More and more SWLers are discovering the particular charm of Medium Wave DXing (MW DX); perhaps it isn't easy to pick up far distant stations from other continents on medium wave—despite the new Geneva Wave Plan. DXing the shortwave is far more comfortable and thus no challenge ... at least that is what the m w. enthusiasts say On the other hand simple gear will do for the beginning of MW DX. such as smaller transistor radios and about ten metres of outdoor aerial, a simple L or T. Great successes can be obtained with more sophisticated gear, allwave receivers, special antennas, matching and tuning circuits, measuring devices and so on. What are MW propagation conditions like these days, around the 1979 solstice? There is a large number ol factors to be included into our small analysis. 1stly It is winter in the Northern and summer in the Southern hemisphere of Earth. Best MW DX conditions prevail generally during winter. 2ndly We have perhaps just passed the peak of the 21st solar activity cycle. Solar activity is in fact still very high. However, the lower the sun s activity, the better MW DX conditions. 3rdly MW propagational characteristics alter with rising frequency

from the lower to the upper end of the band. The upper margin shows, for instance, quasi shortwave propagational characteristics. Taking these three points into account and considering regular daytime variations, we can give the following recommendations: Always hunt for MW DX at night— between sun set and sun rise Your OX circuits must lie under the cover of night. The inospheric layer which is detrimental to MW DXing, the lowest, absorbing D-layer, which devours MW signals, dissolves immediately after sun sat but builds up at sun rise. If you start DXing the medium wave at about sun set. always begin at the upper end of the band progressing slowly downward Listen into the following directions: North, North-Fast, East, South-East to South, in the middle of the night you can listen into any direction all around the wind-rose, but towards sun rise DX will be open from the following directions: North, North-West, West. South-West, and South, (For DXers in the Southern hemisphere North is always turned into South and vice versa.) As indicated above the current high solar activity exerts a negative influence on MW DXing. MW DXers in

higher Northerly or Southerly latitudes ere generally favoured by lower D-iayer attenuation. As always there is one exception to the rule: MW DX conditions are not favourable within the two polar auroral belts where the ionosphere is almost continuously disturbed by the influx of solar particles. Anyone using directional loop antennas needs an azimuthal equal-area projection world map with his QTH m the world's centre. Or make use of a terrestrial globe which should be as large as possible. Connect station location and your QTH with some tape forming a great cricle section and orientate from your location. You will be surprise at the results. Station equipment: The better the receiver, the better the results. They should suppress a great deal of crossmodulation. .Long L- or T-antennas should be suspended as high up as possible to bring enough signal fieldstrength. They have no directional characteristics. If you use loop antennas put an antenna tuning circuit between loop and receiver. And remember: Nightime is DX hunting time.

HE'S GOT SPUIS THAT JINGLE, JANGLE. JINGLE GENE MARTIN - 3303 Ea s t Evans Avenue - Denver, Colorado - 80210 • • • • • « » » » » » There has been some bragging i n club pub l i ca t ions recent ly as to which k i l o w a t t - i n f e s t e d , local -p lagued, QRM-cureed and image -a f f l i c ted DXer has the worst l o c a t i o n for the p u r s u i t of the hard-to-get d i s t a n t s t a t i o n . I cannot l e t th ie eort of competit ion go by without responding to i t for the FCC l i c e n s i n g m i l l has been running o o k f o r yea r s when i t comes to Denver. We now have 12 ANers on AM and w i l l soon have 13 (1393) . Sevan of t h a e re NSP a f f a i r e that only an ac t of God ever s i l e n c e s . As for images, we have minor ones which are r a r e l y heard because they are cover e up by major ones. A l so , throe of our Denver dsytimere, 990, 1220, A 1390, manage to transmit a ground wave a l l n ight , an open c a r r i e r o f 100 watts or so. Our 1220 ground wave AN i s strong as WOAI when you loop toward i t . Furthermore th i s 1220 th ing combines w i t h KTLK on 1280, and leap- frog* the 1280 program onto KSL a t 1160. The KTLK engineer was a a s e d when I pointed out to him how t h i s 1220 OC mixed w i t h the ea thsa t i ce of the superheterodyne to put h ie s i gna l on 1160. But he had no d i f f i c u l t y understanding i t . The l o c a l FCC knows a l l about the strong OC on 1223 a l l night A they don ' t give a t i nke r ' s dam that t h i s daytimer never r e a l l y shuts down. I a always amazed whenever I get msay from the Denver BF jungle and get to hear the c l a r i t y of s i gna l s i n remote p l aces . So I have f l e d th i s Denver l o c a t i o n often, and i n the l a s t f i v e y e a n , I have sampled radio reception i n such quiet p laces as D a l l a s , Minneapolis, f a r up i n the nmuntains of Colorado, Centra l Iowa, NE Naw Mexico, London, P a r i s , Mazatlan, and the is lands of Hawai i . We are going back/to Hawaii on Dec. 3 for 12 n ights . I 'm taking along the GX Super Radio, and w i l l feed what I hear into a Sory casse t te r e c e i v e r . That ' s how had Denver condit ions a r e . Juet see how far I w i l l go to get away frcm t h a !

During the Second World War a very popular e t a t i on heard wae WGK on short waves from Schenectady, N.Y. w i th ttopar news i n Spanish as w e l l as conmentariee by Vicente Tovar arte other speakers .
