Baby, You’re a Star!State Parks has many star parties throughout the year. The night sky has enlightened and inspired for thousands of years, and New Mexico is blessed with dark, beautiful night skies showcased at our parks.

Observatories at State ParksState Parks has three astronomical observatories in the system, which allow visitors to learn from experts and see night sky objects.

City of Rocks State Park - This observatory was the first in the system. The roll-off roof allows for amazing viewing, and visitors can see distant galaxies and night sky objects on video monitors or through smaller scopes. Astronomers provide regular programs.

Clayton Lake State Park - A partnership with volunteers and local astronomers was the drive for this observatory. Located in the central part of the park, a state of the art telescope and regular star parties afford visitors with great night sky views.

Leasburg Dam State Park - This newest observatory was a partnership between the Astronomical Society of Las Cruces (ASLC) and the NM State University Astronomy Department. The ASLC loaned a research-grade telescope to the park, and volunteers provide programs and conduct research.

Meet the Stars!State Parks regularly holds star parties through

knowledgeable rangers, professional and amateur astronomers, and volunteers. From star gazing basics with views through individual telescopes, to large-scale observatory experiences, State Parks has programs for

all levels of night sky enthusiasts.

Camping and RV’ing in parks allows visitors to experience parks on a local level. Here are some of the great activities and programs featured in State Parks.

Two Day Trip39 miles, one way Your adventure begins in Taos to tour part of the Enchanted Circle Scenic Byway in the Moreno Valley. Three State Parks are located along US 64, featuring great camping, recreational opportunities and park programs.

Vietnam Veterans Memorial State Park is 22 miles east of Taos on US 64. Established in 1971, it is one of the first Memorials of its kind in the United States dedicated to Vietnam Veterans.

Continue on to Eagle Nest Lake State Park, located 8 miles north of the Memorial. This is a great park for camping, fishing, boating and other fun activities. Camp here or at Cimarron Canyon State Park, 9.4 miles northeast on US 64. The Cimarron River runs through the canyon and the park offers amazing forested views and great trout fishing.

Other Hidden Jewels60 miles, one way To extend your trip in the beautiful, Mora Valley, two additional State Parks are nearby. Stay the night at Coyote Creek State Park. Drive 36 miles south from Cimarron Canyon on US 64 and NM 434.

From Coyote Creek State Park, you can also visit Morphy Lake State Park, 24 miles south along NM 434 and 94. Both parks provide camping and fishing in a secluded area.
