CENTRAL AMERICAN PORT STATISTICAL SUMMARY, YEAR 2013

The Central American Commission of Maritime Transport (COCATRAM) takes pleasure in presenting

to the maritime port community of the Central American Isthmus, the Summary of Maritime Port

Statistics of the Year 2013, as tool of decision-making and research in the subsector.

COCATRAM structures the Statistical Summary in two parts, the first one composed by three

sections: Cargo, Vessels and Containers briefly approaching the principal aspects of port

performance of the Central American region during the year 2013. The second part present annexes

with the statistical tables consolidating the regional information.

The principal source of information is Companies and Port Authorities of the region that compile

their national statistics, through the members of the Central American Maritime and Port Network

Statistics, working since the year 2000 and coordinated by COCATRAM.

The source of information comes from forty-five foreign trade ports, operated by state and private

companies in Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama. The three

sections, that shape the first part of the Summary, present general information related to traffic of

cargo, vessels and containers by port and country. It also considers total volume of foreign trade,

type of cargo and vessels and container size.

In this edition, information related to origin and destination is omitted because usually take longer

to compile and process producing delays in the edition of the summary. In the next months,

COCATRAM will publish a supplementary document with the above-mentioned information.

COCATRAM, Port Operators and Port Authorities of the Central American Isthmus will continue

working together in support of their commitment to accomplish this yearly document, aware of the

great importance that implies.

1. Cargo Throughput

1.1. Cargo throughput by country and port In 2013, the cargo throughput at the Central American region was 134.78 million MT, an increase of 3.4 million MT or 3.3% over 2012. Despite the increase in cargo volume, growth slowed down from previous years when it was

double digit (11.7% for 2010-2011 and 12.1% for 2011-2012). The absolute increase in those periods compared with 2013 was 12.2 million MT in 2010-2011 and 14.0 million MT in 2011-2012.

Chart No.1 Cargo throughput at C.A. by country (Thousands of MT, %), 2013

In 2013, about 75.8 million MT was offloaded along the Central American isthmus, -0.4% less than the year before, while 58.9 million MT was loaded, an increase of 8.7% compared to 2012. When looking at cargo throughput by coast, as in past years, traffic through Caribbean ports (71.9 million MT) was greater than that through Pacific ports (62.9 million MT).

E l S alvado r

During the period, this country had a throughput of 5.7 million MT. Like last year, its share in the isthmus dropped, going from 4.5% in 2012 to 4.2% in 2013, and a rate of decrease of -1.3%. This was mainly due to reductions at Corsain (-77.9%) and La Unión (-74.3%). Acajutla had growth of 3.9%.

The volume of traffic shown in Table 4 does not include transhipping, transit, raw materials and

finished products from free trade zones (maquilas) and cargo of the Colón Free Zone and the

Panama Petroleum Free Zone since these are not either imports or exports. Most of this freight

comes from the Panamanian ports at either end of the canal.

CENTRAL AMERICAN PORT STATISTICAL SUMMARY, YEAR 2013

1.5. Cargo throughput by type

Containerized cargo accounted for the highest throughput volume with 69.6 million MT or 52.0% of C.A. total, a decrease from 54.1% from the previous year, caused mainly by the increase of bulk cargo in the region.

Liquid bulk segment was in second position with 31.2%, an increase of 1.5 percentage points compared to 2012. There was also an increase in solid bulk by 1.6 percentage points; while there was less general cargo and Ro-Ro cargo (see Table 7).

The simple average of total cargo volume by number of vessels was around 7,000 tons. Panama kept

the largest average of cargo per vessel with 9,000 MT. The average for Costa Rica and Nicaragua

was 5,000 MT per vessel. Caribbean ports accounted for 6,000 MT per vessel, while Pacific ports had

a figure close to 10,000 MT per vessel.

Solid Bulk Cargo: Solid material loaded directly into the cargo spaces of a ship without any intermediate form of containment or packing and is loaded or offloaded with a crane or in combination with conveyors.

Solid Bulk Vessel: Specialized vessel for the transport of solid bulk products.

Terminal: Facility established in or outside of a port made up by infrastructure, facilities and surfaces included in its water zone that allows for the full carrying out of port operations.

TEU: Normalized unit based on a 20-foot long ISO container (6.10 meters) that is used as a statistical measure of traffic flows or capacities. A normalized 40-foot Series 1 ISO container is equivalent to 2 TEU. Mobile boxes less than 20 feet correspond to 0.75 TEU, those longer than 20 but shorter than 40 feet are 1.5 TEU, and those longer than 40 feet are 2.25 TEU.

Transit: Goods onboard, which upon their arrival at a certain port are to be offloaded at port, loaded in another transportation mode and ending outside the country borders.

Transshipping: Comprises the transfer of offloaded containers and box/trailers from a ship and then loaded on a different vessel. However, in those places where geography or infrastructure allow it, this operation can be complemented by another overland transport mode (e.g. railroad) that will move the cargo to another port that is sometimes a long distance from the first, in order to be shipped further.

Type of Cargo: Segment of merchandise moved at ports according to its form and physical characteristics (General, Containerized, Ro-Ro, Bulk Liquid, Bulk Solid, Others).
