High School News & Honor Roll...Northeast Michigan Art Council held an “Area-Wide Youth Art Exhibit” on May 9 & 16. This is a wonderful motivator for area students and gives them the opportunity to showcase their artwork in a gallery setting. Standish Elementary Honor Roll & News...4th Marking Period

Standish EL 2nd Graders go to Thumb OctabarnStudents were able to see, hear, touch (and smell!) a variety of live farm animals, including sheep, goats, horses of all sizes, pigs, rabbits, and donkeys. Information was presented about the uses of the animals such as pets, meat, other foods, fiber, work, and recreation. Students also learned about the food and care the various animals require and the origin of some of the species. Second graders saw a display of live bees in their protective hives. Discussion took place on hives and structure of the workers, drones, and queen. The bee’s purpose is to pollinate nature’s fruits and flowers, resulting in honey for people to eat! At the sawmill museum, students met a live shanty boy (lumberjack) who talked about the life of a shanty boy during the lumbering era in Michigan. Students saw pictures from the era and many tools that were used in the forest to get the logs to the sawmill. The presentation featured stories of Paul Bunyan and Indian Dave. The story of the fire of 1881 concluded the presentation. The presenters demonstrated what the settlers had to go through to put a roof over their heads. Students were given an idea of what life was like in the late 1700’s and 1800”s and saw the tools used to cut down trees and compared them to the tools used today. Finally, the Sawmill was fired up so students could see what it took to provide the lumber used in building. Fun was had by all! A big thank you goes out to the Standish PTK for funding the transportation and the entry cost!

ACTING UP THEATER COMES TO STANDISH ELWith a rescheduled performance date due to a power outage, the Standish Elementary second and fourth graders had the opportunity once again to have the Acting Up Theater come into their classrooms. Six classrooms were able to pick a legend and create a play. Students were able to experience all aspects of the theater such as creating the play, making props, and performing the play. Students performed for the entire Standish Elementary, parents, grandparents, and friends in the high school auditorium. By having the Acting Up Theater come into the classrooms, an enjoyable, educational, and enriching theater experience was provided for all. A special thank you goes out to the Standish PTK for paying for the Acting Up Theater costs and for the transportation to and from the high school.

This spring, third graders at Standish Elementary had the opportunity to take part in The ThinkFirst program. This National Injury Prevention Foundation, in partnership with St. Mary’s of Michigan, is an award-winning, evidence-based program aimed at helping people learn to reduce their risk for injury. ThinkFirst programs educate young people about their personal vulnerability and the importance of making safe choices. You can have a fun-filled, exciting life, without hurting yourself if you “ThinkFirst.” Tami Bersano, certified instructor of the ThinkFirst program, made 5 visits to each third grade classroom discussing the importance of buckling up, avoiding violent situations, wearing a helmet, and checking the water before you dive. At the end of the 5 week session, each third grade student was fitted with their own personal bicycle helmet provided by a generous donation from First Merit Bank. Thanks to the ThinkFirst program and its sponsors for offering this educational opportunity!

Wildlife Visits First Graders On April 30th the first graders in Mrs. Grier, Mrs. Gulvas and Mrs. Kusey’s classrooms enjoyed a visit from Ruth Fruehauf, a volunteer from the A.R.K., which stands for “Association to Rescue Kritters”. The organization rescues orphaned or injured wild animals, rehabilitates them and releases them back into the wild. Ruth was able to bring four live birds to share with the class, including a red-tailed hawk and several types of owls. They learned about the importance of our wildlife, along with ways we can keep our wildlife alive and happy in a healthier environment.

‘HIIT’ the road to fitness with six-week programHigh Intensity Interval Training

HIIT is a six-week cross-training program to develop and tone muscles and increase cardiovascular capacity. No equipment is needed for this program led by personal trainer Tim Barnum, but participants may want to bring a yoga mat or towel for floor exercises.

No two workouts in this six-week program are the same, making it fun for participants, as well as a great supplement to endurance or resistance training.

Classes consist of a total-body circuit on the first session of the week and a workout focused on upper body, core or lower body muscles on the second session of the week.

Classes held Sunday and Thursday at Standish-Sterling MIddle School starting July 12. For more information, call 989-240-0283.

Let’s Zumba for fitness on Tuesdays If you are looking for a high-energy way to dance yourself to total

body fitness, Zumba is for you. Zumba is the only Latin-inspired dance fitness program that blends red-hot international music in the form of a “fitness party.”

Classes will be held on Tuesdays from 6:35-7:35 p.m. in the Middle School cafeteria. The cost is $5.00 per class.

Girls Vollyball Camp ~ Hosted by NorthwoodS.S.C.E. and the SSC VB Program will be offering a satellite youth

volleyball camp, hosted by Northwood University. The camp will be offered for girls in 1st-8th grades from July 13-15 and will be held at the Standish-Sterling High School gym.

Grades 1-4 will attend from 9-11:30am and Grades 5-8 will attend from 12:30-3:00pm. The camp will cost $55 to participate. For more information, please contact Coach Becky Murphy at 846-4526 or the Community Ed office at 846-3644.

Summer Track ..... June 22-25S.S.C.E. will hold a summer track program for boys and girls ages

7-14. Practices will begin on Monday, June 22 and run through Thursday, June 25, from 8:30-10:30am at the high school track. All summer track athletes will receive a free t-shirt.

Youth Track Meet will be at Tawas on THUR, June 25 @ 4:00pm. Parents must provide transportation to and from all practices and for the meet. Cost is $25.00. Please make checks payable to S.S.C.E. For more information, please contact the Community Ed office at 846-3644.

Summer Rec will run June 8th - July 2ndThere is a $5 sign-up fee for Summer Recreation again this year.

The program will be on MON-TUES-WED-THUR each week and will be held at the high school. An adult must accompany children under 9 years of age. It will run from June 8th thru July 2nd.

The cost on MON-TUES-THUR (10a-3:30p) is $5 each day and children will need to bring their own lunch on these days. Morning activities (10a-12p) include sports, crafts, board games. Afternoon activities (12:30-3:30p) will include games, movies and swimming.

WEDNESDAYS are our special event days (9a-3:30p) and the cost varies depending on the activity planned. For more information, please contact the Community Ed office at 846-3644.

More activities are planned during the Summer months (i.e. Golf Clinic, Lifeguarding Class, Swimming Lessons, Wrestling Camp, Youth Soccer, etc...).

All American Vollyball Camp ~ grades 9-12The camp will be offered for girls in 9th-12th grade. It will be held

at the SSC High School gym on July 16,17,18 from 9:00am-3:00pm. The total cost is $155.00. It is hosted by the All American Volleyball Camp. For more information, please contact Coach Becky Murphy at 989-646-1757.

Flag Football Tournament July 28-30The Standish-Sterling Football Program is sponsoring a

Developmental Summer Flag Football Tournament for all children in grades 4th-7th. All divisions are coed.

There will be two days of practice on July 28th & 29th from 5-7pm. The tournament will be played on July 30 at 6pm. Practices will take place on the high school practice field and the tournament will take place on the high school football field.

The cost is $25 per player and each player will receive a mouthpiece and a team t-shirt. Please make checks payable to Standish-Sterling Community Education. For more information, please contact Coach Kraatz at 989-314-3042.

“Little Panthers Football Camp” or boys & girlsSSCE will be offeing a “Little Panthers Football Camp for students

in grades 1-3. The camp will be will be held at the high school practice field on July 7th & 8th from 5:00-6:30pm. The cost is $15.00 per student.

The purpose of this camp is to introduce all children to the game of football. This is a great learning experience and an excellent way to get your child active throughout the summer. Yoga classes meet on WednesdaysThis 6-week session of Yoga classes are held on Wednesdays from

6:30-7:30pm in the Middle School, Room 19. Course Instructor Jodee Mitrzyk will be teaching gentle stretching for beginner yoga participants. Come stretch with friends and relax yourself into night time. The cost will be $42.00 for the 6-week session, or $7.00 per class as a drop-in. 10th Annual Prom Lock-In Party is another SUCCESS!!!This year, 155 students attended the Post-Prom Lock-In Party. After dancing the night away in their finest attire, these students made the right choice and attended our Prom Lock-In! From midnight until 5:00 am our students enjoyed food, games, crafts, The Velcro Wall, Gladiator Jousting, movies, Giant Twister, and some SSC game shows! Without your generous donations of cash and prizes, our Lock-In would not have been possible. The Standish-Sterling Central High School Student Council would like to thank the many businesses and individuals who made donations to this year’s Post-Prom Lock-In Party. Your help allowed us to provide this year’s entertainment and give out lots of prizes – thank you so much for all you do to support the students of our schools!

Standish & Sterling GSRP Preschool news....The Standish and Sterling GSRP Preschool children went to the Hagley Farm for their last field trip of the school year. The children fed hay to the cows and fed the baby calves with bottles. They also held chickens and sat in the driver seat of a combine. The owners of the farm treated the children to ice cream and each child was given a goodie bag to take home. It was a wonderful field trip and the preschool sends the Hagley farm a huge thank you for letting us visit and for their generosity!
