Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience

Internship: place in curriculum

 Period 1: 5 Sept. until 28 Oct. à 2 courses Period 2: 31 Oct. until 23 Dec. à 2 courses Period 3: Academic Skills & Research proposal

Then: RESEARCH INTERNSHIP à if prerequisites are met à From Period 4 (February) to ~July

Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience

What is the research internship?

Students are required to conduct a research project that involves:

1) planning, 2) conducting, and 3) analyzing the results of the student’s ownresearch project.

This work will result in an individually written 4) master’s thesis (in English).

Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience

1) Planning

• The full empiric cycle will be followed • The student comes up with his/ her own research

question; • In case of a duo internship, both students should

formulate and investigate their own research question. • In case of participation in ongoing research, the student

also formulates his/her own research question. • The research question must be a scientific question that

can be answered within the research project.

Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience

2) Conducting• The extent of the internship should be in accordance

with the number of EC (~ 40 EC total for internship; 1 EC = 28 hours)

• You preferably test participants. If not possible, data must be at least originating from participants (e.g., in research with databases, questionnaire research, existing image and sound material).

• If this is neither possible (e.g., a meta–analysis), more emphasis must be put on one or more other parts of the empirical cycle (e.g., more advanced statistics, and/or more background/ introduction to the topic, leading to the research question).

Page 3: Stagevoorlichting 21.09.16[1] (Alleen-lezen) searchingin time. Orientation starts around today Where: Maastricht University, withone of the staff members Externalinstitute in the Netherlands,

20-09-16

3

Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience

2) Conducting cont’d

• The number of participants is preferably related to the power calculation in the research

• But should not be a leading criterion for a good research internship.

• The number of participants should be scientifically valuable yet also practically doable within the time frame of the internship. The student has to make efforts to reach the desirable number.

• This accounts for a minimum number of participants, but also for a maximum number of participants.

Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience

3) Analyzing

• Statistics should be in accordance with the research design: students must be able to answer the research question/ hypotheses with corresponding, adequate statistical methods.

• Accordingly, different statistical methods are used in qualitative and quantitative research, respectively.

Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience

4) Master’s thesis

• The master’s thesis should be individually written, in the English language.

• The master’s thesis needs to meet both the formal guidelines (e.g., length between 7000-9000 words) and the content guidelines.

• See also the handbook writing skills and the factsheet for supervisors for these guidelines.

Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience

When and where?When: From period 4 onward (February-July) 40 EC: à Research Proposal: 5 EC (Period 3)

Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience

Application form

• is NOT the contract!• The application form is necessary to make the

contract • Students submit application form online (soon)• Supervisors and student receive emails to check info• Supervisors and student receive contract

Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience

Internship contract

 Important!

Your internship should be legal Have you met all requirements? Your internship is insured No application form = no contract

= no valid internship = no EC

Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience

Assessment of master thesis

• You need 2 supervisors• 1 is always from FPN• 1st supervisor has PhD degree (or is

advanced phd student)

In external institute: à If supervisor there has PhD degree: à Then he/she is/can be the 1st supervisor.à You need a second assessor from FPN

Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience

External research internship / abroad• Interesting! Good for your academic development, • But also realize:

• Start searching in time, especially when going abroad

• You must also find a UM Faculty supervisor, who is willing and able to supervise your topic

• Find out whether you can receive (sufficient) supervision from someone with a PhD degree at external institute

Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience

Going abroad for internship?

Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience

The International Relations Office (IRO)Staff: Merlijne van Overbruggen, Ellen Blaauw,

Debbie Bloot

• The IRO offers scholarships and provides support on practical matters related to an internship abroad E.g. general advice on housing, insurance, language preparation, etc.

• The IRO doesn’t have formal agreements for internship purposes, nor a list of internship options. The IRO cannot mediate in finding an internship abroad. Always get in touch with your internshipcoordinator, to discuss how to proceed.

Visa matters• To find out if/which visa you need, consult the website of

your host country's embassy for the most up-to-date visa application procedure. For information on embassies, visa, vaccinations http://www.minbuza.nl/.

• It’s your responsibility to apply for a visa through the embassy. Visa regulations are subject to change and may differ per student (e.g. due to nationality, duration of stay).

• Check whether your host university (IRO/visa office) can provide assistance.

• Start to apply and to arrange the necessary documents in time! The rules are strict, especially for entering the US, Canada, the UK (especially for non-EU students)!

Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience

Insurance matters• Make sure to arrange adequate health/liability

insurance. Consult your insurance company to find out whether you are sufficiently covered.

• Your host institution is responsible for concluding a liability insurance. The UM provides a back-up liability insurance.

Housing mattersHow to find housing abroad?

 Check the website of your host institution;

 Contact your host university's IRO/housing office;

 Read the essays of former interns (or contact them by e-mail to ask for tips);

 Check http://www.wilweg.nl/stage/voorbereiding/huisvesting;

 Check www.housinganywhere.com

Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience

Important notes!• Enquire with your host institution whether they

charge tuition/service fees for visiting students (e.g. interns). Exemptions may be possible for EU students by registering for the so-called 'Erasmus + Traineeship scheme'.

• -->Please ask advice from IRO in case of unexpected/ unforeseen fees

• You have to remain registered and pay tuition fees to UM throughout your entire studies (incl. internship period). No valid registration = No validation (ECTS) of your internship!

Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience

The master’s study programme is offered on a full-time basis, this refers also to the internship.

For most specialisations: internship + master’s thesis = 35 credits

=> 24-25 weeks (Febr-July)

When you have to start later with your internship or when you cannot work fulltime on your internship/thesis, you will graduate later.

Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience

Requirements internship

- The internship can only be started when at least 8 credits of the core courses from period 1 and 2 are passed.

- Certain internships may require that practical or skill training(s) have been completed.

If you deviate from the above without permission from the Board of Examiners, the result of the part in question can be declared invalid.

Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience

Important

At least a month before you start your internshipyou have to fill out the internship applicationform. When you meet the requirements for theinternship a contract will be made up, which is signed by all parties.

If you don’t apply for the internship, it will beconsidered illegal, and can be declared invalid.

Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience

When can you start the internship?

At the earliest at the start of period 4(when at least 8 credits have been obtained)

In all other cases the internship starts at the first of the month after which 8 creditshave been obtained.

If you start the internship without having fulfilled the require-ments, it will be considered illegal, and declared invalid.

Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience

When you want to start your internship in February, make sure you pass at least 2-3 courses at the first attempt.

We are aware that arrangements about the internship mightneed to be made in advance. When discussing the starting date of your internship withsupervisor and/or institute keep in mind that the start of theinternship is dependent on having obtained 8 credits. Discuss this with your supervisor.

Although a contract might be made up before exam resultsare known, it will only be valid when 8 credits have been obtained. There will be a contingency in the contract.

Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience

Grading of parts of internship(s)

Assessment Criteria Master InternshipThe practical part of the master internship is assessed on several criteria. Assessors shall not mark all criteria (not all criteria might be applicable,) and might indicate those criteria that are noticeable (poor/unsatisfactory or good/very good), to provide the student with helpful information. – – = poor; –= unsatisfactory; +/– = borderline; + = sufficient, ++ = good; +++ = very good, NA = not applicable. Note that the outcome is not simply the sum of pluses and minuses.
