1. Background

Purpose and Background– To maximize consumer benefits on using single peripheral like a

charger by integrating I/O connection interfaces that are different among each manufacturer

– To minimize the wasting of both costs and resources by leading customers to reuse the peripherals.

– To promote developing new products and improve the technical competitiveness of mobile phones and devices.

4. Conclusion

Why ? – Single I/O connection interface of various kinds of mobile/portable devices

• To maximize user convenience

• To reduce cost of mobile devices

• To minimized the wasting of resources

What ?- Further collaboration on integrated I/O connection interface

- Potential collaboration among CJK

- Potential collaboration with GSMA UCS initiatives

- Forward compatibility with UCS can be considered.

Annex: GSMA Universal Charging Solution (UCS) plan

During MWC ’09, UCS initiatives was launched.– Major vendors and operators

• Nokia, Samsung, LG, Motorola, SONY-Ericsson, Qualcomm

• Vodafone, T-mobile, Orange, 3, Telefonica, AT&T, Telenor, KTF, Telstra, Mobilkom Austria, Telecom Italia

– Electrical & Mechanical Interface: Micro USB• Details will be discussed: charging only, charging and data, etc.

– Target completion date: 2012

Effects– Elimination of 5100 tons of duplicated chargers

– 50% reduction of standby energy

– Reduction of 13.6 M tones of greenhouse gas per year• Assumption: 1.2 B mobile phone @2008, 50-80% are replacements
