Rec Post delivers news about recreation events and happenings, sports club profiles, helpful maps - bike maps, park maps, suggested walking and running trails - volunteer opportunities, updates on parks upgrades and facilities, information from local recreation businesses, as well as a storyboard for sharing
Walking Council is making Marrickville more pedestrian-friendly, and has partnered with the Heart Foundation to host walking groups in the local area.
The groups vary as to intensity, and duration and some welcome dog walkers. One group is based in Newtown, three meet at Steele Park, and one at Wooli Creek. For more information about walking groups, or to register, contact [email protected] or call 9335 2191.

Bird-watchingVolunteer bird watching group, Tempe Birdos, came together in November 2011 and since then has met monthly for an early morning bird walk and survey at the Tempe Lands site andTempe Reserve. Cooks River An urban waterway that has riverside walkways and cycle paths, parks and facilities and an abundance of native flora and fauna. Over recent years, the condition of the river has been much improved.cooksriver.org.au
GreenWayis a green corridor which connects the Cooks River in Earlwood with Iron Cove at Haberfield. The GreenWay hosts a number of sustainability and biodiversity projects as well as vibrant and diverse community arts events throughout the year.greenway.org.au/

Sustainable StreetsVerges, also known as nature-strips, are important areas of public land that have the potential to provide ecosystem services and help create more liveable spaces. Council’s Sustainable Streets program encourages and provides advice on verge gardening.

The Art Seat Located in Newtown Square, the Art Centre provides local, emerging and established artists with a space where experimental and non-commercial art can be showcased.

Marrickville Youth Resource Centre Located in Jarvie Park opposite Marrickville High School, the centre offers a variety of services for young people aged 12 to 24 years. myrc.org.au
The Green Living Centre A sustainability resource centre in King Street Newtown dedicated to growing a culture of environmental sustainability. The centre is free and open to the public and offers a variety of services such as a library, free workshops, practical ideas for everyday sustainable living, educational and business programs. Parks and reserves Marrickville Council’s parks and reserves provide a wide variety of passive and active recreational opportunities for people of all ages – including children’s playgrounds, sports fields, off- leash dog areas and picnic areas.
Walking the DogCouncil has off-leash dog exercise areas, some on a full time basis and others on a time-share basis. To find out where dogs can be exercised off leash, go to marrickville.nsw.gov.au/en/community/community-services/pets-and-animals/dogs/dog-exercise-areas/ Dog walkers must clean up after their dogs, and ensure their dog is under effective control at all times.
Jack Shanaham Reserve Better known as Dulwich Hill Skate Park, the reserve provides skate boarders with a skating facility that accommodates for a range of skating abilities and uses. The park has a number of other facilities including a basketball court, tennis court and mountain bike track.
Tempe Reserve and Tempe Lands Home to the Robyn Webster Indoor Sports Centre, Cooks River Motor Boat Club, sports grounds, netball courts, cricket nets, playground, BBQ and sheltered picnic area, Cooks River Cycle Path, extensive wetlands and the Cooks River Valley Garden – a secret native garden.

Council’s Sport and Aquatic Facilities This includes the Annette Kellerman Aquatic Centre in Enmore Park with 50-metre pool, learn-to-swim and leisure pools, a cafe, multi-purpose room/crèche, and a wellness centre with fitness and gym facilities and Fanny Durack Aquatic Centre in Petersham. The Debbie and Abbey Borgia Recreation Centre in Marrickville South is a multi-purpose recreational complex located at Steel Park in Marrickville South.
Waterplay Park, Marrickville South This fun summertime playground for children is located in Steel Park. It features water fountains and sprinklers, and also demonstrates the water cycle in action.
Council LibrariesCouncil’s libraries have books and magazines for borrowing or browsing, and regular events such as morning teas, author talks, exhibitions, children’s and adult’s classes, workshops, lectures, computer and internet access, multicultural services, and a Home Library Service. Chrissie Cotter Gallery Located in Pidcock Street Camperdown is Council’s gallery space utilised for exhibitions and cultural events. When in use, gallery opening hours are Thursday to Sunday, 11am–4pm. Entry is free and the gallery is wheelchair accessible.

Shopping, dining, entertainmentKing Street, Newtown is the longest and most complete commercial precinct of late Victorian and Federation period in Australia. It’s home to hundreds of cafes, clothing stores, restaurants, bookshops, galleries, pubs, and quirky retail.
Enmore Road, Newtown has been reborn as a foodie hot spot where small bars, craft beer, great gelato, and fine dining are all proliferating alongside the second-hand stores, take-away outlets and random assortment of retailers and hairdressers - and the iconic Enmore Theatre.
Marrickville Road and IllawarraRoad, Marrickville, haveretained their Mediterraneanheritage and now also have a strong Vietnamese influence. The result is an eclectic assortment of major supermarkets, fresh fruit and vegetables, continental delicatessens, ethnic butchers, fresh seafood, and specialist retailers such as haberdashery. It’s home to the State and Federal electorate offices, Marrickville Town Hall, and Marrickville Library. The shopping strip also extends south along Illawarra Road, past the railway station.
Marrickville Road and New Canterbury Road, Dulwich Hill, is full of ethnically-diverse cafés and restaurants, food outlets and shops. The outdoor seating on widened footpaths creates a cosmopolitan atmosphere. Nearby is Dulwich Hill Library, and Seaview Street Hall. Public transport is frequent and parking is very easy.
Living LanesWilford Lane, Newtown is Council’s first Living Lane. Council installed porous paving, rain gardens and a communal garden area. Residents have taken over maintenance of thegreen space including planting, maintenance, artwork and potential community events.
Kays Avenue, Dulwich Hill has also been transformed into a green and environmentally-friendly space with rain gardens, native plant landscaping, and heritage paving.
Wilga Avenue, Dulwich Hill Is an award-winning sustainability showpiece created by the residents who have turned verges into vegetable and herbs gardens complete with fruit trees and communal compost bins. They keep chickens and collect rainwater to further reduce their environmental impact.
Car shareMarrickville Council is committed to increasing the uptake of car sharing as part of its drive to reduce greenhouse emissions, reduce on-street parking demand and encourage more active lifestyles via reduced dependency of the private car.
Light Rail An extension of the Sydneylight rail network was completed in early 2014. Light rail Services now operate from Central to Dulwich Hill via nine new stops located in Leichardt and Lewisham.
