including the world-renowned Valderrama at number 2, and another equally sumptuous newcomer at Finca Cortesin, now home to the Volvo World Matchplay Championship.

MIJAS GOLFDISTANCE FROM CLC CLUB LA COSTA WORLD 7.4 KM

Mijas Golf is among the most popular golf complexes in Europe, known for the outstanding condition of its courses as well as the friendly atmosphere and excellent service provided to clients. The courses: Los Lagos and Los Olivos, both designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr., are in the valley of Mijas, north of Fuengirola. Los Olivos, suitable for players of high technical ability and precision, was sympathetically refurbished in 2012. It has many trees and is the smaller of the two with narrow fairways and elevated greens. The gentle outlines of Los Lagos course, with its wide fairways, bunkers and nine lakes, contrasts with the stunning appearance of its Puente Bola - “Bridge-ball” feature, a visual landmark for this course, which is suitable for handicap players.

EL CHAPARRAL GOLF CLUBDISTANCE FROM CLC CLUB LA COSTA WORLD 4.5 KM

Designed by Pepe Gancedo, this is the only course on the Costa del Sol where par 3s, par 4s and par 5s feature in equal numbers. Over its 6,000m length, El Chaparral offers a beautifully attractive playing environment with pine trees lining most fairways and wonderful sea and mountain views as the backdrop. Known locally as a challenging course, the 18-hole layout is varied and calls for accurate, controlled shotmaking and a sensible approach to putting on beautifully prepared greens. Buggies are equipped with GPS systems and there is a fully-equipped practice area and a floodlit driving range.

CALANOVA GOLF CLUBDISTANCE FROM CLC CLUB LA COSTA WORLD 9.9 KM

Midpoint between Malaga airport and Marbella, Calanova is a spectacular 18-hole, par 72, course set in the Mijas Valley. A hilly course with elevated tees and undulated greens, it is designed to test golfers of all abilities with a water hazard to watch out for at the 18th. Members and visitors alike compliment the condition and speed of the greens. Fabulous views of the coast and mountains accompany play. The Golf Academy is headed by Monty Bordelon, with over 15 years experience in golf tuition at all levels. A PGA Pro in America, he played the Tour for three years. The clubhouse has a restaurant, with terrace overlooking the putting green and sea, and a Pro Shop.

CABOPINO GOLFDISTANCE FROM CLC CLUB LA COSTA WORLD 12 KM

At 5,194m, Cabopino offers a slightly shorter golfing option, but the wonderful panoramic views more than make up for the loss of a few metres! This is a course where players will benefit from careful positioning to avoid trouble on both sides of most fairways. With a variety of water features adding to the challenge, as well as the enjoyment, this compact course is always fun to play. The distinctive third hole features one of the most iconic tee-shots on the coast, while the surprisingly difficult fifth – an apparently innocuous par 4 of just 378m – is exceptionally narrow and perilous for all but the straightest of hitters!

LA CALA GOLF & COUNTRY CLUBDISTANCE FROM CLC CLUB LA COSTA WORLD 13 KM

Three superb 18-hole courses and a David Leadbetter Golf Academy combine to make La Cala the most expansive golf resort in Andalucia. Cabell Robinson’s designs on the America (6,009m), Asia (5,925m) and Europa (6,014m) courses offer three distinctly different golfing challenges, all set amid amazing mountain scenery and with views over the Mediterranean. On all three courses, the undulating topography, narrow fairways – and a river that is in play on 8 holes of the Europa – call for concentration and accuracy, with a strategic approach usually better rewarded than sheer power and distance. Manicured greens are renowned for tricky downhill putts that seem to carry all the way down to the sea!

ALHAURÍN GOLFDISTANCE FROM CLC CLUB LA COSTA WORLD 22.5 KM

Designed by the legendary player Severiano Ballesteros, the inland course, easily reached from the coast, is a challenging one for all who like to put their skills to the test and entertaining for middle and high handicaps. Opened in 1993, the 18 hole, par 72 course with mountain views, attracts golfers from across Europe. The first nine holes stretch along the mountain and the undulating layout of the second nine enables a more attacking style of play. There is a nine hole par 3 course and practice area, ideal for novices. The practice area has a chipping green, putting green and a driving range that is more than 300 metres long. The hilltop clubhouse has a restaurant, with dining and drinking terrace, a Pro shop and facilities.

LAURO GOLFDISTANCE FROM CLC CLUB LA COSTA WORLD 27.7 KM

Designed by the late Folco Nardi, Lauro was extended from 18 to 27 holes, creating a nine-hole course, by Mariano Benitez following the same lines and requiring the same level of concentration and skills. Technically challenging, Lauro’s holes are playable in three combinations, all par 72. This is a course for nature lovers, verdant with trees and with a variety of small wildlife, even eagles seen flying overhead. There are 14 lakes and the course being moderately flat is playable on foot, but with two holes located on the side of a mountain with spectacular views over the Guadalhorce Valley and the Mediterranean. The ‘Cortijo’ style clubhouse has a central patio where food and drinks can be enjoyed.

CLUB GUADALHORCE GOLFDISTANCE FROM CLC CLUB LA COSTA WORLD 36 KM

Designed by Finnish architect Kosti Kuronnen, Guadalhorce is a par 72, long course, suitable for major tournaments, that can be enjoyed by players of all levels. The first nine holes are over gentle slopes and valleys and are easily tackled on foot. The entire course is surrounded by trees and the second nine holes are dotted with various lakes. The 354-metre 6th has an elevated and treacherously undulating green, though it can still be reached quite easily in 2. Quite another story is the 8th hole, a par-4 and handicap 2, which measures 429 metres and shares the complicated 6th hole green, making arriving in 2 strokes on this hole quite a challenge. There is a 9-hole practice green, ideal for children and beginners, and two charming rest areas by holes 7 and 9.

EL PARAISO GOLF CLUBDISTANCE FROM CLC CLUB LA COSTA WORLD 38 KM

This Gary Player designed course - opened in 1973 - is one of the oldest on the coast and enjoys the stunning backdrop of the iconic ‘La Concha’ mountain. Players come back year after year to test their skills against one of southern Spain’s best championship course layouts, and the clubhouse atmosphere is among the friendliest available. The course takes in some beautiful sea and mountain panoramas and offers a good test that is at the same time fair to all handicaps and abilities. El Paraiso’s walkable fairways are lined with an assortment of mature trees and flowering bushes, while criss-crossing streams flow into two magnificent lakes.
