Terms To KnowSample – set of things about which you

collect data.

Data Set – the information you collect.

Sample Size – the size of the data set.

When Do People Collect Data?When people choose a sample to collect data,

it is because there is some sort of uncertainty about the data.

If you are sure of the data, then there is no need to collect them.

Example:You would not ask students whether they have

a nose or whether they woke up this morning.But you might collect data on what color their

eyes are or how much they slept last night.

Choosing A Data RepresentationThe type of data you have determines the

possible ways to display them. When you ask people what color their eyes are,

the answers are separated into categories.Data that can be sorted in this way are called

categorical data.If the sample size is small, you can list all the

data.If the sample size is large, data should be

summarized and displayed.
