Nonetheless, I ask you to take a moment to reflect on how different your child’s educaon is today compared to your educaon. How many more opportunies do children receive today? Today individual strengths and challenges are catered for, and wellbeing and social skills are of most importance in the learning process. How much fun do our children seem to have when learning? And so it should be different. Educators today have more informaon about the brain, the process of learning, human social and emoonal development and the psychology and knowledge than ever before. Educaon systems, schools and teachers need to make best use of this new knowledge and deeper understanding in order to improve learning outcomes for our future generaons. This means changes need to be made to some out-dated pracces, and developing and adopng new strategies need to be a embraced. This leads us to the assessment, tesng and reporng debate. With a deeper understanding of learning and human movaon, assessment and tesng strategies too have changed. This week our Year 3, 5 & 7 students took part in the annual NAPLAN tests. For our Year 3s this was an experience they would have never before encountered. One lile Year 3 boy came up to me aſter the wring convenon test and said “Mr De Tullio those tests are just trying to trick us!” I think he was right! Today we know that tesng is only one small part of the assessment picture. To be fully informed requires observaon and recording of the learning process together with an understanding of the purpose for assessment. Teachers today use a wide variety of strategies to beer teach and assess our children. NAPLAN is just a very small snapshot of a complex process. As I dropped into the classrooms to see how the children were going I am pleased to report that they took on the challenge and did their best. Thank you to all the teachers for the way they ensured our children were ready for the experience both academically and emoonally! Board Talk…..

The School Board met for the first meeting for Term 2. As this was the first meeting, all Board members congratulated Matt Perry on his appointment as the permanent Deputy Principal at Star of the Sea. Everyone expressed how much the school looked forward to working with Matt into the future. The decision to have three Reception classes in 2016 was ratified at a previous meeting. Joe De Tullio informed us that enrolment interviews were in process and 25 families had been interviewed. The main focus of the meeting concentrated on the process for School Development and planning for continuous school improvement. Joe DeTullio introduced the Continuous School Improvement Framework and emphasised that it would form the basis of the school’s new strategic plan. Board members were supportive of the idea that a Café Conversation evening will be held in Term 3 and that parents be invited to attend and be a part of the data collection process. Three provocation questions will be posed at the meeting. What inspires you about Star of the Sea School? What can we do to make Star of the Sea a great school? What skills, knowledge and dispositions will our children need in the future? An invitation will be sent home later this term inviting parents to attend. The School Board urges parents to be involved in this process. Joe presented a proposal to offer a Play Group and Little Stars Transition Group to operate separately next term. The Play Group would be offered as a traditional play experience for pre-school aged children and the transition group would be offered as a pre-entry learning group for children two terms before they begin Reception. The Board were in favour of the proposal and letters will be sent to families with the aim of beginning these programs next term. The Board were asked to provide a parent voice regarding the issue of Year 7s becoming the first year of high school in the future. This is a matter that is on the state agenda. Joe DeTullio will pass on the views of the Board to the CEO. All other Board reports were tabled. The issue of the removal of the asbestos roof was discussed. The Board accepted the quote to remove the asbestos in the Term 3 holidays. Joe DeTullio was asked to liaise with the CEO and to secure an independent contractors agreement. The Board have organised to share a morning tea with the staff on Wednesday 4th June to thank the staff for their work and to reinforce the support of parents and the school community in acknowledging the great job being done. Next meeting of the school board is Monday 16th June. Christine Henderson School Board Chairperson

Remembering Mary Mother of Jesus in May

This month of May… dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary – offers us a unique opportunity to deepen our contemplative prayer life. Just as Mary pondered all the early events surrounding Jesus in her heart (Luke 2:19), we are invited to contemplate what the Holy Spirit chose to inspire and share with us regarding Mary – not only as Christ’s mother – but as our own (John 19:27). Perhaps it will bless your own contemplative prayer life:

What traits do you look for in a mother? What traits would God look for in a

woman to mother His only Son? The Scriptures may paint the portrait but the brush belongs to God.

The Holy Spirit moves the most intimate inspiration. A woman created, a

woman set apart. She stands as a model of chastity, of inner beauty, of humility and of purity; the golden vessel, chosen to carry the most important life the world will ever know.

Are we not called every day to live for God? Did she not model openness

to God the Father in every conceivable way? Did she leave any doubt that God’s will was more important than her own? Did she run when it was difficult? Did she flee from discomfort? Did she trust in God even when the future was uncertain?

Did she hide Him away or share Him with the world?

Are we not called to offer the Lord our bodies… in every way… for His

glory? Did she not allow our Lord to live within her? Did she not know Jesus more intimately than anyone else on Earth, even His closest followers?

She swaddled Him. She nursed Him. She guided Him through his early

years. She stood beside Him… never abandoning Him… even in the most difficult moments.

Now as our Mother, would she ever abandon us? God created her. He

Preserved her. He picked her. He descended upon her. He grew within her. Jesus listened to her, loved her, and honored her above any other. Not because she wanted it but because she deserves it… because she is different. It was her ‘yes’ to God that set His brothers and sisters back on the right path. It was her ‘fiat’ – her yes – that forever changed the world. ‘May it be done to me according to Thy will’ (Luke 1:38). One ‘yes’ opened the door to hope: hope in salvation, hope for life after death, and hope for even the most wretched of sinners.

And Christ shows us how to love her. He wants us to know her, to admire

her, to respect her and to trust her as our own, so He entrusted us to her and then gave her to each of us. He wants us to know and experience the love that only a Mother can give – that only His Mother … the Mother of God – created and chosen by God, can give

Gospel Reflection: John 14:1-12 The Way, the Truth, and the Life “Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many mansions if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. And where I go you know, and the way you know.” Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where You are going, and how can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. “If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; and from now on you know Him and have seen Him. “Philip said to Him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is sufficient for us. “Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not known Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; so how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father in Me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on My own authority; but the Father who dwells in Me does the works. Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father in Me, or else believe Me for the sake of the works them-selves. “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father.

God invites you to get to know her, to meditate on her heart as a window into His own. He calls us to honor her,

modeling her humility, her openness, her chastity, and her abandonment.

Just as our Blessed Mother reflects Jesus’ light more radiantly and more fully than any other human

in history, so we are called – as children of our Blessed Mother – as children of the light, to reflect and radiate the love and heart of Christ to all the world. In the light, it began with a courageous young teenage woman. In the light, God became man and walked among us.In the light of a bright Sunday sunrise, death was destroyed forever.

In the light of the Spirit’s flame, a beautiful young Church was born.

And it is in the light still today that we truly become brothers and sisters – sons and daughters – that

we become the family of God that we were formed, designed and created to be… one holy, pleasing, and perfect family… encountering the Divine love of the Blessed Father, His Blessed Son, and, indeed, our Blessed Mother. Taken from http://lifeteen.com/who-was-mary-a-reflection-on-the-mother-of-god/

Hello Friends, What a great week of Autumn weather we have experienced. Students and teachers have experienced NAPLAN and we look forward to the Working Bee this weekend. Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD) Please see below the letter from Catholic Education SA regarding Star of the Sea’s involvement of the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD) provided by the Department of Education. “This year our school has been asked to implement the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD). From 2015, all government and non-government schools in Australia will be required to participate annually in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability. Over 2013 and 2014 selected schools will participate in data collection under a phased approach before full national implementation in 2015. The Data Collection will provide all Australian schools, education authorities and the community with nationally consistent information about the number of school students with disability and the level of adjustment being made to enable the students to access and participate on the same basis as their peers. Students’ personal details will be de-identified in the data collection and aggregated information will be provided to Catholic Education SA who will further de-identify and aggregate the data before providing the data to the Department of Education. Data collected from schools in 2014 will not be made publically available. Parents/carers can decide whether they want their child’s information to be included in the Data Collection. Please notify me if this is your decision. There are no consequences for not participating in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data. Please contact Matt Perry if you have any questions. You can also contact me (Matt Perry) should you prefer that your child does not participate in the data collection”. More information is also available on the Department of Education website: https://education.gov.au/nationally-consistent-collection-data-school-students-disability International Competitions and Assessments for School Exams via the University of NSW (ICAS) Students who have nominated to participate in the ICAS through the University of NSW exams will complete the Computing Studies Exam next week. Only the Computing Studies Exam will be administered next week. All the best to our students taking part. Our Surrounding Roads Congratulations again to all of our community members on a smooth and successful week of picking up and dropping off students. Traffic is flowing smoothly and I have witnessed many courteous acts by drivers who let other road users into the flow of traffic and who are very mindful of our students using our school crossings. THANK YOU!!! Thanks and Blessings Matt Perry

ATHLETICS Students who are selected must attend trainings. For any information regarding cancellations due to weather, etc, please refer to twitter, sportstar@sportstar0. AASC The AASC activities for this term is R – Yr 2 Skipping and Yrs 3 – 7 Rugby. Both activities begin this week. SOCCER U6 Blue Well done to the coach on his first match today! Tough gig. Good job to the team too and well done to Matthew for his first ever goal of the season after an astonishing matter of seconds! The score was 1-1 U6 Gold U6 Gold (white) drew 2 all against Our Lady of the Visitation Blue. U8 Star of the Sea Under 8’s versus St Michael’s College Blue. What a super start to the season!! A great win 7 goals to 1. The team played a great match with multiple goals to Lachlan, Curtis and Blake. Also a great defensive effort by Luca!! Well done to All!!! U11 SOS DEF WEST LAKES SHORE 3-2 Well done boys! What a great first game to watch with awesome team work and skill. It certainly wasn’t easy and it was so great to see that you continuously passed the ball to each other, Rob would have been very proud of all of you. This is where we have to say a big thank you to Rocco for being our stand in coach for the day. Thanks again! Isias scoring 2 goals and Nicolas scoring 1. Well done! FOOTBALL Yr 4/5 Fresh from a hard fought loss to a very strong West Lakes Shore in round 1, the 4/5s took the field this week against Hendon keen to make amends. The team started strongly and were in attack all of the first quarter, with Tom Nagel slotting two of his four goals in the opening term. Captain Tate Parsons spent most of the first half pouncing on any loose balls that actually came back out of our attacking zone and booting them back in long, and when he went off injured just before half time we lost a key player. The inspirational skipper returned for the last quarter, with his strong rebounding play earning him a place among our best. With a new tackling rule in place this year it has been hard for players and umpires to adapt, but they only need to look to new player Jakob Virlas to learn how it’s done properly. Tough but fair – well done Jakob. We had to provide three players to Hendon each quarter and their Team Manager asked me to thank every-one who helped them out. They were impressed with how hard everyone tried when they were wearing a different guernsey – to the point that our players actually kicked most of their score. This is a real credit to the players involved, to the team, and to the school. Others to play well were Nick Boeyen with his spectacular mark and goal, Luke Tippins who continues to create space in the midfield (and was probably the best player on the field when he wore the Hendon jumper), and Alex Bennett who reads the play so well. Final score: Star of the Sea 8-10 68 defeated Hendon Primary 2-2 14 Yr 6/7 Hendon 13. 6. 78 def. SOS 5. 5. 35

After a come from behind victory in Round 1, SOS were back on home turf at Mitchell Reserve for the first time in 2014, fronting up against Hendon Primary. The lads seemed in good spirits and ready to rumble until Hendon decided they were really ready to play and left our boys in their wake with a six goal to none first quarter.Notwithstanding the aid of a helpful northerly wind, Hendon were very determined from the first bounce, something we can learn a lesson from. The effort required to compete at this level was stepped up by our boys after our sluggish start, and despite the opposition having 2 or 3 outstanding individuals who were able to bring their team-mates into the game, SOS brought a much greater effort and team performance to the arena after quarter time and the scoreboard shows both teams scored 5 goals for the last 3 quarters. Patrick Kluzeck was a contributor all day, making the ball his object, along with Jesse Baldan who showed great determination and effort - that’s all a coach can ask. Lewis Rowe battled his heart out and gave our roving types every opportunity to gain first use of the ball. Lucas Mercurio was his usual dogged in and under self, getting battered from pillar to post until he came off in the last quarter with a knee injury. Luke Edmunds showed some of the bigger boys what can be done by going in low and getting the ball with eyes and head over the ball, and dishing it out to team mates who were prepared to run and accept the handball that was so gamely acquired. The heavy tackling and relentless pressure of the opposition took it’s toll on SOS, but the boys really did battle it out to the end which is very admirable, and gives us something to build on for next week. There is a lesson to be learnt every time you pull the SOS guernsey over your head, and by the time you hit the showers after the final siren a new lesson sinks in every week. This week we learnt that we are entering another league where we face bigger, better, fitter and more determined opposition than we have previously encountered, and to compete we must raise the bar and apply ourselves to our training to improve and be fitter and more determined than we have done up to this point. It’s a great challenge- and if we accept the challenge and dig in we may just get the rewards that team effort delivers. That’s exciting!!! Let’s have a crack!!!
