Stage 2 English Unit Weekly Planner Term 2, 2020
This term in the English unit, you are going to explore the main text called Edward the Emu, written by Sheena Knowles and illustrated
by Rod Clement. From Week 7, you will also look at a related text called Edwina the Emu. You will complete many fun, purposeful
activities in this unit to gain deep understanding of the texts.
In each lesson, there are boxes for you to tick off as you work through the learning sequences. This is a way to help you track your
own learning at home.
Week Lesson 1 Lesson 2
1 Story Sequencing
View the story, Edward the Emu, on YouTube:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0P74MJ3CMuU
During viewing, pay attention to the sequence of events
– what happened first, then, after, and finally.
Complete Activity Sheet 1 in your writing workbook.
Colour the picture once the story is pasted in the correct
sequence.
Story Map
Revise the story on YouTube. While listening to the
story, in your writing workbook, take notes about the
story setting (where and when), characters (who) and
sequence of events (what happen and why).
Complete Activity Sheet 2 – Story Map. You might like to
watch the story again if you need more information or
check your answers.
Optional/Extension Activity: Creative Storytelling!!!
Pretend that you are Edward the Emu. You are now going to record yourself telling your story being bored in the zoo. Follow
the story sequence but be creative in telling the events. The ideas may include storytelling with puppets/masks, role playing,
visual illustrations (drawings, playdough), PowerPoint slide show. What would you like to do?
2 Rhyming Words
Brainstorm these questions: What are rhyming words?
Which part of the rhyming words are the same?
Look at the Rhyming Words Poster to check your
understanding of rhyming words.
Revisit Edwards the Emu on YouTube. In your writing
workbook, write down as many rhyming words as you
can from the story, e.g. zoo – do, door – bore.
Vocabulary Sort
Many interesting verbs (actions) and adjectives
(describing words) were used by the author to describe
the animals in the zoo. Listen to the story again on
YouTube and record them in your writing workbook.
Complete Activity Sheet 3 to sort the vocabulary used
for different animals in the story.
Optional/Extension Activity: Edward the Emu Word Search
Use Activity Sheet 4 to create your own Word Search using rhyming words or other interesting vocabulary from the text. The
words can be lined up in rows, columns or diagonally. Fill in other boxes with random letters. Once completed, you might like
to ask one of your family members to do the word search. Have you hidden the words well?
3 Making Connections
Edward had a few adventurous days in the story. Think
about the following questions: Which Edward’s
experiences or feelings do you connect with? Do the
events remind you of something you did before?
Complete Activity Sheet 5 to explain connection(s)
which you could make to yourself.
Creative Writing
Put your “Imagination Cap” on and complete Activity
Sheet 6. If you could become any animal, what would
you like to be and why? You will need to give strong
reasons to support your idea.
Describe how your day would be like at the zoo if you
are that animal.
4 Character Profile
Think about: How would you describe Edward’s
personality? Personality shows what kind of a
character Edward is, e.g. “Edward is a keen learner as
he is good at learning from other animals”.
Complete the top two boxes in Activity Sheet 7 to start
making a character profile for Edward.
Character Profile
Think about: What did Edward say to show his
personality? How did he change his actions or feelings?
Why did he make the changes? Watch the YouTube clip
to help you recall.
Complete the bottom two boxes in Activity Sheet 7 to
finish off Edward’s character profile.
5 Character Behaviours
Think about: What behaviours did Edward copy from
other animals in the zoo? Why did he copy those
animals?
Complete the first column in Activity sheet 8.
Making Inferences
Make an inference to yourself: Have you ever copied
behaviours from other people? Why did you copy?
Think deeper: Is it ever useful to copy behaviours? Why?
Complete the second column in Activity sheet 8.
