A NEW LEAF IN INDIAN RETAILING

Today, topping the Global Retail Development Index for the third consecutive year as the most attractive market for retail investment, India has one of the most vibrant retail sectors in the world, where huge malls and supermarket chains co-exist with below-the-line traders.

Currently, there are 12 million retail outlets in India, which is estimated to triple by 2015. The 25 per cent projected increase in retail growth illustrates the strong fundamentals of the sector, which is expected to contribute to 22 per cent of India's GDP by 2010. The fastest growing segments in retail are, not surprisingly, wholesale cash-and-carry stores, supermarkets, and hypermarkets. Shopping malls are another growth segment, with over 100 malls in the country now and over 600 malls under construction - mostly in Mumbai, Delhi and other A1-class cities.

One of the key challenges of the Indian market is to build organised retail. Concepts like franchising are only now gaining currency, and I recall the tremendous effort that had to be put in even in the late '90s to build a fashion retail chain through international franchises.

The mindset of the typical Indian customer, however, has shifted over the years. Today, global brands have high visibility and awareness among urban customers, who drive the organised retail sector.

This change was relatively slow and has only hastened now with the economy gaining momentum. Reports show that the retail sector grew from US$198 billion in 2001 to US$226 billion in 2005 - a modest 14 per cent growth. However, the organised retail sector grew by 93 per cent from US$3.96 billion to US$7.68 billion in the same period, though its share of the total grew modestly from 2 per cent to 3.4 per cent.

It is estimated that in the next three years, over US$560 million will be invested in retail sector expansion in the country - resulting in 50 hypermarkets, 305 large department stores, 1,500 supermarkets and 10,000 exclusive retail showrooms. At least one-third of the multi-brand outlets are projected to be converted to exclusive outlets.

Retailing sector is the second largest employer in the country with almost over 12 million retail outlets in India and only 4% of them being larger than 500 square feet in size. Although retailing in India is fairly fragmented, organized retailing is gaining momentum rapidly growing at almost 25-30% per annum and is forecasted to touch a figure of Rs I,50,000 crore by 2010. The economy is projected to grow at 8.1% in 2005-2006 having grown at a steady pace of around 6% over the last 10 years.

Organized retailers are the contemporary formats by which shoppers have the edge of a world class shopping experience. Fine examples of these formats are Pantaloon, Shoppers Stop and Trent. Organized retail may broadly be classified into the following formats-

Page 4: STATUS OF EXCLUSIVE STORES IN INDIA

Malls The largest form of organized retiling today. Malls are located mainly in metro cities, in proximity to urban outskirts, this format ranges from approximately 60,000 sq ft to 7,00,000 sq ft and above. They lend an ideal shopping experience with an amalgamation of product, service and entertainment, all under a common roof.

Hypermarkets They are typically large, starting from 40,000sq. ft plus are usually located outside the city limits. This format comprises of a multiple division layout, and usually has an" industrial- look" interior. Hypermarkets generally provide daily necessities and grocery like items. Pricing is competitive and they also offer volume discounts.

MBO's Multi Brand outlets, also known as Category Killers, offer several brands across a single product category. These usually do well in busy market places and Metros.

Super Markets Large self service outlets, catering to varied shopper needs are termed as Super markets. These are located in or near residential high streets. These stores today contribute to 30% of all food & grocery organized retail sales. Super Markets can further be classified in to mini supermarkets typically 1,000 sq ft to 2,000 sq ft and large supermarkets ranging from a size of 3,500 sq ft to 5,000 sq ft. having a strong focus on food & grocery and personal sales.

Discount Stores As the name suggests, discount stores or factory outlets, offer discounts on the MRP through selling in bulk reaching economies of scale or excess stock left over at the season. The product category can range from a variety of perishable/ non perishable goods.

Convenience Stores These are relatively small stores 400-2,000 sq. feet located near residential areas. They stock a limited range of high-turnover convenience products and are usually open for extended periods during the day, seven days a week. Prices are slightly higher due to the convenience premium.

Departmental Store Large stores ranging from 20000-50000 sq. ft, catering to a variety of consumer needs. Further classified into localized departments such as clothing, toys, home, groceries, etc.

Exclusive Store Ranging from a size of 500 sq ft to 5,000 sq ft. & above, this format is owned/ managed by the Company or through its franchise. These can offer single brand as well as multiple bands.

Specialty Store These formats focus on a specific product category, Medium sized layout in strategic location. Specialty stores provide a large variety base for the consumers to choose from.

FASTRACK TO CROSS 50 EXCLUSIVE STORES BY APRIL 2010

Fastrack, a fashion accessories brand from Titan Industries Ltd, is mulling to take the number of its exclusive stores to 50 across the country by April 2010, majority of them through franchise model.According to Fastrack vice president and head Ronnie Talati, most of the outlets would be operated on franchise model with an investment of Rs 40-50 lakh, and a floor space of 400sqft

“Since the launch of our first exclusive Fastrack store in Pune, the brand has received tremendous response in Vizag, Chennai, Bangalore, Bhubaneshwar, Thane and Nashik with Fastrack stores. With the launch of new stores at Begumpet and Himayatnagar in Hyderabad, we now have 13 Fastrack exclusive stores and seven kiosks,” Talati added.

The perspective plan envisages setting up of 50 stores in the country by April 2010 and then expands this further to a chain of over 100 outlets by next year. “We have set up a few of these stores as demonstration points and receive enquires for new stores. In fact, several of the dealers of Titan stores are keen to set up Fastrack stores,” Talati told reporters on the launch of two new stores in Hyderabad.

“Finding a right place to set up a store is a key challenge for us. Once we do so, we are able to roll it out soon. The choice of location of a store is also dependent on how fast we can secure a property. With the slowdown in the real estate market, we see opportunities. However, finding a store of 400 to 600 ft in larger malls takes time,” said Talati.

The brand, whose mainstay is watches and sunglasses, forayed into accessories like belts, hats and bags this year and expects to reach a sales figure of Rs 360 crore with a growth rate of 25 per cent over last year.

“With the expansion of products in the Fastrack stores, covering accessories, most stores are breaking even within the very first year of operation as against our initial estimates of two years. The sales revenues from accessories would contribute 15-20 per cent to our revenues over the next five years," said Talati.

The brand would roll out more designs and models of various accessories like bags, belts, and leatherettes every month, Talati said, adding that they have no intention of bringing foreign brands to India.
