Welcome to STAR

STAR is the offi cial study association of the Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University. With more than 7000 members, STAR is Europe´s largest study association and above all, the most active, professional and international study association in the Netherlands. Each year, more than 270 dedicated active members organize diverse and challenging projects. These projects are classifi ed as social, academic, recruitment or research services. Furthermore we have community and publishing projects, which means there must be something that fi ts you!

STAR gives students the opportunity to get in contact with their fellow students and a broad range of companies. This is facilitated by the great amount of activities that are organized by numerous committees and Master Study

Clubs. There are activities for both BA and IBA students in all stages of their studies. The best known events are the STAR Management Week, Erasmus Consultancy Project, and the Erasmus Recruitment Days.

Being an Active Member at STAR means you will get a chance to meet lots of new people, to make new friends but above all to develop yourself professionally at many levels.

This brochure will give you more information about the committees STAR is recruiting for in September. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to step by the STAR Offi ce at T4-53.

The STAR opening party, Active Members Weekend and the theme nights at Villa Kakelbont are just some of the main events organized by the Activity Team. The teams consist out of enthusiastic first-year students who would like to be active at STAR. They organize several events throughout the year.

What does the committee do?In addition to the Active Members Weekend and the theme nights at Villa Kakelbont, the Activity Teams organize a Christmas dinner, a very competitive Soccer Tournament, an Active Members Barbecue and some parties all year round. If you have other ideas for a great event, it’s certainly possible to put these ideas in motion! In addition you will be coupled to a Board member who will guide you through your first year.

Every year in January the STAR Ski Trip takes place. Join a low-cost, but most importantly unforgettable ski trip with your fellow students. Après-Ski, lots of parties, skiing and snowboarding are all part of this great week where you will be able to relax and let go of your stress.

What does the committee do?The STAR Ski Trip committee arranges a yearly ski trip somewhere in Europe for all BA and IBA students. As part of the Ski Trip Committee you will be responsible for arranging an exclusive deal, original program, sponsors and a great location! As member of the Ski Trip Committee you will organize a week full of skiing, snow, parties and an introduction and reunion drink.

Kuala Lumpur, Chicago, New York, Paris, Shanghai... These are some of the previous locations of the BA Study Trip. Each year the trip is organized by the Study Trip Committee for a group of 40 of your fellow students. The destinations are fascinating because of their business environment, their universities, and their must-see hotspots. In addition, local shops and the partyscene will be discovered.

What does the committee do?The BA Study Trip Committee organizes an unforgettable trip for 40 students to a special destination, giving participants the best chance to discover a new country and culture. The committee will arrange company visits, trips to cultural highlights and party nights at exclusive clubs.

Every year in April, 40 IBA students take off for the IBA Study Trip. A trip organized by STAR members for their fellow IBA students. The trip lasts 10 days. In previous years, the IBA Study Trip visited cities as Mumbai, Singapore, Milan, St. Petersburg, New York, Sydney, Hong Kong and New Delhi.

What does the committee do?The IBA Study Trip Committee organizes more than just a trip, they offer students an experience in which they will discover every aspect of the country visited. The committee provides business students the opportunity to explore the country in terms of business, education, culture and not to forget nightlife. Previous study trips have shown that close friendships remain, even after the trip.

Reach Out is a committee of STAR that organizes a number of events and projects with the help of BA and IBA students to support the Rotterdam society. The committee makes students aware of the impact they can have on their community, involve them and most importantly, enable them to act.

What does the committee do?The Reach Out project gives students the opportunity to give value to the Rotterdam community. As a committee member you will be organizing a debate focused on investments in third world countries, a sport event to raise money for a specific charity fund and you will be in charge of the Buddy Project. The Buddy Project consists out of 25 students who will inspire primary school children to make the best out of their lives. But there is enough space for new projects and ideas. This is your chance to put your ideas into practice! You can make the difference!

STAR prioritizes development, not only of their members but also of the international community. The iCare project helps to accomplish that goal. Every year, iCare will seek to cooperate with an influential player in the developmental aid sector involved in an on-going assignment in a developing country.

What does the committee do?iCare organizes a trip to a developing country in which STAR members can participate in setting up a sustainable project for local people. In previous years the project went to Nepal, Uganda and Southern Kenya. Purpose is to break through inter-cultural differences in order to foster education, well-being and amity amongst the needy communities. iCare offers students a unique and enriching experience in order to extend their development horizon.

The IBA Events Committee organizes several activities throughout the year for the IBA students of RSM. IBA Social Drinks, the IBA Graduation Party, IBA Cultural Days, sport events and city trips are just examples of the activities the committee will organize. Besides these activities we challenge you to come up with new ideas and interesting events. Be the social center of your study!

What does the committee do?During the course of the year, the IBA Events Committee organizes several social activities. The IBA social drinks are organized on different locations and always result in a memorable night. In addition the IBA Events Committee organizes the IBA graduation party and many other activities. The IBA Events Committee exists to improve the social cohesion of the IBA student population by organizing events especially targeting this group.

The International Week is an exchange project for students from all over the world. Students show foreign students their city, local culture, local business life, party scene and their university. Each year, there are about 23 International Weeks all over the world. The International Week committee organizes the International Week Holland. They are also responsible for recruiting students to participate in International Weeks abroad.

What does the committee do?The International Week Committee organizes a week in Holland for international students. The committee arranges the program, sponsors, accommodation, and makes sure foreign students have the time of their life! The committee also gives Dutch students the opportunity to broaden their international horizon by spending time in another country.

The Interface Magazine is the magazine of STAR and the Rotterdam School of Management. Be a part of the Interface Committee and you will be at the centre of STAR and your study, communicating all ins and outs! The magazine features basically everything from reviews and reports on events, to in depth interviews and hot business topics, to current matters and more.

What does the committee do?The Interface Committee makes sure that students are fully aware of everything that happens around them, around STAR, their study, university and the business environment. Be the first to be informed on social and academic events, get the experience of working for a professional magazine, gain writing and editing skills, be involved in the strategy behind a magazine and use Interface as a platform to unleash your creativity!

The Speakers Series is an innovative and dynamic team who will organize diverse academic events, where the challenge can be found in getting the best speakers to our university. Think of Richard Branson, Reinout Oerlemans and many more.

What does the committee do? The Speakers Series Committee will be responsible for interviewing several renowned people from a diverse field of interests. While these interviews will be open for the public, the members of the committee are responsible for organizing the whole event and being the once who will start interviewing the guests. The goal of the Speakers Series event is to invite, educate, and facilitate students in forming opinions on issues that move our world. Get in touch with important speakers and experience how to organize a conference.

The Race of the Classics (ROTC) is the largest and most important sailing competition for students in Europe. 20 teams and a total of 400 students from different universities and colleges participate in this sailing event, in which you will sail from the Netherlands to the United Kingdom. With nearly 20 parties throughout the Netherland before the Race even starts, this is one of the biggest social events among students.

What does the committee do?The ROTC Committee facilitates the representation of the Rotterdam School of Management´s team in the Race of the Classics. You will run the acquisition, select participants, organize the team party in Rotterdam, and make sure the week will be unforgettable for Erasmus students.

An interesting company, a challenging case and teams from highly ranked universities is what the Case Competitions is all about. The Case Competitions Committee organizes case competition events in Rotterdam and builds up a network of universities. They make other universities participate in our competition and recruit students to represent the Rotterdam School of Management at other case competitions.

What does the committee do? You will contact companies to participate and to provide a case, contact universities and arrange a fun program for the (international) students participating. A case competition will last several days, where participants will compete for the best solution to a business case study under time pressure. They will present their outcomes to the judges (professors and/or company representatives) and the audience, who will decide which university wins.

STAR is a Study Association revolving around communication and creativity. As part of the Marketing Team you will make sure the brand image of STAR is captured. This Committee allows you to build up experience and expertise in the marketing field.

What will this team do? You will be primarily responsible for all internal and external marketing expressions, in short the Brand Image of STAR. Within this team, members will gain experience in managing the marketing strategy of a professional organization. In addition, you will be a sparring partner for marketers in one of the many committees. Building marketing campaigns, strengthening the STAR brand and the social media communication are part of the responsibilities of being a sparring partner.

Many projects organized by STAR depend on the knowledge of companies and financial support. In the commercial team you will be the switch between STAR and its important stakeholders. The Commercial Team is focused on Dutch and International companies, therefore the Commercial Team consists out of both BA and IBA students.

What does the team do?You will receive a diverse portfolio of companies who have an interest in STAR, and you will manage these accounts. In practice this means you will have regular contact by telephone and e-mail, and occasionally hold meetings in person with many companies. Furthermore, you will be a sparring partner for committees on their commercial plans and ideas. Besides these two main tasks, you will look for, and make use of new commercial possibilities and chances throughout the entire year.

The STAR Management Week is the largest on campus business event in the Benelux. This week-long, nationwide showcase event is considered our annual highlight. The week offers a broad variety of activities, being part of the committee is a truly diverse and unique experience.

What does the committee do? As a member of the STAR Management Week Committee you are responsible for the entire organization of the event. You will find companies to participate in workshops, convince top international leaders to speak at the Opening Conference, or find spectacular locations for a party or dinner. You will start in February from two days a week, and from April until October it is full-time. STAR provides financial compensation and the project is granted 15 ECTS!

STAR Management Week Erasmus Consultancy ProjectChairman, Treasurer, Commercial (2x), Marketing, Speakers (2x), Event

Consultants (20x) Be aware the ECP has a different deadline: the 17th of September

The Erasmus Consultancy Project (ECP) is a consultancy project in which tailor-made research is offered to Dutch companies which have an interest in expanding their business in an emerging economy. This year the ECP will conduct research in Thailand. The group consists out of 6 committee members and about 20 consultants. As the largest committee of STAR, this project perfectly combines fun with business experience.

What does a consultant do? The consultants of ECP have the task to help realize the foreign expansion ambitions of companies. The project will introduce you to the world of consultancy. In July you will travel to Thailand to conduct field research for three weeks! After returning home, the company will be eager to bring your advice into practice. Social drinks, dinners and parties will guarantee a fun experience. Furthermore the project is granted 15 ECTS!

What happens if I become an Active Member at STAR?

Once you are an Active Member, your social network will start to grow immediately. The Active Members Weekend, dinner with your committee on Wednesday nights and the sensational Villa nights are just examples of STAR’s routine. Have a meeting at T5, hang out in the social room at T4 and step by at the Board’s Offi ce to say hi.

We are always interested in new ideas or things Active Members would like to implement within STAR. Step up and share innovative and interesting ideas!

During the year you can participate in one of STAR’s many events: the STAR Management Week in October, the Ski Trip in January, the Erasmus Recruitment Days in February, the BA/IBA Study Trip in April or the Race of the Classics in April. Or just come and party with us at the Active Members Christmas Dinner, STAR’s prom and other parties all year round.

SIAF/STAR AcademySTAR offers you the opportunity to develop yourself at many levels by joining a diverse set of training possibilities. STAR can also offer you fi nancial support in case delay to your study progress is obtained by your work done for STAR.

Active Members WeekendIf you become an Active Member at STAR, you’ll join the Active Members Weekend from the 26th to the 28th of October where you will get to know your new committee members and all the other active members.
