Q2 2018

“We are pleased with

how well the project is

progressing.”

With the official kickoff of the Canada Wide Demonstration Project well underway, we felt it’s time to showcase this pivotal project. iGEN has successfully secured the necessary approvals to proceed with the demonstration. The i2 units will be installed in 60 homes across Canada, which have undergone rigorous performance and safety testing to ensure all requirements of the authorities having jurisdiction are met. With support from utility partners, the application form for demonstration hosts will be available on utility portals for all utility friends and family. As stated by Sina Mohammadi, “We are pleased with how well the demonstration project is progressing. Sending the application through an intranet database will ensure iGEN receives maximum exposure”. An external application package has also been created for non-utility members and is available upon request. A project info sheet is available to stakeholders and the public for better engagement with demonstration. Homeowners interested in becoming a demonstration host must complete an application, providing basic information to evaluate compatibility between project objectives and the home. iGEN will screen applications, and selected homeowners will be invited to join the iGENeration and become acquainted with all aspects of the project prior to contract signing.

This past quarter, numerous key objectives and certification approvals have been met, enabling iGEN to maintain a steady momentum with all operations. As the team prepare to deploy units in the field, certification approval guarantees that units are fully functional, safe, and fit for home installation. Careful due diligence when designing and assembling the unit allows for a fully streamlined transition between certification approval and upcoming deployment. Meeting these milestones allows iGEN to continue with the next steps for the Canada-Wide Demonstration Project. Based on accelerated durability and performance testing results from the past 3 months, “we are pleased with the increase in power output over the previous design. The upcoming demonstration project will be an exciting platform for iGEN to showcase innovative heat and power generation technology”, said Patrick Lai P.Eng, co-founder of iGEN.

Across the Globe: Inventory Delivered from the UK to iGEN

Assets obtained from the acquisition of the UK based Flowgroup plc arrived to iGEN ready for unloading in May. Inventory traveled from the UK to Canada by ocean freight, then to iGEN’s workshop via two large transport trucks. With the entire iGEN team working to help unload and stack the units, quick work was made of the entire process.

Perspectives from the Floor: Front Line Assembly Insights

While the main focus has been the production of i2 units for upcoming demonstration on the engineering side of iGEN; the team has been involved in improving the design and functionality of the i2. Changes are continually being made to integrate versatility into the i2 system so that the unit can be installed in a variety of markets and situations. Most recently, anticipating future market conditions, the i2 was wired to perform in both metered and non-metered environments. iGEN’s engineering team is dedicated to anticipating and addressing future market concerns and conditions in the world’s heating industry to maintain a competitive edge against competitors.

“Production is progressing at a steady pace. We anticipate shipment of the units to demonstration hosts by the end of summer.”

Patrick Lai, Co-Founder & CTO

With successful receipt of inventory components, iGEN has developed a supply chain management strategy to ensure i2 units are manufactured according to schedule. To date, iGEN has completed the necessary steps required to modify the Flow units for integration into the i2 system. From fabricating and installing new components, to uploading software, to performing testing and vinyl wrapping the VEC module, the iGEN team has made great progress in preparing the units for deployment. Patrick Lai, Chief Technology Officer at iGEN has quoted, “Production on the first batch of units for the demonstration project is progressing at a steady pace. The iGEN team and suppliers have been instrumental in pulling things together in a timely manner. We anticipate shipment of the units to demonstration hosts by the end of summer for installation.”

The growing iGEN team has been integral in the success of this operating quarter. Last quarter, Vassil, Alan, Justin, and four engineering and business interns joined iGEN in their operations. During the busy days of inventory delivery, the additional 7 team members aided greatly in the unloading, transporting, and stacking of the new units, as well as the modification of the units to serve the i2 system. While the engineering team is focused on preparing the units for demonstration, the business and marketing development within iGEN has been focused on developing clear strategic plans for future growth of the business and commercialization, as well as creating contents for knowledge dissemination purposes. With many new developments underway, iGEN’s newly designed and revamped website provides a channel for visitors and customers to engage with the #iGENeration and stay up to date with the latest activities and projects. Through the new website, iGEN has received attention from across the globe. The website is regularly monitored and updated, and all information requests are resolved in a timely manner to develop a strong customer facing image that will be integral when iGEN begins commercial sales. In addition, iGEN has developed case studies with the results from validation testing at the Canadian Centre for Housing Technology in Ottawa and Kortright Centre in Vaughan for distribution to stakeholders and the public for effective knowledge dissemination. These changes would not have been possible without iGEN’s expanded human capital and pave the path for many new developments for the upcoming quarter.

Testing Underway

Over 10 different performance and safety tests are being conducted at iGEN’s test bay to prepare the units for commercial demonstration. The units are closely monitored under a variety of scenarios to ensure optimal performance in all environments. Testing occurs systematically to meet and exceed certification requirements.
