A fourth online effort – with thanks for those who sent articles and pictures,

and a plea to others to join in – every little helps!

I've been trotting around looking at the gardens in the daily walk, although I’ve

been tempted to take secateurs to cut back brambles in some! I've grown

onions, broccoli, leeks, lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber, raspberries, strawberries

and the potatoes are almost ready. The garden looks a picture but I'm

desperate to actually chat to people! Maybe it'll come.

DON’T FORGET TO CONTACT OUR WELFARE AND DIABILITIES OFFICER if you know of any member that is very ill or in hospital; or has passed away. Magda Norris 07484658131 When you contact Magda, she will require the following information.

1. The name of the member.

2. Whether they are hospital bound or at home. If in hospital please let us have which hospital and ward name if possible.

3. Their illness or incapacity if known. Their address we can obtain from our data base It should be noted that no committee member will visit any member at home or in hospital without an invitation. However, we would like to be kept updated as to our member’s progress.

Also, if you know of any member who has passed away or has lost their partner, knowledge of this sad happening will help us to express our commiserations and support. Life in Pandemic Lockdown Part 3: July 2020

It’s July 9th -the 125th day since the Covid 19 Pandemic was declared!

Our U3A members have borne a great burden in adhering to the Lockdown

requirements, especially those of us who are in single households. And even

more so for those who were told to Shield for such a long time.

In spite of the naysayers, Lockdown restrictions have been eased to 1 Metre

plus mitigations: like face coverings, avoiding face to face contact, hand washing

,etc.

The recommendation is that where possible we should maintain the 2 Metres

social distancing. On all public transport a face covering is mandatory and this

makes perfect sense, especially for us seniors.

Restaurants, pubs, clubs, hairdressers are now open if safety measures are in

place.

Page 4: Stanford-le-Hope and District U3A · have asked Michael Farman to include it on our website. Each of us will decide whats best for them. Our groups will restart, maybe not in the

Stanford-le-Hope & District U3A –July 2020 Newsletter Page 4

It’s one thing to state these long-awaited easing measures; it’s quite another

thing to actually go out and try to resume some semblance of our lives before

Lockdown. If you are cautious and apprehensive about venturing out, please do

not worry, you are perfectly normal and you are not alone. A great many of us

will treat the easing news with trepidation. Except maybe, those of us ladies,

who are desperate to get their hair cut and coloured if the correct distancing

and screens are in place.

How long before you can actually get an appointment is another barrier to

normality.

The same will go for barbers, but most men have a barber’s kit at home and

whether it’s a self-inflicted hair cut or an obliging partner, we have managed to

keep our hair somewhat in check.

Can you believe some of our well-known TV personalities who have neglected

themselves so badly and now look like tramps?......

.I walked into the hairdressers and sat down in the chair. On the wall there was a sign that said: £70 for a haircut. The woman looked at my hair and said, "Hello, sir. How much would you like off?" I said, "’bout £55."

.I told her I wanted my hair cut like Tom Cruise...she gave me 2 cushions to sit on.

.My hairdresser got arrested for dealing drugs and running an escort service. Unbelievable, I’ve been a customer for years and I never knew he cut hair!........

Where was I?

…It may be best to let others be first to the restaurant, to the pub or the

cinema. Let’s see how it goes. When it comes to trusting the public to do what’s

right, so many have continually proven that they cannot be trusted, as even

during the height of the pandemic and Lockdown we saw so many who ignored

all safety measures with crowded beaches and beauty spots. Just the other

weekend we saw half a million flock to the Bournemouth beaches. Huge

demonstrations and overnight mass gatherings allegedly for a music event!

Page 5: Stanford-le-Hope and District U3A · have asked Michael Farman to include it on our website. Each of us will decide whats best for them. Our groups will restart, maybe not in the

Two metres?.....What two metres? You couldn’t make it up. They’ll be the

ones to cause a new wave of the Pandemic and put us all back to square one.

On the -plus side:

Your committee continue to meet by Zoom each month and we manage to keep

things ticking along. Our cancelled AGM is constantly on our minds but so many

things will have to fall into place to allow this to happen. The Springhouse

opened from the 4th July and with a members-only restriction in place. But will

us U3A members want to crowd into the hall? Lots of unknowns, especially

when it comes to meeting with others indoors. We’re going to try the bus and

train first to see how that works for us.

For U3A outdoor group gatherings there is a Covid19 Guidance and Risk Check

List for Outdoor Activities. 1.6.2020. It’s available from National Office and I

have asked Michael Farman to include it on our website. Each of us will decide

what’s best for them. Our groups will restart, maybe not in the form they once

were, but in a form that make them safe for us all. See Coronavirus tab on the

website.

We are missing our ambles and chatting with folks along the way or over a cuppa. It’s been four months now without them and looks to continue this way, until we are sure that we are safe to go out in a large group. We have been getting some exercise by walking around the block a few times and working in the garden in the nice weather. Lovely to enjoy walking amongst the peace and quiet of nature in the neighbourhood, especially without the traffic at the beginning of lockdown-it would be nice to keep this in an ideal world. Also, to see all the gardens looking so colourful. It really cheers you up! Stay safe everyone.

Throughout lockdown (writes Jenny Radford) we've spent a lot of time watching the antics of the birds in our garden and on the bird-feeders. They are a constant source of entertainment with their antics and squabbles, the long, leisurely wallows in the bird bath and now the newly fledged

youngsters trying out their wings. We also have squirrel visitors, so decided to put up a squirrel feeder too. It didn't take long for the squirrels to work out how to get to the food, it didn't take the magpies long either. We watched as both squirrels and magpies took the food from the feeder, then hid it elsewhere - much of it buried around the garden, in flower pots and in the lawn, to come back for later.

Watching the wildlife in our garden has been a constant source of entertainment and having this time to sit and observe and enjoy their behaviour has been a pleasure and an education. Photos by Jenny Radford Wednesday Boules Dave Jardine 01375 679410 It’s ages since we all got together, so let’s hope we can all meet very soon. The Springhouse is opening on the 4th July to members only; we will pop up to the Springhouse and see when we may be able start the boules group again. Some of our group have been playing boules in their garden – ‘they say that they win every game!’

Charity craft Jean Jardine 07551 952211

We have all been busy knitting, some have made hats and mittens for the shoe box appeal, or, like a lot of us in lockdown, knitting for our grandchildren or great grandchildren. Please remember that if you have been knitting and have any spare wool (it does not matter how small the amount) you could donate it to the charity craft group - just email me and I will pick it up. I enclose a photo of a pram cover I made for my great grandchild

Family History

Sue Green 01375 676441 Peter Craggs I am a churchwarden at St. Mary's Church in Corringham and a few years ago I wrote about 11 of the 12 names on the Great War Memorial in the church. These articles were published in The Link, our United Benefice church magazine. The reason I only wrote about 11 men was that I am unable to find out who was 'T. King'? If anyone knows who he was, who died in the Great War, please let me know.

During this Coronavirus lock down I, like most of us, have spare time on my hands so I have now started to research the 22 names on the Second World War Memorial in St. Mary's Church. I have attached a photograph of the memorial. I started off by looking at the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website, cwgc.org, which gives me a certificate that can be downloaded giving the name of the deceased, a

Page 9: Stanford-le-Hope and District U3A · have asked Michael Farman to include it on our website. Each of us will decide whats best for them. Our groups will restart, maybe not in the

photograph of the cemetery where they are buried, or if this is unknown, the memorial where their name is inscribed. They usually have a plan of the cemetery and details of their grave location. The certificate will also give the service that the person was in, their date of death and usually their next of kin. This website is free to use so can be searched by anyone.

To give an example of what can be found: Eric Edward Copping, was in the 4th Bn. Royal Norfolk Regiment who died on 11 August 1943 age 35. He was the son of Ernest and Ethel Copping, and husband of Evelyn Miriam Copping, of Corringham, Essex.

With this information I now know that it is the same person as on the church

memorial. With his death in 1943 age 35 I know he was born about 1908. The last census that is open to the public was taken in 1911 so I can look at that and found Ernest (his father) age 34, with his wife Ethel age 28 and their son Eric age 2 living in Clacton on Sea. I then looked at the 1939 Register,(this was taken in September 1939 just after the start of the war and used to issue Identity Cards, ration books etc). Every person in the country was recorded, giving their address, date of birth and occupation.

Page 10: Stanford-le-Hope and District U3A · have asked Michael Farman to include it on our website. Each of us will decide whats best for them. Our groups will restart, maybe not in the

Stanford-le-Hope & District U3A –July 2020 Newsletter Page 10

In the register I found Eric's parents, Ernest, a General Labourer, born 24 March 1878 and his wife Ethel born 11 February 1883 their address was 24 Rainbow Lane, Stanford le Hope, also living with them was Charlotte Davey, born 24 November 1860 a widow, this was Ethel's mother. I am now working on Eric's war service. I haven't found out much except that he was defending Singapore when the Japanese invaded in February 1942. I downloaded Eric's Prisoner of War record from when he was captured by the Japanese. This is all in Japanese with English translation. This gave his next of kin and also his date of birth 30 November 1908. He was put to work on the infamous Burma-Siam railway where, sadly he died in 1943 and is buried in Kanchanaburi War Cemetery in Siam, now Thailand. An estimated 13,000 prisoners of war died during its construction and an estimated 80,000 – 100,000 civilians also died in the course of the project. There are other websites that I can search Ancestry and Find My Past which have military records, The National Archives website also has many national records that can be searched on line, where I hope to find out more about Eric Copping.

Over the course of the next few months I hope to complete this project, and find out more than just a name on a memorial. Peter Craggs U3A Member Flower Arranging

The Flower arrangers continue to support each other by phone and online. This month’s brief was for us to use a container which we had not used before, in order to take us out of our comfort zone and try new styles. Although we have continued our monthly class, it’s so much better all being

together and helping one another especially with this brief!

French Conversation

Diane Wallace

Our group are continuing to meet for two video conferencing sessions on a

Thursday afternoon. We tend to discuss in French the present health situation,

what we have managed to do and what we miss the most.

In the break between the two sessions one of our members looks up the

vocabulary we weren’t sure of or didn’t know. I wanted to know why the word

oxen in French looked like the French word for beef that you eat and realised in

discussion that none of us was totally clear what an ox was. When an English

dictionary was consulted it said it was a castrated bull. So, it is not just

information about French language we are learning!

One of the ways to say a video conferencing session in French is ‘un réunion en

visio’.

Gardening Madeline Beesley 01375 678576 Potato Blight The Gardening Group are having a potato growing competition between its members this season. Back in March we all planted two seed potatoes and we planned to harvest them after about 12 weeks. Some of our group members recently noticed that the potato foliage was getting brown spots and marks and after consulting one of our resident experts we realized that it was the early stages of Potato Blight. Blight is caused by a fungus-like organism that spreads on the tubers of potatoes and also tomatoes in warm wet weather. We had to remove all the damaged foliage and we were told not to dispose of it in our compost bins as the blight can contaminate the compost. We were also advised not to use that same soil to grow potatoes for at least three years. We managed to harvest our potatoes and luckily the blight hadn’t spread and our potatoes were fine. So, if any members are growing potatoes, we would advise that you check your plants for blight.

Tips from the Old Gardener Don’t forget to keep deadheading your summer bedding plants and roses to prolong flowering.

You still have time to plant seeds for Dwarf Beans for a late summer crop. Also continue to sow lettuce, radishes and carrot seeds. They will soon grow in the warmer weather. Did you know Basil was used as a nerve tonic? It is also a stimulant and is known to settle the stomach and prevent nausea. A good tip is to eat a leaf or two before a party and hopefully you will have no after effects from over indulging. No guarantees though!

Golf Group Update

The frustrations of being a Golfer reared its ugly head during the lockdown.

During the winter months the Group has met albeit with fewer members

attending. We played in wet conditions and extremely wet conditions, and then

agreed at our last meet to use the Driving Range rather than have another

soaking of our feet. Then along came the Pandemic and of course the weather

changed for the better. The course dried out but we were unable to use the

facilities during March, April and May. Some of us were being Shielded so did

not meet during June on an official basis. Hence July is about to be here and we

can wait no longer.

Our next meeting will be held on Monday 6th July starting at an earlier time due

to the course being extremely busy at our normal time of 1pm. So we shall see!

Members will be informed of the start time and anybody else wishing to join us

will be welcome but let me know and I will let you know of the start times. The

Group will initially start as an informal Group as we have not had official

clearance from The Third Age Trust as yet so no insurance cover. It must be very

difficult to understand all of the regulations coming out from HM Government

so we shall leave it to them. We have attracted a few new members during

lockdown with one even buying a set of clubs in readiness to join us on the

course. We only hope for fine weather from now on.

Carol Lockyer 01375 674732

Unfortunately, we are going to miss our sixth anniversary celebration. There will definitely be some making up to do in the future after Covid-19 as we just love our get-togethers.

Carol and Mary started the line dancing group on 23 July 2014 with just nine members coming to our first session. The group has really grown in numbers and proved to be a very popular and successful group. We have missed so many weeks now but

no doubt our feet will know where to go when we hear the music once again! We are keen and eager to return and see each other once more but, like all of the U3A, we have to wait until the government advice changes. Hopefully not too long now! Photos taken by Mary in 2014

Local Research Projects

Diane Wallace

Sue Green 01375 676441

This month instead of a meeting in Thurrock Museum, Diane has been involved

in a video conferencing session with the Thurrock Heritage Group. The Heritage

group is looking at how to increase links between the local heritage

organisations, digitising parts of the collections and the possibility of making

some of them accessible to the public. At the present time this is not of

relevance to our U3A interest group, but it is encouraging to know what is going

on locally and keeps us in contact with local knowledgeable people interested in

the history of the area.

The U3A Local Research Projects group are investigating the changes and

growth of Stanford-le-Hope from 1950. We have finished transcribing word for

word our many recorded interviews which we aim to eventually deposit in the

Essex Archives along with the recordings. We are now pulling all the interview

information together under various categories and this allows us to see what

topics need more detail.

Can you help is fill in some of the gaps about:

• the Salvation Army Church

• St Margaret’s Hall

• the Girls’ Friendly Society Hall

Do you have knowledge or memories about these places, or do you know

someone who does and might be willing to help us? Have you any photos

taken at or in the places?

The sort of information that would be useful would be:

• History of the place and organisation

• Description of the building inside/outside

• Memories and descriptions of events/use of the building

• Anything else that might bring the place alive to readers

Just one paragraph worth on one of these places and one aspect of it in an

email or in writing would be helpful but if you could provide more please do.

Contact us by email or phone to find out more.

Jeanette Yallop has very kindly provided us with details about the off-licence her

father ran in Southend Road and that complements the interview she gave us.

Thank you, Jeanette and all our members who have helped us. It is much

appreciated.

Hello Walkers,

Today we could have been on another of our London Walks but instead we

are still extremely restricted to what we can and can't do, so it isn't

happening.

However this has given us time to plan ahead and we believe that we have

some interesting walks lined up for when we do start again. Hopefully

that will not be too far into the future.

In the meantime stay safe and well, and have those masks ready.

Best wishes to all,

I had a call from the Hirer of the Methodist Church Hall asking if we wanted to

keep our hire agreement for the future. I have said yes in the hope that we will

be able to meet sometime this year. Thankfully there will be no cost while we

cannot use the venue, but we will have somewhere to meet if things change.

I hope that many of you will be seeing friends and family since the changes in

the social distancing. I am sending a picture of some Easter cards I made, this

technique is called 'Iris Folding', we have done this together in group.

I am liking the items that members have sent in for the newsletter, Keep on

The new Lockdown measures came into force on the 4th of July and I thought

why the 4th July?

It’s obviously American Independence Day but that means little to most of us

Brits. So what’s to be remembered about this date for us? Here’s a few worthy

ones.

• 1862 – Lewis Carroll First Tells the Story of Alice in Wonderland On July 4, 1862, Carroll took 10-year-old Alice Liddell, who was the daughter of Henry George Liddell, Dean of Christ Church, and her two sisters on a boating picnic and told them a story about a girl named Alice who falls down a rabbit hole and lands in a magical place called Wonderland. Alice loved the story and demanded that he write it out. He did, and three years later it was published. It was a huge success and it is credited with launching modern children’s literature.

• 1884 – France Transfers Ownership of the Statue of Liberty to the United States.

Page 23: Stanford-le-Hope and District U3A · have asked Michael Farman to include it on our website. Each of us will decide whats best for them. Our groups will restart, maybe not in the

In a ceremony on July 4, 1884, the French government offered the statue to American Ambassador Levi P. Morton. They even offered a warship to ship the statue to the United States, including an offer to cover the cost. Morton, on behalf of the American government, accepted the statue. Bartholdi then decided that his statue should be used as a gift to the Americans and he tried to get money from the French government to construct it, but they weren’t interested. So Bartholdi started to fund raise money to build it on his own. After construction started in 1876, Bartholdi sold tickets to see the construction of the statue in his workshop, along with souvenirs to fund the project. It was only in 1880, when the construction was half-finished, that the French government swooped in and ensured the rest of the funding!

• 1950 – Radio Free Europe First Broadcasts.

Radio Free Europe first broadcast on July 4, 1950, from Munich, West

Germany, into Czechoslovakia. A short time later, their broadcast was

translated into 15 different languages and transmitted into other countries

behind the Iron Curtain. In 1951, Radio Liberty was launched and it

specifically targeted the Soviet Union, while Radio Free Europe continued

to target satellite countries.

Obviously, the communist governments didn’t like this and often tried to jam

the radio signals and even bombed the stations. But in the end, Radio Free

Europe and Radio Liberty proved to be the victor.

• 1997 – The Mars Pathfinder Lands on Mars.

On December 4, 1996 at 1:58:07 am EST, NASA launched the Mars

Pathfinder from Cape Canaveral, Florida. It had an uneventful journey and

landed on the Ares Vallis plain of Mars on July 4, 1997. On board the

Pathfinder was the Sojourner rover which became the first vehicle to

operate outside of the Earth and the Moon.

The last communication from the Pathfinder was received on September 27,

1997, and the results of the Pathfinder mission was that 2.3 billion bits of

information about Mars was sent back to Earth. This included 16,500 pictures

and 8.5 million measurements of the atmospheric pressure, temperature, and

wind speed.

• Finally: 1776 - The declaration of Independence.

It might make for an iconic

painting, but that famous image of

all the Founding Fathers and

Continental Congress huddled

together, presenting the first draft

of the Declaration of Independence

for a July 4, 1776 signing isn't quite

how things really happened. As

famed historian David McCullough

wrote, "No such scene, with all the delegates present, ever occurred at

Philadelphia."

In 1776, Trinity Church burned to the ground during the British assault. In 1976,

Queen Elizabeth II visited the site, where she was given 279 years in back rent….

in peppercorns!! (The original 1697 church charter called for rent of one

peppercorn per year.)

Did you know that America has no official language?

Although many states have adopted English as their state language it’s not

English nationwide.

In 1780, John Adam’s proposal to the Continental Congress that English be

made the official language of the U.S. was deemed, “undemocratic and a threat

to individual liberty!”

Paul Brice 07788 452852

Jean Jardine 01375 679410

If you have an idea for a new interest group, or would like to lead (perhaps as

part of a team) a completely new group or another version of an existing group

(in order to eliminate a waiting list) please contact Paul or Jean.

Please let your interest group leader know if you no longer wish or cannot

attend their group on a permanent basis or are likely to have a prolonged

absence. Your name can be taken off a full group’s list if you have not attended

for 3 months without notifying the group leader, and you can then be replaced

by another member who is on the waiting list for that interest group

Dates of General Meetings

These are on the second Thursday of the month at The Springhouse Club

from 2.00pm until 4.00pm.

So a few weeks ago, as we couldn’t go to the beach, we brought it to us instead. The old decking was

ripped up and Scottish pebbles were delivered and scattered (or as Mark has corrected me artistically

placed) in the garden. We now just need to replicate the sea , somehow, I don’t think the fish will

appreciate us paddling in their pond! Mark and Deb Foster
