Creative Director, Wanda Movie Park, Wuhan China (2013-2014)

Served as Client Representative for the Wanda Group (Beijing) via the Forrec Ltd (Toronto) to assess, redirect and facilitate the design of two original, interactive ride-films based upon traditional Chinese heritage and cultural legends. For their first urban theme park based on computer generated ride-films in Wuhan China. I mediated the collaborative work of multiple international Design/Build Vendors. The objective was to enhance current designs without impacting the schedule and budget. Researched, designed, modeled, animated design recommendations for easy adoption. Advised on the enhancement and prototyping of novel multimedia illusions (6) to blend virtual with real content. Developed sightline studies that transcended the physical reality into the virtual reality to maintain realistic audience viewpoints with computer-generated content. Coordinated and directed ride layout and vehicle design for integration between real and virtual assets. Interactive ride requiring the integration of character narrative, game mechanics and audience participation. Directed and reviewed architectural design and material selection and samples. Reviewed and edited scopes of work, directives and evaluations of deliverables.

Monkey King Journey to the West Interactive Ride Film

This interactive ride film is based upon Disney Toy Story Mania in California Adventure (5). It retraces the steps of the Monkey King from his humble beginnings to wreaking havoc in heaven and being banished and redeemed by Buddha. Audiences join the Monkey King in his classic tale.

FLY! Dome-Screen motion-based Ride Film

This immersive Domed-screen ride film is based upon Disney’s Soarn’ Ride takes audiences up to the heights scenic mountain temples. Audiences believing they are viewing the largest Chinese Ink Painting (8) in the world are up for a surprise as they are pushed over the edge and sprout wings of the crane. They transcend both time and space with 100% computer-generated content across China.

MONSTER!, attraction for Legend Cultural Development, Beijing China. (2016-Present)

Originate mythological story based upon ethnic Korean folklore and developed an immersive walk through attraction for tourists.

Concept Design Consultant: Universal Creative/Comcast (2012-2014)Consulted and managed the design development and presentation for multiple future project attractions for Senior Executives utilizing the existing and future entertainment character brands.

Concept Design: Disney Imagineering Futurist Resort Arcade (2012)Consulted with Disney Imagineering on collaboration with multiple departments on future attractions for Disney World Resorts. Collaborators included Disney Interactive Group, Disney Online, Disney Publishing, Disney R&D and Disney Cruises.

Sci-Fi Rock Opera Concept: Resorts World Sentosa Singapore (2012)Collaborated with Resorts World Sentosa, Singapore to develop an original script, design and music for a Fantasy, Science-Fiction, Rock Opera (10) featuring extreme and novel human performance acts combined with advanced 3D projection illusions. Worked with Marketing incorporate market research into creative solutions.

Concept Attraction Designer: Universal Studios Dubailand (2010)Researched, designed, modeled and animated live stunt show with special effects show. Included extensive queue representing a shipwreck experienced from the belly of a ship to the shores of a secret legendary islands of fierce Jins and Demons (11). Collaborated with stunt and circus performance and pyro special effects experts and show action engineers in developing one-of-a-kind feats and illusions.

Concept Designer: Universal Halloween Horror Nights (1991)Developed concepts for street acts and special effects for the original Halloween Horror Nights to be performed actors to augment evening Halloween events.

Creative Developer: NASA's Mission: LEAP @ TAMPA MOSI (2010)

For the NASA sponsored Mission:LEAP exhibit, we created a futuristic off-world colony set in the year 2060 to inspire the next-generation STEM Space Professional. As a NASA Co-Principal Investigator, producer and designer, supervised a full-scale mock-up that was tested for Tampa’s Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI) to experiment with emerging trends in family learning, social media, immersion role-playing and simulation games. The Interplay Instructional strategy was applied (see publications).

Concept Designer, Advisor: Water’s Journey (2006-2009)

For the NSF sponsored Water’s Journey, Mixed Reality simulations were integrated within the natural indoor habitats of the Museum of Discovery and Science (MODS) in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. Augmenting natural environments with simulated phenomenon-based interactions demonstrated the powerful impact Mixed Reality can have in expanding learning experience and expanding both the entertainment and educational value.

Investigator: Eva’s MemoryScape, Holocaust Museum (2005)

Eva’s MemoryScape was a prototype for interactive immersive story-telling that leveraged the digitization of physical artifacts with embedded media. The experience follows the footsteps of Eva, a child victim of the Jewish Holocaust to examine a Jewish teenager’s life leading up to the Nazi invasion, ghettos and concentration camps. Correlations were make to relate historical experience to modern life of an American teenager.

Inventor/Developer: Sea Creatures Experiential Make-Over (2003)

Invented the Mixed Reality Portal to expand the experiential engagement with a nearly static display to expand the depth of learning and expand the entertainment value with the use of computer games and virtual docents.

Digital Producer/Investigator: Measure Me Exhibit (2001)

The Orlando Science Center’s Measure Me Exhibit was upgraded with digital media stations to explore the use of statistics to explore math and visual analytics. Cognitive studies were conducted to examine the role of student centered learning in formal and informal learning landscapes.

Leveraging the MGM Experiential Movie Trailer and the Sea Creatures Mixed Reality Portals, immersive interactive experiences explored the entertainment, engineeering, performance and design value of new car brand for use in international car shows and experiment with future concepts in Virtual Showrooms .

Experience Designer: MGM Experiential Movie Booth (2003)

The experiential movie trailer. leveraged Mixed Reality simulations to demonstrate transmedia experiences with MGM content brands such as Flipper and Stargate to create experience that felt like a film, played like a game and immersed the whole family like a theme park.

Immersive Jukebox Inventor: House of Blues , Blues Schoolhouse (2000)

The Immersive Jukebox allowed young guests and their families to explore different genres of blues music (Vocal, Country, Urban and Mainstream) and create hybrid genres through dance and visual folk art triggered by different musician’s roles (Lead, backup, rhythm and melody).

Digital Producer for Doswell: IBM Interactive Marketing (1985-1986)

As the first Digital Producer for Doswell Productions, pioneered interactive computer graphics for IBM on the newly released PC and integrated relational databases with Graphical User Interfaces (GUI) for better usability prior to the invention of hypertext and the Worldwide Web.

Research Director, UCF Media Convergence Lab (1999-2007)

Envisioned, designed, supervised, demonstrated and published research pioneering the use of Mixed Reality as a form of emerging media. Wrote and was awarded grants from NASA, National Science Foundation, U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, Department of Education, State of Florida, Florida Innovation Corridor, Canon Inc. and many other sources. Modeled the future of Simulation production techniques for use in the burgeoning simulation industries of Central Florida, the Experiential Media capital of the world. In three years, built an internationally recognized laboratory raising and average of $1 million dollars per year in research funding building one of the most advanced Mixed Reality testbed of its kind as of 2003. It was the only American University that had access to the advanced Canon Mixed Reality HMD. Research applications included Training for Medical, Military and Civic services; Entertainment and Marketing; as well as therapy and rehabilitation. Currently the lab spawned as two new labs at the Institute for Simulation and Training: E2I and SREAL labs.

Director of Entertainment Research: UCF Institution for Simulation

Consulted for the institute to advance the arts and humanities research in simulation technology. Recruited and integrated the collaboration of most all the colleges of UCF and hosted international scholars on sabbatical from Asia and Europe. Recruited the participation of major entertainment studios and theme parks.

Founding Faculty, UCF School of Film and Digital Media

Instrumental in establishing the UCF Digital Media Program. As its first faculty member, wrote and prototyped original curriculum for teaching interactive entertainment, transmedia storytelling, digital media production and game design. Supervised undergraduate research in the area of experiential media, computer science and engineering.

Advised on early simulation research in Virtual Reality applying entertainment techniques to the development of military scenarios and the exploration of novel human performance measures. Recruited entertainment collaborators from the burgeoning Orlando area.

Executive Consultant: Blacksmith Guild of Western Maryland (2014)

Consulting Wallace Yater, BGWM founder & Maryland ALTA Award Winner (Achievements in Living Traditions and Arts) in organizing, designing and realizing a mountain campus for Amarican Crafts centered around blacksmithing and inspired by the Appalachian traditions of the WPA and CCC such as Penland and Black Mountain schools.

Founding President: Geneva Rural Heritage Center (2007-2010)

Founded and led the formation of the cultural heritage center (24) to advance the traditions of rural living and learning in harmony with nature. Restored historic 1920’s brick schoolhouse using rescued oak timbers struck down by Hurricane Charlie. Organized volunteer labor crews and experts to rezone and renovate for computer, art, music, dance, gardening and civic classes. Dance Hall and Rural Film Bijou revived interests in the dural living for the broader community. Led the effort to have County Commissioners pass a resolution recognizing the cultural and historical importance of the rural area, which reduced the threat of urban sprawl and awareness of ecological importance of the St. Johns River.

Expanded IEEE ISMAR Science and Technology Conference (25) to include Arts, Media and Humanities, which tripled the average attendance of the conference. Show Producer: Toon Lagoon, Islands of Adventure (1995-1999)

Was the “Vision Keeper” for the development of the guest experience for one of the five original islands in Universal Studios Islands of Adventures, This immersion within the Sunday Funnies included two rides, multipurpose theater, playground and multiple restaurants and retail promenade. The role was to inspired and manage a cross-disciplinary team of artists, engineers, architects, operations and maintenance specialists to produce full executable documents and facilitate and review quality control of the construction, installation, integration, test and adjust and guest feedback. Worked with markting and business development to refine stories and audience appeal to exceed expectations, but fit within the restraints of budgets and schedules.

Dudely Do-Right Ripsaw Falls, Aqua-Coaster

Ripsaw Falls (27) won Amusement Business Magazine’s Best Waterride in the World award for 14 years in a row (2001-2014) with its unique “Aqua-Coaster” design that produce the highest and scariest flume drop in the world. Characters from Jay Ward’s famous cartoon were brought to life for the first time in 3D to provide the thrills of rides and chills of Dudley’s narrow escapes from the dastardly villain.

Bluto’s Bilge-Rat Barges, Raft Thrill Ride

Bilge-Rat Barges was the first raft ride that was classified as a thrilll ride by thrillride.com and brought new life to a traditional soft ride. Using advance computer generated hydrodynamic modeling and creative direction, the rafts reached record speeds, spinning, turning and exploding with a culminating 10 foot drop that is unprecedented in raft rides. Animatronic characters spanned caverns, emerged from under water as well as spanned, dripped and squatted the guests.

Popeye’s “The Olive” multi-level immersive playground

The Olive provided a three level interactive play area modeled as a cartoon ship with climbable and playable cartoon props playing pianos, blowing horns, punching bluto, sliding down chutes and climbing cargo and nets over circling sharks.

Multiple restaurants and retails spaces provided seamless entertainment with interactive water features and original souvenirs modeled after the collection of over 100 licensed characters throughout the history of the Comic Strip.

Sr Art Director: Nick Recreation, Paramount Parks (1994-1995)

Supervised the design development of Nickelodeon’s SPLAT City at three Paramount Parks including Kings Island, Kings Dominion and Great America. This war the first venture for the newly formed Nickelodeon Recreation department in charge of the development of all intellectual properties offline including parks, resorts and merchandise. Created novel brand experience to uniquely enhance and complement the growing Nickelodeon television brand. Collaborated with water park engineers to develop novel use of hydraulics in the form of a “wet” playground. Many of the effects pioneered in this attraction are now in popular use in most water parks and summer attractions.

Art Director: SEGA @ Nickelodeon (1994)

Developed the brand experience for SEGA at the Nickelodeon Studios backlot tour and established the live/digital GAME LAB to recruit audience participations from Universal Studios and test new concepts in live/digital entertainment experiences. Group participation and spectator interactivity was combined with more traditional home game experience.

Design Director: The Edge, Emerging Tech Show (1993-1994)

In charge of designing and organizing an experiential make-over of the ACM/Siggraph Emerging Technology show called the EDGE (32). The exhibit included the integration of the latest research on the most advanced, real-time computer graphics and interactive techniques. Included was one of the first examples of the World Wide Web. Half of the exhibit included a devoted section of SIGkids, an international gathering of kids and computers with practicing thought leaders in the use of computers and K12 education.

Beetlejuice Graveyard Revue: Universal Studios Florida (1991)

Designed the original SFX Rock & Roll review of Universal Studios Monsters starring Beetlejuice called the Beetlejuice Graveyard Review. Reviving golden oldies from the monsters crypt. A creepy and abandoned monster movie set from the 1930’s magically transforms into a modern rock & roll stage. Collaborated with musical director, choreographer, stunt exports and SFX Pyro specialists to create rapid stage and costume changes in seconds converging the best from Broadway and Rock & Roll Concert illusion and technology.

The Rocky & Bullwinkle Show: Universal Studios Florida (1991)

The Hollywood streets of the Universal backlot explode with the antics of Rocky and Bullwinkle with the arrival of the studios new star’s mega-dressing room RV. Special effects and show action equipment unfold an entire performance stage with full size automated cartoon airplanes, Movie-making supply trucks and of course the trouble in the form of Boris and Natasha. The shows not complete without a full-blown fireworks explosion. in charge of conceiving the design, SFX and show action animation and the open air staging reveal.

Fievel Goes West Musical Revue: Universal Studios Florida (1991)

The transformation of the Fievel Musical Revue into a western style hootenanny to launch the newly released Fievel Goes West animated feature. Staging put together with oversized props and animated steam train made of tin cans, sewing spools and slides of banana peels. Designed staging to handle the stunt action of limited rubber walk around characters.

I Corsari Pirate Ride: Gardaland Italy (1991)

I Corsari Pirate Ride at the Gardaland theme park in Gardaland Italy. The project entailed the rapid design of an 11 minute 20 scene pontoon boat ride through the historic Caribbean and ghost ridden shipwrecks and treasure guarded by animated sea monsters. Supervised the design process from concept to construction drawings with full color scale model in a record 3 months (shorter than it took for contracts to be signed). Work was in collaboration with Museum Services and Richard Crane Productions.

Fairyland: Sanrio Puroland, Tokyo Japan (1990) for Landmark Entertainment

Featured Sanrio’s first venture into theme parks, Fairyland was a full service dinner theater restaurant nestled in ancient trees where guests view a Broadway scaled show paced with special effects, programmed lasers and show action reveals (40). This was one of many attractions within the 4 acre indoor theme park in the suburbs of Tokyo Japan.

Nickelodeon Studios Backlot Tour

Showcased as a family’s first Nickelodeon experience outside of a a television, the backlot studio tour was embedded with interactive displays and informative insights into the making of Nickelodeon Studios’s Kid’s World Headquarters. Challenges were achieved in collaborating with NYC executives in re-interpreting classic television moments of SLIME into a guest friendly amusement park experience.

Production Designer: Universal Studios Florida (1988-1990)As Production Designer, was in charge of interpreting classic Universal Movies and Television series into entertainment and educational experiences about the making of movies from pre-production to post production. Supervised architects, scenic fabrication, special effects, costumes, staging, writing and storyboarding. As Universal Studios first original theme park built from scratch, was a creative principal in the formation of Universal Studios Planning and Development Department, now Universal Creative. Three attractions set in the “studio” section of the park, became visitor’s first portals into the magic of movie making before cable television and the World Wide Web. In charge of conceiving novel illusion and effects within live, interactive and immersive cinema experiences.

Alfred Hitchcock 3D Cinema, Psycho Theater and Interactive Pavilion As a pioneer of 3D cinema and special effects, original and pioneering special effects were staged for guests to reenact Alfred Hitchcock’s movie making experiences from print, silver screen and television. Being attacked by birds; falling from the Statue of Liberty; thrown from a runaway carousel; attacked in the show with 16 camera coverage were interactive experiences staged for guests. Early examples of Mixed Reality were demonstrating the view of Jimmy Stewart from the film Rear Window (43).

Murder She Wrote Post Production StagesLeveraging improvisation and participatory theater techniques, the 4 post production stages engaged audience members in the post production process of one of the final scenes of Angela Lansbury’s Murder She Wrote episodes from editing, foley to ADR and final music mixing.

Designed and implemented improvements within their Real World Lab located in urban hospitals. Provided instruction in game design for medical training applications at department of computer science.

Founding Faculty: UCF Digital Media Program (2000-2007)

Took a leadership role in defining the vision of the Digital Media Program and designed core instructional experiences for Game Design, Transmedia Storytelling, Undergraduate Research Program, Media Convergence for the Internet and Digital Production Class (59). Contributed to the formation of the Florida Interactive Entertainment Academy in conduction with Electronic Arts (EA) games and the State of Florida. Directed professional development in the creative fields of simulation in first graduate program for Simulation and Training.

Research Faculty: Institution for Simulation and Training (1999-2007)

Partnered with industry organizations and leaders in the entertainment industry to provide support and collaborative partnerships for the advancement of Simulation Technology. Provided integration of the creative research in experiential media with cross industry applications such as training for medical, military and civic high-risk careers.

Instructor for Technical Theater: University of Rochester (1979)

Supervised the construction for the theatrical scenic elements for all productions and guided undergraduate interns in the design, build and operations of MainStage productions.
