English Reading & Writing – Story Re-tell Today you are going to read or listen to a story and then use your own words to re-tell it. By doing this you will be summarising the book to only include the most important parts. There is no need to include all the in-between details. In-between details are parts of the story that aren’t very important. These might be parts of the story like “then they got in the car” or “she had dinner”. Watch this video of Miss Marnoch modelling how to write a re-telling.

1. Watch Wombat Stew or choose your own book.

2. Think, what happened at the beginning, the middle and the end? Write this down as your plan.

3. In your own words explain what happened in the story. Remember to include the most important parts and leave out the in between details.

4. Read through your writing, edit your work and add extra detail where you can.

Your summary should be 5+ sentences long. Once completed hold onto your summary and plan as it could be helpful for tomorrows writing activity.

Mathematics Warm-up Pick the purple number OR green number. See if you can apply all six warm ups to your number. You can watch Miss Somerville explaining it on the NUMBER OF THE DAY VIDEO

Fractions For today’s lesson, you will need some A4 paper. Here is Miss Humphrey, have your paper ready so you can watch the video and do the lesson together. 1

What do you notice about the objects inside the circle? Can you explain your thinking?

2 To find half of a shape you need to split the shapes into 2 equal parts. In how many different ways can you halve an A4 sheet of paper? Use a different piece of paper each time. Have a good explore and see what different ways you can find. Don't be afraid to be creative! How will you know if they are halves?

You might start off with something like this, for example:

3 Using the same pieces of paper you used to make halves, can you now fold each of them into quarters? Are they still equal and the same size? How many different ways could you fold your piece of paper?

4

Year 2 Using the same pieces of paper you used to make quarters, can you now fold each of them into eighths? Are they still equal and the same size? How many different ways could you fold your piece of paper?

Optional: repeat using a square piece of paper. Are there more options?

Mindfulness task Think of a time when you felt calm and happy. See if you can notice those feelings somewhere in your body. Draw yourself in that moment/place.

Paralympics Every four years, some of the world’s best disabled athletes compete in 23 spectacular sporting events at the Paralympic Games! The history of the Paralympic Games stretches back to 1944, when a neurologist named Dr Ludwig Guttmann was asked to set up a spinal injuries’ centre. Dr Guttmann was a big believer in using sport to help rehabilitate injured people to build up their strength. Watch this video of Ozzie giving an overview of the Paralympics with some fun facts to educate you about the history and the importance of this amazingly inspiring sporting event. Choose a sporting superstar competing at the Paralympics and complete an ‘Athlete Profile’ (athlete’s name, competing sport, country of origin, personal best, number of medals awarded and interesting facts) OR choose a sport at the Paralympics and write how the sport has been adapted to cater for the athlete's disability OR write a couple of sentences on how the Paralympian you have chosen inspires you. Andrew Edmondson plays wheelchair rugby for the Australian Steelers. He is 31 and was born on 24 June, 1990. Andrew and his family (including brother Allan) grew up in Coogee, NSW. Although it was difficult for Andrew, who was only 13 at the time of his accident, to come to terms with being a quadriplegic, it did not take him long to realise his dream of representing Australia was still within reach. Wheelchair rugby is quite different from the rugby played at the Olympics – it includes elements of many other sports, including basketball and ice hockey, and is played in mixed teams of four! Andrew’s greatest sporting moment was winning a gold medal in Rio in 2016. His goal is to win another Paralympic medal. Andrew’s grandparents are his heroes.

Tuesday English – Rhyming Rhyming words are two or more words that have the same or similar ending sound. If they sound the same or similar, they rhyme. For example: car and bar rhyme; house and mouse rhyme. Rhyming helps us learn about word families, for example: let, met, pet, wet and get. Use objects inside and around your house to complete a scavenger hunt. Choose one of the boards below and look for items that rhyme with the items pictured on your board. For example: wall, hall or ball rhyme with ‘fall’. Once you find something that rhymes with the object, tick it off or colour the picture.

Optional – Lots of children’s books have rhyming words in them too. Often, we can guess or anticipate the rhyming word. Dr. Seuss is probably best known for his books which help children learn to read, through rhyme. Can you find a story at home that uses rhyming throughout, to engage the reader and to make it fun? Ms Cheney’s favourite rhyming book is ‘Giraffes Can’t Dance’. Listen to the story and make a list of the rhyming words as you listen. Writing - Comic Strip Watch this video of Miss Marnoch explaining the task. Today you are going to summarise a story by turning it into a comic strip. 1. You might like to use the same story from yesterday as you can use your re-telling to

help you summarise the story and transform it into a comic. 2. Watch the video of Wombat Stew from yesterday or read your own story. 3. Summarise the story. Think about the most important parts of the story and write them

down in dot points. 4. Organise how many comic boxes you will need. This will depend on how many dot

points you have. 5. Use a pencil and a ruler to draw the comic boxes. 6. Draw and write in your comic strip. Make sure to take time with your pictures and think

carefully about what the characters might say. The text in a comic strip should be short and simple.

Fractions- Drawing a picture to solve a problem Here is Miss Humphrey, reading a story and explaining our lesson today.

Example 2 animals share the damper. What fraction will they each get? Draw a diagram to solve the problem

Wombat got half ½

Echidna got half ½

Year 1 questions 1. 4 animals are now at the picnic. What fraction of the damper will they each get? 2. 4 animals are at the picnic. What fraction of the sandwiches will they each get? 3. There are now 8 animals at the picnic. What fraction of the damper will they each

get? 4. There are 8 animals altogether. How can they share the oranges to make sure

everyone gets a fair share? 5. The 8 animals share 2 sandwiches. How many pieces will each sandwich need to be

cut into? Year 2, first answer the Year 1 questions and then solve the following

6. If there were 6 animals at the picnic, how could they share the 4 oranges fairly? 7. If there were 4 animals and 6 sandwiches, how could they share the sandwiches fairly? 8. What fraction would each of the animals get if there were 8 oranges and if 8 more

animals joined the picnic? Optional extra: Fractions mosaic PDF or Echidna Fractions art PDF

Mindfulness Smiling Minds Use the app/website to pick and choose any age-appropriate session depending on your mood on the day. A good one for this topic is: Catching Butterflies

Mindfulness Activity When we see a butterfly, it is often a joyful experience. Butterflies dance and weave in the sunlight, making the most of every moment. Draw your own butterflies with pencils or textas and hang them up in your room to remind you to look for beautiful moments each and every day

Science Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture is among the most sustainable cultures in history. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples feel a real connection to their land and are knowledgeable about their land. Because of this, they are skilled at ensuring none of the natural resources will ever run out. One of the most important land management techniques that was used was cultural burning. Small, controlled fires were set and carefully managed by the people to encourage the regeneration of grasses and plants and promote the biodiversity of plants and animals in the area. Indigenous Peoples also made sure: •to only take what was needed •to rotate their hunting and fishing areas •to leave parts of the plains untouched for birds that nested on the ground •to establish breeding areas in lagoons for animals, such as the emu •to ban hunting during nesting season, and to never take all the eggs from a nest so that birds could fully grow. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people teach us to respect the country, look after it, share what’s there, pass on the knowledge and understanding of this country so it will be a better place to live.

• On a piece of paper or in your scrapbook, draw and label some pictures of traditional Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander sustainability practices.

• In this video about indigenous

sustainability, Miss P has helpfully given you LOTS of thinking time between slides. Maybe you could use this time to jot down a drawing?

English – Comprehension The Paralympic games are held every 4 years, this year the event is being held in Tokyo. The name Paralympics means alongside the Olympics. Paralympians are athletes who have a disability. Some of these disabilities include spinal injuries, loss of limbs, blindness and mental impairments. Because of these disabilities some athletes may use a wheelchair, have a prosthetic limb, or need a companion to assist them in their event. There are 22 sporting events at the Paralympics. These include wheelchair basketball, sitting volleyball, table tennis, swimming, archery, goal ball and wheelchair rugby. One impressive Australian Paralympian is Dylan Alcott, he has received several medals in more than one sport. He received a gold medal in 2008 when competing in wheelchair basketball. In 2012 he received a bronze medal in wheelchair basketball and in 2016 he won two gold medals in wheelchair tennis. He is also competing in this year’s tennis event. Goodluck Dylan!

Use the text to answer the questions below. Answer the questions in full sentences. You might like to use a highlighter to help you find the answers. Watch this video of Miss Marnoch explaining today's task. 1. Where are this year’s Paralympics held? 5. What are 3 sports played at the

Paralympics? 2. What does the term Paralympics mean? 6. Why do you think Paralympics are

special? 3. How often are the Paralympics held? 7. How many Olympic games has Dylan

Alcott competed in? 4. When will the next Paralympics be? 8. How many medals does Dylan Alcott

have?

Mindfulness Activity What is the best compliment you’ve ever received? Can you draw a picture showing how that made you feel?

PDH Growth vs Fixed Mindset

Today we are going to think about mindset. Your mindset is all about your attitude. It is about how you think and feel, rather than what you can or cannot do. As we get older, we find it hard to stay positive about trying new things. It can make us sad if we make mistakes. Scientists have found that all the most intelligent people have a growth mindset. They stay positive, they believe they can do it. Today I want you to think about all the encouraging things you could say to yourself when you’re learning something new. For example, instead of saying “I can't do it!,” you could try saying “This is tricky – that means I must be learning!” or “If I make a mistake I could try again.” Having a growth mindset can make everything seem easier! But having a fixed mindset can make even the easiest task seem impossible.

1. On some paper draw two sides of abrain like the one shown here. Or here isa copy you can print.

2. Make one colourful and vibrant or aGROWTH MINDSET and keep the othergrey and dull or a FIXED MINDSET. Ihave given you a list of statements thatmight be from a positive or growthmindset and some from a negative orfixed mindset.

3. Sort them into growth or fixed and writethem around the correct side of yourbrain picture.

• How can I make this better?• I will never be able to do this• I can’t make this better• Mistakes help me to learn• It’s good enough• I will use a different strategy• I’ll learn from my friend• I’ll never be that smart• I will learn how to do this

Here’s a video of Miss P talking about Growth Mindset

Thursday English- Writing In the Paralympics, sports have been modified to suit the athletes’ needs. Instructions for a game or sport need to be modified as well. You will create a procedure on how to play a Paralympic sport. You can choose any sport in the Paralympics. Think about sports that you have seen so far OR watch this explanation on Wheelchair Basketball Choose a sport in the Paralympics and create a set of instructions on how to play the game. It could be any sport in the Paralympics. You still use a ‘Title,’ ‘Aim,’ ‘Materials’ and ‘Method.’ Instructions for games and sports include how the game starts, how it is played and how the game is won. Watch Mr Adam’s example video to help.

Library- from Miss Compton- choose one activity to complete We are going to start with the idea that we must have courage to be kind and to believe in ourselves. What are some brave or courageous things that you have done for yourself? Have you ever been scared to do something or try something, but you persevered and did or tried it anyway? It takes a lot of practice and hard work to do courageous things for ourselves, to believe in ourselves and to push ourselves to be better or to learn something or to do the right thing! The world needs us to be our very best selves and to grow into those selves every day. Sometimes we need reminding though, so we are going to design a poster that you can hang in your room to remind yourself just how SUPER you are!

Activity options 1) Go for a book hunt, how many bookcharacters can you think of that havebeen brave? Pick one character andexplain what they did to overcome theirfears.2) Make a poster by finishing off thesestatements-I Believe in Super ME!

• I am Super because:• I want to get better at:• I believe I am/can:• This week I will show courage by:

3) Draw, design, and colour a picture ofyourself as Super Me! This should be you asa SUPERHERO, so draw whatever you feelthat looks like!

Mathematics Warm-up Pick the purple number OR green number. See if you can apply all six warm-ups to your number. You can watch Miss Somerville explaining it on the NUMBER OF THE DAY VIDEO

Length In week 2 we explored measuring the length of objects around the house using informal units like paper clips, Lego or blocks. Today you are going to be measuring the length of pieces of furniture in your home using another informal unit – hand spans. A hand span can be defined as the distance between the tip of the little finger and tip of the thumb when the hand is outstretched. Watch this Video of Mrs Oakes using her hand span to measure the length of furniture. Alternatively, you could trace your outstretched hand on a piece of paper and then cut it out to use as your measuring tool. Use your hand span to measure the length of 5 pieces of furniture. Remember to place your hands end-to-end without gaps or overlaps. Write out each measurement in a sentence. For example: ‘The desk is 5 hand spans long’. If your hand span does not fit exactly, you may need to write something like 5 and a bit or 5 ½. Now, Write all the furniture pieces in order from shortest to longest. Ext: Explain why if your parent/carer used their hand span to measure the length of the same pieces of furniture, they would get different answers.

Page 13: Stage 1 Term 3 Week 9- Learning Activities

Mindfulness Smiling Minds Use the app/website to pick and choose any age-appropriate session depending on your mood on the day.

Mindfulness Activity Imagine you are a colourful fish in the deep blue ocean. A hook means danger and it’s important to keep swimming if you see one nearby. Draw yourself swimming towards all that makes you happy and far away from the hook.

Art - Bugs (small insects) The aim of today’s art lesson is to appreciate nature. Go out into your garden or when you next go on a walk with your family and look for bugs! There are lots of exciting things you can find if you go on a bug safari! You can find everything from ladybirds, bees and beetles, such as the stag beetle. Although many people think of insects as pests that can be annoying, there are actually many insects that benefit the environment and humans. Insects like wasps, bees, butterflies and ants help to pollinate flowers when they are collecting nectar from them. Even the tiniest creature can help to make a difference in the world.

I like bugs and squiggly things Beetles with horns and moths with wings Caterpillars and bumblebees Dragonflies and ants and fleas I love creepy crawlies I love bugs!

You will need: a small collection of leaves and nature from your garden to recreate a bug. For example, different shaped leaves, twigs, grass, berries, flower heads, pods and/or seeds. Watch this video of Ms Cheney talking about today’s lesson.

Page 14: Stage 1 Term 3 Week 9- Learning Activities

Friday English - Writing The Paralympics is a worldwide event. This means that people who speak many different languages are going to be watching. Instructions need to be understood by people who speak different languages. Everyone understands pictures. Pictures are used in instructions so people of all languages can follow. Today we are going to create a procedure on how to cheer for our athletes during the Paralympic games. Cheering could involve special posters, banners, face-painting and cheerleading pompoms. This must be understood by everyone, so you are going to include pictures next to your ‘Materials’ and ‘Method.’

1. Create a procedure on how to cheer for your teamcorrectly. Include a ‘Title,’ ‘Aim’, ‘Materials’ and‘Method.’ Make sure you give yourself room forpictures with each instruction this time.

2. Draw pictures next to each ‘Material’ and eachinstruction showing the reader what you mean.

Watch Mr Adam’s example video to help.

Music - Choose an activity or two from Mr Stevens Activity 1: Rhythm Game Warm Up Using tabletop percussion, we are going to play a game of sevens. Can you keep up? The Sevens Body Percussion Game

Activity 2: Happy Birthday to... someone? Do you know someone who has a birthday soon? Try to keep up with this version of happy birthday by a clarinet quintet (a quintet is a group of five musicians). Warning! It gets faster and some lines of the song repeat. Can you get it right?

Activity 3: Instrument Fact File Listen to the clarinet here. If you do not have access to the internet, for ‘I hear’ write down how you imagine the instrument would sound. The four families of instruments: woodwind, brass, string, percussion

Instrument Name: Instrument Family: Draw a picture of it below.

I see: What do you notice about this instrument using your eyes?

I hear: What do you notice about this instrument using your ears?

I wonder: Write down any questions you have about the instrument.

Page 15: Stage 1 Term 3 Week 9- Learning Activities

Mathematics Warm-up Pick the purple number OR green number. See if you can apply all six warm-ups to your number. You can watch Miss Somerville explaining it on the NUMBER OF THE DAY VIDEO

Length Today your task is to make a tape measure that is marked by your choice of informal unit. For example: You could create a long strip of paper marked by identical repeated footprints. ‘0’ will be the very beginning of your strip of paper and ‘1’ will be marked at the end of the first unit, ‘2’ after the next and so on. Watch Mrs Oakes making her tape measure using a peg.

Use your tape measure to measure the length of at least 5 different items in your home. Remember to place the end of each item at 0. Record your measurements to show your teacher.

Example: The barbie is 2½ hands long.

Challenges

Vertical jump Get mum or dad to help you. Holding a piece of chalk, stand next to an outside brick or concrete

wall. Reach above your head and mark the highest point you can reach with the chalk. Then

jump as high as you can and mark it with the chalk. Measure the distance between the chalk

marks, that is your score. How high did you jump?

Standing long jump Another challenge where mum and dad can

help you. Find an object to use as a starting line such as a marker or a shoe. Stand stationary

behind the marker and see how far away from it you can jump. Measure the distance between the starting point and your furthest back heel

where you landed, that is your score. How far did you jump?
