhas also pointed out sightings of tralnloads of UNtanks going into Port land, Orego n. They wereostensibly returning from Somalia but a possibleominous intent seems obvious to anyone followingthe Waco story, certainly to one of the advertisersin Willlamette Week.

On August 16, 1993 USA Today reported thatthe Treasury Department has conducted interviews with federal firearms officials about theBATF raid. Two officials plan to retire.

Inslaw Revisited

A small portion of Danny Casolaro's Octopuswork finally appeared in print, two years after thewriter met an early death while embroiled in itsresearch. The aforemen tioned Secret and Suppressed anthology, documenting the latest badnews in mind-control, power cabals, disinformation and the rest, includes a chapter entitled"Behold A Pale Horse: A Draft of Danny Casolaro'sOctopus Manuscript Proposal", with an Introduction by Steamshovel Press editor Kenn Thomas.

The proposal is taken from a collection of Casolaro's notes for The Octopus, his fictionalizedaccount of the Promis software double-dealing, theCabazon murders, the Nugan Hand scandal, theOctober Surprise, etc. Behold A Pale Horse,Casolaro's first choice for the manuscript's title, echoes the title of William Milton Cooper's magnum UFOpus, Interesting in that both writers hadstrong research Interests in Area 51. ResearcherLars Hansson accused Cooper of plagiarizing thetitle from an earlier novel about gays, but all threeactually follow the same inspiration: Revelation 6:

7-8.

The most significant new development on theInslaw case, however, came in March when retiredfederal judge Nicholas J. Bua, appointed by thenAttorney General William Barr to review the Inslawallegations, filed a report with current AG JanetReno clearing the Justice Department, the officefor which he worked, of wrong-doing in the affair.

News of the report did not surface until late Maybecause, according to the Washington Post, It wasbeing edited to take out information relevant tonational security.

According to Bua, as reported by St. Louts Post Dispatch reporters William Frievogel and StephenCasmier in the Post's June 18, 1993 edition, theevidence was not sufficient to support the claimthat the Justice Department, specifically Ed Meesecrony Earl Brian, stole the Promis software fromWilliam and Nancy Hamilton and sold it illegally topolice agencies around the world. Bua also apparently complimented Michael Riconoscuito's storytelling abilities ("a historical novel; a tale of totalfiction woven against the background of historicalfacts") but poo-pooed his contention that he modified the software to give it a back-door access so itsoutlaw sellers could spy on its outlaw buyers. Buaalso maintains that the removal from the bench of the judge who originally ruled in favor of Inslaw,George Bason, was only a coincidence; Bason wasan inefficient administrator. Finally, according toBua, Danny Casolaro committed suicide and thereis no evidence that the Justice Departmentattempted to influence the investigation of hisdeath.

Not mentioned in the report is the twenty-fivemillion dollars Bua offered Elliot Richardson, attorney of Watergate fame now working for theHamiltons, to settle the case—more than triple theamount awarded in the first federal ruling forInslaw. Joel Bleifuss in the August 9 edition of InThese Times offers these details, as well as highlights from the rebuttal to Bua's report. Forinstance, Bua failed to do a basic code comparisonbetween Promis and the software currently beingused by the FBI, instead relying on the expertise of a Georgetown University professor that such acomparison would be a waste of time. The Inslawrebuttal also maintains that Bua's information onGeorge Bason came in large part from Judge RogerWhelan, the judge from whom administrative problems were inherited by Bason, or so goes theHouse Judiciary Committee Testimony of U. S.District Chief Judge Aubrey Robinson. Whelan atthe time also worked for AT&T, an Inslaw creditor.

Meanwhile, bodies continue pile up around the

case. Jack Anderson was among the first to note

hat Casolaro wasn't the only person pulled intohe murky depths by the tentacles of the Octopus

when he reported on the mysterious death of British journalist Jonathan Moyle. Moyle wasound hanged in his hotel room in Santiago, Chile

after researching U.S. efforts to arm SaddamHussein's Iraq before the Per sian Gulf War,esearch that parallelled Casolaro's. Add to the

mysterious death list the names of Ian Spiro andhis family, who were found murdered in their SanDiego home last November. Spiro reportedlyworked for U.S. and British intelligence agenciesand was talking to Casolaro informant MichaelRiconoscuito up until a few days before his death, according to the March 1 edition of Liberty Lobby'sSpotlight. Guenther Russbacher, anotherRiconoscuito contact, in prison now in partbecause of his claims that he flew George Bush toa Paris October Surprise meeting, reports now onhe suspected murder of his pro-bono attorney,

Paul Wilsher. According to Russbacher, he gaveWilsher videotape proof of his flight with Bush andhortly thereafter Wilsher was found dead on theoilet of his apartment. Details of the

Russbacher /Wilsher story are available on a videoaped interview through Alex Horvat's Argus

Research Foundat ion. The Argus ResearchFoundation also offers its newsletter, The Probe, for$20 annually at POB 1082 St. Charles, MO 63302.

Sherman Skolnick, long-time chairman of the

Citizen's Committ ee to Clean Up the Cour ts,charges that nearly forty witnesses in the Inslawcase have been murdered and complained thatudge Bua failed to show concern over the safety

of other witnesses. He also claimed that a SpecialFederal Grand Jury in Chicago planned to do anend-run around Bua and issue high-level indictments. Skolnick reported that three of the grandury witnesses joined with Riconoscuito to file suitagainst Bua for obstructing the indictments.Skolnick also charges that Bua had an FBI agentnterrogating witnesses who was himself suspected

of murdering Casolaro. The suit apparently Included reference to Robert Booth Nichols, a Casolarocontact with alleged connections to U. S. intelligence as well as the Gambino crime family. On hispopular Chicago phone-line (312- 731-1 100),Skolnick placed blame for the World Trade Towersexplosion on Nichols, characterizing all the suspicion being cast on Arab terrorists as governmentace-bating in the search for enemies. Newsday's

August 3, 1993 edition reports that one of the federal Informants in that case, Emad Salem, surrepitiously recorded his conversations with federal

agents that ostensibly show the FBI's role in insti

gating that plot.Nichols' name appeared again as part of the

legal blow-up between Spy magazine and actorSteven Seagal. Seagal filed a still-pending suitagainst Spy after it printed an article by JohnConnolly, who has done some of the most respected reporting on Inslaw, charging that the actor wasinvolved in attempts to hire ex-intelligence agentsto murder a former screenplay collaborator. One of Connolly's revelations is that Robert Booth Nicholshad a cameo role in Stephen Seagal's movie, Under Setge. In the next issue of Steamshovel Press, researcher Lars Hansson discusses the Seagalcontroversy and it's connection to his researchproject invo lving Bud Cull igan , a man whoseclaims include having killed members of the JFKassassination team in Quatemala in 1965.

JFK Files Released

Media hoopla over the JFK assassination begangain in August with the release of the Lopezeport and other documents as part of the

Assassination Materials Review Act of 1992. Asnoted by Carl Oglesby in Steamshovel PressNumber 7, the Lopez report was commissioned byhe House Select Committee on Assassinations to

determine the veracity of allegations that Oswaldvisited foreign embassies in Mexico City. Someesearchers came to believe that Oswald spent as

much time In Mexico City as he did on the sixthloor of the Texas Book Depository (that is, none atll). The 400-plus page report, written by investigaor Edwin Lopez but not available even to himefore this release, provides a detailed account of

which claims about the Mexico City scenario havemerit, which are bogus, and it makes some intersting new claims, all of which have been distortedo unrecognizable dimensions by the new wave of

media interest. The best place to get the real scoop on the

Lopez report, and a worthy cause to support ingeneral, is the Assassination Archives andResearch Center. Center director Jim Lesar was inevidence in the newspapers and on television during this recent flap doing his best to ask questionsthat reveal the Importance about the report. Was itOswald at the Cuban embassy in Mexico City? Wasit Oswald some of the time and someone else someof the other time? Was one of the ostensible contacts of Oswald, Sylvia Duran, an intelligenceagent? AARC makes a full copy of the report available for $55 to its members and for a slightly higher fee for non-members. It costs a tax-deductible$25 a year to join AARC at 918 F Street NW. Room510, Washington DC 20004, 202-393-1917.

Moreover, Lesar makes several good points thatwent virtual ly unrepo rted: the overwh elmingmajo rity of doc um ent s cov ere d by the

Assassinations Material Review Act have not yetbeen transferred to the National Archives. The FBIhas not turned over a single page. The CIA is withholding 160,000 pages in violation of the law. Also, why has President Clinton's administration onlynow after long delay appointed just four of the five-member review board as required by the Act? Thedelay in unconscionable as the AssassinationMaterials Review Act gives the board only twoyears to complete its business.

According to Lesar, the review board has twofundamental decisions to make: 1. to determine

what actually constitutes an assassination record(by late September the definition had included over275 transcripts of Lyndon Johnson's phone conversations during the weeks following the assassination held by the Johnson library in Austin); and2. to review the withholdings made by the variousagencies to determine if more information shouldbe released. AARC plans to produce a regularnewsletter to report upon developments with theAssassinations Material Review Act and to helppursue and promote legal redress for the assassination, although Lesar is skeptical of calling for a

special prosecutor for all the reasons noted inSteamshovel Press Number Eight. The effort forsuch a call, also as noted last issue, has not developed into anything formal, according to CarlOglesby, the assassination scholar conscripted asits chair. Oglesby is still open to discuss it ,though, at 617-876-6558 or through the mail 294Harvard Street #3, Cambridge, Massachusetts02139.

The thirtieth anniversary of the assassinationis otherwise being met with the usual plethora of good and bad books. The most interesting of theformer category include the memoir of Marita

Lorenz and a book by HSCA investigator GaetonFonzi, both unavailable at press time for review.Unfortunately, the chief "bad" category book, CaseClosed by Gerald Posner, is only too available, having been excerpted in US News and World Report. The book is a compendium of obsfucation, easilydefeated "medical" evidence (especially with regard

to the single-bullet theory), and other widely disseminated disinformation that even non-researchers and non-buffs should readily laughoff.

Posner even offers the Umbrella Man-as-NevllleChamberlain-protest theory in all seriousness,

calling the umbrella a widely under-J H h | stood protest symbol. Readers of

*JP Pv National Review during that time£ j may have unders tood it, as the

magazine often used the umbrellasymbol when it perceived appease

ment to the Soviets on some foreignpolicy issue. It is just as likely, however, that National Review usedits intelligence community contactsto get an Umbrella Man on Elm asan advertisement as it is that hewas finally taking his stand onJoseph Kennedy's support of NevilleChamberlain! Strangely, use of theUmbrella Man symbol stopped afterthe assassination, an eventdescribed by the magazineat the time as an "awesome

and splendid ritual of death". In a note toGus Russo, JFK researcher Bob Harrissummed up the career of The National

Review's William Buckley succinctly: "CIAofficial in Tokyo and Mexico City (soundfamiliar?); worked under Allen Dulles foryears: first man brought to Mexico City byHoward Hunt...in 1950 as Nazi exiles areformed into U. S. assets... 1952-3 assists in

creation of H. L. Hunt's "Facts Forum"; familmoney overlaps with Rockefeller's Socony Mobifounded National Review; family owned PantepacOil, employers of George DeMohrenschildt.Coudert Brothers, Buckley family law firm, represented Schlumberger Corp., several members OAand the Nazi occupational Vichy government."

Harris, by the way, has been involved alongwith Jane Rusconi, Director of Research for theOliver Stone movie, in creating a CD-ROM hypertext including the complete Warren Commissionand HSCA reports and hordes of other dataEntitled ZCI Encyclopedia of the JFK Assassination(Who Shot JFK?), ($29.95), the disc will be madeavailable by ZCI Publishing, The Informat, 1950Stemmons, SUite 6048, Dallas, TX 75207-3109. Itwas unavailable at press time but will be reviewein the next issue of Steamshovel. (No comment onGus Russo's current research efforts.)

In any event, Posner was recently caught upshort in his arguments on Crossfire by CyrWecht, although the supposedly widely divergentviews of Michael Kinsley and John Sununu oncagain coincided with the verdict of "no conspiracy".

Although it breaks little new ground,Shapolsky Books does currently offer a good current review of the assassination by James R. Duff($14.95; Shapolsky Publishers, Inc., 136 West22nd Street, New York, NY 10011) entitled Wh

Killed JFK? It includes an introduction by Senator Alfonse D'Amato anhigh praise from Mafia-did-it theorists David Scheim and John HDavis. Another Shapolsky offeringThe Mafia, CIA & George Bush bPete Brewton, follows the Mafia linthrough the Bush presidency withthorough analysis and documentation. Yet another Shapolsky offeringThe Crimes of President, by JoelBainerman ($5.50) not only furtherdocuments the criminal abuses of theBush administration—including the

almost utterly hushed-up Iran-contra related planecrash in Gander, Newfoundland in 1985—but alsocontains an entire chapter on the story of BClinton's cover-up of the drugs-and-gun runningoperation at the airstrip in Mena, Arkansas.Shapolsky offers also a less convincing book entitled Target America: Terrorism In the U. S. Today($5.99) by Yossef Bodansky, which seems designedto appeal to the same Arab-bashing mentality theAmerican state seems to want to encourage.

A Green ConspiracyBY WAYNE HENDERSON

Few things, these days, seem more Importantto certain people than being "politically correct",adopting the stale vanilla language of theinoffensive, and most of all embracing "Green"politics. Far be it from me to denounce a good, ecologically oriented mindset—it's sorely needed—but can we really trust the "Green Movement"? Is ita coalition of disparate left-oriented proles bent onsaving the planet, or the tip of a much moresinister iceberg?I've done a minor amount of digging along those lines and have unearthed somerather startling inconsistencies in the Green left.

Take, for example, the Fourth WorldWilderness Congress, which took place fromSeptember 11 to 18, 1987. One participant, a Mr.George Hunt, was inte rvi ewed by TheMoneychanger (formerly Gold & Silver Update) inits December 1987 issue:

"London banker Baron Edmund de Rothschildwas at the meeting for six days...personallyconducting the monetary matters and creation of this World Conservation Bank (WCB], in thecompany of I. Michael Sweatman of the RoyalBank of Canada...also, David Rockefeller [of Chase

Manhattan Bank] was there, and gave a speech onSunday...I think a lot of those Greenies weresponsored to be there. It was a contrivedconference. So I called around and it turned outthat the FINDHORN GROUP in Loveland, Colorado, were the official hosts..."

Now, I'll be the first to admit that the presenceof a few people normally identified with the moniedelite doesn't automatically mean conspiracy —it isentirely possible that there are in positions of power some few individuals with more than apassing concern for the state of the earth. Merelyto point at the guest list of a Green gathering andshout "Aha!" doesn't cut the mustard. It's when westart delving into the actual business of the "Greengathering" that my interest is piqued:

"They're planning on re-financing, debtswapping [for assets] one trillion dollars of ThirdWorld debt into this new World ConservationBank...The WCB will be enacted by the UnitedNations, and will need to be approved, I think, byevery country participating. Let's assume that oursenators and representatives allow this thing to

happen: then the bank will be endowed with[roughly] 30% of the earth's surface...[the

participating governments] will give title to thelands to the World Wilderness Land InventoryTrust. It will be entrusted...Then the WCB wilhave the power to act as a world central bank. Itcan create soft currencies [currencies good onlwithin the country of iss uance] , not hardcurrencies [those which can be used

internationally]...but...the soft currencies[according to the WCB scenario as out forward bythe confer ence] can be spent outside forenvironmental and ecological equipment..."—G.Hunt, ibid.

Even an armchair economist can see what theWCB would mean—at last, an operational OneWorld Bank that would hold, after only a brieamount of time, title deed to the majority of theearth's land surface. Now the debt would hardlyeffect First and Second World governments—theoverwhelming majority of which are but fronts.forthe international banking clique, anyway; norwould Third World governments likely boverwhelmingly affected, either, as they exist solelat the pleasure of the banking cartel. The realvictims of such a scheme as the WCB presentswould be those outside the actual boardrooms andcorridors of power, a description that, I think, covers, 99% of the readers of this 'zine (intelligenceagency employees excluded).

"...World Bank loans, as they stand now, arenot collateralized; now they're entering into a newera of loan collateralization. They're stating, "Okay, the next step is we want collateral, so that whenwe loan-swap this debt, we're going to own theAmazon if you default. ..as [Brazilian FinanceMinistry official Dr. Jose Pedro] de Oliveira-Costasaid, they're not going to be able to pay thaoff..."—G. Hunt, ibid.

What we have here, in plain English, is ascheme to monetize land—the WCB would act, inconcert with the World Bank and the InternationalMonetary Fund [IMF], as the world's banker, andout of such a system would grow a one-world fiat

currency system, placed in the hands of preciselythose individuals who would benefit most fromsuch a system, the international money-elite.

Not that this is an unprecedented move. Sincethe early part of this century, our monetary systemhere in the US has been In the hands of what iscalled the Federal reserve System, a shady groupthat has, since its inception as the financial powerhere, increased prices on consumer goods 1200%.There's been a fair amount of speculation as towh o actually owns this Federal ReserveSystem...the Federal Reserve Act of 1913 providesthat the names of the owner-banks must be kept

cret. However, I have been fortunate enough tond, via an unnamed but reliable source, a list of e eight banks that actually "own" our currency:

1. Rothschild Banks, London and Berlin2. Lazard Freres Bank of Paris3. Israel Moses Self Banks of Italy4. Lehman Brothers Bank of New York 5. Warburg Banks of Hamburg and Amsterdam6. Kuhn, Loeb Bank of New York 7. Chase-Manhattan Bank of New York 8. Goldman, Sachs Bank of New York

Currently, at least one-third of Latin America'sport earnings, taken as a whole, are devoted to

aying the interest on a debt of roughly $400llion to these very banks (though the "fiction' isat these loans are from the US, in reality the US

overnment merely guarantees the loan, meaningat if the debtor nations default—as theyentually must—the US people will be responsibler the debt—if you think this is impossible, nsole yourself with that thought when the S&Lilout is reflected in you "tax debt')...Brazil, sincee Wilderness Conference cited above, has made aal to ameliorate the terms of its various loans, inturn for allowing international Interference with

development of the Amazon—perhaps on thery terms spelled out by Rockefeller and

othschild (Chase-Manhattan and Rothschildanks) at the conference? One thing is certain:ith the state of Third-World economy being whatis, someone will end up holding title deed to

ose lands, and a great many other lands besides-d someone, in this instance, would appear to bee same monied interests that were so much inidence at the World Wilderness Conference.

"...they're going to be in back of the bank aning currency and cash flow to the WCB to keep

alive, to give it the appearance of ofitability...the bank will be running on an

crual basis. On paper it will be recognizingofits received on interest, but the interest willOT be coming in because these countries can'ty...my hypothesis is that the...capitalists and

oneychangers.. .will be in back of this bank in thesition of creditors..."

The WCB is, essentially, the Federal Reserveheme raised to the Nth power, on anernational scale; not only will the world's cash-pply be controlled (as it is now, by the World

ank and IMF), but the land-area as well, by theCB; while there is scant chance at financial

curity, let alone gain, in the current economicmate (making revolutionary change very hard),

there is at least the opportunity, a thin thread of hope, in land-ownership, the ability to meet one'sown needs through one's own labor, to be at leastmildly independent of the whims of the marketeconomy. Once the WCB is in full operation, landitself—the only remaining means of "opting out', of dis-attaching, will be gone, and rapidly. The"Green" complexion of such a WCB would appealto the "sheeple', the Politically Correct Greens andSemi-Greens, especially in today's climate—many, many otherwise well-intentioned people can betalked into switching their old mortgage into asubsidiary of WCB, under any number of pretexts—willingly surrendering control of theirhomes to the international banking cartel, perhapsin exchange for (apparently) lower rates and the"feelgood' of doing business with what appears tobe a "Green" institution.

Such a scheme also dovetails beautifully withthe elite's fear of real revolutionary movements. Aguerilla band, hiding out in the rainforest a la CheGuevera, would find themselves trespassing onprivate property, hence subject to search anddestruction by a private security force under norestraints (as if the current lot are anything tocrow about); combined with the current disarmament hysteria (the move to remove firearmsfrom the citizenry under the banner of a "war ondrugs') and recent moves to more tightly controlthe flow of currency into and out of the US, we seea clear pattern of encirclement. Moves in theSenate and Congress are currently aimed atremoving all "large currency' ($100 bills) from thehands of citizens here—again, it's part of the "waron drugs' package—such is the nature of what is aclassic pincer movement, in three prongs:

1.: remove all private ownership of land,allowing the bank's security forces to "sanitize'trespassers in any way they see fit;

2.: remove all offensive—and even defensive—

firearms from the people, rendering them unable toresist; and3.: remove all actual wealth from the people,

rendering them unable to either "opt-out' of thesystem (by moving themselves and their earningsfrom direct control into an "underground'economy), or to purchase 'illegal' firearms in anattempt to wrest back control of their lives.

"Individuals who have decided that theoperations of the government are not compatiblewith their own status as free and sovereign citizensmay decide to 'drop out'—not all of them arecriminals. Some have simply realized that an

enemy need not speak a foreign language. Theyregard themselves as citizens of an occupied land, and as such wish to give no aid or assistance totheir rulers..." Full Disclosure magazine #15, pg.13.

Not only are the elite attempting to scarf up theland; there will always be those holdouts who will,

under whatever circumstances, retain theirproperty as long as possible; these few might evenmake a go of it! Such a scenario can hardly appealto the monied interests. As such, thosetechnologies that we normally see as "user-friendly", those intended to free us from, forinstance, the energy (electricity) monopoly, arebeing bought up by those same interests at analarming rate. Most wind-energy technology is nowin the hands of the oil companies, and varioussolar-power suppliers are now following suit:Sun works, Inc. of NJ and Revere Copper of NY are

now owned by ASARCO (American Smelting andRefining); Solarflex is now owned by Amoco(Standard Oil of Indiana), In conjunction with tworelated European firms; ARCO owns NorthrupSolar and Energy Conversion Devices, Inc.; Exxonhas acquired Solar Power Corp. and Daystar Corp.;Mobile-Tyco solar is now the property of Mobil Oiland Solar Energy Systems of Delaware is now

owned by Shell Oil.For years we've been content to moan and wail

the "slow erosion' of our rights—the left hasbecome, in essence, a mutual whining society, nothing more. All the while, as we've cracked wiseabout Proudhon and Kropotkin, those whom weclaim to oppose have been quietly, carefully,

removing the last few barriers to total domination, rendering resistance futile. No more "Green" politics. To hell with being

"Politically Correct". From this point henceforward,I, for one, will trust no Greens—with the possibleexception of the earth Firstlers and related artistsof ecotage. Theory is fine and dandy, but ourenemies are playing for keeps.

T HE HIGH A N DTHE MIGHTY:

FK, M P N , LSD &THE CIA

BY G. J . KRUPEY

EGEND OF A MIND...

In the spring of 1962. Timothy Leary, thearvard psychology professor who was even thencoming famous as an advocate of psychedelicugs, notably LSD, was sitting in his office whenbecame aware of a presence. That presence wasattractive blonde woman in her late thirties

aning provocatively in the doorway and staringoldly at him. Leary later described her blue-greenyes as "piercing" and he features as "arrogant, stocratic". (1) This was a woman, obviously, whoew what she wanted and was used to getting it.hat she wanted from Timothy Leary was knowlge on how to run an LSD session.

She had an important friend in Washingtonho was intrigued by what he had heard aboutSD, including her own experiences with theind-expanding chemical. Her important friendanted to try LSD, and the woman was there toarn how to properly guide him through the cosic thoroughfares according to the Leary model of oper set and setting.

When Leary suggested that she and her impor

nt friend simply came back up to Harvard andhim conduct the trip for them, she insisted thatch a thing was impossible.

Her friend was a public figure who could neveridentified with such activity. When Leary offered

s opinion that people in power were far from thest subjects for an LSD experience, Mary, as hissitor called herself, asked him if he didn't think at powerful men turning on with their wivesd /or girlfriends might not be able to turnound many of the destructive tendencies power

men were noted for, such as waging war andpecially the threat of nuclear war, which thenemed a likely possibility, if not a certainty. Leary

agreed, to an extent. Everything else had failed, surely something else, something new was calledfor; LSD might be it. But after more questioning,Mary had to confront Leary with his naivete. Heobviously had no idea what he had gotten himself into, or who he was up against. When Leary conceded that he had heard rumors about the LSDexperiments conducted by the military, Mary toldhim: "It's time you learned more. chology, and drugs in particular. These people playhardball, Timothy. They want us to use drugs forwarfare, for espionage, for brainwashing, for control...but there are people like me who want to usedrugs for peace, not for war, to make people's livesbetter." (2) When Leary asked Mary for the identities of her coconspirators in crusading for peacethrough chemistry, she simply told him:

"Women...Washington, like every other capitalcity In the world, is run by men. These men conspiring for power can only be changed by women. And you're going to help us." (3) The mysteriouswoman who claimed to have powerful Washingtonfriends and belonged to a cabal of proto-feminlstacldhead peaceniks was Mary Pinchot Meyer, aprodigal child of the upper class. She was a Vassargirl, a Washington socialite and an abstract

painter. She was the niece of Gifford Pinchot,Forestry Service head under Teddy Roosevelt andgovernor of Pennsylvania in the 1920s and 1930s.She was the sis ter- in-law of the Washingtonbureau chief of Newsweek and later editor of theWashington Post, Benjamin C. Bradlee, and one of her best friends from her Vassar days was marriedto James Jesus Angleton, the CIA's chief of counter-intelligence. She herself was the formerwife of Cord Meyer, Jr., one of the earliest CIAemployees. And the VIP whom she wanted to initiate Into the mysteries of LSD, the powerful publicfigure whom she dared not bring to see Leary atHarvard, was, so Leary later concluded, her lover,

the President of the Unit ed States, John F.Kennedy. (4) Of all JFK's girlfriends, Mary Meyerwas, according to some sources, the one he wasmost in love with, the only one for whom he waswilling to divorce Jacqueline. (5) And if what MaryMeyer told Timothy Leary was true, then it is possible that her story, far from being peripheral, maywell be the pivotal point in the assassination of JFK.

The story of the CIA's interest in, and experimentation with, LSD, is by now a familiar one, although it was one of the more shocking—andweird—revelations of Agency shenanigans thatcame about in the post-Watergate house cleaning(i.e., damage control), especially to a generation of young Americans, many of whom equated drop

ping acid with some sort of transcendentally revolutionary act that was against everything the CIArepresented. In fact, the histories of both LSD andthe CIA were oddly coincident and weirdly symbiotic, like two bizarre, mutual parasites feeding off each other. In 1947, when the CIA was foundedfrom the spare parts of the wartime Office of Strategic Services (OSS). LSD was still gatheringdust in the labs of the Swiss pharmaceutical firmSandoz, where it had been synthesized in 1938,but not tested (and then accidentally, by Its "creator". Dr. Albert Hoffman) until 1943. In the same

year as the CIA's birth. Dr. Hoffman published hisfindings on the drug, and in 1949, LSD first cameto the USA via experiments at Boston PsychopathicHospital. In 1953, with the initiation of Project MK-ULTRA, also known as Operation Mind control, theCIA began to view LSD as a possible "truth serum",a magical elixir that would force even the toughestand most reluctant captured enemy agents to blowcover and gladly spill the beans.

The idea was not unique to the CIA. The OSShad similar high hopes for marijuana as the ultimate TD (Truth Drug) as early as 1942. But OSSscientists determined that Mary Jane was a ficklelady whose effects varied from one individual toanother. (Rumor had it that "Donovan'sDreamers"—so named after General William "WildBill" Donovan, the Wall Street lawyer and WorldWar one hero who founded the OSS and alsohelped later to found the CIA— were reluctant togive up the guinea pig role.) (6)

In the banner year of 1947, when the CIA wascreated along with the National Security Act'sother sweeping changes In the military structure to

accommodate the new Cold War paranoia, thepage 54

JACQUELINE.

Navy's Project Chatter, working on similar ideas asthe OSS, felt confident that they had found theelusive philosopher's stone that would transmutebase lies and disinformation into golden truththrough mescaline, the synthetic extract of thepsychedelic peyote cactus. As with much otherpost-war technological research, the impetus forthe Navy's research came from earlier Nazi experiments conducted upon unwilling inmates at theDachau concentration camps, conducted with all

the finesse and concern for human life that couldbe expected from the Third Reich. It was an inauspicious precedent to follow, as the various militaryand CIA mind control experiments would prove tobe often as brutal and callous. Despite the factthat the Nazi scientists who conducted the experiments concluded that it was "impossible to Imposeone's will on another person...even when thestrongest dose of mescaline had been given", (7)the Navy kept CHATTERing on until 1953, thesame year that the CIA drew various of Its mindcontrol experiments, including everything from

hypnosis to lobotomy to ESP research togetherunder the MK-ULTRA umbrella. (8)

Within the next twenty years, until the CIA presumably shut down the MK-ULTRA operation (9),the CIA tested a variety of mind-altering drugs, especially LSD, on countless human guinea pigs, most of whom were completely unaware of what itwas that was being tested on them. Soldiers, prisoners, and mental patients were all among theunwitting. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, theCIA financed research projects on LSD throughcivilian "cut-outs" or front groups to various universities and hospitals. Many heads-to-be wouldbe introduced to the politics of ecstasy by participating in voluntary experiments. Most of themwould have disbelieved the idea that the CIA wassecretly funding these trials had they been told, but often the shrinks and professors who ran theprograms did not know they were working for theCIA either, the money being tunneled to experimenters through CIA conduits like the JosiahMacy, Jr. Foundation, the Geshickter Fund forMedical Research, and the Human Ecology Fund.(10)

FINAL OFFER from the Evolutionary Level Above HumanThe following statements could sound very presumptuous. However, these facts do come into focus or "provThey could also sound very "doomsdayish." Though, in truth, they will be the most joyous "sound of music"

• The Earth's present "civilization" is about to berecycled - "spaded under." Its inhabitants are refusingto evolve. The "weeds" have taken over the garden anddisturbed its usefulness beyond repair

• The human kingdom wascreated

as a stepping stone between the animal kingdom and the trueKingdom of God (the Evolutionary Kingdom Level AboveHuman)• It is the soul that progresses from one kingdomlevel to another - each kingdom level has its own uniquephysical containers (bodies) for the souls that reside inthat kingdom level.• As the human goes out to find servants within theanimal kingdom, from beasts of burden to seeing-eyedogs - if that animal grows to find pleasure only inserving its master, no longer identities as an animal, butsees itself as a family member in that human family, andits behavior is pleasing to that human - the two become

bound together. The human family then provides thebody (a human infant) for that soul to enter, allowing itto move up into the human evolutionary kingdom. (Thisis not to suggest that all human infants are containersfor souls moving up from the animal kingdom, for mosthuman infants are containers for human kingdomreturnees still bound to that family unit.)• Likewise, when a member of the true Kingdom of God receives instruction to incarnate among humans inorder to seek out the souls that might want to "separatefrom the pack" and are desirous of becoming onlyservants in the Evolutionary Level Above Human, Hethen offers them the knowledge and behavior that canopen that door to them. It that human changes to thedegree that he no longer desires any human behaviorand he pleases that member of the Kingdom LevelAbove Human, a bond is formed and a body belongingto that new Kingdom is provided tor that soul to moveup into.• Both Kingdom Levels are physical and biological. However, the human kingdom is made up of mammalian- "seed-bearing" - plants or containers, while theKingdom of God is made up of non-mammalian, non-seed-bearing "containers" for souls, and their young or"children" are those who have risen above - overcome -all human-mammalian characteristics and behaviorthrough the tutorship (midwiting) of a member of theKingdom of God who has been through that transitionand bonded to His Father at a previous time• Just as an animal sees his human tutor as the one

and only "master," likewise a human, as he becomesaware of a Member of the Kingdom Level Above Human, sees Him as the one and only "God." However, theindividual that that human related to as God seesHimself as a "child" in that higher, many-memberedKingdom and knows that only through His "Father" (anOlder Member in that Kingdom) can He become a bettermember in that Kingdom

• A "student" or prospective "child" of a member of the true Kingdom of God can, with the help of an OlderMember, overcome or rise out ol all human mammalianbehavior - sexuality and gender consciousness - and allother addictions and ties of the human kingdom. Hemust complete this change to the point of abhorringhuman behavior before his soul can become a "match"with a biological body of the true Kingdom of God - torthat new body is genderless and incapable of functioning at a human level• The true Kingdom of God, the "Headquarters" of allthat is, is a many-membered Kingdom which physicallyexists in the highest, most distant Heaven - a non-

temporal place [outside of time, and with eternal life). It is the only place from which souls, life, and all

creating originates. Being non-temporal, it was, is,and forever will be - a concept that we, as temporalcreatures, are not designed to comprehend. ThatKingdom designed the "temporal" world outside its"borders" and designed its temporal creatures to havea progression of bodies or "vehicles" (through

kingdom levels, such as animal and human) for soulsto evolve through. If the soul survives and movesforward through all its tests along the way - it can, with the help of a member of the true Kingdom of God,lose its temporal characteristics and become a part of their non-perishable, non-corruptible world. However,

all other souls who reach a certain degree of corruption(having of their own free will chosen to become totallyseparate from their Creator) will engage a "self-destruct" mechanism at the Age's end, manifestedwhen opposing camps, be they human or "Luciferian,"come together and destroy each other - thus assistingin the plowing under of the "garden" forthe Creator.• The reason the term "TRUE" Kingdom of God isused repeatedly is because there are many space alienraces that through the centuries of this civilization (andin civilizations prior) have represented themselves tohumans as "Gods." We refer to them collectively as"Luciferians," for their ancestors fell away from thekeeping of the true Kingdom of God many thousands of years ago. They are not genderless - they still need toreproduce. They are nothing more than technicallyadvanced humans who have retained some of whatthey learned while in the early training of members of the true Kingdom of God, e.g., limited space-timetravel, telepathic communication, advanced travelhardware (spacecrafts, etc.), increased longevity, advanced genetic engineering, and such things assuspended holograms (as used in some religious"miracles").• These "Luciferian" space races are the humans'GREATEST ENEMY. They hold humans in unknownslavery only to fulfill their own needs. They cannot"create," though they develop races and biologicalcontainers through genetic manipulation andhybridization. They even try to "make deals" withhuman governments to permit them (the Luciferians) toengage in biological experimentation (throughabductions) in exchange for technically advanced modesof travel - though they seldom follow through, for theydon't want the humans of this civilization to grow to beanother element of competition. They war amongthemselves over the spoils of this planet and usereligion and increased sexual behavior to keep humans"drugged" and ignorant (In darkness) while thinkingthey are in God's keeping. These Luciferians see to it,through the "social norm" (the largest Luciferian "cult"there is) that man continues to not avail himself of thepossibility of advancing beyond human. Many thingshave become the accepted "norm," but that doesn'tmake them right!• Just as the biological body is the "container" for thesoul, the soul is the "container" for Mind (Spirit). Mind translates into the brain as information (knowledge).Information is available to humans from only twosources - the mind of the Luciferians - or the Mind of

the Kingdom of God. The mind ot the Luciferians yieldsmisinformation (promoting the behavior and conceptsof this world). The MindUom the true Kingdom of Godyields true information (though the Luciferians and theirservants would reverse this interpretation). As we

change, in the progression of overcoming humanness -the percentages change - of which mind occupies oursoul - Truth increases as misinformation decreases. If we revert back to humanness, the process reverses -the Truth is aborted as the soul becomes more filledwith mammalian mind. That Truth can even be takenfrom us if we abuse it. When our "eye becomes single"or our soul is filled only with Mind or Spirit from the

true Kingdom of God, it becomes pure or Holy Mind (Spirit).• The true Kingdom of God's design permits thepresence of a "Luciferian" element, during a humancivilization, as a catalyst for growth. Without it, wewould have no choices - our free will could not beexercised. Our right choices find us in alignment torecognize the Truth when it is offered.

• Two thousand years ago, the true Kingdom of Gappointed an Older Member to send His "Son," alongwith some of their beginning students, to incarnate onthis garden. While on Earth as an "away team" withtheir "Captain," they were to work on their overcomingof humanness and tell the civilization they were visitinghow the true Kingdom of God can be entered. Thehumans under the control of the Luciferians killed the"Captain" and his crew, because of the "blasphemous"position they held, and quickly turned the teachings ofthe "Captain" - the Older Member's "Son" - intowatered down Country Club religion - obscuringremnants of the Truth.• That same "away team" incarnated again in the1970's in the mature (adult) bodies that had been pickedand prepped for this current mission. This time the"Admiral" (the Older Member, or Father, incarnate in afemale vehicle) came with the Son - "Captain" - and hiscrew. As the two Older Members put out a "statement"and held public meetings over about a 9-month periodin 1975-76 to bring their crew together, the mediatagged them the "UFO cult" because of their expectationof leaving aboard a spacecraft (UFO) at the completionof their "overcoming." The two Older Members thenwent into seclusion with their crew (students), "liftingthem out" of the world for almost 17 years (notaccepting any new students), making Earth's surfacetheir classroom. This isolation was absolutelynecessary. The degree of their overcoming of saddictions, and ties to the human environment had to betaken to the point of matching the behavior andconsciousness of the Evolutionary Kingdom AboveHuman. Only then would their new "Next Level" bodiesbe functional. They resurfaced briefly for about amonth period in 1992, allowing some ot their"dropouts" to rejoin them.• This changeover (sufficient "overcoming" toNext Level bodies) has been completed, andthey return, they are instructed to share this statementwith you.• The Luciferians are about to be "recycled"(annihilated) at the same time as this human civilizationis "spaded." They know that "rumor has it" that theirdays are numbered. They refuse to believe it and aredesperate to recruit souls from the human kingdom intotheir "Heavenly Kingdom." There are many "counterfeit''heavens, and each "heaven" is at this time collecting"names in their book," forcing a stand of allegiance, polarizing each individual's commitment to his chosen"God."• When members of the Level Above Human arephysically present, the opposing forces work the hardestagainst them in order 1o support their own positionThey do almost anything to keep humans from followingthe path toward the true Kingdom of God. They "turnthe heat" at this time in the area of mammalian behavior,

primarily sexuality. This has become such anoverwhelming presence in the Earth's atmosphere thateven some of the crew that came with us were lost totemptation. Don't forget that when the Luciferians wereexpelled, in order to support their own desires, they hadto condemn the true Kingdom of God and see it simas another path - inhumane and radicallyuncompromising.• The religious "cults" who have separated troworld have "picked up on" one major aspect of what "in the air" at this time when the information of howmove from one kingdom level to another is available. What they may have failed to recognize is thatexperienced "clinicians" are necessary to take soulsthrough that "weaning" - that difficult "withdrawal" fromhuman addictions and binding "misinformation"concepts. If it weren't necessary to have clinicianspresent who have previously been taken ttransition, we wouldn't need to be here. Some religious"cults" might have children, participate in physical ormental abuse, hold members against their will, have

or any other communist country, and would passon any Information they received regarding LSDresearch in the communist block. (14) It was thisfear of Russian acid subversion that lead the CIAo attempt to corner the LSD market, spurred on

by the Incorrect estimate from the military attache.(15)

Then, in 1954, something happened that mayindeed have allowed the Agency to corner the market. The CIA had asked the Eli Lilly Company of Indianapolis, to try and make synthetic LSD. The Lilly scientists succeeded less than a year later, although they did not publiclyannounce their breakthrough foranother five years, in deference tothe CIA's wishes. As far as theywere concerned, it was to be

regarded as top secret that theynow had access to "tonnage quantities" of LSD. (16)

Lilly ended up selling all theLSD they manufactured to the CIA,the Army, or the Air For ce.Between the three of them, theyhad enough by the mid-fifties, toturn on every man, woman, andchild in the nation. But, when theCIA officer who wrote the memo toAllen Dulles advising that the CIAkeep secret its new found ability to manufacture asmuch LSD as it wanted also admitted that the CIAonly intended to use It In small-scale covert operations, and already could easily acquire the smallamounts needed, what then could they have possibly needed with so much acid?

One of the most bizarre and sleazy of the CIA'sLSD test programs was Operation MidnightClimax, conducted for the Agency by a Federalnarc, George Hunter White. A high-ranking agentof the New York office of the Bureau of Narcotics

and Dangerous Drugs (now the Drug EnforcementAdministration), White had worked for the CIA'sparent agency the OSS during the Second WorldWar, overseeing the efforts to test marijuana as atruth drug. In this capacity. White had testedcigarettes soaked in concentrated liquid cannabison volunteers under the auspices of theManhattan Project, and suspected communist soldiers, as well as on gangster August del Gracio, aconfederate of Lucky Luciano.

White's role In these escapades was discovered

by Dr. Sidney Gottlieb, the chemist who oversawthe MK-ULTRA project, while perusing old OSS

records. White had returned to narcotics work after the war, and was something of a minorcelebrity in New York, known for his grandstanding busts (among whom was legendary jazz singerBillie Holliday) covered by newsmen tipped off inadvance. He was more than happy to help out theCIA, although he seems to personally have held alow opinion of the boys from Langley, regardingthem as Ivy League fops who hired others (likehimself) to do the dirty work. (17)

Posing under the alias of "MorganHall", a sailor and painter, Whiteleased two adjacent "pads" (as he himself always called them) in aGreenwich Village apartment house. He would lure marks to one pad wherethey would be slipped acid or someother drug (including the OSS mari

juana extract and knock-out drops)while CIA technicians In the next doorapartment recorded what transpiredon film and audio tape through two-way mirrors. In 1955, White wastransferred to head the San FranciscoNarcotics Bureau office, and he took the CIA project with him. White foundanother hep pad on Telegraph Hill, one which he lavishly outfitted. Aswell as the standard next-door listening post behind the two-way mirrors,

the pad was bugged with state-of-the-art microphones disguised as electric wall outlets. Whiteeven had his own kinky private observation post, aportable toilet with a two-way mirror where thealcoholic narc would perch and take in the funwhile partaking from a pitcher of chilled martinisthat he always kept In the pad's refrigerator. Whitehad the pad decorated with "Toulouse-Lautrecposters, a picture of a French cancan dancer, andphotos of manacled women in black stockings."(18) If the effect was to replicate what somebody,White no doubt, thought a cheap bordello in Parisor Marseilles must look like, it was no accident. The MK-ULTRA Frisco safehouse was developed tobe a clandestine whorehouse, where the spookscould not only observe and record the effects of LSD on unwitting subjects, but also, through careful, dispassionate scientific scrutiny (of course),the antics of spaced-out Johns in the embrace of professional prostitutes, to develop a technique of sexpionage (yet another arcane field where the CIAfeared the Russians were ahead in the game, asthey may well have been, If the later Profumo scandal in England In the early 1960s was any indication).

White recruited prostitutes, most of them drugddicts, through his assistant Ike Feldman, whoosed as an East Coast pimp. White paid theomen $100 a night plus chits that served as "get-ut-of-jail-free" cards that could be used when and

they were busted by the local fuzz in the line of uty. (19)

But White and his boys must have gottenored with the voyeur's scene in the safehouse, foroon they were hitting the streets of San Franciscon search of other prey, dropping acid in the drinksf the unsuspecting in bars, restaurants, andther public places. The scientific accuracy of suchxperimental procedures is dubious, to say theast, as most often the poor saps chosen to beuinea pigs in this manner wouldften vanish into the crowd, nooubt to wander the streets in high

nxiety, convinced they had lostheir minds. Since White recordedw positive trips among those givencid in the safehouse, it would beafe to assume that his randomreet victims fared even worse. Thisropensity towards bad trips led

White to dub LSD "stormy". (20)

White's Frisco safehouse soonecame the locus for even crazierxperiments . "If we were scarednough of a drug not to test it outn ourselves, we sent it to Sanrancisco", one CIA scientist said.21) If the white-coats at Langley

were often reluctant to play the rolef lab rat, White and his pals had nouch qualms. "Sometimes after a tough day on theeat he invited his narc buddies up to one of theafehouses for a little 'R&R'. Occasionally theynzipped their inhibitions and partied on theremises—much to the chagrin of the neighbors,ho began to complain about men with guns in

houlder straps chasing after women in variousates of undress. Needless to say, there was

lways plenty of dope around, and the feds samled everything from hashish to LSD." (22) So

George White had been experienced after all. Inct, his own acid trips seemed to have been moreacific than those of his victims, although they lefto lasting Impression upon him. "I did feel at timeske I was having a 'mind-expanding experience'ut this vanished like a dream immediately afterhe session", he later explained. (23) White's safe-ouse overlooking the Golden Gate was such a rip-

oaring success that he soon opened a branch

office across the bay in Marin County, at that timestill a fairly isolated area. The house was on thebeach, and it was here that the practical jokersmasquerading as scientists in the CIA's TechnicalServices Staff sent the fruits of their latestresearch for trial, including: "stink bombs, itchingand sneezing powders, and diarrhea inducers", as

well as " a mechanical launcher that could throw afoul-smelling object 100 yards, glass ampules thatcould be stepped on in a crowd to release...powders, a fine hypodermic needle to inject drugsthrough the cork in a wine bottle, and a drug-coated swizzle stick." (24) The scientific geniuses whoconcocted these devastating weapons must havebeen recruited from Johnson Smith, the novelty

company that used to advertise inthe back of old comic books. It wasalso at this Marin safehouse that twoCIA psychologists lured severalstran gers to a part y where theyattempted to spray the gatheredguests with aerosol LSD. But since itwas a hot day, the windows had beenopened, and the LSD gas dissipatedinto the breeze. (25) Despite the slapstick tinge that seemed to attach tothis and a few other episodes in thesaga of the MK-ULTRA safehouses, itwas no laughing matter. There wereeven those at the CIA who found thewhole situation outrageous. In 1963,John Earman, Inspector General of the CIA, discovered the project anddemanded it be shut down (a thirdsafehouse had been opened, orreopened, in New York, but it was

not under White's supervision). Earman's objections were of both a practical and a moral nature, and although Richard Helms admitted that he hadno answer for Earman's moral objections, the thendeputy director for covert operations and initiatorof the MK-ULTRA program (and later director of

the CIA from 1966-73), insisted that the safehouses were justified in order to "keep up with Sovietadvances in this field." (26)

Helms managed to stall the closings of thesafehouses for two years from the time Earmanbrought the subject up to Director John McCone, mainly by not telling the full story to McCone,Kennedy's replacement for Allen Dulles, Helms'mentor. Despite this, the safehouses were closeddown in 1965 in San Francisco and 1966 in NewYork. Oddly enough, Helms didn't reactivate the

program (as far as is known, at least) when heassumed the job of director in 1966. But by then,

November 22,1993, marks the end of the third decade of questions about the assassination of President John F.

Kennedy and the numerous mysteries that continue to elude researchers, journalists, historians and popular

writers. Since its inception in 1991, the Assassination Symposium on Kennedy (ASK) has provided an

opportunity for concerned citizens and researchers from across the U.S. and around the world to lay out their

individual pieces of the puzzle. Co-sponsored by The Texas Observer, ASK hopes to be a vehicle to allow those

pieces to come together in a manner that can facilitate finding truth as well as spotlighting needed changes in

government policy and procedures. On the 30th Anniversary of this international tragedy, more people than ever

before will convene at Dallas' Hyatt Regency Hotel, just blocks from Dealey Plaza, for the 1993 Assassination

Symposium. They will be privy to four days of all new panel discussions, eyewitness testimony, first-hand

accounts and other presentations, including a keynote speech by Norman Mai ler, whose book on Lee Harvey

Oswald will be released in 1994. The ASK Mart will feature a wide variety of displays and merchandise, including

many of the newest books in the field, some of which can be autographed on the spot by the author. Registrants

will also be able to participate in other special events related to assassination research and the anniversary

observation. Fees are $125 if postmarked by September 28; $150 if postmarked by October 27 and $175 walkup.

Announcing!e N e w 1994? Fla±lajxd Catalocf

7'AXIEN N AT I O NThis year's F L AT L A N D # 1 0 focuses on UFOs &

AXIENS and has some intriguing features:• Bo Gritz Interrogated by Adam Parfrey (Feral House press ), in whi ch Gritz, the most

highly decorated Green Beret commander who served in Vietnam and the modelfor Sylvester Stallone's character in Rambo (and possibly Marlon Brando's Col.Kurtz in Apocalypse Now), discusses the role of the CIA in drug traff icking sinceWWII through 'Na m to Iran Contra, new evidence on wh y Amer ican POWs maystill be alive in Laos, the Kennedy Assassination, Jonestown, Central America, theMossad, and Satanic Abductions. Gritz ran for President on the post-Duke PopulistParty. He collected nearly 100,000 votes nationally in 1992.

• The New Master Machine Race by Jerome Eden, wh o has published many books on the work of the lateWilhelm Reich, MD , and has been a UFO researcher, radica l public school teacher, and cloudbusteroperator with 28 years experience. His perspective on inhuman alieninvaders incorporates Reich's last published work, Contact with Space.Eden's analysis of the character of these aliens draws a picture of cold, emotionless egg-heads who somehow need Earth (and us) for theirown vitality.

• The New Blue Fascism by Peter Nasselstein, from Hamburg, Germany. Nasselstein'serudite discussion of "energetic" Blue Fascism (as differentiated from the "Black Fascism" of Nazi Germany and "Red Fascism" of Stalinist Russia). Blue is thecolor of life energy, orgone. Blue Fascism is the distortion of orgonomy by theemotional plague. The article is an uncompromising, critical look at New Ageism, "bod ywor k", Gurdjieff, Rajneesh, occ ulti sm, wester n yog a , Leary.Jonestown, all couched in a shocking argument that UFOs are functioning likethe T-Bacilli (or "cancer microbes ") in an en erge tica lly decaying cosmicatmosphere, the natural product of a dying galaxy. Nasselstein views BlueFascism as an augur of apocalypse.

• Mark Lane on Murder in Memphis, interviewed by Kenn Thomas, of SteamshovelPress, who finds out what's new in Lane and Gregory's update of Code Named

Zorro. Thomas tries to pin down the popular conspiracy author on details of hisconnection with Jim Jones and Jonestown.

• Incorrect Political Memoir by Daniel Brandt, in which one of America's most responsible and productiveresearchers into the intelligence community answers his critics, including Chip Berlet, whoostracize Brandt and anyone else failing to conform to their twisted PC standards. While Berlet hasgained prominence as an investigator into the right wing 's "wooing" of the left, as in LyndonLaRouche and other "cult" groups, his own relationship with the ADL scandal has now been openly
