Sidearms and scanning equipment are to be set aside. Deviation from this or any other inspection protocols will not be tolerated.

The screen switches to an image of a starflield. A grim beat, then:

JANEWAY (to com)

All hands, this is the Captain. We're about to be boarded by Devore Inspection teams. Give them your full cooperation.

(grim) Let's get this over with.


Their soldiers have materialized on Decks Fifteen, Eleven, Four ... and One.

Janeway and Chakotay exchange a look. Suddenly, CLASSICAL MUSIC starts to PLAY over the com! (Mahler's SYmphony No.1.) Reactions all around.

as KASHYK, a striking-looking Devore officer, swivels in Janeway's chair to face her. Prax, Kashyk's secondin-command, is at the Replicator, removing two steaming cups of coffee, while a DEVORE SOLDIER stands nearby. The soldier carries a compact phaser rifle; Prax and Kashyk wear sidearms.

KASHYK (light)

I took the liberty of playing this music throughout your ship. I thought it might help your crew relax. Sometimes these inspections can be ... stressful.

JANEWAY (dry)

How thoughtful.

Prax eyes Janeway coaly as he approaches with the coffee.

KASHYK I've replicated some coffee. Black, as usual?

JANEWAY (tight)

Black.

Kashyk smiles, takes a cup from Prax, and continues as if he were picking up a conversation with an old acquaintance.

KASHYK Prax here still refuses to try it... but then he's a man of few pleasures.

Kashyk nods to Prax, who EXITS with the Devore Soldier. Kashyk smiles at Janeway as if at an old friend, indicates the chair in front of him.

KASHYK Make yourself at home.

OFF Janeway as she eyes this man who's taken over her office, apparently not for the first time ...

Something in his tone makes Janeway concerned, though she disguises it.

JANEWAY (casual)

Really. Why is that?

KASHYK Your predicament.

(beat, thoughtful) I don't expect it's been easy. Thousands of light years from home... navigating by strange stars ...

(pointed) ... trespassing in other people's space ... ignoring their laws.

JANEWAY We're just trying to get back to Earth, Inspector.

KASHYK Through the Devore Imperium?

JANEWAY It's tough to avoid.

KASHYK Still, most people make the effort. We don't exactly ... embrace outsiders.

JANEWAY "Gaharay."

KASHYK It means "Strangers."

(beat) Which brings me to a matter that could threaten our "friendship."

He spins the monitor around to face her. It displays lines of text and data -- a crew manifest.

KASHYK I've examined your crew manifest from our last inspection.

(off monitor) Commander Tuvok, Ensign Vorik, Vulcans ... Ensigns Suder and Jetal, Betazoids. All telepaths ... and yet for some reason you neglected to mention them.

JANEWAY For a very simple reason. They're dead.

(off his look) Tuvok, Vorik and Jetal died in a shuttle crash two months ago. Suder was killed in a conflict with a species called the Kazon.

KASHYK That's fortunate. For you, I mean. If I'd found you were harboring telepaths, I would have had to arrest you for breaking our Cardinal Protocol.

JANEWAY They were valued members of my crew ... not criminals.

KASHYK Perhaps.

(beat) Captain -- do you trust me?

JANEWAY Not for a second.

Exactly. And why should you? Trust has to be earned ... it's gradual ... and yet it's the foundation of all relationships ... professional and personal.

(beat) It's also a concept alien to telepathic races. Why take someone at their word when you can simply read their mind?

A beat. Then the door OPENS and Prax ENTERS.

PRAX (to Kashyk)

We1ve completed our inspection. There are no telepaths aboard. However, their sensor logs indicate they deviated from their assigned course on two occasions.

Prax glances at her, annoyed, then continues speaking to Kashyk.

PRAX (quoting "protocol")

Imperative Thirty-two, Codicil Sixtwenty-six: All Gaharay vessels that deviate from prescribed flight vectors will be impounded, their crews detained and relocated.

Janeway looks at Prax. Kashyk observes, turns back to his officer.

KASHYK Prax, it's clear the Captain didn't intend to break protocol. I expect we can overlook these infractions.

PRAX Sir?

(beat) Yes, sir.

Kashyk turns back to Janeway.

KASHYK I'm a reasonable man, Captain, and you've been cooperative. But consider this a reminder: You have a long trip through Devore space. Good friends can be an asset.

JANEWAY I'll keep it in mind.

The transporter enhancers are glowing. Seven is scanning the middle of the bay with a tricorder as we hear the faint SOUND of the transporter beam (the same sound heard when somebody rematerializes). But the sound is WAVERING slightly. Red Alert.

Ensign Kim. The confinement beam is unstable.


Kim and the N.D. working quickly. Red Alert.

KIM (to com)

We're trying to correct it now ...

As before. Red Alert. The SOUND of the transporter beam is louder now ... still WAVERING ... but we still don't see any evidence of the beam itself. Seven continues to scan the area in the middle of the room with her tricorder. Janeway ENTERS the bay, moving quickly.

Red Alert. The SOUND of the transporter EFFECT grows louder and louder. As Janeway, Seven of Nine and the N.D.s watch, we see fifteen Transporter patterns take shape in the middle of the Bay ... wavering, unsteady ... and TUVOK, VORIK, a STARFLEET N.D. and TWELVE ALIEN HUMANOIDS MATERIALIZE!

They're a different species from the Devore ... two families of refuges composed of men, women, and four children ...

JANEWAY (to com)

Nice job, Harry. All our guests are present and accounted for.

Janeway moves to the side of their leader, a dignified man named KIR.

KIR Captain?

JANEWAY They're gone. For now.

A short time later. Seven works a console as Janeway, Chakotay, Tuvok and Kir study a starchart on the Domescreen. A portion of it ZOOMS IN to show a gaseous NEBULA, with accompanying data.

SEVEN OF NINE The new coordinates are here, within a Mutara-Class nebula, twopoint-three-six light years from our current position.

CHAKOTAY It's definitely out-of-the-way ... less chance of being discovered. But it'll take two more days to get there.

JANEWAY (considers)

Two days ... that increases the chances that we'll run into another inspection.

TUVOK (nods)

Given the frequency of patrols in this area, it's likely we'll be stopped at least once.

(beat) The pulse is designed to track warp fields and impulse signatures. If we could lower our power output beneath its detection threshold ...

They've reached the door to Kashyk's quarters. It OPENS. Suddenly the pair realize they've arrived at an "awkward moment." They're not quite sure how. A beat, then Janeway breaks the silence.

JANEWAY They're in Transporter suspension.

KASHYK And the wormhole?

JANEWAY We found it. It's twenty-thousand kilometers off our port bow. We1ve determined that a photon torpedo, properly calibrated, will force open the threshold ... long enough for Voyager to get through.

A beat. Kashyk looks at her admiringly ... as his expression starts to change ... becoming cool.

KASHYK Congratulations, Captain. For a while, I wasn1t sure if even you could find it.

Janeway studies his face, confused, as Kashyk activates his communicator.

KASHYK (to com)

The door OPENS and Prax ENTERS with two soldiers, who post themselves at either side of the door.

KASHYK I'm the one who's impressed ... with your selflessness ... your "humanity." It made all of this much easier.

JANEWAY What about your selflessness? That touching story about the little girl -- was that a fabrication too?

As before. Red Alert. The CLASSICAL MUSIC continues to play. Prax is now there, working at Tactical.

PRAX The shuttles have disappeared from sensors. We've scanned for a wormhole... if there was one, it's gone.

Kashyk sits back in his chair -- defeated. Prax approaches.

PRAX I'll order Janeway and her crew removed. We'll confiscate their vessel ... and deliver them to the nearest detention center.

Kashyk looks at Janeway a beat, considers. Then:

A beat as Prax takes this in, then nods and EXITS, indicating to the soldiers to follow. Kashyk and Janeway are left alone. When Kashyk speaks, his tone is surprisingly gentle.

KASHYK Well played, Captain. It seems I never did earn your trust.

JANEWAY I had to take a few ... precautions. You understand.

KASHYK Better than anyone.

JANEWAY (beat, seriously)

I never lied to you. My offer to take you with us was genuine. It would still stand ... if you'd kept your part of the bargain.
