Facebook• “a social utility that connects people with friends and others

who work, study and live around them. People use Facebook to keep up with friends, upload an unlimited number of photos, share links and videos, and learn more about the people they meet” (Facebook, n.d.)

Why is social media important?• Data trends are showing that social media usage is increasing• More of our students will be utilizing social media

• Institutions are increasingly utilizing social media as a means to reach out to engage students

• Social media is a coping mechanism for students who are undergoing transitions (first year students especially)

Social Media, Students, and Us• We need to meet students where they are• They are not really on Google Hangout, but are more likely to be

tweeting about OSU’s victory• Even when they are at a physical place they are not always there

(mobile phones)• Challenge and support extends outside the classroom• It doesn’t end at the login page• Cognitive dissonance can occur not just face to face, but through

a myriad of ways

Institutional responsibility• Most institutions have an online presence• How many of your offices have an online presence (Facebook,

Twitter, etc)? • How many of you interact with students on those platforms? • Institutions have a responsibility to respond to their students
