STATIONS OF THE CROSS PART 1 INTRODUCTION & THE GREETING XIn the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. The Lord be with you and also with you. 'Now the hour has come for the Son of man to be glorified Now my soul is troubled. What shall I say: Father, save me from this hour? But it is for this very reason that I have come to this hour. Father, glorify your name'?' (Jn. 12:23,27) MEDITATION We stand before the cross - the cross on which our Lord hung to redeem humankind. As we meditate on the way of his passion let us remember that it was for us that he was crucified. May it help us to be truly sorry for the times when we have failed him, and strengthen us to take up our cross and follow him in our lives. Lord Jesus, you came from the Father to redeem us. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Lord Jesus, you showed your love for us on the cross. Christ, have mercy Christ, have mercy. Lord Jesus, give us your strength to take up our cross and follow you. MEDITATIONWestandbeforethecross-thecrossonwhichourLordhungtoredeemhumankind.Aswemeditateonthewayofhispassionletusrememberthatitwasforusthathewascrucified.Mayithelpustobetrulysorryforthetimeswhenwehavefailedhim,andstrengthenustotakeupourcrossandfollowhiminourlives. READINGTheSonofmanisgoingtobedeliveredintothepowerofmen;theywillputhimtodeath,andonthethirddayhewillberaisedupagain.'(Mtl7:22-23)MEDITATIONPilatecouldfindnofaultinJesus,buthehandedhimovertothepeople-aweakrulerswayedbyaviolentcrowd. ItmadelittledifferencetoPilatewhetheroneJewlivedordied,anditenabledhimtoobtainfromthecrowdtheusefulaffirmationthattheyhadnokingbutCaesar.SoPilatehandedhimovertothem.Wemayliketothinkthatwewouldnotbepartofthiscrowd,andyetineachoneofusisthevoicewhichcries"Crucifyhim!". ForeverytimewefailJesuswejoinourvoicetothoseoftheangrycrowd. LordJesus,wehavesinnedagainstyouandcrucifiedyou.

READINGHehadnoformorcharmtoattractus,nobeautytowinourhearts;hewasdespised,thelowestofmen,amanofsorrows,familiarwithsuffering, Yetourswerethesufferingshewasbearing,oursthesorrowshewascarrying,(is.53:2-4)MEDITATIONTheprocessiontotheexecutionbegan,andJesus,thoughweakfromcontinuousquestioning,mocking,andbeating,wasmadetocarryhisowncross.Hewasledawayasacommoncriminaltosufferoneofthemostdegradingformsofexecutioneverinvented.ButtheburdenthatJesushadtocarrywasmuchgreaterthanthephysicalweightofthecross,forhealsohadtocarrythesinsofusall.Letusofferoursorrowforthetimeswhenwehaveaddedtothisburden.LordJesus,wearesorryforthetimeswhenwehavefailedyou.

READINGInhisanguishheprayedevenmoreearnestly,andhissweatfelltothegroundlikegreatdropsofblood.(Lk.22:44)MEDITATIONWeakenedbytheunbearabletormentsthathehadalreadygonethrough,theaddedweightofthecrosswastoomuchforJesus,andhefell.Ashelaytherethecryofanguishthathewaslatertouttercannothavebeenfarfromhislips,'MyGod,myGod,whyhaveyouforsakenme?'Wesometimesfeelalone:thatGodhasforsakenusanddoesnotanswerourprayers. Butwe,likeJesus,mustknowinourheartsthathoweverfarawayGodseemstobe,heneverforsakesus-heisalwaysfaithful. LordJesus,evenyouoncefeltforsakenbyyourFather.

Nowshesawhimbeingledtohisdeathatlittleoverthirtyyearsofage.Wasthisreallywhathehadmeantwhenhesaid,'DidyounotknowthatImustbebusywithmyFather'saffairs?'CertainlythiswastheswordthatSimeonhadpredictedwouldpiercehersoul.ButMary,unlikemostofthedisciples,didnotdeserthersoninhistimeofneed,butstoodbyhimtotheend.LetusaskthatwetoomayhaveafaithlikeMary,tostandbyJesuswhateverthecost. Heanswered,"Iwillnotgo",butafterwardsthoughtbetterofitandwent.Themanthenwentandsaidthesamethingtothesecondwhoanswered,"Certainly,sir",butdidnotgo.Whichofthetwodidthefather'swill?'(Mt.21:28-31)MEDITATIONJesuswassoweakthatthesoldierswereafraidthathemaynotreachtheplaceofexecution,sotheyforcedapasser-bytocarryhiscross.Simonnodoubttriedtorefuse,butintheendhedidcarrythecross.OnlythedaybeforethediscipleshadinsistedthattheywouldremainfaithfultoJesuswhateverhappened,butfirsttheyfellasleepinthegarden,andthenafterthearresttheyranaway.HowliketheparablethatJesushadtold,whereitwastheunwillingsonwhoinfactdidwhathisfatherwanted.Wordsandemptypromisesarenotenough.We,likeSimon,musttakeupourcrossandshareinChrist'spassioninourdailylives. READINGWebroughtnothingintotheworld,andwecantakenothingoutofit;butaslongaswehavefoodandclothing,weshallbecontentwiththat.(1Tim.6:7-8)MEDITATIONThejourneywasover-theyhadarrivedatlastattheplaceofexecution.First,theystrippedJesusofhisclothing,andsoheendedhislifeashehadbegunit-withnothing.Wehaveclothingandenoughfood,andmanyothercomfortswhichwerightlyenjoy,butwemustnotbecomesoinvolvedwiththethingsofthisworldthatweloosesightofwhatreallymatters.WemustkeepoursightfirmlyfixedonGod,andbereadytoacceptwhatevercomestousinhisname-eventobeingleftwithnothing.
