Pope County Museum A great way to get and keep connected to our local history!

One of the first displays in the museum is a colorful advertising curtain from the DuGlada Theatre in Starbuck. The history of that theatre (as found in the Starbuck Centennial book) has been cop-ied on the next page. One of the ads on the lower right of the curtain is that of the Starbuck Mill-ing Company. A photo of that advertisement and of the mill (as found in the Starbuck Centennial book) is also on the next page. These are just two examples of many interesting items that have been carefully preserved at the museum. If you havent taken the time to visit or if it has been a while since you have been there it is definitely an item to plan for. The friendly, knowledgeable staff will be glad to assist you and answer questions.

    Thank

    you!

Starbuck has been blessed with many organizations that continually bring out the best in our town and many people wear numerous hats so a team like this doesnt rely on everybody being available all the time. Please consider joining and spending a few hours helping around town. Young or well seasoned, you are needed!

Think of the possibilities if we would all encourage someone new to pitch in.

    Everyone is appreciated.

Mayor Bakewell recently suggested a possible project for community improvement would be to clean up and paint fire hydrants that have weathered over the years as shown in the photo on the left. A member of the city crew noticed that Lowry had done a project like this last year as shown in the photo on the right. Paint and ma-terials would be furnished by the city. Other possibilities for participation will be

marina / beach / park cleanup and branch removal.

I am of the opinion that my life belongs to the community, and as long as I live, it is my privilege to do for it whatever I can. George Bernard Shaw

    Volunteer Projects 2013-14

Painted VFW bathrooms, door, and hallway.

Raked leaves on VFW property and mowed the lawn during the summer.

Help put up and take down flags for patriotic holidays and special events.

Trimmed hedges in the city park, helped with a beer garden, and donated $375 to the Starbuck Dragon Boat Festi-

    val in August.

Served 115 meals at our annual spaghetti fundraiser in September.

Worked to clean up the Starbuck swimming beach by removing weeds, installing block edging, building a 3 tier

rock garden, and improved an existing rock garden.

Working with the Starbuck Study Club to improve the beach house at the swimming beach.

Picked up litter along a 2 mile stretch of State Highway 28 west of Starbuck in the spring and fall for the past 7

    years.

Donate $100 annually towards a community Thanksgiving Dinner served at the high school.

Helped with Christmas Care. A local effort to provide presents and all the groceries needed for a Christmas din-

    ner to families in need.

Provided labor and some materials for a major project that updated the

mess hall and bar room. This included:

Removed old drop ceiling tile in the bar room and the mess hall, painted the grid work, and installed new ceil-ing tile. Each 2x4 ceiling tile is professionally de-

signed with graphics to honor an individual veteran.

    2. Removed carpeting on 2 walls in the mess hall. In-stalled firing strips, insulated the block walls, and in-

    stalled sheet rock.

    3. Removed carpet from the stage area and installed

    bamboo flooring.

    4. Removed existing railing around the stage and re-

    placed with new railing.

    5. Installed new wainscoting in the mess hall and the

    bar room.

    6. Scrubbed and sealed all tile floors in the mess hall,

kitchen, hallway, bar room, and bathrooms.
