It is fitting that this year’s celebration coincided with the 50th anniversary of the 1967 referendum, which introduced constitutional change aimed at bringing equality to all Australians.

This year, Stamp Collecting Month takes place in August. The subject of the stamp issue this year is Dragonflies, nature’s amazing flying machines. These mesmerising insects belong to an ancient group that has evolved over 300 million years.

In 1917, a 1,690-kilometre railway line was completed to connect Western Australia with the eastern states; the Trans-Australian Railway ran from Port Augusta, in South Australia, to Kalgoorlie in the west. It crossed the sparsely vegetated Nullabor Plain and had taken more than five years to complete. The stamp designs feature advertising posters from 1930 and 1960, used to promote the Trans-Australian Railway as a much faster and more comfortable method of travel.

In July we release a Norfolk Island stamp issue that features two native flora species of the territory. Meanwhile, in August we focus on things maritime, with an issue marking two early voyages to Christmas Island – William Mynors on board the Mary in 1643, and William Dampier on board the Cygnet in 1688 – and an Australian shipwrecks issue. The three stamps in the latter issue remind us of the treacherous conditions faced by early seafarers and passengers. Only one-quarter of the more than 8,000 wrecks in Australian waters have ever been located; a prestige booklet published with the Shipwrecks stamp issue tells some of these fascinating stories.

In this July edition of the Stamp Bulletin we feature the 2017 Australian Legends stamps, with information on each of the three recipients of this year’s award. These outstanding individuals are recognised for advancing the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The Australian Legends Award traditionally coincides with Australia Day. This year the Legends announcement coincides with the 50th anniversary of the 1967 referendum.

In 2017, the Australia Post Australian Legends Award honours three individuals who have worked tirelessly to improve social and economic outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

For more than 40 years Tom Calma AO has championed the rights, responsibilities and welfare of Indigenous Australians. Between 2004 and 2010 he was Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner at the Australian Human Rights Commission, and Race Discrimination Commissioner. He has operated at local, state, national and international levels, particularly in the areas of health, education, reconciliation and economic development.

Lowitja O’Donoghue AC CBE became the first Aboriginal trainee nurse at the Royal Adelaide Hospital in 1954, after fighting the ban on Aboriginal Australians. She joined the federal Department

of Aboriginal Affairs after the 1967 referendum, becoming director of the department's South Australian region. She was founding chair of the National Aboriginal Conference and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission, and for seven years the most senior Aboriginal person in public office.

Galarrwuy Yunupingu AM came to prominence in 1970 when he acted as court interpreter for the first litigation on traditional land rights in Australia; the case was significant in leading to the passing of the Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act 1976. In 1975, he joined the Northern Land Council to represent traditional Aboriginal landowners and people, which he chaired for 25 years. He has led negotiations with mining and government to advance Indigenous wellbeing, advocating the development of Aboriginal land on terms set by the traditional owners.

In 2017, it will be 100 years since the completion of the 1,690-kilometre transcontinental railway between Port Augusta, in South Australia, and Kalgoorlie, in Western Australia. This significant piece of infrastructure was officially opened on 22 October 1917, but had been planned many years before. Prior to Federation, in 1901, Western Australia had been reluctant to join the new Commonwealth of Australia, but it was persuaded with the promise of a transcontinental rail link facilitating closer communication with the eastern states.

The first sod was turned at Port Augusta on 14 September 1912, the beginning of five years of arduous construction work across the Nullarbor desert.

The stamps in this issue feature advertising posters from 1930 and 1960: the first shows a figure on a camel viewing a locomotive as it speeds across the desert towards Perth; the second shows the first diesel locomotive GM1. The posters convey the optimism and aspiration of the new rail service, which would bridge east and west, and facilitate the supply of goods to isolated areas of South Australia.

The Trans-Australian Railway provided a vital link for overseas mail. Until 1917, the “first and last” port-of-call for most overseas shipping was Adelaide, from where mail was transported by rail to and from eastern Australia. With the opening of the Trans-Australian Railway, Fremantle replaced Adelaide as the “first and last” port-of-call, which significantly reduced the transit time for overseas mail.

The Trans-Australian Railway’s “tea and sugar train” provided stamp sales, money orders and banking facilities for railway employees working along the line. The train’s post office, which operated to 1986, was the middle section of one carriage. It had a small public area and a foothold to reach the counter, when the train stopped between stations.

Norfolk Island is a 35-square-kilometre island located in the Pacific Ocean around 1,400 kilometres east of the Australian mainland. Together with tiny Phillip Island and Nepean Island it forms one of Australia’s external territories. Originally covered with subtropical rainforest, today most of the remaining natural areas are confined to the Norfolk Island National Park and Botanic Garden. Around 200 plants are native to Norfolk Island, including 45 that are endemic. Two feature in this stamp issue.

A medium to large tree, Lagunaria patersonia, a member of the hibiscus family, is covered in small pink and mauve flowers in spring and summer. This common tree is also native to Lord Howe Island and is cultivated in many parts of the world.

Endemic to Phillip Island, the critically endangered Hibiscus insularis has been planted widely on Norfolk Island. This large shrub flowers for most of the year, bearing beautiful cream to light green blooms, with a dark magenta centre, that turn pinkish or purple as they age.

Stamp Collecting Month

Dragonflies

1942209Roll of 100 (s/a)$100

This year’s theme for Stamp Collecting Month is dragonflies, one of the most striking groups of the insect world. Of the 6,000 or so known species worldwide, there are about 325 species in Australia.

The order, Odonata, is basically made up of two suborders: Anisoptera (dragonflies) and Zygoptera (damselflies). To the untrained eye, they look remarkably similar. The true dragonflies, however, are larger than damselflies, have broader hindwings than forewings, especially at the base, and they rest with their wings outstretched. They are also more powerful fliers. The smaller, lighter damselflies generally fold their evenly-sized wings close along their abdomens when at rest, for unlike dragonflies they have a hinge on their wings.

Although titled Dragonflies, this stamp issue represents the two suborders. The Arrowhead Rockmaster is the sole

damselfly featured. The issue also includes one giant dragonfly, the Beautiful Petaltail, which is one of five giant dragonfly species endemic to Australia. The selection of species is based on visual and taxonomic diversity – each species belonging to a different genus, spanning four families. The stamp designs show male dragonflies, which are often more spectacular in colouration than females.

In 1643, the East India ship Mary (also known as Royal Mary and captained by William Mynors), sailed past an island in the Indian Ocean. The ship’s anonymous log tells of a sighting at 3am on 25 December and states, “… because it was Christmas Day we called it … Christmas Iland [sic]”. Maps started appearing with “Christmas I” (or similar) from 1671, yet it was not until after the mid-19th century that “Christmas Island” became the established name.

In 1688, William Dampier, on board the Cygnet, sailed

close to this “small woody island”. He recorded his impressions in his famous tome, A New Voyage Round the World (1697). The Cygnet couldn’t anchor because of deep water, but two canoes were sent ashore for a few hours. The crew returned with wood to repair the ship’s pump, as well as birds and enormous crabs to eat. The sketch used on the minisheet was published by Daniel Beeckman in 1718, after he sailed past the island in 1714. His written description was considered one of the most accurate, until the 19th century.

Australia automatically protects shipwrecks in its waters that are more than 75 years old, including associated relics. This protection exists in order to preserve the historical, archaeological and educational value of these sites and artefacts. Only one-quarter of the more than 8,000 wrecks in Australian waters, however, have actually been located. Those that have provide important insights into the social, economic and maritime context of the time.

During the 17th and 18th centuries, the Dutch East India Company (VOC) dominated the seas. Several of their trading ships fell victim to the treacherous coast of Western Australia, including the Zuytdorp, which wrecked sometime in June 1712. She was carrying a cargo of valuable silver coins, en route to what is now known as Jakarta, Indonesia, to trade in rare and exotic spices. Although

it is thought that there were survivors, no one ever reached the destination to report the wreck.

HMS Pandora was tasked with the dangerous mission of capturing the infamous Bounty mutineers. After the crew had captured 14 of the 25 insurgents, the Pandora was headed home to England, when she struck the Great Barrier Reef, while attempting to pass through to the Torres Strait, finally sinking on 29 August 1791.

The paddle steamer Clonmel was arguably the first luxury steamship to operate in Australian waters. On 1 January 1841, she struck a sandbar on the east coast of Victoria. All 80 on board were saved. The subsequent publicity helped spread the word that a viable access point existed to the rich grazing land of what is now known as Gippsland.
