STC-Group: Leading educational and research institute for the shipping, logistics, transport and port industries

The STC-Group is a leading educational and research institu-tion for the shipping, logistics, transport and port industries. It offers interesting, challenging courses with a practical focus at the secondary and tertiary levels (including preparatory vocational education, senior secondary vocational education and higher professional education under the Dutch system, and Master’s-level courses). Its comprehensive core programme also includes training courses, consultancy and applied research. Headquartered in Rotterdam, the organisation also operates several other branch offices across the Netherlands, as well as in Vietnam, South Africa, the Philippines, Brazil and Oman. The STC-Group – which has operations worldwide, including Kazakhstan – is the largest provider of training and education in Europe in its field, and more than 50 per cent of all students in the Netherlands focused on or employed in these areas pursue training at the STC-Group.

Providing maximum access to knowledge

The STC-Group gathers, develops, innovates, manages and distributes knowledge in a way that allows businesses,

participants and students to get maximum benefit, with the unique and most sophisticated simulation park in the world, training centres and practical training offered by the STC-Group all being key contributors. I hear and I forget...

While hearing and seeing leads to fleeting, temporary knowledge, doing and experiencing is what makes the difference in acquiring the right skills. The STC-Group is convinced that this approach works best. Students are only properly trained once they have attained the right combi-nation of knowledge, skills and appropriate behaviour. This applies both to younger employees who are just starting out in their careers and to experienced workers looking to maintain their professional knowledge or advance their careers. The STC-Group therefore offers both knowledge transfer in the form of classes and coursework and a stimulating practical and simulation environment in which partici-pants and students are given the opportunity to acquire substantial relevant experience.

STC-Group:Gathering, developing and providing access to knowledge

Public and private education

The STC-Group includes both a public and a private division. The Shipping and Transport College(preparatory secondary vocational education and senior secondary vocational education under the Dutch system) and the Netherlands Maritime Univer-sity (full-time and part-time Master’s courses) offer courses accredited by the Dutch government. Where necessary, the diplomas and certificates also comply with international standards, including those set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the International Labour Organization (ILO). STC-Group Holding B.V. organises all activities and projects not funded by the Dutch government, inclu-ding training and refresher courses, consultancy, andresearch on a global scale.

Shipping and Transport College Under the banner of the Shipping and Transport College (STC), the STC-Group offers preparatory secondary vocational education (VMBO) and senior secondary vocational education (MBO) courses under the Dutch system. The STC’s preparatory secondary vocational education/VMBO section is the largest technical programme of its kind in the Netherlands, offering a broad spectrum of courses related to shipping, shipbuilding/maritime technology, trans-port, and the port industry. The STC is rated highly by the government, the business community and students alike, and the STC-Group is the only educa-tion provider in the Netherlands to have been awarded the title of “Professional Shipping and Logistics Institution” from the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science.

The STC serves the entire maritime industry and related sectors, including the following categories: navigation, hydraulic engineering, fishery, offshore, inland navigation, ports, logistics, road transport, rail transport, aviation, shipping and yacht construction,

and the processing industry. The courses are offered at several different sites located in Rotterdam, Brielle, Stellendam, Zwolle and Katwijk in the Netherlands.

Rotterdam Mainport UniversityThe STC-Group and Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences have partnered so as to be able to provide the best higher vocational education courses in Rotter-dam for shipping, shipbuilding, ports, logistics and the processing industry. They currently offer four exce-llent, fast-growing higher vocational courses under the name Rotterdam Mainport University of Applied Sciences (RMU).

Netherlands Maritime University Established in 2006 by the STC-Group, Netherlands Maritime University (STC-NMU) offers a unique Master’s programme: the Master’s in Shipping and Transport. This management programme is designed to meet the needs of professionals operating in the maritime and port-logistics sector who wish to increase their know-ledge and improve their skills (including management skills). The highly competitive Master’s course, which is available on both a part-time and full-time basis, attracts students from all over the world, who, on graduation, have their pick of some of the most coveted jobs in the maritime and port industries.

The STC-Group Holding B.V. has stakes in several interna-tional companies, including STC B.V., which provides corpo-rate training and courses for companies, institutions and private individuals. In addition, STC B.V. also provides consul-tancy services and applied research for the shipping, port, logistics and transport industries and the port-industrial complex. STC B.V. employs more than 140 professionals who manage and explore education and research issues.

STC-Events, a division of STC B.V., organises conferences, meetings, conventions and other events, for which it uses the STC-Group’s unique facilities. The leading training and expertise centre for safety and offshore training, courses and other training, STC-KNRM is a partnership between the STC-Group and the Royal Nether-lands Sea Rescue Organisation (KNRM).

Close ties to the business community

Each sector has its own Industry Committee or Sector Committee including representatives of employers’ and employees’ organisations from the various industries.

The Master’s programme has its own Academic Council. These committees advise and support the STC-Group in relation to its courses at the senior secondary vocational education, higher vocational education and Master’s levels. In addition, the STC-Group also maintains an Advisory Board, which is comprised of all the chairpersons of the Industry Committees and Sector Committees.

The Advisory Board provides advice on cross-sectoral issues. This guarantees commitment on the part of the business community, promotes permanent innovation and improve-ment of courses and training programmes, and provides pupils, participants and students with a significant advantage when entering the job market.

International activities

Rather than limiting its scope to the Netherlands and Europe, the STC-Group actively shares its knowledge and experience with others all over the world. It does this both independently and – on a regular basis – in partnership with organisations such as the World Bank, the European Union and the Asian Development Bank. Our global network enables us to contri-bute significantly to the global labour market for transport in all its facets. The STC-Group operates branch offices in South Africa (two locations), Brazil, Oman, the Philippines and Vietnam (three locations). Employees at these branch offices operate on the basis of a quality label, accreditation by national governments, targeted inspections and international recognition/accreditation.

STC-Southern Africa Pty Ltd. (STC-SA) offers training in Johannesburg (where the head office is located) and Cape Town, as well as conducting research and managing consul-tancy projects serving the transport sector in Sub-Saharan

Africa. Its specialisations include maritime pilot training, tug-master training and training for maritime traffic control-lers and port captains. The STC SA Table Bay Campus training centre, which opened in 2011 and is located at the foot of the Table Mountain near Cape Town, completes the range of courses by offering even more training and educational opportunities. The Table Bay Campus focuses mainly onnavigation and logistics (including port logistics).

Founded in 2005, IMCO (International Maritime College Oman) is a joint venture between the Oman government and the STC-Group. IMCO offers Bachelor’s-level courses for navigation (helmsman and marine engineer), logistics (including port logistics) and the processing industry. It is the only educational institution in the Gulf Region to offer this package for navigation, logistics and the port-based proces-sing industry.

STC-Brasil was founded with the objective of offering high-quality training programmes in South America in the industries in which the STC-Group operates. The courses are being implemented gradually and will eventually serve all educational levels, ranging from secondary education (comparable to senior secondary vocational education [MBO] in the Netherlands) toMaster’s-level courses. STC-Brasil also serves other South American countries with its training programmes.

The STC-Group has operated in Vietnam since 1993, and currently operates three branch offices in this country, which has a fast-growing economy. In the south of the country, the STC-Group has entered into a joint venture with Transport University in Ho Chi Minh City: the MaritimeEducation and Human Resource Center, UT-STC. UT-STC provides all nautical courses and training for officers of theglobal fleet, as well as supplying all seafarers to the

international merchant fleet and managing crewing and manning operations for a large number of shipping companies.

STC-Vietnam is the name of the branch office in Hanoi which is responsible mainly for programming activities, visual database development and scenario development for simula-tors.

The Ho Chi Minh City branch office, which opened in 2011, focuses on ports, terminals, inland navigation and logistics and is known as Tancang-STC. The STC-Group has partnered here with the Saigon New Port Company – the largest terminaloperator in Vietnam – to provide mainly courses and training related to the port and logistics industries.

In conjunction with the Royal Dutch Shipowners’ Association (KVNR), the STC-Group supports a maritime academy in the Philippines, as well as managing a nautical training centre there, the Netherlands Shipping Training Centre (NSTC). This centre, located in Palompon, provides maritime courses and practical nautical training in accordance with the guide-lines of the STCW Convention (International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers) and supplies hundreds of young officers to the Dutch merchant navy each year.

Continuous innovation

One of the ways in which the STC-Group has achieved its strong market position is by continuously innovating and improving its education and training programmes. The STC-BIRD (Bureau of Innovation, Research & Develop-ment) ensures that all knowledge infrastructure, course materials, interactive software, simulators and practical training feature all the latest innovations.

Simulation park and training centresI hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I under-stand. It is through this educational principle that the STC-Group sets itself apart from many other training and educational institutions. Whereas other providers merely offer knowledge, we use simulators, practical labs, training centres, prototype facilities and training ships to create a safe and interactive training environment that simulates real-life situations as accurately as possible.

The STC-Group has invested tens of millions of euros in recent years in developing new simulators and upgrading existing ones. Thanks to these investments, the Group currently boasts the largest and most specialised simulation park in the world for navigation, transport, ports, offshore, logistics and the port-industrial complex.

The STC-Group’s simulation park consists of:
