WELCOME
Welcome to the Art de Cure Gallery at Clinical Prosthetics
& Orthotics (CPO) to benefit CMT. This event has come
together with the help of many volunteer hours and an
original vision by Art de Cure & Melinda Lang, founder of
Upstate CMT. Art de Cure, a collaboration between art and
medicine, curates art galleries in local medical practices. A
portion of each sale benefits CMT as well as a local artist.
The funds raised will go towards the CMTA’s Strategy to
Accelerate Research (STAR), which brings together world-
renowned scientists to develop therapies for the three most
prevalent types of CMT. Partnering with the National
Institutes of Health (NIH), the FDA, biotech and
pharmaceutical companies, the CMTA is on the brink of
uncovering a pharmaceutical treatment, one that may slow
down or even stop nerve degeneration.
On behalf of CPO, Art de Cure, Upstate CMT and our
volunteers, I thank you for taking time to support a very
personal cause and hope you have a "Starry Night".
Sincerely,
David B. Misener

WHAT IS CMT?
Charcot-Marie-Tooth, or CMT, is the most commonly
inherited peripheral neuropathy affecting as estimated 6
million people worldwide. CMT, named after the three
physicians who discovered it in 1886, is a degenerative
nerve disorder, which leads to the loss of normal use of
arms, legs, hands and feet.
Signs and symptoms include:
• muscle weakness and wasting in the extremities,
• balance problems,
• frequent falls,
• loss of sensory nerve function,
• numbness and pain in extremities,
• foot drop, high arches or flat feet, hammer toes
• curvature of the spine
• in rare instances difficulty in breathing
There currently is no medication for treatment or cure,
however the CMTAʼs Strategy to Accelerate Research
(STAR™) initiative has made great strides in finding
candidate drug compounds.
Founded in 1983, the CMTA is a 501(C)(3) federally
recognized nonprofit organization.
The CMTA is devoted to their mission of:
• Generating resources to find treatments and a cure
for CMT neuromuscular disorder
• Creating awareness about CMT, the most
commonly inherited peripheral neuropathy
• Improving the quality of life for those affected by
CMT providing patient support, public education,
funding research, and ultimately to find a treatment
and cure of CMT.
The organization is led by an Executive Director and
governed by a voluntary Board of Directors (BOD), and an
international Medical Advisory Board (MAB) comprised of
over fifty clinical and research professionals in specialties
such as neurology, genetics, orthopedic surgery, physiatry,
physical therapy and podiatry.

Art de Cure, a 501 (c) 3 formed in 2010, is a collaboration between art and medicine. Art de Cure is a unique concept which brings art to an audience not likely to explore art galleries. Galleries are housed in medical practices and the work of regional artists is on display. The host practice chooses the charity that will benefit and Art de Cure curates the shows.
The galleries are permanent with multiple shows and receptions scheduled each year. The Art de Cure Galleries are open to the public, and to the practice’s patients during regular office hours.
