Dear Friends,

As 2014 draws to a close, I wanted

to thank you again for your support and share with you a few highlights that your membership support helped make possible:

This spring we announced a transfor-•mational $1 million gift from Flint Hills Resources to create the new Flint Hills Resources Center for Excellence in Sci-ence, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) Education.

We also unveiled our new Nearshore •Experience, which portrays life at the shoreline, where sand dunes and man-groves meet shallow saltwater habitats. Many of the animals in the new Nearshore were brought to the Aquarium’s Second Chances Wildlife Rehabilitation Program injured or ill, were rehabilitated and deemed not releasable, and now serve as ambassadors to their wild counterparts.

In May, the Aquarium earned the presti-•gious 4-star rating from Charity Navigator, America’s largest and most-utilized inde-pendent evaluator of charities. Beautify Corpus Christi Association presented theAquariumwithitsfirstSustainabilityAward for our attention to detail in our landscape and maintenance, and we re-ceivedaTripAdvisorCertificateofExcel-lence award, given only to establishments that consistently achieve outstanding traveler reviews on TripAdvisor.com.

On June 25, we publicly announced plans •for the largest expansion in the Aquari-um’s 24-year history. Bringing the sights, sounds, and vibrant wildlife of the West-ern Caribbean to the shores of Corpus Christi, the $50 million Caribbean Journey addition–whichcompletesthefinaltwophases of the Aquarium’s original master

plan – will transform our Aquarium from a leading regional aquarium to one of the top aquariums in the nation. The news of our impending expansion was met with great enthusiasm both locally and around the state. The Corpus Christi Caller-Times went as far as to say that our Caribbean Journey expansion “will make Corpus Christi bigger, richer and smarter.”

In August, • USA TODAY announced your aquarium had been voted one of the ten best aquariums in North America through the USA TODAY 10Best Readers’ Choice Award for Best Aquarium in North Americapoll.Thankstotheeffortsofoursupporterslikeyou, wefinishedwiththesecond highest vote total.

In October, we announced this year’s •list of Wildlife Care, Conservation and Research Fund grant recipients. This year, we awarded a total almost $80,000 to a number of worthy research projects.

Andfinally,onDecember10th,asourcam-paign total reached $27.5 million, we broke ground on the long awaited construction of the Caribbean Journey building.

In 2015, our plans include a complete renova-tion of our Shoreline Grill restaurant, upgrades toourDolphinBayprogram, andanewtemporary exhibit focused on sharks and the exciting work conducted by scientists at the Harte Research Institute. Stay tuned for more information, and thanks again for being a member of the Texas State Aquarium. Happy holidays!

AQUARIUM NEWS

It’s a dream almost 40 years old, and it’s finallycomingtrue!OnDecember10,theTexas State Aquarium broke ground on the largest expansion in its history – a new 65,000 square foot Caribbean Journey expe-rience that will bring the sights, sounds, and vibrant wildlife of the Western Caribbean to the shores of Corpus Christi.

“This is truly a historic milestone for the Aquarium,” said Aquarium President & CEO Tom Schmid. “Over 25 years ago, our founders had a vision to take our guests on a journey from the Gulf of Mexico into the Caribbean Sea. Today, we begin construc-tiononthefinalphaseoftheoriginalmasterplan, and once open in 2017, this expansion will complete that vision. We will have one of the nation’s great aquariums right here in Corpus Christi.”

With an estimated completion date of Spring 2017,theAquariumwillcompletethefinalexpansion of a visionary master plan that will include an exciting Caribbean Journey wing, featuring;Caribbeanfish,bird,andreptilespecies;a4DTheater;afurtherexpan-sion of

The new Caribbean Journey wing will be significantlylargerthantheoriginalGulfofMexico exhibit building. “The new wing will be 50 percent larger, however, in terms of indoor exhibit space. It will more than double what we currently have,” said Aquarium

President and CEO Tom Schmid. “This is going to be a multi-level, highly immersive, state-of-the-art experience.”

The Aquarium launched the leadership phase of Campaign Caribbean, a $50 million capital campaign to raise the required funds for the construction of the Caribbean Journey wing, in 2012. Since that time, a number of gener-ous donors have stepped forward to help

support the Aquarium’s goal and vision, and to date over $27 million has been

raised.

In June of this year, the Aquarium publicly announced its intention to build the Carib-bean Journey expansion at the same time it announced that longtime Aquarium and community supporter H-E-B generously do-nated $3 million to the Aquarium’s expansion efforts.RobHall,GroupVicePresidentofH-E-B Gulf Coast Region stated, “The Texas StateAquariumisoneofthemostsignificanteducational resources in our state. In September, the Aquarium announced a $500,000giftfromValeroEnergydedicatedtowardtheCaribbeanJourneywing.Valero’sgift will sponsor the new entryway into the Caribbean Journey experience, introducing guests to the sights, sounds, and vibrant wildlife of the Western Caribbean.

BARN OWL REHABILITATED, RELEASED IN SABLATURA PARK

The crate door is opened and the snowy white barn owl darts out in a whoosh of

feathers.Hebanksright, flyingbetweentwolive oaks, turns left toward the horizon, and is gone. If you had asked Second Chances Wildlife Rehabilitation Program Wildlife Care Special-ist Laura Martinelli about the same owl when hefirstcametotheSecondChancesWildlifeRehabilitation Hospital, she would have told youanentirelydifferentstory.

“He was extremely lethargic,” Martinelli said. “His overall attitude was poor, he had lacera-tions on his legs, no tail feathers – he was a mess.”

The adult owl came to Second Chances via Alice, Texas, where a good Samaritan found him in a recumbent state and took the injured bird to the Second Chances Hospital. Upon

MartinelliandotherSecondChancesstaffkept a close eye on the owl, monitoring his vital signs and his attitude. They tracked his weight gain, hydration status, his diet, and closely examined the growth of his tail feath-ers. Senior Wildlife Care Specialist Kelley Shutt said that the substantial growth of his tail feathers and his substantially im-provedflyingandhuntingcapabilitiesledtheSecondChancesstafftodeterminehewasready to be released.

“Ifabirdcan’tfly, there’snowaywecanrelease it back into the wild,” Martinelli as-serted. “We were all really happy when we noted positive indications – his tail feathers were beginning to grow in.”

when they come in, and it can be really hard sometimes. But seeing them return to freedom, to their natu-ral habitats, it makes everything worth it,” explained Martinelli.

The program’s name truly says it all. “I mean, I love what we do here,” said Shutt, “We take in injured animals, heal and release them back into the wild, and give them a second chance at having a healthy life.”

So far in 2014, Second Chances as rehabili-tated and released 215 animals back into the wild.
