News From Miss Colleen Page

Over the holidays, I attended the state Indigenous Education Conference in Brisbane with GSPS Principal Project Officer Karen Buckley. Together we presented our schools Culturally Inclusive Pedagogy Project to colleagues from around the state. The feedback we received from our presentation was overwhelmingly positive with many questions about how other schools could implement a project such as ours into their schools to better support their students and improve engagement. We are very proud of what we have achieved and are extremely grateful to be working alongside such an amazing group of people who are a part of our parent group, whose support is instrumental to our progress. As part of the conference, we also attended presentations from other schools and listened to keynote speakers. There are a lot of wonderful projects happening around our state to support indigenous students and it was a very worthwhile to be a part of a conference where we could share our knowledge and experience.

Welcome Back to Semester Two !

We are set for another busy term of learning, with many other special events along the way for everyone to participate in. This term we welcome back Ms Naomi Bailye as our District Relieving Teacher, after her time at Talwood State School. Remember our attendance target of 93% - Every Day Counts.

Indigenous Education Project –

Regional Showcase Winner !

Late in Term Two we received news that our school received a Regional Showcase Award for our Indigenous Education initiatives. This is a great achievement for our school, and is a tribute to the hard work and dedication of our staff, led by Mrs Robyn Pearcey and assisted by Regional Adviser Mrs Karen Buckley. This means we have won a Regional Showcase Award TWO YEARS IN A ROW ! Our school was further recognised by being invited to share our initiative at the State Indigenous Education Conference over the vacation, where Miss Colleen Page represented us – please read her comments in Newslink this week.

Parent-Teacher Interviews

I look forward to seeing as many parents as possible at our interviews being held next Tuesday and Wednesday. Our teachers need to speak to every parent, and will be making follow-up calls to all those parents who do not book in for an interview. Our interviews are designed to provide more information about our Semester One Report Cards, and set the scene for a productive Semester Two. If you have not yet made a booking, please return the form included with the report cards, or ring our office.

2018 School Opinion Surveys

Parents/Caregivers, school staff and Year 5/6 students are encouraged to have their say in this year’s suite of School Opinion Surveys by providing their opinions about what this school does well and how this school can improve. Each of the online surveys will open until Friday, 24 August 2018. Access details for the Parent/Caregiver Survey have been sent home with students. The survey can be completed via computers, tablets or smart phones with internet connection. Parents/caregivers are welcome to complete their survey online at the school, and school computers/tablets will be available on request at the office, and at our Parent-Teacher interviews next week. If you haven’t received any survey access details by the end of this week, please contact our office staff on telephone 46777333 or [email protected]

Lockdown Drill

This week our staff and students practised a lockdown drill. We staged the drill during break time, to measure our reaction time and identify any problem areas for improvement. This drill, along with fire drills, helps students to be aware of what to do in case of an emergency, and is designed to increase our safety measures. Some children worry when these drills occur, so I ask parents to discuss the need for them with children to ease any of their concerns. Kind regards

Lew Verney
