ESSENTIAL OIL BASICS

Essential oils are not really an oil. They are a very potent part of a plant that contain medicinal and

cosmetic qualities.

Most essential oils are high in antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral properties (tea tree, rosemary,

lemon, peppermint, eucalyptus, lavender)

Essential oils are not the same as fragrance oils. Fragrance oils are made with alcohols, whereas

essential oils are derived from the plant itself.

Essential oils are extracted from plants by distillation, cold pressed or by solvent extraction.

Distillation—steam distillation is the most common extraction method, where steam is passed over the plant material to

extract the volatile liquids. The vapors are condensed into liquid form to give us essential oils

Cold pressed—pressure is applied to the plant material to extract the essential oils (most citric oils and carrier oils are

extracted this way)

Solvent extraction—used with oils with low essential oil yield, where a chemical is added to the plant material to extract the

essential oil, along with other fats and waxes.

Essential oils are very potent and should never be used undiluted on the skin.

A more expensive essential oil does not necessarily mean better quality. The quality of the oil comes

from the extraction. Research what plants grow and thrive in which part of the world and source

essential oils from that origin.

Dilutions and Doses

Essential oils can be used in a number of ways. The best ways to use essential oils is to diffuse it or dilute it.

Oils can be diffused in electrical diffusers, spray bottles, vaporizers, or warmed up in a pot of boiling water.

Oils can be diluted with carrier oils, in baths, with water, or with creams, lotions, and shampoos.

Essential oils have therapeutic properties for physical and mental ailments and can be used accordingly for skin care and aromatherapy.

Baths: 3-15 drops in a tup

Compress: 3-5 drops in 1 cup of water

Creams and lotions: stir in 3-10 drops for every ounce of lotion

Dryer: 15-20 drops on a wet towel or dryer ball

Facial clay or masque: 3 drops in 1 tablespoon of prepared masque or clay

Hand or foot soak: 5-10 drops in every quart of water

Inhalant or steam: 3-5 drops in a bowl of water

Massage/body oil: 10 -20 drops in every ounce of carrier oil

Perfume: up to 30% total volume

Room spray: according to desired strength

Salve: 6-12 drops per ounce

Washes: 6-12 drops in a gallon of water

Essential oils can be categorized into broad groups depending on their aroma

Floral

Woodsy

Earthy

Herbaceous

Camphorus

Spicy

Oriental

Citrus

Generally, oils within the same category blend well with each other

Floral oils blend well with spicy, citrus, and woodsy oils

Woodsy oils blend well with all categories

Minty oils blend well with citrus, woodsy, herbaceous, and earthy oils

FRAGRANCE CATEGORIES

www.HennaArt.ca Starting with Essential Oils | 20

When creating a perfume blend, it is important to have a blend of essential oils with top, middle and base notes so you can have a well rounded perfume.

Top notes are fragrances that are airy and light, Many floral, citrus, minty, and camphorous

oils are top notes. These fragrances will evaporate within 1-2 hours.

Middle notes are fragrances that will evaporate within 2-4 hours. Many herbaceous, spicy,

woodsy and earthy oils are middle notes. Those that linger longer are base notes.

Base notes are fragrances that will linger for 4 or more hours. They are heavy fragrances that

provide a “base” for your perfume, but should be used sparingly as they can give a pungent

smell.

TOP NOTES:

Basil, bergamot, citronella, eucalyptus, grapefruit, lavender, lemon, lemongrass, line,

orange, peppermint, etc

MIDDLE NOTES:

Cajeput, cinnamon, clove, geranium, jasmine, black pepper, rose, rosemary, tea tree, ylang

ylang, etc

BASE NOTES:

Cedarwood, Frankincense, ginger, patchouili, sandalwood, etc

CREATING PERFUME BLENDS

www.HennaArt.ca Starting with Essential Oils | 21

IMPORTANT NOTE

Be sure to take notes on what you have added in your essential oil blends. This helps recreate favorite items and ensures you do not recreate your disasters

Be sure to label everything you create.

All the formulas in this section are written in “parts” so you can replicate the recipe for as bit or as little of a batch you want. Use either weight OR volume as your “parts”

Always heat your ingredients in a double boiler (pot with simmering water with another pot or heat resistant glass container). Never use the microwave to heat your ingredients

Always allow your essential oil blends to sit in a cool dark place for at least one week. This allows the fragrances to mature and come together nicely

Always add your essential oil blends to your products when it has cooled. If you add the essential oils when the product is too hot, it will cause the essential oils to change quality and properties.

Always keep your food and cosmetic containers separate. Have a separate set of bowls, cups, spoons, etc for your work with essential oils. Do not cross contaminate!

Always sterilize your equipment, jars, and containers before doing any work with or making any products.

ALWAYS HAVE FUN!

Room Sprays

Room sprays that are available in the market are filled with harsh chemicals and artificial ingredients that can cause irritation for some. Commercial room sprays are also stored in aerosol cans, creating waste and a larger carbon footprint.

Making your own room spray not only allows you to make a mix of fragrances that work for you, but they also allow you to use the therapeutic properties of essential oils to target your situation.

For example, if you have a student at home during exam time, it would be best to create a room spray that will help increase focus, concentration, and attention. On the other hand, you may have a young one fighting a cold. A blend that will help his/her immune system and respiration would be ideal in that situation.

Commercially available room sprays and artificial diffusers do not allow you the options to cater your fragrance.

To make a room spray:

1. In a dark bottle or jar, make an essential oil blend. Store this in a cool, dark place for at least 1 week.

2. Use distilled water to fill a spray bottle almost to the top. Leave room for the essential oils and for shaking the bottle.

3. After your essential oils have been blended for at least a week, add the mixture to your spray bottle.

4. Shake the bottle well and spray this to refresh a room, get rid of pet odor, lift your spirits, help you sleep, etc.

5. Be sure to spray away from furniture and upholstery.

Skincare and Essential Oils

Facials

The techniques and the essential oils you choose for your overall skin care should be based on your skin type. There are many types of skin, ranging from dry to oily, mature to sensitive, normal to problem prone. Many people fall into more than one skin-type, and as a result, need to treat their skin with

formulations for two or more skin types.

A facial is one of the best things you can do for your skin. A facial includes cleansing, steaming, exfoliation, and a mask. A facial is finished off with a toner and moisturizing cream.

Cleansing: Clean your face gently with a vegetable oil, like jojoba oil, to remove makeup and dirt.

Steaming: Steaming your face leaves your skin looking youthful and fresh, while moisturizing the skin and unclogging pores.

Exfoliation: A gentle scrub that removes dead skin cells from the skin’s surface, helps bring a vibrant glow to your skin. Avoid chemical exfoliates and follow recipes in this publication.

Mask: A facial mask absorbs, moisturizes, and rejuvenates the skin.

Toner: Astringent toners draw out water from underlying skin levels to the surface, temporarily plumping wrinkles.
