Mobile BI Application

The Customer

The Star Knowledge customer is a leading provider of IT business solutions, with a focus on

Business Intelligence, to the North American market.

The Need

The customer’s business strategy was development of a functional-rich Mobile BI solution

application supporting various ERP components for sale to current and new customers. The key

business requirements included the Mobile BI solution to operate on different mobile platforms

and devices and provide features such as splash screen, Admin capabilities, Grid View, KPI Page

with graphical representation of data in the form of Bar, Line and Pie Charts.

The Challenge

The challenge was to develop the KPI data reporting view requiring dissimilar graphs on an array

of platforms including iphone, ipad, Blackberry and Android.

The Solution

The Star Knowledge Technical Team concluded that the optimum technical development

approach and environment included use of: Appcelerator Titanium, SQlite Database selected for

building the required mobile BI application. The Team designed, developed, and tested the

Mobile BI application on the simulator and the mobile devices.

The key capabilities included in the Mobile BI applications are as follows:

Connect to the server and list and render KPIs and render with different color view screens

Display the Bar, Line and Pie Graphs based on values returned by Web Services

Display Grid based on values returned by the Web Services

Filter or select a particular group of KPIs for viewing.

Navigate to Graphs screen.

Enter user name and password data.

Enter server information, data refresh rate.

The Customer

Global Electronics & Entertainment Company

The Need

The customer required a systematic solution to computerize their customer data gathering,

reporting, and analysis facility for web site entertainment placements. This requirement

necessitated design and development of a business Intelligence (BI) tool with data warehouse

capabilities. To meet this requirement the customer required a tool for use within their Digibase

environment that presenting data to a corporate BI dashboard.

The Challenge

The Digibase tool benchmarking and dashboard functions were not acceptable to the users as

the tool lacked capability to create extensions to existing applications and architectural

documentation was not available. New modules were required to operate with the existing

version and deployment.

Key challenges included:

Data Ingestion: Existing modules were incomplete and undocumented

Benchmark Computations: No capability for multi-year benchmarking of earlier data

Dashboard: No comparisons on multi-year benchmarks (Except basic Report Set)

The Solution

The Star Knowledge Technical Team developed application extensions within the existing

Digibase tool with MS IIS Web Server and MS SQL servers as underlying components. Existing

source code were analyzed and new extensions created to fit with the existing code. Testing

included the development environment and testing in a staging environment to ensure

production capabilities and user acceptance.



Solution work effort included:

Data Ingestion: Source data files containing performance information were analyzed and

existing modules that modified to populate the application as required

Benchmark Computations: Based on several years of data, metrics were developed as the

benchmark

Dashboard Development: Introduction of multi-year benchmark computations required

comparison with current performance data and reported based on user needs.

The Need

The customer required a systematic solution to computerize their data analysis facility for

Network advertisement placements. This requirement necessitated development of a business

Intelligence tool with data warehouse capabilities. To meet this requirement the customer used

spreadsheet to manipulate the data manually, this induced four person-days of tedious effort

and delay for every report with no accuracy.

The Challenge

The spreadsheet manipulation process was not acceptable in the work environment as it lacked

capability to consider multiple constraints and conditions with lack of appropriate process

documentation. The challenge was to provide a solution to analyze financial data without having

to change the way of maintaining the data in spreadsheets and consider very limited inputs and

import data from the spreadsheet. There were four key entities.

Budget: Entertainment event / show data for s specific period

Chron: Daily Network usage and financial

Pods: Maintain daily points by Network

Tracking: Track the points daily

The Solution

across the country.

The Need

Like all financial institutes, the Bank had to maintain all the records to understand profitability.

However, their Excel-based tools were lacking key capabilities and did not support the

complexity of the business.

The Challenge

One of the biggest challenges in designing the database was to accommodate complex reporting

and analysis. The challenge included identifying a solution to allow the Bank’s staff included:

Analyze data as deeply as required with drill down capabilities to grow the business

Provide a mobile capability on and off the Bank’s office facilities.

The Solution
