We are delighted to inform you that Mobberley Parish Council is now the owner of the balance of land - some 10 acres - in the centre of the Town Lane Land site. This has taken consid-erable time and effort to secure, and to avoid possible conflict we have not advertised the fact that we were seeking to ac-quire it. Even better, the cost of the land has been nil, with only a relatively small legal fee to meet.

Moving to practical matters, you may recall that most of the site falls within an Area of Special Biological Interest. As such,

we need to be maintained to foster this designation. To this end, we are having a con-siderable section of the overgrown land mowed; work which should have been com-pleted before you read this. However, we need to remove and stockpile the cuttings to avoid the nitrogen leaching back into the soil to the detriment of the natural fauna. We will stockpile the cut material at a number of locations to create habitat for the animals etc that live or forage on the land. The Scouts have offered to help with this, along with removing the self-seeding trees. However, the Steering Committee has decided that we should offer our help and devote a weekend to assisting them. So, we are asking neighbours and those with an interest in the land to devote a couple of hours over the weekend of 7th and 8th December to help us out. The sessions will start at 10.00 am each morning last until 1.00 pm. Please come along prepared with rakes, saws and gloves, and help us tidy up the area.

As a final point, we need to return to the matter of dog fouling on the land. We continue to receive a high number of complaints about it, so please clean up after your dog. We are now confident that we will be able to provide a waste bin at each entrance to the land in the near future and that these will be emptied on a regular basis by Cheshire East Council. In the meantime, please take your bags home.

Thanks to generous donations from The Mobberley Village Society and The Mobberley Trust plus successful bid for a grant from the Big Lottery Fund we have been able to complete an extension to the Edward Moreton Scout Hut at Hall Bank and are now able to store all of the Rose Queen Festival Equipment at the field rather than transport it to and from Town Lane Hall Farm.

We would like to publicly thank Bill Leech of Town Lane Hall Farm, and Geoff and Ian Norbury for the use of their tractor and trailer each year to move the equipment.

As mentioned in last month’s newsletter, permission has now been granted to remove the two Yew trees either side of the Mobberley War Memorial in front of St Wilfrid’s Church. Once the trees have been removed, work will commence on restoring the Memorial to its former glory, recognising the brave men of Mobberley who died in the first and second world wars.

Mobberley Parish Council would like to thank the generous donations of the Mobberley Village Society and the very kind residents who forwarded a donation help towards the restoration of this important monument. If anyone else would like to make a donation to-wards the restoration work, please contact the Clerk.

During the winter months we will do our best to keep open our Research Centre in the Rajar Building from 10am to 4pm Monday to Friday but there may be occasions when severe weather prevents our volunteers from getting to Mobberley (some of them come from far-flung parts such as Congleton and Mac-clesfield). In the event of snowy or icy weather members are advised to telephone the Centre (01565-872210) to check that it is open before setting off on a journey.

The Village Society committee including Barbara Cooper MBE (pictured right) planted a Copper Beech tree this year on the Town Lane land in celebration of our Queens' Diamond Jubilee in 2012.

The spade used to plant this Copper Beech was the very same spade first used in 1953 to plant a Red Oak tree on Church Lane at the north west corner of the Cricket Ground where it still stands, in celebration of Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation. The Red Oak was, at that time, planted by members of the Parish Coun-cil, Sir Hugh Mais, Mr. T. Davies and Col. J.G. Rid-dick.

The spade was then engraved and preserved by Sir Hugh and his son Robert for 60 years, until recently when Doctor Robert Mais kindly donated it to the Village Society.

The Village Society are now commissioning a second engraving on the spade before placing it in a glass case in the Rajar Building for the enjoyment of present and future parishioners.

Hurrah! This year is one of those years when your Advent Calendars are factually correct as Advent Sunday does indeed fall on the 1st December. Advent is about looking for Christ’s coming, not in Bethlehem 2000 years ago, but his return at some point in the future. It is a time of penitence and reflection as we prepare ourselves to meet him, whether that is by him coming to us or us going to him. We shall mark Advent with an Advent Carol Service on Sunday 1st December at 6.30pm.

We continue the Advent theme at our Christingle Service on Sunday 8th December at 10am when we reflect on Jesus the Light who has come, and who will come, into the world. We present each child with a Christingle: an orange adorned with a candle, a red ribbon and sweets.

On Saturday 14th December we shall be joining our friends from Mobberley Methodist Church for our Open-Air Carol Service at the heart of our community. Join us outside The Village Bakery at 10am and many thanks to the Bakery, in advance, for their help and support.

On Sunday 22nd December we shall be holding our Sunday Club Nativity Service at 10 am when the children present to us their own unique take on the Christmas story. Then, that evening, we will be holding our traditional service of Nine Lessons and Car-ols at 6.30pm, followed by mince pies and mulled wine.

On Christmas Eve we shall be holding our ever-popular Family Crib Service at 3pm, when we hear the Christmas story, see the children put together our Christmas Crib and smell the tantalising fragrance of frankincense and myrrh. The service concludes with the children gathered around the crib to sing ‘Away in a Manger’. In the evening we shall celebrate Midnight Mass, beginning at 11.30am. This is in contrast to the Crib Service, which is a very beautiful and traditional affair, conducted according to the Book of Common Prayer, with readings from the King James Bible.

There will be two further celebrations of Christmas Holy Communion on Christmas Day, with a said service at 8.30am and a sung family service at 10am.

Heading into January, our Christmas celebrations come to a close when, on Sunday, 5th January at 10am, we celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany, the arrival of those Wise Men and the revelation of God’s Messiah to the wider world.

The following Sunday, 12th January, we switch from the liturgical calendar to the agricultural one when, we celebrate Plough Sunday at our monthly All-Age Service at 10 am. We ask God’s blessing on the plough and on the seed and pray for our farmers in the year ahead.

Finally, on Friday, 24th January, we shall be holding our annual Burns’ Night Dinner Dance at the Victory Hall. This is an evening of skirling bagpipes, haggis, speeches, whisky, dancing, and bucket loads of tradition. Places are limited; tickets cost £25 and are available now by contacting the number above.

You can find out more about all these services and events, and much more, on our website at www.mobberleychurch.co.uk.

Superfast Fibre Broadband Coming To Mobberley Many users of the Internet in the village have noticed our broadband speeds are less than stellar, particularly in the evening when sites like iPlayer often grind to a halt. Knutsford and Wilmslow now have superfast fibre broadband, but so far upgrading the Mobberley exchange has been decreed not financially viable by BT. This is set to change, though. The government has announced £28m of funding to increase internet speeds in Cheshire’s villages and plans are now in place to upgrade the Mobberley exchange between now and 2015. The project team advise that the more interest that is expressed by residents, the faster the upgrade will hap-pen. So, if you'd like faster broadband, register your interest at www.connectingcheshire.org.uk via the box at the bottom right of the home page. If you’d like any more information, please contact Gareth Wilson via email at [email protected].

Burns’ Night Dinner Dance St. Wilfrid’s Church invites you to its annual Burns Night Dinner Dance at the Victory Hall, where they will celebrate Robert Burns with whisky, whirling and skirling as they raise a toast to the ‘sonsie’ haggis. This is an evening of poetry, speeches, tradition and a three-course Burns night meal of cock-a-leekie soup, haggis, neeps and tatties followed by cheese and oatmeal biscuits, all rounded off with country dancing and a rousing chorus of auld lang syne at midnight. Come join in and warm

the cockles of your chilled January heart. Tickets cost £25 and are available from the Rector.

Mobberley Pre-school The Pre-School children (as well as their parents and staff!) have had a busy few weeks enjoying all the Halloween and Bonfire Night activities and they are now prepar-ing for some festive fun!

As we are approaching Christmas the children have started making lots of festive crafts and they continue to be very busy practising their Nativity play, which will take place on Tuesday 17th December. Doors open from 11.30am and everyone is welcome.

THANK YOU! The Pre-School would like to take this opportunity to thank Mobberley Village Bakery and the local Co-op store for their generosity in donating lots of scrummy treats for their Halloween Spooky Sale. Thank you also to those made and donated home-made goodies. Over the four-day event, the children enjoyed lots of fun games, activities and competitions, and with the Treat sale, they raised over £70 towards the running of the Pre-School. The staff would like to say a ‘big thank you’ to all parents and children for participating and congratulations to the winners of the best Spooky plate competition! Thank you also to all parents who donated toffee apples for the Primary School Bonfire - you helped the Pre-School raise £95 on the night. Well done!

We do hope everyone enjoyed the Pre–School Quiz night at the Railway Inn. It was a fun-filled night and a great success, raising over £400 towards the running of the Pre-school. Thank you to those who attended and in particular those who donated raffle prizes. Particular thanks go to Quizmaster Jonty and all the staff at the Railway Inn. The Pre-School also received a generous donation of £100 from Oliver Valves Knuts-ford. This kind donation will be used to maintain the outdoor fence and equipment so that the children can continue to play and enjoy the outdoor space.

FUNDRAISING As a registered charity, the Pre-School relies on donations of all kinds in order to ensure and maintain its existence. Throughout the year, the Pre-School holds a number of fund raising events and is grateful for your continued support.

As part of the Pre-School’s fundraising, tickets for the ‘Mobberley Pre-School Mega Draw’ will be on sale from Monday 2nd December. This is your chance to win many fantastic prizes, including a six-month gym membership for two and a one-night stay for two in a luxurious Cheshire hotel whilst helping the Pre-School. Please don’t forget to do your on-line shopping through www.easyfundraising.org.uk. All you need to do is register, select our Pre-School name and then go to the website whenever you do your online shopping. Each time you shop, the retailer will make a do-nation to the Pre–School. If you are interested in your child joining Mobberley Pre-School, please call Sharron Pennington on 07771 426292. New-starter packs are available now. The Pre-School is Ofsted registered and accepts children from two years of age. Children aged three to four qualify for 15 hours of free Pre-School care each week. Pre-School runs from 9am to 1pm term-time only at Victory Hall, Mobberley. For more information, please visit our website at www.mobberleypre-school.co.uk.
