The President’s Columnby David McFarling

Well here it comes like a freight train in a tunnel. The anti-gun faction of our government aided by our liberal press are dead set on taking a big chunk of our second amendment rites away and when they are gone we will not get them back. The Sandy Hook tragedy has given them the excuse they have wanted to ban “assault weapons, high capacity magazines and impose unenforceable and impractical background checks on private gun sales.

Bans will only create a black market for semi- automatic firearms and high capacity magazines. Bans have never worked. Did prohibition stop folks from getting alcohol? NO. A ban will simply drive the procurement of such firearms underground where they can’t be controlled at all. A magazine ban will have the same affect. The Sandy Hook shootings could

not have been prevented. The person who did it was Crazy. The problem was no one wanted to recognize his problem and get him the help he so disparately needed. It is not the gun that killed those people, it was a deranged PERSON. The Boys mother bought the guns, and failed to secure them. She is to blame if any one because she denied the fact that her son was mentally ill.

We as a Society have got to come to grips with the fact that mentally ill people prone to violence have got to be controlled. Criminals have got to be controlled. If a person is bent on harming others he or she will find a way to do it , if not with a gun then a knife , ax , hammer or any number of other objects. We need guns to protect ourselves from those who would seek to do us harm. Furthermore we need guns to protest us from a tyrannical government. The liberals say that the things that occurred in Germany in the 30’s or Stalins purges in the Soviet Union could not occur here, don’t bet on it. In this world, with so much violence all around us we need an effective means of self protection. The gun is the best one available.

What can you the American gun owner do to protect your second amendment rites? Call , write, e-mail or visit your elected officials. Tell them your views , feelings and beliefs. We can’t allow a few boisterous people to force worthless feel good laws down our throats for the false hope of safety and security.

April 2, 2013 The Honorable Richard Burr U. S. Senate 217 Russell Senate Office Building Washington, DC 20510 Dear Senator Burr: On behalf of the membership of the NC Rifle and Pistol Association, I would like to thank you for your service to the country and the state of North Carolina. As you know, the debate about gun control in the wake of the Sandy Hook, Connecticut tragedy escalates with each passing day. The membership of the NC Rifle and Pistol Association would like to express to you our opinions on this subject. A ban of assault rifles and the ban / registration of high capacity magazines would not have averted that or any other similar tragedy that has occurred in recent memory. In American society it is proven fact that banning anything only leads to a deeper desire to possess the banned item or substance. The recent rush to purchase firearms, ammunition, and magazines only illustrates this point very well. A major part of this debate also concerns background checks on the private sale of firearms between law-abiding citizens. We feel that whereas this sounds reasonable on the surface, in reality it could impose an impractical burden on law-abiding citizens to simply sell or transfer personal property. In addition, if not carefully managed, it could lead to defacto firearms registration. As you are no doubt aware, additional legislation to restrict firearms, high-capacity magazines, or any other regulations to limit the legal sale or ownership of firearms has the potential to seriously impede our Second Amendment rights. Please note that additional laws will have no effect on the illegal sale of firearms in the criminal element of society, as by definition, criminals do not obey the law. We appreciate your consideration in this matter, and ask that you keep in mind our opinions in what will be an historic reinterpretation of the Second Amendment of our beloved US Constitution. Respectfully, David H. McFarling President

this letter was sent to all NC US Congressmen and Senators.

The NCRPA is happy to announce the first annual North Carolina Shooting Sports Games

To be held this summer in a variety of shooting sports.

The goal of the program is to have the shooting sports included in a state wide program of matches to recognize the top competitors. Medals will be awarded to top finishers and in most sports this will be done in each classification. These matches will be run by shooters and for shooters to avoid past problems where some aspects were handled by an outside group and occasionally the shooting sports were excluded completely.

This program was approved shortly before deadline for this article so some details and a complete list of which sports will be involved are not available at this time. Four sports have signed up so far with more having been contacted to join us. Currently on the schedule are Bullseye Pistol, High Power Rifle, Vintage Military Rifle, and IDPA. Matches to be held at Matches to be held at Durham Pistol & Rifle Club Caswell Ranch Shooting Sports (www.dprc.org) (www.caswellranch.com)

High Power Rifle - June 15th IDPA - June 23rd

Bullseye Pistol - June 16th.

Vintage Military Rifle - July 20th.

I hope you can join us for one or more of the matches this summer and help make this a successful start to a new program for shooters around the state. You can contact Clark Hardesty at [email protected] for more information and to find out which additional sports will be participating this year. I hope to see you at the matches!

Contact your elected officials

Let them know how you stand on firearms and other issues. Don’t be the person that sits back in his/her easy chair and simply says “it can’t happen here”, because it can, and in some states it already has happened. Don’t wait until it’s too late.

Contacting your elected officials is very easy. It can be as simple as a quick e-mail, letter or phone call. Most people forget that we are their bosses, that they have been elected to represent us, but unless you let them know what your opinion is, and how you want them to vote on issues, they will never know. And don’t just limit yourself to your state senators, let everyone from your local Sheriff, to the President know what you want them to do. Remember, whether you voted for them or not, they are there to serve you.

Here are a few website that help you find the contact information of

your elected officials.

March 12, 2013: For the last seven years the U.S. Army has been try-ing to replace its standard 9mm pistol (the M9). This is all the re-sult of numerous and continuous complaints from troops, who have found that combat in Iraq and Af-ghanistan provides lots of situations where the pistol is a crucial weapon. The current American Army pistol has been found wanting. The list of complaints is long. A big one is the dust and sand so common in Iraq and Afghanistan, which leads to magazine jams. That was partially fixed with a new magazine, but there were a lot of other problems that re-quired a new pistol. The dust and sand tended to get into the loading mechanism because of the open-slide design. Other complaints in-cluded the lack of a rail on top for accessories, or threads so that a si-lencer can be screwed in. Then there is the poor placement of the safety switch, inability to adjust the hand grip to fit many different hand siz-es and the difficulty users have in quickly replacing components in the field. The army is holding a com-petition for a new pistol, a process that is supposed to be completed in two years. Meanwhile the army is ordering new M9s to replace those bought in the 1980s that are dying of old age and lots of combat. Army leadership has long resisted calls for a new pistol and ignored the differ-ent combat situations in Iraq and Afghanistan that were behind these pleas. There was just this mindset that pistols were not that important. Britain had a similar problem and recently adopted the Glock 17. This weapon is typical of the more

modern designs the troops want. The Glock has long been very popu-lar pistol with police and military users and one of many new models that have the new features the troops want. The Glock 17 was designed by Gaston Glock 30 years ago and ini-tially became enormously popular with policemen. Some armed forc-es use it, like Austria and Norway. There are over twenty variants, usu-ally having to do with caliber. The American FBI, for instance, uses the 10.2mm (.40 caliber). The Glock has a plastic (polymer) frame and can be safely carried in the holster, loaded and ready to fire. All one has to do is aim and pull the trig-ger. The Glock magazine carries 17 rounds compared to 15 in the M9. All these characteristics have proved enormously popular with police, who are often called on to use their pistol with no warning. In Iraq and Afghanistan troops often find them-selves operating like SWAT teams and that made other pistols like the Glock appear so superior to the M9. Many troops would buy another pistol with their own money, a trend which has embarrassed the army leadership. The Glock is a simple pistol and very reliable. The manufacturer has subjected the pistols to very extreme environmental tests and tweaked the pistol design to ensure that a Glock would always fire. Over 2.5 million Glocks have been manufactured in the last three decades, meaning that spare parts and servicing are easy to find. There is also demand for a larg-er caliber round. SOCOM (Special

Operations Command) has ordered several larger caliber pistols for their troops over the last decade. Last year the U.S. Marine Corps ordered 12,000 .45 (11.4mm) caliber pistols (at $1,900 each) for its SOCOM and recon troops. Many troops want the old M1911 .45 caliber ACP pistol back, The M1911 was replaced by the M9 in the 1980s. The M1911 is a 1.2 kg (2.45 pound) 210mm (8.25 inch) long weapon with a 127mm (5 inch) barrel and a 7 round maga-zine. Compared to the M9 9mm pis-tol the .45s have more hitting power, while the M9 is a bit more accurate at up to about 50 meters. The new marine .45s are not the old M1911A1 model but the more modern Colt CQBP (Close Quarter Battle Pistol), which uses the same ammo as the M1911A1 but has a number of improvements that make the weapon more reliable, flexible, and accurate. The CQBP holds eight rounds, is built to resist salt water corrosion, accept rail mounted ac-cessories, and so on. There are several improved .45s available because of demand from police departments and government agencies (like the FBI). In the 1990s SOCOM adopted the Heckler and Koch Mk 23 SOCOM model. This is a 1.47 kg (3.2 pound) .45 pistol with a 12-round magazine and the ability to carry a silencer. It is expen-sive, at $2,400 each. Loaded with a silencer and laser aiming device the Mk23 weighs 2.29 kg (5 pounds). The Mk23 is a precision weapon, capable of accurate fire at 50 meters (51mm/two inch shot groups). The Mk 23 is for offensive operations while the lighter and cheaper USP

WEAPONS OF THE WORLD: Why Is It So Hard To Get A Decent Pistol

NCRPA Vol. 42 - No.1 Spring - Page 7

Tactical model was later introduced for personal protection and other duties not requiring the heavier Mk 23. Over the last decade Ameri-can troops in Iraq and Afghanistan discovered, through combat experi-ence, what types of weapons worked best at close range to take down the enemy. It was the same with SWAT teams and commandos all over the world. When conducting a raid and finding yourself up close and personal with someone trying to kill you, there is a need for a heavy caliber pistol or a shotgun (firing 00 shot or slugs). The premier pistol for ensuring you take down someone is still the .45 caliber (11.4mm) or .40 caliber (10mm, but only with a heavy bullet) pistols. These weapons are light and handy, compared to as-sault rifles or shotguns, and have a long history of quickly taking down an armed and determined foe.

As the U.S. Army Special Forc-es discovered, if you are well trained and know what you are doing, you should carry a pistol, in addition to your rifle. But not the official issue (since 1985) M9 but something with a bit more stopping power. The Spe-cial Forces prefer new model .45 cal-iber pistols, although 10mm weap-ons are also popular. The reason for this is that you are most likely to be using the pistol indoors, where your target is going to be really close. You want to knock him down quickly, before he can get at you with a knife or even his hands. Many troops are getting their own pistols and most commanders have been lenient on this issue. The same applies to shotguns. Although the army and marines have bought a lot of them (the Benelli M4 Combat Shotgun is a particular favorite), there never seem to be enough of them for some units (that spend a lot of time raid-

ing buildings in hostile neighbor-hoods). The U.S. military adopted the 9mm pistol in 1985, largely to standardize ammunition. All other NATO states used 9mm for pistols. The U.S. also noted that most 9mm pistols were carried by officers and support personnel, who rarely used them in combat. SOCOM came into being a few years later and immedi-ately began planning to bring back .45 pistols. Actually, many Special Forces and SEAL operators never gave up using the .45, as it was the ideal pistol for many commando operations.

a message fromWayne County Sheriff,

CAREY WINDERS

I have been asked by many Citi-zens my stance on the President’s Executive Order regarding the Gun Control Initiatives. Many citizens have asked, since this order came about, “Will my Deputies or I start seizing weapons from law abiding citizens?” The answer is, NO. I have not fully read this entire Ex-ecutive Order. However, in the Pres-ident’s news conference, I do not

recall hearing the President say he would be taking weapons from law abiding gun owners. I did see a copy of certain guns that will be banned. There are a lot of questions on this and there will be plenty of discus-sion regarding this issue. Keep in mind that an Executive Order by the President is not Legislation and since Sheriff ’s are deemed as Consti-tutional Officers, they not required to abide by an Executive Order. As your Sheriff, I took an oath to uphold the United States Constitu-tion and the North Carolina State Constitution. Meaning, as Sheriff I will stand by the 2nd Amendment that our forefathers made certain was a part of our Constitution. I en-courage our Citizens to contact our Congress and State Legislators to ensure that the rights of law abiding citizens’ not be infringed upon.

As for banning weapons, it is my personal belief this will not accom-plish anything. We need to use com-mon sense. If a person is willing, has the intent to kill others, believes their purpose in life is to kill inno-cent people, and does not mind tak-ing their life in the process, there is little that can be done. Remember it does not have to be a weapon to carry out this deed. Have we forgotten that two jet airliners crashed into the twin towers? When this tragic event occurred, did we ban jet airliners? No matter what re-strictions you impose evil will seek other methods to destroy and kill.
