Aman Shanti, located in the SultanShahi area of Hyderabad city, was a programme of the Henry Martyn Institute (HMI). Founded in 1930, HMI is an ecumenical Christian organisation for the study and teaching of religions and the promotion of interfaith relations and reconciliation. The 1990 riots in Hyderabad acted as a turning point for the Institute, and it actively began reconciliation and relationship-building programmes. HMI viewed development as a strategy to build peace and create sustainable, supportive relationships between communities as the path to cessation of communal violence. Sultan Shahi is a communally sensitive neighbourhood in Hyderabad’s old city. The Aman Shanti Centre set up here strived to build local leadership and bring together Hindus and Muslims to improve the lives of their communities. The organization’s community-development programme included running schools, training centres and health clinics in areas located between predominantly Hindu and predominantly Muslim neighbourhoods. Because of the location of these community centres, people of both faiths participated in the programmes.

They created a fund by pooling a sum of Rs 1,000 each and then used this fund to provide small interest-free loans to the poor. The organization worked on the basis of an Islamic principle discouraging usury. In the initial years, they worked with Muslims, but gradually extended support to all communities. The organisation was registered only after some years of its functioning. In 2011-12 its annual transactions was to the tune of Rs 40-50 lakhs. They encouraged small savings among the poor, small entrepreneurs and traders.

Mahila Sanatkar, a mutually aided cooperative society based in the Old City of Hyderabad, worked with women artisans not only in honing their handicraft skills, but also in creating new designs and, most importantly, in entrepreneurial skills. They helped prepare business plans and also tried to link women with financial, technical and marketing services. The goal was not just to enable women to contribute to family income, but to train them in business transactions, increase their mobility and public interaction and enhance their self-confidence. Providing these women with employment was also helping to revive the dying craft of zardozi in Hyderabad. The organization was promoted by the Deccan Development Society and the Confederation of Voluntary Associations (COVA), after the communal riots of 1991 in the Old City of Hyderabad, as a way to build a long-term relationship with Muslims in the area, and particularly to encourage Muslim women to come forward and build on their traditional skills in zardozi,

Muslim Educational, Social and Cultural Organization (MESCO) was established in 1983 by a group of young Muslim doctors. Recognizing the need for development support for the Muslim community, MESCO chose to focus on health and education. The organization sought to achieve excellence in educational standards and bring educational services within the reach of the community. In nearly three decades of existence, MESCO had developed a family of institutions, spanning a range of specializations in education and health care. MESCO provided affordable health services through its Diagnostic Centre, Dental Clinic, Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and also trained women doctors in ultrasound diagnostics through its Ultrasound Training Programme. Educational work was carried out through schools, Junior College, Undergraduate, Post Graduate and Professional courses – all affiliated with recognized boards and institutions. The organization also ran coaching centres and talent search schemes, had scholarship schemes for meritorious students who required financial assistance, promotedsports among youngsters and ran hostels for both girls and boys. MESCO had a large outreach both among the Muslim community and beyond.

As its name suggests, the Muslim Educational Society worked for the education of Muslim children. However, it had always supported a percentage of children from disadvantaged castes among non-Muslims. Operating with a team of only two persons, the society had been able to reach out to a large number of children across several villages. It worked towards its objective by providing support for books, study material and educational training. It occasionally assisted children in madrasas. The organization raised local donations, and also supported its work with rentals from its own real estate properties.

Established in 1981, MV Foundation worked in Hyderabad and various other districts of the state. Its interventions, which had evolved over the years, were in the areas of education, eradication of child labour, health and natural resource management. The programmes were united in their overarching goal of the pursuit of child rights and education of all children in the age group of 5-14 years. Thus the health programme focused on maternal and infant morbidity and mortality, ending child marriage and the nutritional status of children till the age of 3 years. Similarly, the work on natural resources developed from an analysis of the causes of the low nutritional status of children at non-formal education centres. The foundation worked closely with existing institutions, building community support to strengthen them. It worked with all marginalized groups across both rural and urban areas.

Set up in 2007 by Dr.RafatSeema, KaneezFathima and a group of friends, Nisa Research and Resource Centre for Women started off as an informal support group. It assisted in the struggle for justice of Muslim youth who they believe had been illegally detained by the police and victimized in fabricated cases following bomb blasts in the city. Through this experience, the Centre got involved with the women in the youths’ families – mothers, wives, sisters– whowere afraid to speak out. The organization was subsequently registered, and had a programme and a research wing. It engaged in social welfare activities: helped underprivileged groups access government schemes, provided legal aid and counselling to women in need, joined relief efforts and reached out to both poor Muslim and non-Muslim women following incidents of communal violence. It also served as a platform for advocacy and campaigning on issues such

The National Child Labour Project was launched by the Government of India in 1988 in districts with a high concentration of child labour. Andhra Pradesh, with its high prevalence of child labour, was one of the states where focused initiatives were started in order to address the problem. Associated with this national scheme, Sunrise Society for Health and Education started its work in Nizamabad in 2001 with special focus on vulnerable children from the Muslim community. The organization worked with children who had dropped out of school or worked as child labourers. It ran a school for former child labourers and offered a vocational training programme for girls.
