Prepared by Ms Cai Stage 2 English Unit Weekly Planner Term 2, 2020 This term in the English unit, you are going to explore the main text called Edward the Emu, written by Sheena Knowles and illustrated by Rod Clement. From Week 7, you will also look at a related text called Edwina the Emu. You will complete many fun, purposeful activities in this unit to gain deep understanding of the texts. In each lesson, there are boxes for you to tick off as you work through the learning sequences. This is a way to help you track your own learning at home. Complete Activity Sheet 1 in your writing workbook. Colour the picture once the story is pasted in the correct sequence. Story Map Revise the story on YouTube. While listening to the story, in your writing workbook, take notes about the story setting (where and when), characters (who) and sequence of events (what happen and why). Complete Activity Sheet 2 – Story Map. You might like to watch the story again if you need more information or check your answers. Optional/Extension Activity: Creative Storytelling!!! Pretend that you are Edward the Emu. You are now going to record yourself telling your story being bored in the zoo. Follow the story sequence but be creative in telling the events. The ideas may include storytelling with puppets/masks, role playing, visual illustrations (drawings, playdough), PowerPoint slide show. What would you like to do? 2 Rhyming Words Brainstorm these questions: What are rhyming words? Which part of the rhyming words are the same? Look at the Rhyming Words Poster to check your understanding of rhyming words. Revisit Edwards the Emu on YouTube. Stage 2 English Unit Weekly Planner Term 2, 2020

This term in the English unit, you are going to explore the main text called Edward the Emu, written by Sheena Knowles and illustrated

by Rod Clement. From Week 7, you will also look at a related text called Edwina the Emu. You will complete many fun, purposeful

activities in this unit to gain deep understanding of the texts.

In each lesson, there are boxes for you to tick off as you work through the learning sequences. This is a way to help you track your

own learning at home.

1 Story Sequencing

During viewing, pay attention to the sequence of events

– what happened first, then, after, and finally.

Complete Activity Sheet 1 in your writing workbook.

Colour the picture once the story is pasted in the correct

sequence.

Revise the story on YouTube. While listening to the

story, in your writing workbook, take notes about the

story setting (where and when), characters (who) and

sequence of events (what happen and why).

Complete Activity Sheet 2 – Story Map. You might like to

watch the story again if you need more information or

check your answers.

2 Rhyming Words

workbook, write down as many rhyming words as you

can from the story, e.g. zoo – do, door – bore.

Vocabulary Sort

Many interesting verbs (actions) and adjectives

(describing words) were used by the author to describe

the animals in the zoo. Listen to the story again on

YouTube and record them in your writing workbook.

Complete Activity Sheet 3 to sort the vocabulary used

for different animals in the story.

Optional/Extension Activity: Edward the Emu Word Search

Use Activity Sheet 4 to create your own Word Search using rhyming words or other interesting vocabulary from the text. The

3 Making Connections

6 Illustrations Help Tell a Story

Think about: What are illustrations? Why are

illustrations (pictures) important when telling a story?

Look closely at the illustrations while viewing the story.

Choose one of your favourite illustrations to complete

the left column on Activity Sheet 9. Explain how your

chosen illustration helps tell the story.

8 Comprehension

Reading is understanding. What have you understood

from the story? What are the key ideas told in the story?

Give yourself a test by completing Activity Sheet 11 to

check your understanding.

Edwina tried many jobs in her job seeking experience.

Think about: What jobs did she try? What was the best

job for Edwina?

Complete Activity Sheet 12 to show your answers.

Revise the story on YouTube id needed.

Optional/Extension Activity: My Dream Job

Have you ever thought of what your dream job is? Use your creativity and imagination to think about a job that you would

love to do now or when you grow up. The job could be something that is not even existing or nobody has ever thought of.

What is your dream job going to do to people, environment or … Think BIG, dream BIG!!! Complete Activity Sheet 13.

9 Comparing Texts

Now you have read two stories, Edward the Emu and

Edwina the Emu. You are going to compare these two

stories by completing Activity Sheet 14 – Venn Diagram.

Think about what things are the same/similar in both

texts and what differences there are in each text.

Emu Facts

Read the Emu Facts on Activity Sheet 15.

Complete the worksheet at the bottom of the page to

sort the facts about emus under different headings,

including Diet (What do emus eat?), Appearance (What

do they look like?), Habitat (Where do they live?),

Behaviours (What do they do?) and Other Interesting

Facts.

Optional/Extension Activity: Research Facts about Emus

If you are interested, you might like to do some more research about emus using the headings in Activity Sheet 15 as a guide

of what to search/look for. Record the facts in your writing workbook using your own words.

10 Emu Decoration

On Activity Sheet 16, use colour pencils, markers, crayons,

chalks, watercolour or paint to decorate your emu. Here are

some examples of completed artwork.

Emu Craft

Use Activity Sheet 17 to do this craft activity. Cut all parts of

an emu from the sheet. Paste or attach the parts together to

bring your emu to life.
